A Hearthstone Player's First Impressions of Legends of Runeterra

Rarran, RegisKillbin, Zeddy, trump, thijs, kripp and other hearthstone youtubers all play different hs gamemodes. Duels, Battlegrounds, Standard, Arena and Wild are in the game that can new cards from new expansions to climb and win HS games.
Hearthstone is a card game based on WOW, it is also a digital card game.
Today we dive into Legends of Runeterra, a game from Riot available on pc and mobile.

I never realized how detailed and genuinely beautiful some hearthstone card art is. They look like genuine paintings
I'm sure a good amount of them were actually done as just regular art, not card art. Could also just be how the TCG did card art. Different philosophy. How big were the TCG cards? Most of the card was card art with little text at the bottom. Hearthstone has big card text and smaller art, leading to how current Hearthstone art is made: more exaggerated features to stand out better when on a mobile screen.
Some of the art could very well be from like 2001-2003, before WoW was out. They did a lot of desktop wallpaper stuff.
Yep the classic art, a lot of which was re-used from the WoW TCG, rivals a lot of magic art honestly. Modern hearthstone art is cool sometimes but mostly just goofy and cartoony in the worst way possible.
A lot of card art looks amazing what we see in the card is only a part of it. Its really fun to go and find the rest of it. I wish blizzard put that up either on the site or even better on the pc client

I always loved how Angry Chicken doesn't even look angry, more confused than anything.
However, the Chicken tokens generated from that one gnome that draws you a card and if its a minion turn it into a chicken is straight up 1000% angry.

The full art looks pretty good. Blizzard missed a trick by not being able to click on the card in collection manager to go to full art
The mana wyrm art is so weird because it's straight from the burning crusade trailer so the blood elf was a 3d model

You go second, your opponent play nothing, you play Dust Devil coin Dust Devil, second turn somehow your opponent can't answer, you hit face for 12, turn 3 your opponent still can't answer and you play Flametongue Totem hit face for 20 and win...
This is so much harder with the full card art out of context of the card. I had no idea most of these pictures actually looked like this... For instance, I always thought Sap was a face with tree roots growing out of it, not a stunned Elf or whatever. Crazy.

Drain Soul is the card that deals 3 to a minion and has Lifesteal.
I've never seen any of these close up, they're like entire well composed, emotion invoking artworks, holy heck
Also adore how some of these have a 70s/80s fantasy art vibe too
@@ahand091 Most of them seem hand-drawn, which is amazing. The art overall feels like it fits into a choose your own adventure fantasy book from the 80's.
Almost all of the classic Hearthstone art was taken from the Wowtcg and Wow key-art, which was done in this really detailed style. The way they did a lot of the cards was really detailed, and in such a lovely style.
It was just of what added to the charm at first for me, getting to see all these cards I'd played with as a kid in Hearthstone :)

A lot of classic arts were taken from WOW:TCG and other Blizzard's warehouses, some of those arts are dated 2002 that's how old are they.

I kinda didn't realize how different each card art is. The styles vary a lot more than I expected!

Fun fact: stampeding kodo art does not depict a kodo, but a clefthoof from Draenor (its an alien kodo, regular kodos from azeroth are not that hairy). They didn't have a kodo high quality artwork at the time apparently.

You should try the Hearthstone A-Z challenge: for each letter of the alphabet, name a card in Standard right now from memory. There's at least 1 card for every letter in the current Year of the Hydra
I just noticed how all over the place early HS art is. From 18th century oil painting looking drawings to Scarlet Crusader who looks straight out of an anime.

hey rarran! video idea: maybe you could make a video judging the strength of decks in ygo, because it's easy to show the full capacity of a deck (or even just 1 card combos) in 1 turn. would also maybe help you understand the game if you are planning on playing ygo it in the future!

@@Rarran Yeah, having played a bunch of different TCGs before and playing it for the first time this year with Master Duel it's certainly the most unique one.
Lack of any mana-like resource forced some really interesting design, but also a lot of very toxic mechanics. Power creep is also insane where a cards like Raigeki don't see much play in meta decks.
@@Rarran I don't think that video would be very interesting if you didn't know how to play the game like what happened with Magic. I think if there was someone there with you and you watched one of their games at the end of the video it would be better plus then you could make a follow up.

Looking at all the classic card art, it just looks like Warcraft. Newer Hearthstone cards just look like WoW. Bizarre to think how much has changed in only like a couple years.

I would have loved some editing for rights/wrongs for fun :P it went way better than your estimate though but it sure is fun seeing the pain in not knowing the playables

i love goin back and looking at the full art for the old cards. pretty lame that the gritty, more detailed art style has fallen to the wayside of late. there seem to be far more smooth textured cartoony cards in recent years.
