Check out PART 2 here: • 10 Movie Moments Where...
Movies are the most common pastime and form of entertainment. They take an incredible amount of time to make. From story developing, to casting talent and crew, to filming, and creating magic, and post production. It is all a work of art. But making audiences believe the world, especially the characters are real is a where the magic really happens. Especially with the actors. There have been some incredible performances throughout history. But what if we told you some of these performances were really being experienced and the actors weren’t acting? Today we will be discussing real moments where actors weren’t acting.
Such as Drew Barrymore in E.T. She was told that E.T. was actually real. The first time she sees E.T. and freaks out is a very real moment as she had never seen the puppet before. Also, when she cries when E.T. dies is a real moment as she thought the alien was real.
In Fight Club, Ed Norton’s character was told to hit Brad Pitt on the shoulder during their first fight. But was told last minute to hit him in the ear, unbeknownst to Brad. Which made his reaction very amusing and very real.
One of the funniest scenes that really happened was the waxing scene in the 40 year old virgin. Steve Carrel’s screams and phrases are all genuine reactions to being waxed in real life.

Best mindfuck movie ever!
It's not true. You can watch the making of. The only reason people ignored her is because none if them could stand her. And she had to do multiple scenes due to her poor acting.
Shelly Duval had serious mental issues for years because of The Shining. Should have sued that director for mental anguish , all her medical and living expenses as well. Poor woman could barely function.
(She should've sued them!)
I won't ever watch that movie again, now i know this. The other actors are complicit due to their silence.
It is interesting how far people are allowed to go in the name of art.
Cray Cray *that moment when the contract most likely doesn't warm you of the consequences, especially consequences that could affect you for life*
Cray Cray Actually I'm sure the contract didn't include or mention consent to strategical mental abuse from the cast and crew.
Fun fact: in Harry Potter and the deathly hallows when Voldemort hugs draco malfoy, draco Tom Felton (the actor who played draco), wasn’t acting with his look of his surprise. Voldemort didn’t have a script and was merely making things up as he went along. In the scene in the movie he hugged draco because he thought it would look nice in the movie.
I like that to you it's "Tom Felton (the actor who played Draco)" and "Voldemort". :)

I love loved this post! So many memories, thank you!
the Shelly Duval thing actually kinda pissed me off. Like great acting and everything, but at what cost. Poor woman. She deserved better than that.
Mr Nothing Exactly. And she's batshit nowadays (no offense) and I bet it's at least partially due to how scarred she was from the film.
millions of dollars
He didn’t have to do it to Nicholson, and the film is absolute gold. I firmly disagree. He did what he had to do...
I don't care dude, there are another ways to get a realistic reaction, and that's a really fucked up way.
She has(had) free will. She could have left at any time. Get over it lmao

In The Goonies they kept One Eyed Willie’s Pirate Ship a secret so they would get authentic reactions upon seeing it.
but they had to reshoot because they were cursing a lot
I've got to say, just seeing a short clip from Terminator 2 reminds me just how much of a better movie it is compared to all of the other sequels and rip offs.
Really? I loved all of the movies
I feel so bad for the women in the film “the shining” she must have so much will power to have still carried on playing that role because if I was her I would probably have quit so props to her🙏🏽👏🏽👏🏽
She's mentally ill now. Reason unknown.
Her name is Shelley Duvall
Gracie Young she probably wasn’t allowed to leave
quitting in hollywood isnt as easy as quitting a normal job. theres lots of legal contracts that could ruin your career and bankrupt you if you just leave.

They use a real lion in Narnia and it would regularly eat stuntmen during filming
Of course, they have to keep it fed, and stuntmen are disposable.
Bruce Leroy actually started glowing yellow in response to Shonuff asking “who’s the master?”
why are directors praised for abusing their actors? They hired these people to act they shouldn't have to trick them into getting the reaction they want. You'r not "getting a genuine reaction" by punching an actor in the face when they're not expecting it. You are abusing them.

Has anyone mentioned the chest burster scene in ALIEN? Supposedly none of the actors knew what they were going to see in that scene (though they did wonder why the cameras were wrapped in protective plastic sheets).

No wonder child actors get so screwed up, they play with their minds.
Lynne Wright - Glzrbug i hate when directors lie to and abuse actors. Any director that does that should be fired
As opposed to what... Most childhoods? I'd rather be dripping with money than going through what most kids endure for free..
Inquisitive Cameron Wow what a thin shell of a personality

In Ridley Scott’s “Alien”, the cast were not told about the “chestburster” scene so, when the baby alien broke through actor John Hurt’s chest, the looks of horror on his fellow cast members’ faces were genuine.
Rage1732 that’s a funny prank
Rage1732 John Hurt and the alien both reprise their roles in Mel Brooks' Spaceballs
Actually, they WERE told about the scene, but they weren't told how much blood would be splattered, so Lambert's scream when so much of the blood hit her was genuine.
Clay Yocom He talks like a bundle of sticks?...

You forgot the scene in THE HATEFUL EIGHT when Kurt Russel smashes an authentic 140 year-old guitar. Jennifer Jason-Leigh's shocked reaction is genuine because she knew it was the original antique while Kurt Russel thought it was a prop.
And the museum now doesn't lend historical artifacts for film production. Leonardo Dicaprio's hand slice scene in Django Unchained is same story.

But the most important thing is that poor mental health is definitely NOT FUNNY.
If true what Stanley Kubrick did is not only sickeningly immoral but also criminals.
He should have lost the ability to work in the US, been incarcerated, and also had his behind whipped.
Drew Barrymore hasn't changed one bit. She'll always be that adorable little girl from E.T.
Ashley Langford I'm pretty sure she has changed. She's about 35 years older

In "Pulp Fiction" the actor playing Marvin was such a pain in the ass that Tarantino arranged for live ammunition in Travolta's gun, hoping that he would accidently pull the trigger and shoot the dude. That also had the secondary benefit of an unrehearsed response from Travolta and Jackson.
Totally do not believe you.

Pesci actually bit the kid's fingers and broke the skin?? Jesus.
Its kinda fucked up how they get child actors to best express the scripted emotions of the character they're portraying. I always was curious how they get babies/toddlers to cry. I almost don't want to know the answer to that question after hearing what Drew went thru during the filming of E.T. 💛
wait Evie...CHILD ACTORS ARE FINE. BABIES DON'T DO ANYTHING and that's fine...toddlers too..their kind to them on film sets and I should know, I am an actor and around kid/baby actors all the time......and Drew was a drunk by lack of parents......supervising..........TODAYS FILM SETS ARE DIFFERENT IN THAT RESPECT
Evie Hammond that’s terrible what they did u agree it’s terrible!
Agreed, i'm pretty sure what they did can be classified as psychological abuse. It's not fair to do that to a toddler / child.
ya guys, todays film sets are different. Now instead of mentally torturing them they just touch inappropriately and pray that they forget what happened before they're old enough to tell the news about it.
I agree, it is totally fucked up and disturbing and if this trend continues I may have to start looking for other entertainment than movies, I have no desire to pay for real child abuse.

that also wasn't acting??
The story about Shelley Duvall really changed how I thought about the Shining. Now that I've read the book, it's the only way to fly imo. Yes, the movie is still iconic, but Kubrick took it waaaay to far with her. Duvall often lost hair and sleep over her days on set. Meanwhile Kubrick tried to be as nice as possible to the child actor who played Danny. So, the man CAN be nice, but he made it a point to actually horrify his main actress.
Alfred Hitchcock's "The Birds" ruined that actress, Tippi Hedren, as well. Not just emotionally AND physically, but it really ruined her life. She was an up and coming Hollywood babe who had a lot of opportunities. When work began on "The Birds", she signed an exclusive contract. Then, in an attempt to get her to REALLY look scared on most of the scenes, Alfred genuinely tortured her at times. Apparently, old AH was known for being a first class ass hat to nearly everyone he worked with, ESPECIALLY women. There's a scene where she's being hit in the face by birds until she is bleeding from the scratches... guess who's throwing them at her? Guess who's demanding more and more takes of that sequence? Never looked at Hitchcock movies the same way again.
He abused her daughter to
He kept making sexual advances towards her and when she turned him down he threw everything at her birds included. He had her blacklisted, but she happy just to get away from him.
Also Shelly Duvall ended up suffering from mental illness later in life.
Preminger used the same tactic on Tom Tryon in The Cardinal. He constantly abused him verbally and even sacked him when his parents came to visit the set, later re-hiring him when he thought he was sufficiently humiliated. Yes, he got a good performance, but apparently Tryon could never bring himself to view the finished film. Blokes can be on the receiving end too. No excuse.
and then Spielberg lying to a child to get her to cry? Wow...

In the Shirley Temple movie, "Now and Forever," Temple was told on-set that her friend had just been killed in a car crash and her uncontrollable sobbing was filmed so that the crying would look authentic.

Also in Jurassic Park when the glass on the car broke, it stayed a panel and the kids held it up with their hands and feet, the glass wasnt supposed to fall and the screams were real...
I knew that too.
The glass was meant to fall but not break as I understand it.
If that is true about the female actor in the shinning that is practicaly torture and he should be punished for it. There is no way that could happen today.

You didn't mention the chestburster scene from Alien? No one told Veronica Cartwright just how much blood and ick was going to be spraying about, so when she got hit in the face by it, her reaction was totally genuine.
Fluffykeith yup. Amazing reaction of shock, disgust and horror when that blood hits her.
I just made the same comment... we're wise!
Is it really a Great “Performance” if a little kid is reacting to what they think is a real, live, kind, alien creature that they’ve grown to love dying before their eyes?...maybe a little messed up. Why not just run over her puppy in front of her that she got for Christmas to get the “Great Performance”?!...Then again, i guess i’m pretty biased because i STILL remember how I cried and threw a tantrum after watching ET for the first/last time around age 4 or 5.

Yes and speaking of Alien they didn't mention the chestburster scene. They didn't tell the other actors what was going to happen there before.

Not true at all. They saw mock up before hand
Ripley wasn't really a badass in the '79 original, just lucky to be the last one alive. She was, however, a badass in the '86 Aliens.

Carly Taylor-James That's true :D. I love that kind of movie making. It feels real because it is real.
Carly Taylor-James exactly. Sigourney and others have talked about it many times. They had a vague idea that the creature was gonna appear but no clue exactly how. I’m guessing John Hurt was kept away from the rest of them?

Very nice….
Can't believe they didn't put the Rambo 2 torture scene in here, Stallone literally told them to use real electric for "authenticity" and it certainly paid off in the film.
NoNameJustWords are you kidding??
The scene in the dark knight where heath ledger's joker remote detonated the hospital... the stalled explosion was actually not supposed to happen.. lol
The Silencer yeah he took the remote and did it on his own, he wanted to surprise the other actors.. sadly he passed on before receiving his reward.
LOL 🤣 But it was funny.
Michael Caine had lines in the scene where he meets Heath Ledger's Joker, but he forgot as he was immersed in Ledger's performance.
No way thats my favourite movie
Some things simply aren't as important as somebody else's well being, and Kubrick crossed WAY over the line with Duvall, I think she ended up traumatized and I wonder how much that has played part in her mental illness today? Very, very sad...
Here's a few other not-acted moments:
- Kurt Russel's shocked reaction when he blows up the thing incarnation after the blood test in The Thing is genuine, he wasn't expecting the explosion to be anywhere near as big as it ended up being.
- I forget which James Bond movie it was (Dr. No?), but there was a scene where a tarantula is crawling over Bond while he's on a bed, played by Sean Connery. Well Connery is extremely phobic of spiders, and while it was on a sheet of glass held over him his horrified stare is 100% genuine.
Why, she has mental illness now??
There is a real moment like this in a James Bond movie with Sean Connery; it's not "Dr. No" but "Thunderball." A shark was supposed to swim in a lane where Connery was blocked off by a transparent plate of glass (something similar was done with the tarantula in "Dr. No" without issue). The shark instead wedged into the lane Connery was submerged in. The shark swam by without incident, but Connery was shocked and director Terrance Young left in his wide-eyed reaction.
The laser cutter scene in Goldfinger was filmed with a guy behind the plate cutting the plate with a blowtorch and getting really close to burning off his nuts for real. The fear on Bond's face in that scene is very much genuine.
Oh nice i didnt know about that James Bond scene

Wow, I have Crohn's. Never knew that puffy eyes were a symptom!
Wondering what that ad was, and what have you been seeing to trigger it... 😅
No it says “from literally crying so hard”
Ava black no the ad cut in to make it say that, we know it doesn’t actually says that
Shes still around in my small hometown in Texas and i worked at a Chinese restaurant and one day she came in to order food and her vibe and just all around physical being was very disturbed she was kinda rude too but i guess you cant blame her.
Cat, dog, and a magnifying glass could represent Garfield searching for--what was his name, Odie? It's been a while since I've watched that movie.

I thought Ace Ventura: Pet Detective
I hope Shelly Duvall got paid really well she seems like she would be a sweet woman in real life
She has completely lost her mind, sadly.
@@ProjectFlashlight612 oh no!! Really??
@@Andidrew4ty2 Yes. It's awful. You don't seem to empathize.
@@ProjectFlashlight612 in fact I deeply empathize and read a beautiful article written by a big fan who tracked her down in January. Actually made me tear up. She was a fantastic actress and it’s sad to see anyone you respect struggling with mental illness.
Ellen Burstyn in The Exorcist, when she is slapped in the face by Regan and thrown to the ground. Her screaming was real because she was pulled from her back so hard so she could fall to the floor
I heard of it too
It could be found In the Trivia category in The Exorcist page
You definitely forgot my favourite one. The scene in dance magic (labyrinth) where the goblin king is seen sticking his finger up his nose and turning away from the camera.
Marika Weber Really??? Why? - and where did you learn that?
Marika Weber sorry, I didn't word that question very well. What I meant was, "If it wasn't scripted, why did he do it?"
He didn't. It's a contemplative pose. As if he is thinking about "What kind of magic spell to use"
Yeah he got pretty close to his nose. He didn't stick his finger up it.
plot twist- the shining is how the joker went crazy
That would be a great twist. 😉
Lily-Rose Guerin while u playing
Lily-Rose Guerin Have you even watched the Shining?
Just wondering...
and people wonder why child actors end up with addictions and other mental health issues...
That would be from no structure nor boundaries. Look at many of today's problem children.
