This is super helpful. Like the first time this word actually makes sense to me. I was looking for replacement words (not just concepts) and this really makes doch make sense now. Thank you!
i am from Syria🇸🇾 i finished my engineering degree...now i am planning to do master in germany... i was hopeless of learning the languege...but after i saw your videos you really gave me positive energy to learn german..nd now i am starting again.. keep going anja🇸🇾🇸🇾🇸🇾🇸🇾🇸🇾🇸🇾🇸🇾🇸🇾🇸🇾🇸🇾🇸🇾🇸🇾
I’m a high school student from Russia, and I’d love to continue my studies in Germany. Thanks a lot with this incredibly useful video! You make the learning process so much more fun 🤩
This was one of my biggest points of confusion studying German.... this little tiny mystery word that would just kind of show up in sentences that I could otherwise understand simply by ignoring it. I even have a memory of asking German speaker *20 years ago* in class and getting an answer like they didn't really know.... something like "it's just there to make it louder" I had started to think of the work as a sort of underline, like "certainly" in English. The problem is it doesn't always work, because I've also seen it in context to work against what is being said. This explains a lot.
Hello Anja Ich bin Anita aus Indien.Ich bin Deutschlehrerin.Ich Unterrichte Deutsch A1. Ich mag deine Vedioes.Deine Videos sind Super und interresant. Vielen Danke Anja , Deutsch einfach zu machen.
Thank you Anja so much ! I am here 6 years and cant count how many times i asked and no1 could answer. This shows how good Teacher you are ! DANKE ANJA ♥
Doch, indeed! While DOCH is much more flexible, INDEED captures the meaning. However, in English it is seldom used in conversation these days, except when things get dramatic and the user is expressing indignation. Or, a school teacher, for example, wanting to impress a student might say: "Indeed, you should know the answer!" Emphatic, unimpeachable and personal, INDEED, like DOCH, makes a point of making a point.
um etwas beten = to pray for something (past part. = gebetet haben) um etwas bitten = to ask for something (past part. = gebeten haben) [I'm just a beginner, so I'm assuming maybe where she's from, they might actually use it the way she demonstrated in the video (or maybe it's an older/alternate way to say it?) but I just haven't seen it in the Barron's 501 German Verbs book (2016); however, in the Langenscheidt dictionary (1993), under the entry for "beten" it says: "v/i. (ge-, h) pray (um for), say one's prayers; say grace." Also, in the same dictionary, under the entry for "bitten" it provides: "v/t. (irr., ge, h): j-n um et.~ask s.o. for s.th or to do s.th."
I met you here in 2018 .I swear you changed my language skills...through following your every media account , I can understand, read and sentence contraction in some areas.. slowly by slowly, u will be perfect in german speaking .love you big 🥰👌
Summary 1. It reverts or counters a negative question or statement. kinda like "on the contrary" but unlike in English, doch can be inserted within the sentence easily. 2. Make a command or statement sound very impatient or angry. can't think of an equivalent in English. 3. An added expression when speaker assumes that the listener already knows the subject that is being spoken about. "duh" - for English, it usually has a negative connotation but I suppose in German it can be neutral (clarification?), unless it crosses into point number 2. 4. Softens the tone of an order and make it more convincing. "try" --> "you should try it/ try it" The video is great, please still watch it! Schauen Sie (doch) diese Video an (added doch so that I don't sound like a book or instruction).
Thank you Anja! You really do make it much easier to understand than any other source I’ve found. Including my German boyfriend who is an absolutely terrible German language teacher 😂
Hallo Anja, Hier bin ich wieder, Karen. Das war sehr interressant. Danke fuer lustiges Videos. Habe ich das doch richtig geschrieben? Wann nicht, doch ich mehr versuchen.
1) A: "Kommen Sie nicht aus Korea? " B:"Doch. Ich komme aus Korea." 2) A: " Ich habe zum Supermarkt an gestern gegangen." B:"Kann nicht sein. Ich habe dich vorgestern im Supermakt geshen." A: "Du bist richtig dass Ich doch vorgestern im Supermakt gegangen habe." 3)A: " Werden Sie morgen mit mir zur Bibliotheck kommen?" B:" Ich habe leider kein Zeit." A:"Bitte kommen Sie doch vielleicht ein Stunde spaeter."
Oh gosh, I would have been so screwed without the subtitles at the start. You're both speaking way way way way, WAY too fast. I really appreciate you explaining 'doch'. It's frankly an utter nightmare for someone like me who is a native English speaker, where such a word does not exist in my language!

Nice to see someone else expand on their notes in the same way I did! You came up with the same words I did!! 🙂
Danke fur mir helfen!
The word "Indeed", I think would be a good translation.
I agree! I came here to say that “actually” is a very good replacement word in all these scenarios

Best teacher ever 👌
Nachdem ich diesem Video gesehen habe, verstand ich doch besser wie man das Wort „doch“ nutzen. Vielen Dank Anja dafür!
um etwas beten = to pray for something (past part. = gebetet haben)
um etwas bitten = to ask for something (past part. = gebeten haben)

Du hast vollkommen recht. Um etwas bitten. Nicht beten. 👍🏼

thanks your the good videos
Thanks for making learning German fun Anja! :)
Liebe Anja, i think in this context, it's "j-n um etw.(A) bitten", not "beten". "beten" means "to pray"!!!
Summary
"try" --> "you should try it/ try it"

The way I relate to 'doch' is, it fits in situations such as "why don't you....", "on the contrary ......".

beten - gebetet
(um etwas) bitten - gebeten
Hallo Liebe Anja.
Stimmt das, was du gemeint hast?
um etwas beten (to pray) oder bitten (to ask)
Ist “Doch” wie “already” auf Englisch ?
Vielleicht "doch schon" meinen Sie.
Ich werde nie Deutsch lernen! Doch, das wirst du! 😉😊
Hallo Anja, Hier bin ich wieder, Karen. Das war sehr interressant. Danke fuer lustiges Videos. Habe ich das doch richtig geschrieben? Wann nicht, doch ich mehr versuchen.

Ich liebe die Deutsche Sprache
Das ist ein tolles video. Danke schön. Du bist sehr süß 🥰🥰🥰
Where do you put it in the sentence? It seems like it moves all over. Doch, verstehe ich nicht.
Finally i understand the complete meaning of this word. It has been bothering me for so long.
In Afrikaans we have a word tog that is used exactly as doch in German.
Was sollte man den Ausdruck „das gibt‘s doch nicht“ benutzen? Wenn man überrascht oder schockiert ist?
Damn,Anja is such a foxy secretary )))
Anjaaa how can I search your German academy
Ausgezeichnet!
»Doch« is a tricky word. Danke.
Then I think that some possible translations for "doch" in swedish would be: "jo, "visst", "väl", "ju" and "ändå"
1) A: "Kommen Sie nicht aus Korea? " B:"Doch. Ich komme aus Korea."
2) A: " Ich habe zum Supermarkt an gestern gegangen." B:"Kann nicht sein. Ich habe dich vorgestern im Supermakt geshen." A: "Du bist richtig dass Ich doch vorgestern im Supermakt gegangen habe."
3)A: " Werden Sie morgen mit mir zur Bibliotheck kommen?" B:" Ich habe leider kein Zeit." A:"Bitte kommen Sie doch vielleicht ein Stunde spaeter."

Voor de Nederlanders: “Doch” kan als “toch”, “toch wel”, en “jawel” gebruikt worden
