6:35 Can you take too much glycine?
    6:50 How to take glycine
    6:55 Why you need glycine
In this video, we’ll discuss a very important amino acid: glycine. Collagen is a main component of connective tissues, tendons, ligaments, and cartilage. About ⅓ of collagen is made by glycine.
Your body can make glycine, but unfortunately, it doesn’t make very much. If you're not getting it from the diet, you could be deficient. Unless you’re eating the skin and cartilage from meat, you’re probably not getting enough glycine.
Glycine is needed to make the most important antioxidant for all of your cells, glutathione. Without enough glycine to make glutathione, you can’t detoxify your body. This can cause a buildup of toxicity, leading to inflammation.
Glycine is a potent anti-inflammatory agent and is an essential building block for many enzymes and proteins.
Here are some of the many important functions of glycine:
    • Makes heme in your blood
    • Important for gum health
    • Essential for DNA
    • Building block for catalase
    • Supports sleep
    • Supports the liver
    • Can help fix a leaky gut
    • Detoxifies uric acid
    • Supports blood sugar
    • Helps with weight loss
    • Reduces visceral fat
Glycine can also turn into glucose to be used as fuel. Certain parts of the body, especially the brain, need a certain amount of glucose. If you’re not consuming glucose, your body can make it. Glycine is a precursor for glucose, but don’t worry about it bumping you out of ketosis. Glycine stimulates the hormone glucagon, which opposes insulin.
If you’re not eating animals nose-to-tail, if you’re under stress, taking medication, drinking alcohol, or exposed to toxins, you can become deficient in glycine.
You can increase your glycine intake by consuming gelatin! Try making your own gelatin using Knox Blox and using a natural sweetener like stevia. You can also take a glycine supplement. The average person needs about 4 to 10 grams of glycine per day.
Bone broth and pork rinds can increase your glycine intake, but you need to consume a lot to get enough glycine.
As we age, we need more glycine. Increasing glycine intake can potentially help people with osteoarthritis, osteoporosis, hair thinning, insomnia, gout, and kidney stones.

I had a herniated disk about 15 years ago. The pain was so intense I would scream in agony as I CRAWLED to the bathroom. The doctor said I would need surgery. After hearing the horror stories from other co-workers who HAD the surgery I decided against it. I had remembered an elderly lady I knew who had hand pain from arthritis who took gelatin (I had read an article about it in the 1990's and told her about it). She had lived in pain for decades until she took the gelatin. After about 2 or 3 weeks of hydrolyzed Knox gelatin (at the time you could buy a months supply at the grocery store for about $15, but they stopped selling it years ago) the back pain disappeared. As long as I take gelatin daily I have NO pain at almost 70, but if I stop taking it within a few days I feel a nudge to restart it. My back feels like it did when I was 18 as long as I take the gelatin. I purchase 20 pails of it online (now about $170 for hydrolyzed gelatin) that lasts almost a year.
I still have the DVD with the MRI images of the disk as proof.

Instead of taking glycine supplements, you should take collagen protein, or eat foods that are high in collagen. If you take pure glycine supplements, it competes for absorption with the other amino acids. If you eat collagen protein or foods with high collagen content, you absorb the glycine easier into your system. Gelatin and the other methods Dr. Berg talks about in the video are great! Thank you for the wonderful information, as usual!

    • @JackDisturber
      @JackDisturber Місяць тому +12

How it competes with anything if you take glycine on empty stomach? I add it to black or fruit tea for instance that I drink between meals. Glycine is a lot cheaper than collagen and easier to take given its taste and solubility, especially if you want a clean collagen without any glyposphate or whatever was in the initial source. Its a smallest amino-acid so it being somehow "hard" to absorb is unfounded

    • @bbpitner
      @bbpitner Місяць тому +13

@@JackDisturber Glycine requires other vitamins and minerals to signal your body to create collagen. So if you take a glycine supplement, you have to have vitamin c etc. in order for it to do its job. A lot of collagen proteins on the market already have all of the other ingredients necessary for your body, and the glycine is already in collagen form. Making it easier to absorb, and better than taking glycine.

Wondering if it would help if the 4 grams a day of supplemented glycine was taken as 1 gram at a time once every 3 hours while awake? I wonder if spreading the supplementation out that way would help more to be gradually absorbed and used more effectively with a more constant supply over the day, especially with breaking down insulin resistance over time and slowly detoxifying over the whole day, instead of popping a large "whole day" amount pill one time and then hoping your body can deal with it all at once?

    • @bbpitner
      @bbpitner Місяць тому +2

@@rvmommabear I am not sure about this. It sounds like it could be very helpful. Especially when you consider age, and metabolism, spreading it out could help a lot. Currently I'm taking 20g collagen protein in the morning as my first meal. That seems to be working for me very well. After two days my beard was incredibly soft. Try your method and see if it works for you! If it ends up being too much, I would try just taking it all in the morning.

Thank you, Dr Berg! You are the best.
    Here are my tips:
I buy Agar Agar (seaweed Vegan gelatin) and toss some in my dog stews.or
I bloom Beef Gelatin (Amazon) and add it to hot dog stew after cooking.
Ditto for myself. I add Agar or Gelatin to most of my curries, stews, soups, along with seaweed when I have it.
I make desserts like Chocolate Jello which is milk, cream, cocoa, monkfruit extract, beef gelatin.
I buy Bulk Powder bags of Glycine, Magnesium Glycinate, Potassium, Vit C, MSM and take 1/3 tsp once or twice a day mixed in water, lemon juice, AC vinegar, and a bit of MDH Pani Puri Masala which makes a great cooling drink. The Glycine adds a sweet note, which offsets the vinegar and lemon. Pani Puri Masala is an Indian savory spice mix that is salt, rock salt, green mango powder (tartness) pepper, cumin, and other spices. All safe and healthy. It is an amazing tangy taste great mixed in water or plain yoghurt for an instant salad.
I also make homemade Indian Kulfi ice cream with gelatin, evaporated milk (from scratch), cream, cardamom powder, monkfruit, a dash of raw honey, ground almonds, crushed raw cashews and raw pistachios. Gelatin is optional here. How you flavor it is up to you - mango pulp, almond flavor, rose flavor, saffron, lychee, coconut, etc. Mix and freeze in small cups, no ice cream maker needed. All good ways to eat gelatin.

I have severe inflammatory arthritis after 3 bouts of Covid where every joint is agony as the cartilage disintegrates.
As well I had a fall last year and smashed my ankle with 3 fractures and broke my leg as well as 3 compression fractures in lower spine. Pain runs down both legs. The only thing that has helped other than morphine and Naproxen is caster oil.
I am so serious … I refused to believe it would be of any use, but it changed my pain levels from an 8-9 to a 3-4. I will now will try glycine. Thank you for this.

Glycine is found in various protein-containing foods, particularly those that are high in collagen or gelatin. Some foods that are good sources of glycine include:
    1. **Bone broth:** Bone broth made from simmering animal bones and connective tissues is rich in glycine.
    2. **Gelatin:** Gelatin, which is derived from collagen, is a concentrated source of glycine. It's found in foods like Jello, gummy candies, and certain desserts.
    3. **Meat:** Animal meats, such as beef, pork, poultry, and fish, contain glycine, especially in connective tissues and skin.
    4. **Seafood:** Fish and shellfish are good sources of glycine, particularly in the skin, bones, and cartilage.
    5. **Dairy products:** Some dairy products, like milk, cheese, and yogurt, contain glycine, although in smaller amounts compared to meat and gelatin.
    6. **Eggs:** Egg whites contain glycine, along with other amino acids, making eggs a good source of protein.
    7. **Soy products:** Soybeans and soy-based products, such as tofu and tempeh, contain glycine, although they may have lower levels compared to animal-derived sources.
    8. **Legumes and beans:** Certain legumes and beans, such as chickpeas, lentils, and black beans, contain glycine, although the levels may be lower compared to animal-based sources.
Incorporating a variety of these foods into your diet can help ensure an adequate intake of glycine, along with other essential nutrients. 🤗👌 😉

yup yup yup! BEEF BONE BROTH IS A MAGICAL DRINK! the amount of glycine in a cup of bone soup can range from 500 mg to 1700 mg (0.5 to 1.7 g) Warm it up and drop a couple of tspoons of butter.. Wow.. so addictive.. you'll get more than enough "glycine" by drinking a couple of cups of this every day.. and the bonus is Beef Bone Broth is super rich in collagen and about 8 to 9 gram of protein per 1 cup. I personally mix in 2 tsp of Beef Gelatin Powder.. for another 8 grams of protein.. The amino acid composition of gelatin is approximately: 21 percent glycine. 12 percent proline. 12 percent hydroxyproline. Mix the Gelatin Powder in cold, then warm up. Drinking Bone Broth.. makes these valuable amino acids more bio available than any other source!

When I make chicken for dinner, I cook in the smallest baking dish for the quality of chicken I am making. I only use chicken with skin. When it is done, I poor the juice/fat in a smallish container and put it in fridge. What happens is the fat creates a crust, and below it is a wonderful flavored (the seasoning I put on the chicken) gelatin! I eat some the fat with it --- wonderful!! I guess it would be considered an aspic. This episode got me thinking that making jello --- gelatin with a good broth instead of water and stevia would be more enjoyable. With regard to protein, insulin and glucagon, I find that paired with regular exercise (such as walking multiple times a day and doing resistance training) my glucose actually goes _down,_ most likely because the protein is being shuttled into my muscles. Counterintuitively, if i get more fat, my glucose may go up gradually. I think this is because the insulin spike isn't as pronounced, and I've been low carb (used to be keto, but I'm high-protein now, and rarely measure very high ketones) for five years. If I do a workout and have a protein shake, my blood sugar will mildly spike then come way down, and return to a level lower than it was before. I know this because I'm using a CGM. I time my meals around my exercise to maximize protein absorption.

Hi Dr. Berg, I've been following you for years. Thank you for all your amazing videos. I make chicken bone broth in my crock which takes about 2 days. I always strain the broth using cheese cloth. Question, do you think straining the broth will remove some of the collagen? Thank you!!

My mom is Chinese and makes chicken feet which is pure collagen. My sister and I love it too. Look up Chinese recipes if you’re interested, it’s a great nourishing dinner once every or every other week!

I've been aware of this for a while, so I make it a point of eating the cartilage at the end of chicken bones. I learned that from my dad, who grew up as an extremely poor farm boy and who always ate "nose to tail" as the Dr. said. It took a little getting used to, but I've never had an issue.

if you cook soup with beef guts flakes its may also improve your depresiv state by reintroducing bacterias in your stomac that are good for digestion.

I love glycine. I do the gelatin, I do the Knox and I also take a supplement at night and you get great sleep. :-) And I love my hair skin and nails and I’ve never had joint pain in my life so Dr. Berg is so great spreading the word. :-)
