It’s heartbreaking to think that this match took place as Monica’s father was terminally ill with cancer 😢 he passed away 6 weeks later. At that point (and throughout 1997) she wanted to step away from tennis to be with him and he was the one who pushed her to keep playing.
A father always knows best. He knew her daughter. He knew the more she was away from the court the harder his death would have been for her. He knew the best way for her to accept his imminent passing and start the grieving process was for her to play tennis. After the stabbing, he knew the longer she was away from the game the harder it would have been for her, both on and off court. Especially off court. He knew. That’s why he pushed up so much to play while he was dying.
