I bought a 4430 with 13000hrs and a blown engine. Replaced engine with a combine engine. Tractor seems to work good, im sure the 2 speed has been done but im not sure about the rest of the tractor. Transmission shifts good but sometimes it will grind just a wee bit when shifting between 2nd and 3rd mostly from neutral to 2nd. Adjusted the linkage and that has helped but the synchro's could be worn. Might have to dive into the top shaft one day. That 4430 of yours is going to be one tight tractor.
The 30 series seem to be a little fussy on engine RPM to ground speed to get a smooth shift from second to Third. Or from neutral into gear you almost needed to push the clutch in and wait that half a second. The 40 and 50 Series was much better
Well I know you find that in my barn when getting directions lol. Sounds like a major undertaking to complete, you make it sound easy. Good thing you have all that good help around there now!😉 You could let her do a few additions that she wants on it since she’s the one running it all the time… This will be an interesting rebuild for sure!
Haha, that was fantastic. I'm so glad I stumbled on your channel. We have a 4430 that wasn't well cared for and I'm constantly in there replacing parts. I appreciate any videos I can find that shows what all's in there. Makes it so much easier to do these repairs myself when the time comes. I'm really looking forward to seeing this restoration!
Seems amazing that the 30 series (including my 4230) that were built in 73 are turning 50 this year. A couple years ago 🙄 when I was a kid they were brand new. 🤔
That is going to be a real nice 4430 when you get it finished.....nice rare barn find Jon! I did aquire a nice barn find once, stopped in to buy a 6 pack of barley pop at a old country store...bought a JD 50 WF 3Pt for 800.00 Runs great and still own it. Nice shop sir! That 3020 would be a nice giveaway....if only I was young LOL!
Hey lost track of you for a while. I just foubd out how old i really am.! Lol I didnt realize you did shop work. Thot it was all your equioment. I just found a 4240..Was told it was hooked to augers most of its life. Tite front shifts like new and no leaks on rear..Carry on !!
Very excited for these 44 videos!! I run a bunch of the 20, 30 and 40 series tractors. I have upgraded 3 tractors to 20.8/42 rears and buy good used tires. Great haying tractor tires. And make those tractors look amazing!! I would like to see in-depth video on upgrading the hydraulic break aways to 50 series. Also a video on adjusting transmission linkages on the 4430 when you put it back together. Thanks again Jon. Good stuff
Some people ask why would you put money into an old tractor like that. But there's no way you can replace them. Fantastic Hydraulics, comfortable cab They Ride pretty okay easy to drive
Couldn’t agree more. I call these tractor, heirloom tractors. I will have tractors to give to my grandkids some day. Hard to believe, but these tractors from 10 series and on up will be 100 years old and still have paying jobs earning their keep. Mind boggling!!!
Thanks, going to feel good to have it done Talked to the guy at Ziegler they have a customer that has a 48 row 22 inch planter that does 44-inch corn with covers in between. Do you know anyone like that down by you
@@jonstevensmaplegrovefarms3754 No, everyone is "make it black" in the western MN glacial lake bottom. Want to own my own strip till bar but the cost of entry makes it a challenge. Been thinking of switching to 30" just to be able to find lower priced used striptill rigs.
It does seem like a tractor made in the early 1970s is a hundred years ago -- how time flies! I can see the title when you get it back together "first start after sitting in pieces for eight years". Vice Grip Garage is a good one to follow in that theme (and even a few tractor finds), I learned a few tricks and bad habits. .. Go for 30inch rows. I'd think you don't need dual tires if regen ag is working properly? Where I have it working I can walk but where not it's a slick bog (frozen under the muddy warm day or two). Can you do a quick disconnect loader option? Not the bucket, the whole set of arms since they are often in the way? Perhaps a 3pt quick hitch bale spear and/or unroller (there are some clever designs on youtube) instead? You want to show off that tractor not hide it behind bucket arms anyway.
If I was going to pull the planter I would need the duels to make sure I got enough tractor. It's not that I would be fighting mud or loose soil. It's just having enough tractor. That 12-row planter is surprisingly heavy, the 4640 at 19000 lb was a good match, the 4430 at 15,000 he's going to have his hands full? Since we are wrapping all the hay I don't know if I need a loader to start out this spring? We have the loader on the Massey but a loader on this tractor would save a lot of hours on the big Massey and make it easier for my wife to move hay
i have a customer with a ‘74 4430 i just rebuilt the 158 loader. resealed the steering motor…. that seems to still leak a little after start up then stops.. trying to figure that out. it was pouring out before. it seers hard one way then smooth the other. that mean the steer motor needs rebuilt?
You put the new seal in that little drop down housing and a new packing or o-ring on the back side. There's a chance that Orin could have been pinched when you put it up there. When you took the old seal out if you put just the tiniest scratch in that housing the new seal might leak between the housing and the seal and not leak between the shaft and the seal If it's a very early 4430 or it has a 20 series style steering metering box under the dash then that being out of adjustment could be why it steers hard one way and not the other
Funny you mentioned the barn find Plymouth Super Bird. My old butcher has a 69 Charger Daytona 426 Hemi. One of seventeen built. The guy he bought it from was using the car to haul plywood. I guess the guy a handyman. This was years ago and probably one of the first ones to be restored. It's spent all it's time since being haul in an enclosed trailer to car shows. He also has a 66 charger prototype which probably is really a preproduction model with a 426 Hemi. Bet he hasn't put a thousand miles on either of these cars. I'm guessing someone pulled some strings at the proving grounds in Chelsea Michigan and was able to buy the car after testing. They don't allow that anymore and I'm sure a lot of that has to do with lawyers.
I would be the best love that man ever knew if you would have offered me them cars. No woman would have ever been able to compete. LOL huge classic Mopar fan
@@jonstevensmaplegrovefarms3754 I am a big Mopar guy too. It cracks me up to see the price tag for a new Challenger and as I look for a nice cruiser all restored for a lot less money and a lot more style, plus a tune up can be done with a screwdriver. I had a 71 Super Bee 383 with a hot cam and Crager wheels it looked pretty cool from a distance, but it was unruly on wet roads. And snow? Forget it. I sold it and got a pickup because I was starting to do a little farming anyway. You could be driving 45 mph and floor it and the back wheel would go to squealing.
Carter good to see you back. How have you been doing? So we bought these for tires with two of them mounted on the Step Up rims for Seven Grand and today's price it would be about 10 grand
I've got a semi retired 4240 tucked up in a back shed. I don't think I'll sell it to the first desperado that calls in. Depends how desperate for cash I am after another year of farming I suppose.
If I put 30k into it, I have 150 hp tractor with very good hydraulics that can do everything I ask of it very well, For 50-60k dollars I could get a newer used tractor that is high hours and in the life of the loan might need a major repair For 60-70k we could get a new little tractor that could only do a couple of the jobs the 4430 can do, so then it would be back to lots of hours on the massey. A late model tractor with equal or better hydraulics and horsepower would be 140k-180k, simply not affordable.

Is putting all that work and money worth it it doesn’t seam sustainable to me but I’m not smart in tractors like you can you explain thanks

Thank you that explains it . If Deere redid it that changes everything good thing you are good at fixing
Having a dealer rebuild a tractor like this, oh manypu would have 50k minimum
