    This might be a bit over the top to increase speed, but I purchased a number pad with arrows to put on the left side of my keyboard so I can keep my right hand on the mouse when dimensioning. I love it!

      I use a mouse with a whole numpad on its side (Logitech G600) but I still use my left hand on keyboard numpad. I just can't get used to it, and now I wonder if a discrete numpad would be better.

      I have often thought about that mouse, and wondered about using it for SW. An entire number pad on the side. So sick!!!

      wow thats a GREAT IDEA!!! I think I might try that sometime. The only problem (for me) is that I tend to "wiggle" the mouse, so when I am using the auto dimension in sketch mode I end up moving and having to re-type the dimension. But if I can just keep my mouse still......that might work out great!! Thanks for the tip Andrew!

    Great work @too tall toby . I love to see the different methods and techniques used to solve these. It is great to cross the finish line, but the journey is so much fun.

    Hey, this looked way closer to my approach, but I just sat and thought for 2 mins straight about my approach as if there wouldn't be a rollback bar altogether!
    I felt really strange the time crept up so fast, i wasn't expecting it to just start you know, yeah i forgot to deep breathe, mine first experience but felt really good after i submitted, only to realize i added an extra fillet as i selected the top face of the bottom feature so the 4 holes had fillet, really enjoyed it, would love to attempt every year onward! All thanks to you Toby!

    Great learning for beginners.
    The slit cut I would have done by sketching a single and extrude thin (set to midplane and correct width) feature by the way. Feels quicker but not sure if actually is in the end

      Thanks! yeah it's always interesting to hear about/see how different users create the same geometry! That was a fun model!

    Good call on sticking to your initial approach. I didn't and then got screwed over by my tendency to autodimension things. You beat me by 4 and a half minutes haha.

    Wow you have made the video exactly what I was looking for. I get confused or worry a lot thinking how to start the sketch looking at the drawing. Knowing what is going on in Experts head on how to start is very very helpful. It boosts up my confidence level that I am not alone while starting and figuring out how to start. I am learning that mostly start with the Top view. Create a base which has to be then machined further. Do you have any other insights on this.

    • @TooTallToby
      @TooTallToby  2 роки тому

      Wow thanks so much! Glad this is what you were looking for!
      Starting with the "footprint" of the model is usually a good strategy, so starting with the top view should work for many models. But it depends on how the model is being mounted, and what dimensions you think might change.
      Either way though - you are on the right track. Think about the entire model, and where the starting sketch and starting profile should be, BEFORE you begin modeling.

    Hello, excuse me, how did you do to put the extruder and symmetry operation in the floating menu, minute 4:35 there is when you select the floating menu opens and mates appear

      Hi Rodolfo! this video shows how I modified the CONTEXT toolbar: ua-cam.com/video/VC1W5-CJlUQ/v-deo.html
      And this video shows how I modified the S key toolbar: ua-cam.com/video/SYMTkpkDM44/v-deo.html

    I think I really do need to calm down with things like this. I always worry that I'll be seen as a failure if I don't get them all done fast enough. But that's also part of practicing. I guess I really just need to remember that these are lighthearted events more than anything. Nobody is judging, no businesses are sneaking in on it to see if you did good or not. It's more of a practice for the real thing.

      Hi Stag Dragon - Thanks so much for the comment! Yes I agree - the trick is really 2 things: 1 calm down and 2 stick to the basic best practices and routines. Its MUCH easier to say than to do, though, when you are under pressure :-) Glad you are enjoying the content!

    In the mates, since you put the extrude cut and symmetry operation, could you tell me

    What about including all 4 hole circles in the original sketch, and creating them as the second extrusion?

    • @TooTallToby
      @TooTallToby  3 роки тому +1

      This definitely would work - creating a "master layout" sketch and then using this downstream (either by using a "shared sketch" or by doing convert entities" is a solid strategy, for sure. Glad you enjoyed the video!
