Jack.. I'm just so impressed with how you've taken ahold of this and really handled yourself like a true businessman, and not let all the other stuff get in the way, of running a legitimate operation, and knowing what to look for and what pitfalls not to fall into! I'm glad I'll be able to watch you become the successful man, you're clearly destined to be! Keep up the good work, kiddo! 🥰
I enjoyed this video since I do breed fish for profit. I have a unique situation where I supply all local shops with 40+ varieties available all the time. I send a weekly availability/price list by email, so I don't even need a website. I sell my fish at 1/4 to 1/3 the price of retail and have focused on a lot of fish that tend not to ship well. I also deliver at no cost since the shops are all local. The shops know they will always receive quality fish so they prefer to buy from me. Breeding 40+ types of fish requires that I have 350-400 tubs of fish going at all times. It also requires hatching out nearly a pound of brine shrimp eggs weekly which is the biggest food cost. I currently check egg scatterers for eggs every 3 days which means when I harvest, I have everything from new eggs to newly hatched in the bin. The other 2 days of the 3-day cycle are dedicated to water changes. The longest vacation I get to take is 'leave one day, return the next', that way fry get fed once the day I leave and once when I return which is not ideal given fry need to be fed a minimum of twice a day and preferably more. The reality is that it is impossible to breed just a couple types of fish and make a living. You need a large operation, and it is truly a full-time job. You have to have a passion for it and be dedicated to it or you will fail.
Yeah I totally get that! And that’s the point I’m trying to make. Like you are not going to get rich just breeding some fish for fun! Only if you go and do it retail like become a shop etc.
Go temperate. That's what I did a few years ago. There's a big choice of Asian cyprinids that are fine at 20C in the winter and are fine upto 28C in the summer (maybe even more for short spells). I have a brilliant Indian hill stream set up now. One of my favourite ever tanks.
@bigmoncrief6071 good point! There are many fish that can still be kept at room temperature and definitely in Australia where Craig is, as it gets warm there lol
I have always felt good if I could trade excess fish for fish food or water chemistry needs. To me, that's good. My local fish shop feeds my addiction and I give them goods to sell. Not a lot, but some. It's a good symbiosis, but I don't expect to get rich in any way, even if I'm giving him something that is rare and interesting. To make money breading fish, you have to do it on a massive scale that it takes all the fun out of it. You have to have large buildings filled with tubs which produce thousands of fry, which you eventually sell at wholesale prices, and which undercuts the price of people going out and catching them out of the wild. Remember that the person doing that doesn't have to pay any of the costs of hatching and rearing them to adulthood. They just net them out of their native waters, sort them, then package them up and send them on their way. Since their costs are lower, they'll be making more of a profit than you will be if selling at the same price point.
Thanks Mal! I am trying out a new approach to intros and think this works way better as I’m getting straight into the video, so if people clicked who don’t know me then they don’t get bored with me saying hi guys, etc.
Good point, but it’s a bit like discus. You still have to put a lot of effort and time in to breed them. And invest a lot of money and wait quite a time before you see any return.
Am I the only one who noticed that barley anybody talking about breeding fish for profit and how to do it is doing it or has done it successfully themselves? It's really really hard, you are competing with big farm in low wage countries where everything is cheaper and water and heat are often free. Even in eastern Europe everything is so much cheaper, no way you are able to compete from your attic fishroom if you want to make money. Just breed the fish you love to breed and sell them to other hobbyists to cover your costs and have a good time. If you want to make money, go flip burgers, it's more provitable.
Exactly! And that’s why I made this video! To tell people that breeding fish for profit is near impossible if done on small scale! Indeed just breed what you like and try to cover your costs!

17 years old?! Dude you'll be a super serious authority on all things fish (and retail) by the time you're 30!
Thanks man! I appreciate that, and indeed that is one of my goals/dreams! One day I’ll get there!

Exactly that! But you know what you are doing! But indeed for anyone wanting to do it, this is a great example!
Great editing, fantastic work!
Thanks Stephen! I did spend a lot of time editing this video! So it’s nice to see that people can see and appreciate the work!
Electric cost is turning me of the hobby the most I've been thinking about closing my room down tbh 😊

Indeed, that’s a pretty good summary of the whole video lol
Very good video, very well described and very true everything you said
Thank you! Appreciate it!
Well made video and good points - deserves more views
Thank you Graeme! I agree! But UA-cam can be mean sometimes… Give it a share if you want, that might help a bit lol
I loved the start Jack much better than usual 👍👍👍
