When the Real World Impacts Tokusatsu
Вставка

- Super Sentai, Kamen Rider, and Ultraman have been impacted by real world disasters before. Despite showing monster attacks alongside life and death scenarios, tokusatsu hero shows are not immune to changes brought on by disasters in the real world. There are three particular cases where an event in the real world has had a profound impact on various tokusatsu shows.

Also, during the earthquake of 2011, photos show that amidst the damage, two statues of Kamen Rider 1go and Akaranger were still standing.
Of course. A hero won't be so easily defeated
@@I_am_always_correct BUT ULTRAMAN WAS DESTROYED SO GOD FAVORS US TOEI FANS
lmao
I hate people like you
Tsuburaya Production even have a volunteer team to cheer up kids after 2011 tsunami.
Fanboys like you just make the tokusatsu fandom better.
@@wakpijor1368 Tsuburaya tried to be something they were not. They were already in a fucked up state when Tsuburaya lost the case to Chaiyo in 2003. Unlike Toei, we never took part in lawsuits and charity events.
@@archangellegion7180 What do you mean "Ultraman was destroyed"
I almost feel like crying every time I see that Kamen Rider Ichigo statue surviving the 2011 tsunami. There's just something powerful about it.
He stood his ground to defend the city
Not only Ichigo but Akaranger statue also surviving the 2011 tsunami too
Surprising, am I right?
@@dannystavs2003 Yeah, it kinda is.
I think what makes that so powerful (and I guess philosophical) is even in the darkest hours, never give up or lose faith.
Not going to lie, the Ultraman section made me teary eyed. I have no idea why, just because I don't cry, even when I'm sad.
I was young when the earthquake happened, so it never really emotionally hit me. Just hearing about Tsuburaya and all they did and said hit me emotionally.
I've only really been watching Kamen Rider (I started watching Toku back in July) but once I'm done with all the Heisei seasons, I plan to go watch Ultraman.
Kamen Rider Fourze will always have a special place in my heart because gin is probably one of the most beloved protagonist I’ve ever seen.this show taught me that you can true people again and the important of friendship and with that thank you Kamen Rider Fourze
This video is why I love tokusatsu just because of the actors and the crew helping the country itself. Kind of feel proud of being in this community. Once a ranger always a ranger kind of stuff in this video.
As soon as he even said Ohranger I knew exactly what he was going to say. The entire show changed after episode 8 leading to major balancing issues for most of the season. Comedy just didn't fit with this season. But it's understandable that they really did not know what to do and it really showed.
As soon as you said 1995 I knew it was going to be about that cult
Yeah there's really no getting around that part. I did a bit of research into them for this video and...yikes yeah, there's a lot of stuff I didn't feel comfortable going into (and would have been tangential) so I decided to stick to the main event and who the leader was.
@Amazing Spiderman Fan 2002 aum shinrikyo
Amazing Spiderman Fan 2002 There was a earthquake in 1995, which killed thousands of people then a terrorist cult appeared, which has a major effect on Choriki Sentai OhRanger (Sentai version of Power Rangers Zeo). Because of those events happening, they had to make OhRanger light-hearted since it will be insensitive to kids, because the villains are terrorsists.
@Amazing Spiderman Fan 2002 Aum Shinrikyo was a doomsday cult where it's founder claimed to be the reincarnation of Jesus Christ and made up a prophecy about WW3 starting in 1995. When that year came, the cult had prepared sarin gas bombs and put them in Tokyo subway trains. The terrorist attack affected nearly a thousand people, killing 13 and gravely injuring 50 more. They tried blaming the attack on the US or China to start some international incident, but no one bought it and they were eventually stopped. They tried a few other gas attacks like it some time later, but luckily they were stopped or didn't work before anyone could get hurt. Doomsday cults, man. They're some scary shit.
A cult that wants to bring about the end of human civilization.
Yes, that was fast, you reached 1k subs in short period. Your "Downfall of Sentai" video made me subscribe. I wish I have more audience in the west like you.

I’ve always felt that ToQger was written as something of a reflection of the disaster that struck Japan in 2011. The heroes of the story were just kids, who were displaced from their hometown by a darkness that was consuming Japan, and there were times when they weren’t sure if they’d ever find their way home. I feel that the darkness was symbolic for the destruction from the earthquake and the tsunami, and whenever the heroes rescued each town from the darkness, that was symbolic of efforts to rebuild after the disaster. Near the very end, the Red Ranger is looking at the possibility that his teammates will make it home, but he won’t. I feel that at that part of the story, the Red Ranger represented people from the communities surrounding the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant, who couldn’t go home because of the radiation. Maybe I’ve read too much into ToQger, but I don’t think so. ToQger’s story is sad enough by itself, but it’s heartbreaking when you consider that it was probably influenced by the 2011 disaster.
Kamen Rider Ryuki is pretty influential upon the Kamen Rider franchise. A video about that would be pretty interesting.
i kinda find cool and nice that Forze got onto that way to cheer up, it actually made the series an lot good
Sometimes censorship of dark theme about society are not always avoidable, if you done it right it can be a growth of show and people to learn and understand.
If you ever want to make a sequel to this...there is a lot of instances of real world events changing Ultraman. In Ultraseven...episode 12 is banned from rebroadcast. The Aliens (Spell Seijin), were a human like human creatures that almost resembled victims of the nuclear attacks in Japan in WW2. (cause of their burned skin) They had to feel on blood of children to keep them alive. This obviously was distasteful and was looked as discrimination against these people.
Episode 26 of the the Ultraseven series was removed from rebroadcast for a while cause the monsters Star Bem Gyeron splashes into the ocean and causes a tidal wave to wipe out a power plant. Obviously this is too close to home for the 2011 earthquakes.
I like to imagine what could've been if that horrible terrorist attack didn't happen and Ohranger was allowed to be as dramatic as it wanted and not the hodgepodge we ended up getting.
Gdi its still 8.30 morning now, and im crying from reading the translated tokusatsuhero tweets :''(
Where can I read the translated tokusatsuhero tweets?
An interesting fact, the 2011 Earthquake also had Toei change up some of the ideas for Suite Precure, another one of their properties. Apparently it was supposed to darker then it was, but changed it to also cheer children up in Japan.
Can you please do "Executive Meddling on Tokusatsu" please.
The reason I like your channel is because your videos are well constructed, well written and (as rude as it may be) aren't awkward like a ton of other toku related channels. Plus you do more than just recap or review series. I'm really looking forward to your channel growing more!
Congratulations on the success of the channel. This is just the beginning.
That explains why ryusolger has a gingaman feel despite lost galaxy jp dub outperforming gingaman
I've find this channel in recommandations and honestly it's really interesting to see another side of Tokusatsu. I really enjoy your work.
Very interesting and original video topic.
I have also read in interviews/documentaries with Tsuburaya staff members that 9/11 also impacted the direction of Ultraman in the early 2000’s. The Ultra Series, for a while after the 9/11 attacks, shifted from the light-hearted tone in Ultraman Cosmos to the more grounded, definitely darker world of Ultraman Nexus. But Nexus, like all Ultra shows, still maintained that key theme of never giving up hope in your darkest moments.
You deserve the channel growth you’ve been getting recently. Every video is filled with interesting info for fans.
On that note, do you have any plans for an Ultraman/Tsuburaya video in the future?
Thanks a ton, I really appreciate the comment!
And yeah, I've got a few ideas rolling around for Ultraman and Tsuburaya content that I'll get to! (I really wanna do something on Ultraman Orb)
Currently watching rn,
The transition from Sentai to Ryuki was a bit sudden that it took me a sec to realize you had moved onto the next one (even though as it happened, you were saying "Now lets jump into....."). Just felt like there shouldve been some sort of pause before hand or maybe you said it really fast.
Loving the content. The music is very relaxing, your voice keeps my attention, and the subject matters are quite interesting. Great work, can't wait to see what else you have planned :)
Oh damn. You're channel did grow. Looks like 1000 subs since the Zyuranger episode. Keep up the thing you're doing. It's good stuff and a lot more interesting that the usual cynicism that I find on many Toku themed channels.
Wow! It was really fascinating to learn how Real World tragedies have effected Toku especially Gokaiger and Fourze. I watched both and had no idea about the background.
Love these videos. Even as a hardcore viewer, I didn’t know about all of these things
I believe local heroes in Japan were created after the earthquake to boost morality.
amazing video.
talking about returning actors , you should talk about how is seen to be a toku actor or something like that
That was pretty awesome with how the Legend War in Gokaiger got started. I love it when companies listen to their fans!
Just binge watched your whole channel. Well, there weren't many videos in the first place, but quality over quantity. I'm seriously tired of those uninspired Watch Mojo toku videos like "TOP 20 HEISEI KAMEN RIDER POSES" or other copycats of already done to death formats like Cinema Sins and finally I'm seeing something worthwhile.
Really love your "essay videos", and that within less than 10 minutes you manage to put so much information, at the same time not leaving the viewer confused. You're definitely not going easy way and you're picking some interesting topics that both outsiders and fans might find compelling. Keep up the good work!
Hey man, thanks a lot! I really appreciate comments like this. Not necessarily doing this for praise but it totally feels great when people appreciate work that's put out, I'll definitely keep it up!
Well someone hates Marcosatsu
Aw man, last one was truly wholesome, made me tear up a little
Dude your vids are what i wanted to find all these time in relation to toku stuffs.
Most channels are like only reading stuffs from wikis
i never realized how much toku was impacted by tragedy
Love to see more videos like this!
I love this stuff, someone to explain the unseen side of these shows. It makes me appreciate them even more.
Love your videos! You have quickly become my favorite UA-camr. Keep up the good work.
I also remember reading that the entire reason Ultraman Cosmos was created was due to an uptake in child violence in Japan and the producers wanted to create a hero who was a pacifist to show that violence wasn't always the answer.
You did well doing your research on this subject. I hope your channel grows more and see more videos about Kamen Rider including Black & RX.
I'm happy your channel is blowing up, your videos are really interesting, this is one of my favorites so far
Subbed. Great video, I'm not sure how I didn't come across your channel sooner ! Tokusatsu forever ! !
ohrangers 1st episode is the best 1st episode out of all super sentai
This was a very enlightening video to watch. Makes me more interested in tokusatsu.
Funny how the real world can alter fiction and vice versa
I am definitely looking forward to your next video!
ah yes when i was child when i saw this Ohranger (not zeo), it was very hard feeling about the story, how they struggle.
but the tv is not finished the air or i dont remember i'm not continue to watch it.
i live in indonesia, both saban and toei aired but got more frequent and continuously from saban which maybe the story lighter for younger age.
Just want to say I’m new to your channel so keep up the amazing work . Take as long as you can
Very good video and in depth analysis. Love it and please make more related video. 👍
There was also a earthquake during Ohranger's run.
You neglected to mention how Go-Busters overarching plot was an allegory for the overwhelming grief brought on by the 2011 disasters.
Is that why Japanese people liked the MMPR dubbed more than Ohranger?
That's a factor yes. I agree that Zeo was way better than Ohranger as it handled the Kingranger's character better in our version. Trey/Jason arc was the most enjoyable watch of the whole show.
I know im late and all put can you please inform me about the whole mmpr dub bieng better than ohranger
Hiroshi Fujioka i remember see him in a video where he went to meet a fan of his in Kamaishi, Japan
that survived he magnitude 7.3 shock generated a small tsunami
t
Great job!
Interesting coorelations made here.
Keep up the good work man. I’m loving your channel so far.
Thanks! Doing my best getting these out regularly
This is very lovely video😢
I'm not crying, you are..... *sniff*
I preaciated tokusatsu n sentai
Greacefully thanks for this
You got a new sub.
Maybe look at what happened at Decades finally please? 🙏🏼 Keep up the good work tho 👏🏼👏🏼
very emotional
I like your essay-style videos on tokusatsu since nobody else seems to be doing it but here are some things I noticed with the video production:
1) You speak as if you are whispering, making it hard to hear what you are saying often, especially if you are saying a Japanese name or word. If you spoke louder and enunciated on purpose, it would be much easier to hear/understand you.
2) The lack of subtitles is a huge disservice to your viewers. I understand that tokusatsu channels are already niche but with all the Japanese words you use, it is hard to understand what you are saying at times. Also, if a viewer wanted to delve more into the points you talked about in your videos, subs would help them easily Google the terms you used.
Keep up the good work and I hope to see your channel grow with more unique content!
Great video. Please speak a little louder though next. I had to turn up the volume to hear you in this one.
It's good to know there tokusatsu fans over the western world.
Welp, now we can include Kiramager now.
Well done
You know...as much as ppl hate Shirakura Shinichiro...he was enthusiastic about what happened with the disasters that occurred during the mid-90's so for better or worse,Ryuki (somewhat of Agito and Kuuga through toys) was my entry to Kamen Rider other than Saban's Masked Rider. This was my thought of what Kamen Rider is,pushing the boundaries of what Black has given us as well as Shin - J.
Though I will not disagree...Kamen Rider Fourze was a breath of fresh air and it was possibly the best written KR show despite it being irregular from its norm.
So now I'll also have to watch Kamen Rider and all those Sentai. Japan, when do you stop?!
Sentai never really touched military themes after Ohranger. Though they have had police themes often.
They had Go Buster, and it was crippled by bad writing, low amount of merch/low merch sales/ranger keys eating into sales, and later on, very low views as time went on after the 2nd 3rd of the series, to the point of making a sillyer 2nd opening.
It was that moment when Yasuko Kobayashi, the main writter of Go-Busters, suffered from writing fatigue, meaning she no longer replicated the same hit that was Samurai Sentai Shinkenger.
Ressha Sentai ToQger at least showed that she still got her "It Factor", despite the low ratings that got during the entire year.
Love the cgannel!!!!!
It makes me really sad that Fourze is more or less unpopular in Japan. Maybe kids were into it at the time, but now, those toys are some of the cheapest stuff you can buy used, and even well below the normal retail price still new in the box.
In the last 2 years, Ultraman has visited my kids in school at least twice. We live in Fukushima in an area that received a lot of refugees in 2011, so I guess they're still doing this stuff to help out. It's kinda awesome.
If I have to be honest, I don´t think Ryuki succeeded at portraying the message they wanted to make about everyone being the hero of their own story. That´s mostly because characters in Ryuki besides the main 3 (Ryuki, Knight and Zolda) barely developed, and out of said 3, the only one that did despicable acts and learned from it was Zolda.
Every other rider was either cartoonishly evil or underdeveloped as hell (or Raia). And none of them offered any insight on what some other people see as justice with the exception of the alternatives (underdeveloped) and Tiger (cartoonishly evil). Gai, Scissors and Ouja where 100% evil douches. Zolda, Knight, and Imperer didn´t really saw themselves as heroes, but as people who do shitty things to survive. Not even Raia and Ryuki saw themselves as heroes, but as people who tried to do the best out of a shit situation. The only one who really fits that description is the main bad guy. One out of 13.
It doesn´t help that they relied so much on the concept of "you shouldn´t fight because killing is bad", even having an entire arc where they tell a child that fighting isn´t cool (which is kind of stupid since it´s accidentally telling the intended audience to stop watching the show). Which misses the point that just because you fight and stop bad guys it doesn´t mean you should kill. The show doesn´t even explore the idea of taking away the killer riders powers and just stays with a restrictive mentality of "Fight Rider=Kill Rider"
Not saying the show should have had the heroes murder the bad guys, but the actions they do directly endanger other people and are in some ways responsible for future deaths (Ryuki bringing Ouja his brother, saving Ouja from dying in the mirror world)
It´s honestly one of the weirdest Rider shows if you want to talk about justice because by the end nobody really learns anything about it. In the last episode, they straight up say there is no justice in this fight, which means the last 50 episodes where just a pointless fight that had no meaning.
Last thing: Fourze is amazing.
I like your this video.
I like your style, but talk louder.
Anything Tokusatsu is always good.
Why does the audio get lower when talking about the cult?
Can you do a Anime Tokusatsu video
The guy sounds like he was half awake when he recorded.
good video
Actually Carranger was the anniversary
So this happened after my 9th birthday which I never heard of.
Surprised you didnt mention how 3/11 was reflected in Shin Godzilla
refresh my mind what was 3/11
@@technodude458 that was the day of the triple disasters on March 11 2011. The earthquake, tsunami and nuclear power plant meltdown. It was handled poorly by the government and was vented in Shin Godzilla
Space Policeman Of Space ah so that's what it was thank you for the refresher
Even the original Godzilla was wwii/nuke commentary
Can someone tell me where I watch the power ranger Battle Royal show
Oh.. i was surprised by the kamen rider with the 11/09 , while most of the shows just ends tuning down the show.. and make a lot more childsh and boring... kamen rider makes a really serious and good message .. i'm pretty impressed.
I liked this video. Although... Kamen Rider For-Zay?
2:14 *whistles*
What character is that at 2:43 ?
That's Kamen Rider G3 from Kamen Rider Agito
I don't think Zeo would have been adapted for Power Rangers if the cult attack happened
and also now
Sorry for asking a Power Rangers question, but I just have to:
Did the Sept. 11 attacks affect Power Rangers in any way? (I'm a curious person by nature.)
Yes. A scene in PR Time Force was altered because of the 9/11 attacks, if I recall correctly.
Man i loe your videos, i really do, but please, please, could you talk a little louder
This is me trying to talk louder, haha. I'm just a super quiet dude in general but I'll definitely try to project more in the future.
okayy hahaha, keep up with the videos, they're really great
Its pronounced "Fours" as in "4's" Not "Forze/Forzee". The e is silent.
Bruh, I turned everything to max volume and can still barely hear you
Honorable Mention:Power Rangers Time Force and 9/11
Why are you whispering?
Japan is better with danger then humanity
All these detailed, researched videos... And you got the full title of Gurren Lagann wrong.
It's Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann. Dude, what gives, were you too tired when you were editing this? A quick Google Search would immediately help with that.
These are quality videos, but don't push yourself, man.
Yeah I got no excuse for that one, honest mistake. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
@@LostInTokusatsu Hey, it's cool, man. At least it's just one.
Be careful next time, yeah? Just take your time editing future videos so this won't happen a lot. And don't deprive yourself of sleep when doing so; I've been there.
Hmm didn't know that about Fourze. I still think it's a very very weak show but done for the best of reasons so it is no longer my least fav.
