Actually ritual cannibalism was still practised in the New Guinea highlands during World War 2. Due to the rugged terrain many tribes had little or no contact with the outside world & were even unaware of the war unless it crashed into their vicinity. For some reason they didn't like the fact that the Japanese were indiscriminately slaughtering their people, but it should be noted that initially Australia pressed them into service.
Aware of Kuru & will again point out the geographic isolation - not defending the practice. Went on an anthropological expedition in the mid 70's. Also aware of the colonialist exploitation of indigenous people in PNG, forced labour etc. Know about Sudan. Hard to have a nuanced discussion in this forum.

Also met Michael Crouch IRL several times, whose father was the British attache to the Sudan in the 40s-50s. So I know plenty about the Sudan. He'd go on to be the British attache to a lot of the middle east during decolonisation (survived a RPG being fired into his living room).
AFAIK in the 40s/50s/60s/70s the practise would've been pretty much limited to the Fore people. But for the PNG PM to say it didn't happen at all, reveals that he knows virtually nothing about PNG. Why would he? Practically all the political elite in PNG spent their teens/early 20s in Australia and have the Australian diplomas and degrees to prove it.
It might be true, probably a bad idea to say it anyways. He doesn't really have proof that he actually got eaten and didn't like drown or something. That there were cannibals doesn't really mean Biden's uncle got eaten.

My stepdad was in New Guinea during WW2. He told me it was the scariest of all when they came upon a huge pile of human skulls. He had been in a battle that lasted three days, but this scared him more.

There were definitely cannibals in PNG 70 years ago. I wouldn't be surprised if there still was.
It stopped at some point, the last confirmed case of Kuru (the disease from eating human flesh) was in 2009. Its a prion disease, so it stops with your death... But that would've meant that person ate another human as recently as 1949 to 1999. The fact there were hundreds of confirmed cases and deaths every year in the 60s, definitely means it was a more widespread thing than the PNG PM cares to admit.

I think I can affirm. My dad was stationed in New Guinea and told us it still practiced cannibalism. In fact, the GIs were told to lay on back, with arm around necks with their handguns under their pillows in case the cannibals came in slot their throats and then cannibalize them. In his photo albums, one was dedicated to shrunken heads the cannibals had eaten. So it is not too far fetched that an island with cannibals would eat Americans.

Cannibalism wasn’t outlawed in PNG until the 1950’s. It’s technically possible. Sorry that this is a sore spot for PNG, but cannibalism didn’t largely end until sometime in the 1960’s. If his uncle’s body was never recovered, it’s a very real possibility. Some tribes did eat bodies that dropped. Sadly, there is still a remote tribe in PNG that does still practice ritual cannibalism.

Nah, it's 100% not true. The military actually refuted Biden's claim. The official report is that his plane did crash, but wasn't shot down, and it crashed into the ocean, not over land.
So the odds he died from cannibals rather than, ya know, a crash into the ocean is rather low.
