The reveal of Hohenheim's face in the photo is honestly one of my favorite reveals in the show
I love the shot of him leaving and looking at Ed and Al. Like he didn’t realize that so much time had passed from the day they took the photograph, and suddenly Alphonse is walking. That it had already been so long, that he experiences time differently and their lives were going so fast and he wasn’t noticing
Ironically, because he had been so buried in his research, due to his determination to grow old alongside his family.
And he has so many voices in his head saying "do the right thing". Gotta sacrifice his own happiness. Got his affairs in order. He doesn't want to leave his happy place. The voices are right. Time to get moving.
I love this scene too! So many emotions and feelings expressed without words..
It's so sad to see Hohenheim's hurt when he leaves his family and it's even sadder to think that Ed only remembers his stern and cold look at the very end, he forgot or didn't notice the pained expression his father had when he first noticed him and Al in the hallway. Breaks my heart every time.
What we know about Hoennheim so far:
- He has an immortal body.
- He has a lot of self loathing and thinks of himself as a monster.
- He is afraid to be close to his loved ones because of whatever is going on with him.
- He wants to find a way to grow old and die with his family.
- Trisha was never in the dark. She knows everything and loves him regardless.
- He figured something out and decided to leave his family to go do something about it.
- He has been wandering the country alone for 10 years on whatever quest this is.
Fun Fact: As General Raven’s body begins to decay it will release gasses that will cause cracks to form. Even in death Raven will be the weakest part of Fort Briggs.
Also, you probably have been told by now, but the Gold toothed doctor was previously seen the King Bradley’s flashback
watching you both resist the urge to binge the whole series in one go is very inspirational, i think i originally watched it all in like 3 days when i first watched it, i couldnt stop

2 of the MOST WHOLESOME BROTHER SHOWS:
1. Haikyuu! not actually brothers but the most wholesome found family show of a volleyball team, no vball knowledge needed and one of the endings of all time. 4 seasons completed, about 90 episodes, and maybe another 24+ episode left to be completed in future seasons.
2. Space Brothers is about 2 brothers > 1 achieving their childhood dream to become an astronaut to go to the moon, 1 slowly realizing that his job sucks and he wants to follow his younger bro's footsteps TO THE MOON.
The chimera arc would break these two.

I recommend Fruits Basket. Wholesomeness, check. Found family, check. Parent issues, check. I can’t say it’s as good as FMAB, but it did make me cry and it also made me feel so happy. AND it’s only 63 episodes.

Hohenheim's story is the best part of FMAB in my opinion. When you started and hated him so much for abandoning his kids I was like "Yes, hehe, little do they know that he actually loves them very much. They'll never see it coming."

After listening to all you ask of for an anime, I'm even more convinced that HunterxHunter would be perfect for you two. Sure, it's long but every step of the way is worth it (even some arcs that are notoriously disliked but in my opinion are important and unfortunately stuck between ones that are legendary). Especially for people who love rewatching shows to find new details every time. It can be very dark and light, but the overall message it sends is pretty positive. Plus while the manga; and by extension possibly the anime may not be over it stops at a satisfying place.
i almost passed out when they mentioned hunter x hunter. Happiest moment of my life.

If you want ANOTHER SHOW about TWO BROTHERS going on an adventure I'd recommend "THE DRAGON PRINCE" on Netflix. The head writer for Avatar helped to create it so you get some combo animals and a beautiful fantasy world. And did I mention that Sokka's voice actor also voices the eldest brother? I'd love to see you guys watch this, its a great thing to watch after finishing avatar (at least it was for me)

It's already on their list. They were waiting for season 2 to be announced (which it has) and they might watch it once they're done with Mob Psycho season 2

It's about the relationship between a depressed boy without parents, who lost music as his outlet, and the girl is cheerful and happy and makes him happy and it is so wholesome and perfect and it will break your heart. its only 22 episodes. but hunter x hunter would be literally perfect for you. trust me, I have seen many many series and I've been watching you for a while and you would ADORE hunter x hunter. I just know that you will love the main characters so much
My recommendations for you are: Your Name, A Silent Voice (those two are anime movies so it's quick) and then for tv shows something like Haikyuu, Hunter x Hunter, Kaguya-sama: Love is war, Spy x Family which is a good mix between deferent genres like sports, shonen, romance, comedy and wholesome shows.

In my experience of watching many anime there’s only a few series that are as good or better than Avatar and Fullmetal Alchemist. In my subjective opinion series like Cowboy Bebop, One Piece (too long but has better characters than Avatar & Fullmetal), HxH (2011), Gurren Lagann, Golden Kamuy (10/10), Made in Abyss, Violet Evergarden, Vinland Saga, Haikyu, Monster by Naoki Urasawa, Land of the Lustrous, Your Lie in April, Mushishi, Berserk (‘97), GhostintheShell: Stand Alone Complex, Fate/Zero, Mob Psycho 100 (you’re already watching). These in my experience have the most memorable stories, feel good characters, and impactful scenes that will leave lasting impressions in your mind for years to come. Any of these would be great to react to!
Its a little darker than this show, but given where the story is going Vinland Saga is an excellent show yall may enjoy.

HunterXHunter is a wonderfully wholesome show that will absolutely hurt you, includes both found family and blood family bonds, has the absolute best friendship in all of anime, includes at least one character that has been abandoned by their parents.
It literally has EVERYTHING that is on your list. Please watch it.

Also another one of my favs FRUITS BASKET!! You guys have to react to it, it's such a good story about bonds - the good kinds and the bad kinds. It's honestly a really great show and the writing is amazing, also the whole cast and I mean the WHOLE cast is sooooo likeable ( expect for maybe the villains ) I love all of them!!!

im gonna recommend haikyuu even though hunter x hunter will probably end up being the way forward. haikyuu is different from the current anime you've been watching, it's not a bunch of powerful kids fighting, but it's actually a sports anime. the story is super heart warming and the cast is wonderful, the development as the characters grow is lovely to see. and i'm sure a lot of them will be joining the rest of your adopted kids haha
Haikyuu is actually amazing. I had never watched a sports anime before and didn't think it was my jam but I gave it a shot and was blown away. Honestly, in my own opinion HunterXHunter is the better story but I enjoyed Haikyuu so much that I'd be happy with them doing either one.

Dororo is something I think both of you would love. If you like sibling adventures, tragic backstories involving parents and grittiness mixed with purity/wholesomeness. In some regards it definitely makes me think of FMAB.
If you girls get that FMA itch, I highly recommend Golden Kamuy. It's an exremely unique anime, set after the Russo-Japanese war, and it features a lot of similar humor, lovable characters, adventure, learning about culture and stuff. Basically it's a treassure hunt show, where multiple interesting factions try to solve a riddle to find the loot of the lifetime. What sets it apart is it's historical setting, focus on things like hunting, food and learning about different cultures. But it overall has a FMA feel, with a lot of lovable (and some hateable) military men in blue long coats, getting into some pretty realistic action. It has 3 seasons, with a 4th one airing side by side with Mob Psycho III, and the story should be fully adapted soon, as the manga is over. It's the closest thing style wise, that I can think of, when it comes to shows like FMA.

If you want un-adulterated wholesomeness, 'Spy x Family' is exactly what you're looking for. Its a found family love story with adorable characters and a very sweet story. It's only 12 episodes but its everything you want.

The gold-toothed doctor first appeared in King Bradley/Wrath’s flashback. Discounting the Father of the Sins, he was the head of the team of scientists injecting the philosopher’s stone into the Fuhrer candidates.

learning more about hoenheim was one of my favorite parts of watching fma, he is such a complicated complicated character. you would for sure love hunter x hunter, it is a super feel good show about found family, child abandonment and friendship. made me bawl my eyes out though 💀💀

I would like to see you reacting to "Your Lie In April" or "Steins Gate". Diferent animes but writings are equal to FMA:BH in my opinion. And there are beautifull love stories with awersome character dynamics.

Kipo and the Age of the Wonderbeasts and The Dragon Prince both on Netflix, trust me both have great similar avatar vibes. Found family adventure type stuff.
Love how in the beginning of this episode hohenheim just pops up outta nowhere, stabs himself in the chest after saying a bunch of names, refuses to elaborate, and leaves just to confuse the hell out of the audience.
Ranking of Kings would be my recommendation. Found family, betrayal, no one is exactly what they seem, it’s amazing. Sadly it’s only like 24 episodes.

Imma be different here, and I'm going to recommend you 86 (Eighty-Six). It's a recent anime that has 23 episodes long, and it's one of a masterpiece of a series. It has action, mecha, military, drama-heavy genre, but with you guys watching it, I'm sure you'll love it.... Hopefully :)
Spy x family is completely found family wholesomeness, Demon Slayer has wholesome siblings, some found family, Gurren Lagann is good siblings again, and a lot of fun action

Echoing all the comments recommending Hunter x Hunter as a show to consider! It has so many of the elements you're looking for, from the wide range of lighthearted wholesomeness to deeply emotional moments, the depth of storytelling, the memorable cast of characters (very much going with the found family theme y'all are so fond of), and so much more! I can already see you both instantly adopting/adoring Gon and Killua as a new pair of favorite baby boys
I would still recommend Monster, Haikyu!, Rainbow Nisha, Ranking of Kings, Odd Taxi, and Spy x Family to the two. Hunter x Hunter is a good show, but I wouldn't be comfortable recommending another action power anime that focuses on minors with powers. It's getting boring otherwise.

HunterxHunter is a fantastic series where you will fall in love with the characters and it will crush you. Gon was abandoned by his dad as a kid, it's great
About the suggestions, I think Haikyuu would be perfect, since it is a somewhat long show with wholesome vibes and emotional/hype moments
Hunter x Hunter is also a great choice (though, at least to me, some arcs kinda feel dragged out)
There's also one of my favorite animes, Steins;gate, a show with plot twists, comedy, romance, mystery, action, and one of the best protagonists I've ever seen in an anime.
Really late here, but how i interpret him saying "I took this body" is that his original body was broken down when he passed through the portal and was reconstructed on the other side. So, in a way, it was a new body.
Completely random and I don't know if I anyone has said but I just thought I'd mention in case you hadn't noticed but given that Ed usually just has a ponytail when they're separated (like when Ed went to Xerxes) it's implied Al braids his brother's hair
SpyxFamily or maybe My Hero Academy. Spy x Family funny and wholesome. My Hero Academy has a lot of wholesome characters but some very dark villains.

Since I hear you're looking for wholesome shows, you might want to check out a nice 25 episode long anime from 1997 called Berserk. Okay, scratch the "wholesome", but it doesn't get more "found family" than Berserk. And as a bonus, you will never think a show is too dark after you've seen that show. Because it's THAT dark!
I'll just say, consider it if you're ever in need of emotionally compelling PAIN.

I think them watching Violet Evergarden would be entertaining. Its not exactly their criteria, but it'll pull on their heartstrings and its a beautiful show and journey for a shorter show.

Yeah, anime like FMAB is not common. It sets a really high bar. As does ATLA, on the cartoon side. They are literally, in my mind, in a league of their own.
Hunter x Hunter, Ranking of kings, Spy x Family, Monster, Gravity falls and To your eternity are my recomendations
ATLA and FMAB are my favorites for a reason. There are not a lot like them. The Dragon Prince did a decent job (same writer as ATLA), but these shows are truly gems.
Hunter x Hunter would be a perfect series for you two. But I also recommend "Assassination classrom" it's about an abandoned class of children, that have to kill their teacher, but the teacher is the most perfect thing you'll ever meet I promise. I've never met a soul this perfect

I hear you and what you are asking for is Kimetsu no Yaiba / Demon Slayer. It has love between siblings, friendship, good stoyline, wholesomeness and, obviously, PAIN. So don't worry. What's more it has a top of the class animation. The whole package.

i think one of the best parts of this reaction series is them being so flustered over the revelations and gradual build up of anticipation..."I dunno anything!" with excitement and eagerness. its hilarious and also hype at the same time.
Demon Slayer, Jujustu Kaisen, and Code Geasse, Hunter X Hunter, My hero Academia , and The Ancient Mage's Bride are animes i know you guys would love. Also a new anime coming up you should also watch is Chainsaw Man airing this October.

EDIT: I’d like to recommend Code Geass for another series to react to. It is still fondly loved by the anime community and has one of the best endings of all time.
Absolutely love this series. Thank you so much for having so many interesting conversations before and after the episode. I love to think about what I've just watched/played/read when I'm done, but it's rather rare (at least for me) to find people irl willing to participate in discussing lore, philosophy, art, how it relates to life 'n stuff like that in deep. There's just this pleasing buzz from watching you both talking, like my brain is really enjoying it all hahaha.
That said, would you consider a request? (I swear to God, I wrote no spoilers below) I'm relatively new to the channel and, chances are, you won't see this message. But it's worth a shot...? So... For the same reasons you enjoy FMA, ATLA and AOT... May I recommend Code Geass? I'll be honest, the first time I watched that show I wasn't really that interested (it was mostly the mecha theme that doesn't really vibe with me most of the time, people tend to go over the top with scifi sometimes and then it gets silly) but... It just grows into so, so much more, there are no loose ends and everything comes full circle... And I also got super invested into the characters and their motivations. It's really short too, the series has only two seasons, and yet also arguably one of the best endings in animation out there (side by side with the other shows I just mentioned, I can't pick the best one among them, I binge watched them all haha). Just, at it's core it's a drama, much like FMA and AOT, so bring tissues. There's a lot of good humor peppered in to help us to swallow all the heavy themes, so it's closer to FMA than AOT in that sense.
If you want something wholesome and Avatar-ish, you definitely want to watch The Dragon Prince 😆
Adventure time has everything you want. Wholesome, awesome plots, missing parents, sibling and romantic love.
It's crazy how this episode is titled Family Portrait, yet only the first five minutes cover the actual portrait. And in that 5 minutes, they throw every single thing that you "know" about Hohenheim out the window.
He's shown to be a sensitive, caring, albeit distant person. And that's extremely juxtaposed to how Ed remembers and talks about him.
Also AOT did the same thing that this episode did. They changed the context of the father leaving for the final time. Remember how you thought about Grisha leaving in the first episode of AOT vs. how it was when they went through Eren and Zeke's memories? Same thing here, when Ed remembers Hohenheim leaving, it was with a cold stare, but in the actual scene, he's scared, on the verge of crying, and his determination only takes over his face as he turns to walk out the door.
Hunterxhunter and demon slayer both have a lot of family experiences in the show and Both are great
oh I've been waiting for these episodes, all that bashing on Hohenheim for so long and you learn he's just doing things for his family.
It's SUCH a gut punch and it's perfect.
Especially when you hear what the thing Ed was told to tell him. That is the best and most painful punch to the gut I've seen in anime.

Anime fills niches.. so you have your combat anime's like dragon ball z, you have your adventure animes set in magical worlds, you have your combat tournament animes.. then you have some random ass anime that make up their own genre.. very very few anime are like FMAB.. they come around very rarely.. The number of shows that have an amazing first season but then drop the ball (Death Note and Sword Art online come to mind) are many
Based on your opening comments, yes I'd absolutely recommend Hunter x Hunter (HxH):
Similar vibe to ATLA/FMAB? check. (well, at least my top 3 shows are ATLA, FMAB, and HxH, so there's gotta be something similar)
Wholesomeness? check. (you will adopt new children immediately)
Will hurt you w/ good pain? check. (there will be tears)
Good storyline? check. (it has two of the best arcs in all of anime - there will be so much good discussion)
Siblings / found family? check.
Parental abandonment? you'll have to find out
One of the best soundtracks in anime? check.
I don't think it's as _consistently_ top-tier as FMAB (hard to do that for so many episodes), but the highs are definitely on-par or better than the highs in FMAB for me. Hard to compare the two. Oh and there are only 148 episodes (2 of which are filler/recap).

@@jbriggs06 Eh, it has a similar child-learning-fun-magic-system-and-has-adventures vibe. Granted, that's a lot of shonun but still the vibe I get is similar at first but get's a bit darker as it goes than those two.
@@michaelstollard7126 But ATLA and FMAB have an ongoing story whereas HxH's arcs are pretty disjoint, like videogame levels. And I don't recall HxH being as earnest or emotional as the other two shows either.
@@hirvale Exactly, HxH has some emotional moments but the main focus are the fights and how the magic work. Also, the arcs are very incosistent in terms of both themes and quality.
I think Monster would be a very interesting anime for you guys too watch

This episode is by far my favorite one in the series, while this one and the next one are some of the best to watch reactors see. I LOVE this episode for so many reasons, theres just so much happening. At the beginning of the series everyone hates Hohenheim for coming off as mean and abandoning his kids, then this episode just completely flips how everyone sees him. Its done so well and I cant wait for yall to see the rest of his story. Then after that insane intro to an episode, you get the search group in the tunnel and the first look at a new terrifying character, just enough info to leave you like "what the fuck was that?" THEN the episode continues to give with the pure badass Olivier Armstrong being the best and saying some of the best lines in the show. And just at the end after everyone who watches thinks "God Winry better not come up here", she of course follows Kimblee in. Then that after credit scene where you just know things are heating up. This episode is done so well and seriously nonstop information that leaves you braindead and/or speechless. Theres so much coming up I cant wait to see your reactions to, this series really is the best.
I completely agree with what was said at the beginning/what a lot of other comments say- Hunter x Hunter is a great show and I recommend it! Personally I like FMAB more, but this show is hard to top. Hunter x Hunter is a great example of found family and has some of the best characters. I just recently finished watching the anime Golden Kamuy (at least whats currently out), and I highly recommend that as well! Theres currently only 36 episodes out but it also has really cute found family dynamics and really interesting history/lore behind it. Plus one of the main characters is the voice actor of Mei Chang, and another character is Alex Armstrong's VA.
