    My Star Trek Journey.
    I discovered Gene Roddenberry’s Star Trek The Original Series in 1972 and fell in love with it even though I was only 8 years old. In 1973, Star Trek The Animated Series premiered on NBC Saturday Morning Cartoons, and kept me entertained until it finished its run in 1974.
    Like many other Star Trek fans, I waited and waited as the powers that be kept saying we would get Star Trek Planet of The Titans, then Star Trek Phase 2, until finally premiering Star Trek The Motion Picture in 1979.
    As the Harve Bennett movies of the 1980’s began, I was at the theatre on opening night for Nicholas Meyer’s Star Trek II : The Wrath of Khan, Leonard Nimoy’s Star Trek III : The Search for Spock & Star Trek IV : The Voyage Home, William Shatner’s Star Trek V : The Final Frontier, and Star Trek VI : The Undiscovered Country.
    Before the decade ended, we got Star Trek : The Next Generation. Which, among other things, introduced us to the three letter Star Trek designations with the introduction of TOS for The Original Series, TAS for The Animated Series, and TNG for The Next Generation. We also were introduced to Rick Berman, who went on to give us Star Trek : Deep Space Nine ( DS9 ), Star Trek : Voyager ( VOY ), and Star Trek : Enterprise ( ENT ).
    Berman also finished out the second run of Star Trek movies beginning with Star Trek Generation, Jonathan Frake’s Star Trek First Contact, Star Trek Insurrection, and Star Trek Nemesis.
    Shortly afterward, the star of the new millennium, JJ Abrams rebooted the movies with Star Trek using a new cast for the actors playing the TOS characters. Taken on its own, this movie; along with Star Trek Into Darkness and Star Trek Beyond were responsible for a completely new Alex Kurtzman Star Trek resurgence. Although many older fans didn’t like Star Trek Discovery ( DIS ), Star Trek Picard ( PIC ), or Star Trek Strange New World’s ( SNW )
    Oddly enough, brand new Star Trek animated shows have enjoyed a far greater success amongst the fan base with Star Trek Lower Decks ( SLD), and Star Trek Prodigy ( PRO ).

    Great video- the three footer has always been my favorite model. Wasn’t it loaned to Brick Price’s Wonderworks, though, and not Abel’s shop? The shot of the model being constructed was in their shop, and I think this was before Abel was even brought on. Also- I know “Phase II” is how most people refer to the project, but the show was actually going to be called “Star Trek II” by the time most of the work was up and running (writers guide, internal memos, scripts, etc.). The “Phase” nomenclature was…”phased”… out fairly early.

      Sometimes, trying to sort these things out is like nailing jello to the wall. 😀 When doing my research, I found that the photo was suspected to be the last known photo of the model. So I jumped to the conclusion that the photo was taken in Abel's studio. Which turns out to be wrong (thanks to tips from loyal fans like yourself). The photo did indeed take place at Brick Price's place.
      But the concept that the model disappeared while in the hands of Abel was sourced from a Rick Sternbach conversation where he said that he had actually laid eyes on the model along with several key pieces of artwork and a model of the proposed triangular Enterprise from Planet of the Titans. He said all the items disappeared over a weekend. So that meant that the model had been returned by Price after the photo was taken.
      Also, it was Majel and Susan Sackett who publicly said that it had last been seen at a special effects house. So if you assume that all three of them are correct; that would put it in the hands of Abel's company.
      Of course, it's all conjecture. And I may even change my mind about the situation as time goes on. It's such a tragedy that so many of these folks are gone and can't offer any further comment on the matter.
      By the way; Memory Alpha has a good sourced write up on this subject. I have found them a great source when looking to double check Star Trek information.

      You know; I am so glad that you said that. This is a very small channel; and I don't ever really expect it to get big enough to actually make money. But I have stumbled on to a niche here that just doesn't get a lot of videos on. So I am having a ball doing research on things I haven't thought of for years. I just completed the Horror @ 37,000 Feet review and have decided I'm going to do a whole bunch of these videos on all the made for TV horror movies we grew up with. An, of course, the Star Trek videos are great because I'm trying to do things that no one else has done yet - and let me tell you - that ain't easy with Star Trek. However, the whole Studio Filming Models series is going to be a blast. I'm putting together a video on the Smithsonian refits right now. I just love this stuff!

      The model shop building miniatures for Phase II was Brick Price Movie Miniatures. The name Wonderworks wouldn't be used untilthe early-mid 90s when Brick brought John Palmer in as a partner. Brick brought in Don Loos to help with the fiberglass work.
      At 33" long, that would place the model at 1/350 scale.

    As a modeler/3D Modeler and someone who has worked with measurements in models for over 50 years I am telling you with the scale of the desk, and drawers in those pictures that are from Abel's shop/office that the model on the desk is an 18 inch - 1/650 scale AMT kit model.
    Not only that but the bottom of the saucer gives it away, because on the first original 33 inch model the bottom of the saucer was flattened out to soon on the cone/bowl area protruding from down from the center of the saucer, and it lacked the sensor dome.
    Anyway I have worked with little wood lathes like the one in the pictures, and I have a very similar desk that is metal like that one, although mine has drawers on both sides and the drawer is 13.5 inches in width, so use that as a guide. Even though the model is about a foot further back on the desk, if it were 33 inches long it would appear to be twice as large in length and height as the width would not be as noticeable from that angle.

    There was one appearance of the 3-foot model during the second season that is worth mentioning. When the View-Master of "The Omega Glory" was shot in December 1967, the 3-foot model was used with the AMT model of the USS Enterprise for the cover photo of the View-Master package and another (3-D) photo in the story (the second photo was taken from a slightly different angle). The 3-foot model is in the foreground of the photo and represents the USS Enterprise; the AMT model is in the background of the photo and represents the USS Exeter. The AMT model is angled and lit so that we can't see the registry number or name on the model (which was NCC-1701 and Enterprise), because obviously the production team didn't want to have to build a new AMT model just for this one shot of the Exeter that wouldn't appear on air. That said, I've often wondered what registry they would have used for the Exeter if they had chosen to build a prop for this photo. It probably would have been some variation of 0, 1, 1, and 7, like NCC-1170. Do you think that would have been a better registry than the one they eventually used in the "remastered version" of TOS (NCC-1672)? I have to admit that I prefer 1170. 🙂
    EDIT: I watched a few more of your videos and realized that you DID mention "The Omega Glory" models in one of the videos I hadn't seen when I wrote the above. Here's the video I'm talking about: ua-cam.com/video/8dcMm_uk1DY/v-deo.html

      Hi Kenny! So nice to meet you!
      No need to apologize at all. I would rather have over communications that under or wrong communications. You would be surprised at the amount of information I've collected in the past 6 months or so as I started this channel out.
      I'm kinda shy to point out that this was one of my real early videos. Actually it is kind of crazy. The videos on Trek took off almost immediately and the channel is growing so fast that I can't reply to all the comments now. Not like I used to. But every now and then one catches my eye.
      Your question on the registry numbers actually reminded me about something I have in a Matt Jefferies interview where he actually talked about coming up with the numbers. And he said something I had never heard before or since.
      He said that to be sure the numbers could be easily read on screen and not mistaken for others. So in order to do that, he would not use the numbers 3, 6, 8, & 9.
      That was brilliant. And yet, even though it was in an interview he did for the old Star Trek Communicator magazine; no one else ever bothered to make a note of that at the time. And now that he has since passed on; most fans will never know it.

    • @kennysuit8839
      @kennysuit8839 2 роки тому +2

      @@TREK-WORLD To better explain why I said the "View-Master" Exeter registry would have used 0, 1, 1, and 7 if the prop crew had made a special model for those shots -- these would have been the only numbers available to the prop crew because those were the only numbers on the AMT decal sheet. (That's why the Constellation's registry was NCC-1017, as you explained in your other video). Regarding your comment about 3, 6, 8, and 9 -- you're exactly right (or to be more precise, Matt Jefferies was exactly right 🙂), these numbers are hard to read. To this day, it's difficult to decipher some of the registry numbers on the wall chart in Commodore Stone's office on Starbase 11 (in "Court-Martial") because some of those registries include 3, 6, 8, and 9.

    There's another Lost Enterprise that not a lot of people know about. "The Making of Star Trek" by Stephen Whitfield says something about Matt Jefferies cobbling together a small, four- or five-inch maquette out of balsa. Modding up a complex shape like the Enterprise out of balsa, however, would be such a complex task that I can easily imagine Matt using found objects, like jar lids, bottle caps, old markers, and popsicle sticks.
    I'm tempted to build one like that myself.

    0:54 *far* more than 3 models were built for the TV series. the 11 footer went through 3 versions, as did the 3 footer. At least 3 modified 18" AMT kits were used to represent Enterprise (Trouble w Tribbles), 2 other damaged Starships in other eps, and a fleet of 4 in Ultimate Computer.
    In addition, at least 2 or 3 versions of an approx 3" high model were made... one being the very first rough draft before the 33" , and one being the one used voodoo-style in "Catspaw".

    NOTE THE HUGE BOLD LETTERING ON TOP OF THE SAUCER! & the lack of points sticking out on the front of the unlighted nacelles. So what IS this model?!

In the original series, they always fired phase and photon torpedoes straight ahead or straight behind. The kind of shot your describing was used in later Star Trek series. But there was no reason they couldn't have done it back then except for the lack of creative thinking. Also, most of the weapon shots were reused to keep production costs down.

      Actually, the Smithsonian never got the 3 foot model. I've even got a memo now from Roddenberry mentioning that he loaned it out to someone and couldn't remember to whom.
      And yes, they do have both of the metal 3" ones and the 4" wooden one. I haven't ever seen a photo of the 4" one that I could validate. But I do intend to wrap up a small video on these little guys; and when I do, I will check with someone that will know if any reference photos were shot of it over the years.
      I may do a video just on their collection, so that we can review in one place the different ship models they have in their possession.
      I learn more and more every day about this stuff, as the videos spread enough that "inside" folks have reached out in encouragement. I sometimes fee like a kid in a candy shop. lol.

      So, I am still digging...... But while reading *way* too much material on the Smithsonian restorations.... I stumbled across a mention of an "emitter" on the underside of the saucer. But it was a real small "blink and you'll miss it" mention with no photos. Let me know if you can find something on it. I will keep looking. I would love to get a pic and highlight it in the upcoming video.

      Naval Construction Contract. It was first documented in The Making of Star Trek. NX stands for Naval Experiment; but I am not sure where that was first documented.

    Which model of the Enterprise ended up in a pool?

    • @TREK-WORLD
      @TREK-WORLD  2 роки тому

      None of the actual Enterprise models ended up in a pool; although some folks may have heard that in connection with the missing 33" model.
      But there's a "destroyed in a pool" legend around at least one of the other studio models - the Romulan bird of prey. I guess I'll cover that in that video later.

      @@TREK-WORLD cool thanks. I could have swarn I’ve seen a photo in a book long ago, and it was a large model, around 6 feet. It may have had something to do with Matt Jefferies, like I said long time ago. I’ll do some digging.

      @@devjaxvid If you find something; let me know. I believe that one of the Refit studio models was 6 feet. But I haven't started my research yet on those. It's crazy, but even after over 50 years you can still find things that most fans don't know. I have something I uncovered in the Galileo video I'm doing right now that contradicts a commonly held belief. No spoilers now though. Got to wait for the video. lol. There was a youtube video that had a fan made enterprise tooling around underwater as if it were maneuvering in space. It is marvelous!

    • @TREK-WORLD
      @TREK-WORLD  2 роки тому +1

      Hi! I'm not entirely sure about who took the photos; but my guess is it would have been the Howard Anderson folks as I don't think that the Film Effects folks ever did effects shots with the 3 foot model. It could have been Datin, but I haven't seen alot of materials from the family's personal collection.

      @J B In that case, I was more than happy to remove the slide. I wish I could tell you what their sources were; almost certainly probably on Pintrest; which is where I found almost every one of the photos in the video. I found the one sheet as well as what appear to be several crops. Obviously, if you kept the negatives after all these years I wouldn't want to possibly devalue them. With very little exception, it is next to impossible to identify how private collection photos are leaked.

      Hi there! I've actually been able to track your contact sheet down. So at least you have some idea of where the leak's from. It is indeed on pintrest without any attribution. Here's the link : www.pinterest.com/pin/556827941436181599/.
      I think you may be able to ask for a takedown. But it may be on any number of sites now that he had put it up. He apparently has at least one of the actual full sized prints up as well. If I can help in any way, please let me know. Good luck!

    You left out the real story. Gene brought the 3ft model home, and his son threw it in the pool. It got ruined. 20 years ago, I worked for Unobtainium where we built replicas of the 3ft model, and that's what Matt Jefferies and Mike Okuda, etc told us. It got destroyed in the water. It no longer exists :(
