It took me couple watches to understand, but basically, if bringing someone back to life is impossible; That means Alphonse's body has to be alive somewhere, in order for his soul to remain in the armor
1) they did not let their mother suffer by bringing her back as a monster and 2) human transmutation was never going to work because at most it brings back a generic living human, it does not bring back a SPECIFIC living human It creates a human without a soul, which is bound to die and not exist. No soul that is not assigned to a body remains just like Al's soul Copied from another comment Here's the mental math Ed did to confirm Al can come back: 1. People can't be brought back to life 2. Al's soul is currently in the suit of armor 3. Al's either alive, or his soul is fake 4. He confirmed it was really Al and not a fake 5. Which means Al's body has to be alive somewhere 6. And since he pulled Al back from beyond the gate, that's probably where his body is 7. And if he can pull Al back, there has to be a way to pull his body back too
I mean, wasn't it clear that "the truth" took it? I haven't seen the rest of the show but that scene was pretty clear to me, they literally pulled his body.

I really love how this episode is about GUILT and trauma, It's really an emotional one. Something that I really like about this series is that most of the dialogue is really good. Each convertation is either good feedback or interesting point of view clash. There are lots of memorable quotes. That "Our child wasn't made to suffer twice because of me" really makes me emotional. So Al is sitting somewhere all night trying not to move so his armor doesn't wake up the whole house. I don't Agree, he doesn't return everytime to an empty home but to what he really considers family, Winry and his aunt and not having a Home is also a form of motivation as they can't slack off and are forced to move around the country, I think he was truly resolved to never come back to what his old house represented

You were correct in your assessment of the promise: Trisha promised Hoenheim that she wouldn't be the first to die. The significance of this promise is obviously to be revealed in the future.
ah i just love re-watching this show with you two! love feeling all these emotions again. i have to say i forgot how much i loved the way winry and ed's relationship grows and develops throughout the show. a lot of big shonen shows tend to be really awful at romances in my opinion, they either feel slapped together last minute or it never feels quite equal in development, but ed/winry are really well done in that it's never at the forefront of the story but how winry sees ed at the beginning of the story versus how she sees him now (and at the end) really grows and changes.
One thing I really like about the anime and the manga, over the course of the story they actually do very subtly age up Ed and Winry. Both actually look older at the end than the beginning, which is quite rare, frankly.
i love this show so much because its a perfect mixture of heartbreak and humor, you spend all your time either sobbing over how much these poor boys have been through and laughing at the comedic genius in this show
The way I saw Hohenheim’s meeting with Ed here is that we’re seeing it through Ed’s eyes in the moment. Much like every memory of Hohenheim we’ve seen, we see the version of the man that Ed is seeing. The light glare from the glasses, the stern judgement, it’s all very much coloured with the sight of a boy whose dad left for reasons he didn’t know and then just didn’t come back. As soon as Ed leaves the scene, Hohenheim looks very different. His posture changes, his voice changes, his glasses don’t look like that… when Ed leaves the scene, we see Hohenheim as he is, not as Ed sees him.
@7.55 lol what they did was DEFINITELY NOT what everyone would do at their age if they lost their mother- we are so used to seeing Elric brothers being state alchemists and very capable with their alchemy skills, but their talent and position in the army is extremely rare and extraordinary, Ed is the youngest state alchemist ever after all. And what they did was an absolute taboo, an unthinkable thing in their society even among the strongest alchemists. We adore Elric brothers for sure, and deep down their reasons seem justified to us (because they are children who want to see their mother's smile and we all feel that as fellow humans) but they committed a sin, they are flawed, they tried to play god, they are only and always human. They were child prodigies with too much power, overwhelmed with extreme grief and sadness after their mother's death and they messed up. They are paying the price for it with their lives, because of the 'equivalent exchange', because this is how life is. They deserve utmost love and support, but they also need to be called out for their mistakes to grow up and grow out of it. They did run away and they had to face it at some point. Ed's constant self-inflicting torture, guilt and trauma for years (same with Al and Izumi) is a proof of that, and it was cleared up this episode, human transmutation is that much of a big deal. Hohenheim really helped them out with his indirect tip about what really happened. His communciation skills are not the best, lol, he and the show have reasons for that. I am so excited, the show gets only better and better after this point, we are on a wild ride!
Oboy, so many egomaniac mistakes. (Most humans are egomaniacs, though, thinking the universe revolves around us.) _"We adore Elric brothers for sure, and deep down their reasons seem justified to us"_ "Justification" is a myth, it never exists outside the imagination. _"but they committed a sin, they are flawed, they tried to play god, they are only and always human."_ "Sin" and "flaws" are more myths. _"They are paying the price for it with their lives, because of the 'equivalent exchange', because this is how life is."_ No, it is not. Equivalent exchange is based on the idea of "value". Which is just an idea. In reality "value" is a myth. _"They deserve utmost love and support, but they also need to be called out for their mistakes to grow up and grow out of it."_ "Deserving" and "need/necessity" are even more myths. _"They did run away and they had to face it at some point."_ "Have to" ("imperatives") are yet another myth. They could have slipped on banana peels and _died_ while still running away.
But yeah, just like with Greed, Ling doesn’t appreciate how emotionally fraught it can be to not sleep, eat, feel… It’s both that Al always appreciated these parts of living to his very being, but also once you’ve lost them like he did you really miss them. And again, the fact he COULD bear the loss of feeling and eating, but not the loss of sleeping; I can relate to appreciating sleeping.
_"and philosophy."_ No, since there's no such thing as "perfection" (or "imperfection"), it's a myth. And so is "purpose" and "value". They're propaganda basically.
"I don't think you deserve that" SPOILERS Love that that is exactly what Hohenheim is thinking himself. In his eyes he thinks he has no right to act as their father because he believes those kids dont see him as such. It's not until he reunites with Al, and gets treated without any anger or distrust that he realizes he can still be their dad, needing a lot more work with Ed of course. In this episode he forced Ed to confront that situation because he knew it would be good for them. Thanks to Hohenheim they took a huge weight off their shoulders
@@miguelosvaldofloresdomingu8911 you think someone watching out for spoilers keeps reading after seeing "SPOILERS" in big letters? A post where a spoilery image is visible I would understand. Anyway, I put a space more between the warning and the comment
The problem that hoenheim shook Ed (and as a result Izumi and Al) out of was that they still were doing the thing that makes human transmutation a taboo. They _still_ believed that a human could possibly come up with some material _thing_ that could equal a soul, and that they simply failed to find the wrong thing. That arrogance is the issue, because you pretty much have to reject the idea that life has unique value to believe that - but that's what they thought. Showing them that they didn't even _almost_ bring back a person not only frees them from their guilt at having tormented their loved one souls, it also helped them to _finally_ understand why they were wrong in the first place.
Hohenheim is a character who’s initially confusing but overtime, you grow more and more fascinated by him. I'm not gonna spoil the rest of the series, but trust me when I say that he became the character I was interested in the most throughout this show.
it's tough but Ed and Al did need to face the truth so while Hoenheim was harsh, it was necessary. Had he said it to him any other way he would never have listened. And yes he has every right to talk to him that way, they tried to bring his wife from the dead without any regard for what she wanted and burnt his house down. If what they believed was true then they would have made the woman he loved suffer and die. Fortunately it wasn't her but even so I would be angry.
You can hear it when he asks "why did you burn down MY home". Ed thinks he abandoned them, but hoenheim doesn't see it that way because, well, he and Trish knew why he left.
I am an Asian. Hohenheim’s fatherhood reminds me the Asian parents. Even they love you, they won’t tell. They blame you when you do wrong but seldom to praise your good. (They will only do it in front of their friends not you) Most of them are too busy so not showing up in your life. They always try to be perfect model for you but never success. What you see is hypocrites but actually they are always feeling insecure. They always worry you will become them (their real own self), share same failure, same mistake with them. I will say Hohenheim is really a some kind of Asian.
The first meeting with Hohenheim in the manga is pretty comedic. I don't know why the anime doesn't include all of the funny dialogs between him and Ed
The show wants people to keep suspecting hoenheim is evil here, but the original conversation kinda made that harder to do. I think that's why they cut out everything except the brooding parts.
Hohenheim did exactly what a parent should do. He didn't try to be his friend, he told Ed exactly what he needed to hear to get Ed to keep moving, and he knew what Ed needed to hear because as he said himself "he's just like I was when I was his age"
😂 You gotta give their father a chance. He's been hard at work, and finally came home to bring warnings and an answer. Besides, he's grieving. He couldn't make it back in time for his wife. We'll see more later.
Thank you for doing more than 1 episode per week!! So much better than other react channels. I think fewer shows at a time and more quick releases is such a better model! (Particularly for shows that are complete). Subbed!
That was the dad's house, he built it. He didn't run up to edward and give him a hug because he JUST learned about his wife and what his boys did. He wanted to see how Ed felt first. He's been traveling so there was no place to call and inform him. Ed was mad and tossing insults and Von was a little mad about the house but seriously it was his house with ALL HIS STUFF IN IT AND ALL OF HIS WIFE'S STUFF, AND HE JUST FOUND OUT SHE DIED.
That man reacted pretty calmly to everything he ever owned, being burnt to ashes. But also, one of the things he owned, was an antique suit of armor....

I look forward to these videos constantly and immediately click when I see them
BTW, it seems that the reason Winry realized Ed had begun growing is because Al's sound began unbinding from the armor, hence his body stopped consuming so many nutrients from Ed.
Hohenhiem is definitely a jerk for leaving with no explanation. But he also indirectly, and purposefully released Ed and Al from a certain guilt they've been carrying. He wanted to get the message across that they didn't make Trisha suffer again. Those boys carry too much guilt for their age, it's good that one of those things was released.
we're 1/3 in and there is so many misteries yet to be answered... you guys have some great guesses and i can't wait for you to experience the whole story!
I gotta say, I really love and look forwards for their reactions, but damn, they get really sentimental and judge character veeery quickly without waiting or wondering the reasons behind why they did it lol
left a comment about hohenheim in the manga vs brotherhood but removed it cause I don't want it to be spoilery in any way, but!! love these reactions and can't wait to see you watch everyone's story arcs unfold ^_^
i don't know the comment about the transmuted body was not to tell them they can get their bodies back. it was to help them realize they didn't screw up and cause their mother to be brought back wrong in unbearable agony to die again. even the comments at the house were to bring those thoughts to the forefront so he would immediately realize what it meant when he talked to granny later. i don't think his biggest concerns were there bodies or if they hated him. he helped them realize what they needed to so they could stop blaming themselves. the question is how was he so sure that this was what was going on in their heads especially when he hadn't seen them in so long
Basically, the materials they used created a dummy body and put Alphonse's soul in it. Then Ed pulled that soul from the body inside the armour. This means he was never dead. That's why it was possible. Also, the reason why God took their body had more to do with them believing in equivalent exchange than anything.
I've never watched this show but I'm wondering if at the end, when Winry notices his shoulders looking broader, it's a sign that he's getting taller. And i know it's probably just he's getting taller, but it's right after he finally gets clarity on what happened to the Transmutation and Al's Body. Like the Stress and grief could have stunted his growth somewhat.
After you guys are done with this show, i would recommend you guys to watch Monster the anime. A hidden gem of an series i would say adapted by studio mad house the one who did death note!
You two should look up and listen to "Brothers" from the original Fulmetal Alchemist. It's a great song that depicts Ed and Al's situation and isn't in Brotherhood for some reason
All the people commenting things like "the dad was trying to tell ed it wasnt his mother to relieve that stress from him" need to stop commenting lol even hinting at things or putting ideas into reactors heads is spoiling. let them piece it together themselves. Even if they dont, its fine, thats why this show has great rewatch value

The real Gangster Hohenheim is here 🔥
ah i just love re-watching this show with you two! love feeling all these emotions again. i have to say i forgot how much i loved the way winry and ed's relationship grows and develops throughout the show. a lot of big shonen shows tend to be really awful at romances in my opinion, they either feel slapped together last minute or it never feels quite equal in development, but ed/winry are really well done in that it's never at the forefront of the story but how winry sees ed at the beginning of the story versus how she sees him now (and at the end) really grows and changes.
"You don't have to eat" is great, think of the time and money savings!
"You can't eat" is the part that's torture
Same with "you don't have to sleep" and "you can't sleep".
Same. I would really wish I didn’t need these things, but with option to do them if I wanted to.
One thing I really like about the anime and the manga, over the course of the story they actually do very subtly age up Ed and Winry. Both actually look older at the end than the beginning, which is quite rare, frankly.
My dude just went to the store for cigarettes. He literally came home and his kids burnt down the damned house. Let the man vent some steam!
i love this show so much because its a perfect mixture of heartbreak and humor, you spend all your time either sobbing over how much these poor boys have been through and laughing at the comedic genius in this show
Imagine those two reacting to Gendo from NGE...
This spark of hope , was bring by hoenheim.
How did you post that comment 2 weeks ago when the video was posted today ? I need to know

4:12 Note: Never get on Lola bad side. 😅
Hohenheim is such a complex character, reserving judgement about him is a good idea, his actions and intentions are very subtle till late in the show.
(Most humans are egomaniacs, though, thinking the universe revolves around us.)
_"We adore Elric brothers for sure, and deep down their reasons seem justified to us"_
"Justification" is a myth, it never exists outside the imagination.
_"but they committed a sin, they are flawed, they tried to play god, they are only and always human."_
"Sin" and "flaws" are more myths.
_"They are paying the price for it with their lives, because of the 'equivalent exchange', because this is how life is."_
No, it is not. Equivalent exchange is based on the idea of "value". Which is just an idea. In reality "value" is a myth.
_"They deserve utmost love and support, but they also need to be called out for their mistakes to grow up and grow out of it."_
"Deserving" and "need/necessity" are even more myths.
_"They did run away and they had to face it at some point."_
"Have to" ("imperatives") are yet another myth.
Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood really a masterpiece. Characters, story, processing, soundtracks and philosophy... All of them are perfect
_"and philosophy."_
No, since there's no such thing as "perfection" (or "imperfection"), it's a myth. And so is "purpose" and "value". They're propaganda basically.
"I don't think you deserve that"
SPOILERS
Love that that is exactly what Hohenheim is thinking himself.
He cares in his own way.
Edit your comment, the spoiler is clearly visible
@@miguelosvaldofloresdomingu8911 you think someone watching out for spoilers keeps reading after seeing "SPOILERS" in big letters? A post where a spoilery image is visible I would understand.
Anyway, I put a space more between the warning and the comment
Hohenheim literally made their lifes easier with a simple question he did great for a first meeting.
Life has no "unique value" since "value" is a myth, it never exists outside the imagination.
Hohenheim is one of my favorite characters. He’s very misunderstood in the beginning but is a selfless soul
Spoilers!!
Don't you mean souls? 😉
Sorry the opportunity was there and I couldn't resist it.
@@laurainathunderstorm hahaha yes I said that with the pun intended😂
Hiromu Arakawa, the author of Fullmetal Alchemist, just cannot write a miss to save her life. Everything hits dead-on.
Hohenheim is a character who’s initially confusing but overtime, you grow more and more fascinated by him. I'm not gonna spoil the rest of the series, but trust me when I say that he became the character I was interested in the most throughout this show.
@@kidus_1010 Fair enough. I edited the comment to make it sound a bit more vague and not as spoilery.
@@d.j.mulcahy1657 Yea I think that’s better 👍
@@kidus_1010 Ok, I edited it and now it should sound a bit more vague.
it's tough but Ed and Al did need to face the truth so while Hoenheim was harsh, it was necessary.
My favorite episode love seeing Ed and Al get motivated. 🔋🔋
It’s things like that that actually make me want to see those scenes. They sound amazing. I love it when Hohenheim is being adorkable :D
@@Kayta-Linda read the manga haha. Some scenes are better in the manga, while others are better in the anime.
dude when Al thanks Ed for telling him this and covers his face...i fucking die inside...it just hits me in the heart so hard. Al is so precious. ;_;
We're in the meat and potatoes of this show now. Watching your reactions is just wonderful. Love hearing your theories!!!
Hohenheim did exactly what a parent should do. He didn't try to be his friend, he told Ed exactly what he needed to hear to get Ed to keep moving, and he knew what Ed needed to hear because as he said himself "he's just like I was when I was his age"
Hohenheim pretty much doesn't want Ed and Al to like him. I think the way he treats Ed in this episode makes that pretty obvious.
Seeing your reactions make me appreciate these shows more
I just openes up youtube and the first thing I saw was this. Thank you for uploading, it made my night 10 times better :)
Subbed!
"I can't take all the night by myself" WHAT IF I SMOTHERED MYSELF WITH A PILLOW AND DIED
All that happy in the end, is because of the huge weight their dad took off their shoulders. That is what winry was seeing in the end
I am living for these FMAB reactions
like I've watched you guys for a while, loved the ATLA/Korra and Breaking Bad/BCS + even more stuff
but I think your immediate connection to this show might be my favorite of your series yet. I look forward to these videos constantly and immediately click when I see them
BTW, it seems that the reason Winry realized Ed had begun growing is because Al's sound began unbinding from the armor, hence his body stopped consuming so many nutrients from Ed.
6:35 For the argument of eating:
Not HAVING TO eat would be a great thing.
Not being able to eat is horrible.
The combination is probably unpleasant.
Not eating you could get used to. Not sleeping, though?
Really love how much you guys love the kids
I found your channel today from this series of reactions, and you go and upload another exactly when I finish the last one? Miracle workers I say.
_"But he also indirectly, and purposefully"_
Intentionally. "Purpose" is a myth, it never exists outside the imagination.

Do you just like randomly shoving your favorite quote everywhere? This is so weird.
@@Kayta-Linda It's just me quoting a fact. And it's obviously not randomly.
You guys didnt get it hes the reason that his sons & the teacher had the closure of knowing they didn't actually killed them.
we're 1/3 in and there is so many misteries yet to be answered... you guys have some great guesses and i can't wait for you to experience the whole story!
I gotta say, I really love and look forwards for their reactions, but damn, they get really sentimental and judge character veeery quickly without waiting or wondering the reasons behind why they did it lol
With hoenheim, _everyone_ does. You're pretty much supposed to.
05:09 this is a very important picture
left a comment about hohenheim in the manga vs brotherhood but removed it cause I don't want it to be spoilery in any way, but!! love these reactions and can't wait to see you watch everyone's story arcs unfold ^_^
i don't know the comment about the transmuted body was not to tell them they can get their bodies back. it was to help them realize they didn't screw up and cause their mother to be brought back wrong in unbearable agony to die again. even the comments at the house were to bring those thoughts to the forefront so he would immediately realize what it meant when he talked to granny later. i don't think his biggest concerns were there bodies or if they hated him. he helped them realize what they needed to so they could stop blaming themselves. the question is how was he so sure that this was what was going on in their heads especially when he hadn't seen them in so long
My favorite uploads these last couple of weeks. Seeing you full metal alchemist reaction is always funny.
Ah yes episode 20, the one where we go back to see the difference in reactions from the end of the series.
SPOILER: That's not the reason.
Every single episode of this show made me cry 😭
i like seeing Angry Lola talking about Punching Hohenheim....lol
am i the only one who cant wait for the blooper reactions yeah its far away but still it just shows not only how well the dub was executed but the bts was just soo fun too
I was watching the final ep today, and I couldn't help but to hear a certain character yell: FUCK HIM UP!, because it's my favorite blooper. Took me out of the moment.
ahh I'm so glad we didn't have to wait even longer for this
everytime i see them reacting to these kind of episode (not only fma) i just can not help thinking they would love watch haikyuu 😭 i need that in my life someday
Wishlist in order of likelihood:
1. Darevel
2. Berserk '97
3. K-On!
4. Deadwood
I doubt they would watch any of those. For example, I would like to see Berserk reaction, but in most cases they will go with the most popular one and a lot of trash is popular, so I am not holding my breath.
@@Wlof25 Yeah, Mob Psycho 100? Seems they've started down the path of trash shounens. :(
Its called fatherly love or tough love. Hohenheim meant well.
Yep, that's right. The real name for this anime is "FEELS metal alchemist."
Anybody ever wonder if hohenheim might be windy’s grand father? Her son was blonde. Granny brunette. Ho is blonde. They were drinking buddies. Not once was her husband mentioned.
This, in my opinion is THE best episode of the entire series.
I've just watched Rings of Power. How a show like FMA has more gravitas and drama and...things happening that other major American shows now? It is the writing!
In true, Hohenheim said what Ed needed to do for free himself from the self-judge
"my dude, dont piss me off so much" KEKW
not needing to eat is indeed a good thing. not being able to eat is torture.
I wanted to write this long time ago, but always thought nah ... however girls: Never doubt Hohenheim!
Last 2 episodes were the best out of the show. There isn't a single episode that isn't entertaining. Great reaction ladies. New sub here.
