    Great video mate. I'm onto my second pond now. Have had crystal clear water from the get go with my first. But I do filter my water 7 times over every hour, however a good 2/3rds coverage of floating plants such as azolla, as well as bullrush, snowflake and other aquatic plants also help keep it clean.
    Plus I introduced a few hundred glass shrimp and they also help, as well as the snails.
    But yes, a good filtering system is paramount to crystal clear water.
    It's by far my favourite hobby and most fulfilling when you can enjoy it with other people.

    You have such a nice and relaxing pond setup here. Most garden ponds are filled with gigantic gaudy koi fish that are too cramped, and so its nice to see an example of something more manageable done right. Goldfish are much more beautiful when not overshadowed by koi.

    My pond turned green shortly after its spring cleaning. Couldn't see the fish or the rocks at the bottom. I added a couple of diy floating baskets with plants I had growing in the yard. After about 3 weeks the water cleared enough to see the fish and rocks! My best summers have been when I added plants to the pond. Will be considering your bio filters in my next pond build.. thanks for you videos. I will be taking notes.

Thanks for the grate info

    • @Ozponds
      @Ozponds  3 роки тому +1

      Sounds awesome! The creek can be water depth you like. If it’s really shallow and wide you’ll need lots of water flow to see the water above the pebbles ( in that situation around 8000 litres for every 30cm of width). If you go deeper doesn’t really matter. Hope that helps 👍

    Absolutely beautiful, but I wonder how often, and how many fish you replace, from predation? Personally, although I would LOVE it, I would never keep a pond that clear, cause they would quickly be snatched up by everything from raccoons, to herons(which could indeed reach the deep part of that pond). I’m wondering if your lack of any baby fish, or fish of different sizes, is a sign of the significant turn-over. I have a small pond, maybe only 6ftx4ftx(2&4ft)deep, and even tho I have some fish disappear now and then, every year I have numerous new little brown colored baby goldfish. Even with the pond water being so green much of the time, any fish more than around 4”-5” down, only appear as moving areas of color, the herons STILL get some. If I had crystal clear water, I’d be completely restocking every year:(

    • @Ozponds

    G'day mate, that's a very nice pond you have there and I dug a big pond at the front of my bush block house. We have that reddish clay here and I was wondering if I need a pool liner or can I just go ahead and use plenty of gravel at the bottom. I've seen many ponds with liners and they just break down and weeds come growing through and ruin the liner. Liners aren't cheap. We have lots of rocks at our place and I can collect the big ones with my tractor. My pond is quite big at around 80 mtrs2 in a triangular shape. Hope you can help me out. Ta

    • @Ozponds
      @Ozponds  2 роки тому

      Will it hold water? I’d check that first. If you are going to use rock and pebble on a clay lined pond I would use a geotextile fabric to stop the rocks and pebble sinking into the clay.

    • @redgum1340
      @redgum1340 2 роки тому

      @@Ozponds G'day, thanks for replying. Yep, this clay holds water. The whole ground is that reddish/orange solid clay. You can dig as far as you like and it' all the same stuff. I make ponds and natural bodies of water for my clients and this is a very good informative video for novice viewers.
    Everything mentioned here is accurate and to the point, it doesn't matter about the number of fish you have as long as you match the number of fish to the volume of water, subrate area and the quantity of plants you install within the pond. Many people think ponds require all these gadgets and systems to ensure their water quality is maintained. This could not be further from the truth, the less natural your pond is the more you need artificial systems to maintain pond water quality.

      My channel is more for people on a budget. But in saying that everything is scalable. The dream pond I’m building at the moment uses exactly the same principles. You are right though if people choose to overflow the system with bio load it will become overwhelmed. So they have a choice either more filtration or less fish.

      G’day Ran. I’m not fussy when it comes to rock. Sometimes it’s desirable to maintain a higher pH so people want to use rocks that have a higher carbonate or bicarbonate within them. The usual way to test this is pour some vinegar on the rock, if it fizzes the rock contains the above. I’ve never kept turtles so I’m not really sure if the like a high or low pH. In regards to the plants yes they will consume some of the nitrogen. Hope that helps 👍

      Very nice. Because I’m all about being hands off (low maintenance) I never stock my ponds with lots of fish. I love the fish but for me the plants, sounds and other animals are just as important. Also I’m not allowed to keep koi in my state. So all my fish are pretty small with low bio load. Therefore if I have a well sized bog filter I never seem to have an issues. The pond down the back that started this conversation has no bog filter. There is no electricity down there. About 12 months ago I added the airline and am trying the David pagan butler style of filter (that is used in swim ponds). This pond will never be a swim pond as it receives lots of runoff from my plant nursery. So very heavy nutrient load. Im trying to filter the water as best I can before it leaves the pond. The filter has certainly made a difference and once I get more plant growth I’m hoping it just keeps getting better and better. It’s a fun hobby there is always more to learn at the moment I’m fascinated by anoxic filters and zones and how they can instantly process ammonia. Keep up the good work 👍

      I personally think patio ponds are too small for goldfish. I’d go 1000L minimum and even then I’d only have 6-8 fish. And that’s young gold fish as they get bigger they’d need more space. In my outdoor ponds I don’t feed the fish. The patio ponds on the verandah I do, and they only have small fish (white clouds & rice fish).

    The explanation of the nitrogen cycle in ponds in this video is wrong. Ammonia (toxic) is excreted by fish, but the nitrogen in ammonia is inaccessible to either plants (or algae). Nitrifying bacteria convert ammonia to nitrite (also toxic and unusable by plants or algae). Fortunately, other species of nitrifying bacteria convert nitrite to nitrate. Nitrate is nontoxic, but it is also the major source of nitrogen for plant and algae growth. It is, in fact, fertilizer. Algae grows when the pond plants cannot keep up with the nitrate load, either because there are too many fish producing to much ammonia, or because there aren't enough pond plants to consume all the nitrate. In order to prevent algae, you need to either reduce the fish, increase the plants, or do frequent water changes. The nitrifying bacteria are essential, don't get me wrong. But the abundance of nitrifying bacteria is not lone going to keep the pond free of algae; it's the pond plants (or bog filter plants) that are keeping the nitrate levels low. Whatever, is good fro plant growth (nitrates and sunlight) is also good fro algae growth. You need to outcompete the algae with an abundance of plants,or you're going to have algae even in the presence of abundant nitrifying bacteria.

    • @Ozponds
      @Ozponds  3 роки тому

      I’m not sure where we disagree on the nitrogen cycle. I talk about ammonia to nitrite to nitrate. My background is horticulture (I own a wholesale nursery) plants can most definitely use ammonia for growth especially single celled algae, not that I cultivate that for sale 😉. But you are right that nitrate is also a good food source for plants. I’m not sure that I’ve ever disputed that. You state that nitrate isn’t dangerous for fish but it is in higher levels that’s why people conduct water changes on aquariums, ponds, etc. I mean my aquariums can read nitrate levels and still not have any visible algae. I attribute this to the bacteria’s doing their thing. Bacteria and algae are much more adaptable to influxes of nutrients and therefore more able to quickly take up those nutrients than more complex plant systems. Anyways that’s just what I’ve found in my learning and my experience. If you want to leave a link to your own UA-cam channel or research papers feel free. 👍

    • @timothyjorgensen7898
      @timothyjorgensen7898 3 роки тому

      @@Ozponds I think the primary reason your outdoor ponds are so clear is that you don’t feed you outdoor fish. Fish food is the primary source of most of the nitrogen entering ponds. In the absence of fish food there will be very low levels of nitrate in the water. And what little nitrate there is the pond plants will gobble up. I think you may be correct that no feeding is needed for outdoor pond fish (as long as there aren’t too many fish). I also notice that you use gravel rather than soil for planting your pond plant (except water lilies). This will also keep nitrate levels quite low. With such low nitrogen input, the nitrifying bacteria in the filters can easily keep up. I would imagine your ammonia and nitrite levels are undetectable. I didn’t mean to give you a hard time. It’s just that it’s wrong for people to think that they can overfeed fish and under plant. And still have an algae free pond. Notifying bacteria or not, if you nitrogen input is too high, you will get algae. You have a good channel. I like your videos. It’s just that I thought novices would misinterpret what you were saying about notifying bacteria. Nitrifying bacteria are not a panacea for dealing with algae problems.

    • @Ozponds
      @Ozponds  3 роки тому +2

      From first hand experience the feeding or lack thereof didn’t seem to make any difference. The pond was green for 12 months before I added the bog, I didn’t feed the fish then either. Within 6 weeks of adding the bog clear water. Granted I did plant the bog immediately. So not a perfect test for bacteria vs plants. But in my aquarium no plants just bacteria keeping the water clean and clear (yes I have lights, just in case you thought the lack of light was preventing algae). But I would always advocate people use plants as it helps the cycle complete, is natural and looks great. I’m glad you enjoy the channel all I want to do is help people and I’m still learning all the time so over time things may change as does my understanding and knowledge. By no means do i claim to know everything and I’m more than happy for different opinions and experience to be expressed in the community. Sun can contribute to it yes, but if you stock different types of plants, floaters like azolla or salvina, bottom growers like water snowflake lillies and bog plants like papyrus, you'll have a very clear pond. A good filter with healthy bacteria that is turning the water over sufficiently will also make an immense difference.
      Remember, it's a balance of both. Mimick nature, don't think that man made solutions are more effective. The planet has been evolving for billions of years. Nature knows what to do, you just need to give it the right conditions to get started, then it's low maintenance.
      Do that right and you will never need a water change, unless you're really overstocking.
