Excellent lesson for judgemental busy bodies and saints who've never been caught. When someone calls you out or shuns you because what you believe or do does not live up to their standards my answer is "Christ died for me while yet sinned". I love the God of Israel and he loves me. I believe that His Son shed his blood for my sake. What more is needed.

Naaman was just like the thief on the cross that trusted in Jesus. The thief never got a chance to do any good works, other than rebuking the other thief, and Jesus assured him that he, the thief, would be in paradise with Him, Jesus, that day.
Salvation produces good works, good works don't, can't, won't produce salvation.
Thank you for your teachings Dr Mike!

The thing with Naaman, though, is I bet he did do many great things for the Lord. I can't prove it, but I betcha anything the Lord moved in his life and on his heart.... over time. The Lord teaches us things in our personal walk with Him. No, it doesn't effect Naaman's salvation one iota, but I'll betcha Naaman was filled with the Holy Spirit which led him to many truths.

Michael is an absolute blessing for nerds like me, but here he proves that he's a blessing to anyone on planet earth. What an inspired message. I love that man. A couple thoughts on Naaman: even though he had nothing to bring to the table other than "you are definitely the one, true God," I'd betcha that, over time, God revealed more to him. I'm not talking about the ritualistic stuff or the legalistic stuff, but in his heart, God taught Naaman things. I'd bank anything on it. Our walk with God is a process. We don't always get it right, but if we remain loyal with that childlike faith in our father, He will get us through this old life and one day, out the other side of it. PRAISE YOU, LORD!

When Jesus heals all of those "untouchables" early in in the Gospels, he was reaching out basically to those who had little access to God.

Consider; Father knew that both Naaman and the Widow would be an example/testimony to those around them. Surely when Naaman went back to his home town they would see he was healed and the Widows son and family would know she had plenty to eat. Father knows our mind and heart. I don't believe that's an excuse to sin. However, I believe love covers a multitude of sin.

I thought Mormons believe in a different Jesus. So it doesn’t matter if he looks in anyone’s eyes and says he believes that Jesus died for his sins. What matters 1st is what Jesus? You have to believe in the right Jesus. In that case, the Jehovah witnesses believe that Jesus is a created been and the brother of Gabriel the Archangel. I thought Jesus was the creator of all things, not someone that was created. So how can this Mormon be saved just because he looks into someone’s eye and says he believes Jesus died for his sin? What Jesus? Can someone please clear this up for me? I mean I would love for him to be saved, but if he isn’t, wouldn’t it be better to tell him the truth?

1# "What is your take on the Pergamon Temple Museum in Berlin Germany, thus it has a spiritual implication on the the country *Cosmogeography* compares to what Naaman did in the Book of Kings ?" .
2# Does the "watchers still have power over the nations YHWH gave to them? having Daniel's story in the Book of Daniel and the Books of Revelations in mind.
Thank you and may YHWH continue to bless you with wisdom.

  • @TrondHanshus

As someone who has listened to several messages by dr. Heiser and respected him I have to say that I was quite disappointed by this message. To equate the salvation of two Gentile people in the O.T who experienced the true God with a man living in the sin of adultery and a Cultist is quite a crazy comparison. Sure, salvation doesn’t come through moral or doctrinal perfection but through faith in Christ, but it’s definitely not as though “anything goes as long as you can say you trust in Christ alone for salvation”! “Saved by grace through faith” doesn’t mean that we can live, believe or teach what we want as long as we can say we trust in Christ.
Jesus says: “unless you believe that I am, you will die in your sins.” (Joh. 8:24.) Surely based on this Scripture alone we are not saved by any “Jesus” but only the true Jesus. That’s why Paul warns about “another Jesus” in 2. Cor. 11. Only the true Jesus Christ can save, not the “Jesus” of Mormonism, JW or other cults and religions. There is a reason why cults like Mormonism, JW etc. has historically been deemed “cults” and not regarded as Biblical Christianity by the Church.
Sure, we have to take into account the differing degrees of spiritual maturity and doctrinal understanding among people, but when faced with basic and essential Biblical teaching a truly saved and informed Christian will not go on to deny fundamental Biblical doctrine!
    In Christ, Trond

He had faith to leave and go to Israel, and see this prophet of Israel's God, then do what he told him to do. He was trusting this God of Israel to heal him. Since we have these promises, beloved, let us cleanse ourselves from every defilement of body and spirit, bringing holiness to completion in the fear of God.
    2 Corinthians 7:1 ESV
And everyone who thus hopes in him purifies himself as he is pure.
    1 John 3:3 ESV
So, Naaman's believe that there is NO OTHER GOD besides YAHWEH, immediately produced acts of righteousness, and his idol worshiping master would have asked Naaman how did he get healed?!
Therefore Naaman, after his conversion as believer in YAHWEH will bear fruit of righteousness!
    (Idols condemned in Naaman's case)
In the widow's story, her confession to Elijah: "As sure as you Elohim lives" was enough for YAHWEH to act and with foreknowledge of widows' faith and send Elijah to her!!!
Her act of faith was confirmed by her actions!
And all her household reaped fruits if her faith, praising YAH and imitating faith of the widow!
In Naaman's case, he believed when he listened to the slave girl!
His trip was an act of faith that got rewarded in healing.
Therefore, all who believe in YAHSHUA dying for our sins, also purifies himself from all unrighteousness, that contaminates the bodily temple of the Holy Spirit!
    Amen.

Rest in peace M. Heiser. I think if that Mormon man remains a Mormon while holding that true gospel faith, he's "serving two masters." The reason the Mormon Church exists at all, is because Joseph Smith claimed to have been given supernatural instruction that the death of Jesus on the cross wasn't enough. That Mr. Heiser seems unaware or unconcerned about the PRACTICES of that Mormon man such as Temple Rites for baptisms for the dead,m and pledging uomost faithful fidelity to the word of their Living Prophet is troubling.

  • @SeforaNelson
    @SeforaNelson 5 років тому +8

I have several, at least 6 of his books, and thank God for some of the truths that God has used him to reveal. But this sermon is disturbing, as I feel that several theological concepts are being mixed together, thereby leading many people in error. Let me state up front that none of us will ever make it into heaven because we perfectly obeyed the Word of God; yes, it is all by the grace of God. Heiser is mixing up 'beginning' salvation and sanctification. The Bible is clear that mere 'belief' is not enough for salvation! "Even the demons belief and tremble (James 2:9). We must add to our faith/belief (2 Pet. 1:5-9). Even in the Old Testament, there was no sacrifice for wilful sinning. We are called to obey and do the Word of God.
Is Heiser also saying that all people who were healed by Jesus, automatically had been saved? Even those who believed in Jesus for their healing, were they saved? Can Naaman be used as an example for salvation? And we know that in the past God 'winked' at their transgressions, not holding it against them. You do not need to know a lot in order to be saved, but after having accepted salvation in Christ through faith alone, as you grow in Christ and receive more knowledge, you are expected to live out that 'loyalty' by obeying and doing the truth.
I am sorry, but this kind of seemingly empty confession of Christ that Heiser appears to be peddling here is dangerous and deceptive. His sermon would have been more productive if he had compared Naaman's decision to continue worshipping at pagan temple to that of Daniel's or the other three Hebrew boys who refused to bow. They could have bowed outwardly, but remained standing in their hearts?
Honestly, Heiser chickened out in his reply to the Mormon. Mormon belief is in no way compatible with the Truth of the Bible!
Brothers and sisters, I know that you find comfort in shepherds who would lull you to sleep in disobeying the Bible, but resist! Do what you know to be true, what you have seen in the Bible and what the Holy Spirit convicts you of in your heart. Knowledge of the Divine Council is helpful to know, but will not you sinning. Judas also believed, and look what his end was. Our ultimate example of the Christian life is Jesus and what He taught, not any Old Testament saint. Yes, we can glean particular truths about God's plan from their lives and helpful principles, but look to Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith.
Let us keep the unity of the faith.

I agree completely. I am so disappointed by this sermon. Everyone does not have to understand the Bible exactly the same way, but there is such a thing as heresy. What does Heiser think heresy means based on this sermon? There are so many ex Mormons who talk about being terribly lost, thinking they were believers in Jesus, so thankful the Lord brought them out because now they are saved! What help was he to that man? He just let him feel good about being a Mormon. So sad. Heiser has some great insight into how to understand the Old Testament, but he is all wrong on this.

Judas did not believe that Jesus was the Son of God. He never had believed.
The demons were not offered salvation. They know there is one God. The culture at that time was worshipping many gods.
Heresy is denying that Jesus was the Son of God and that he is the only perfect and sinless one who can forgive sins and offer us the gift of salvation. His sacrifice was accepted by God. The Pharisees refused to believe he was God and they committed blasphemy by attributing the miracles he did to Satan. They saw with their own eyes, yet they refused to believe in him.
Heiser had talked with this particular Mormon - his looking him in the eye, and asking him if he believed - wasn't just a passing comment - the man knew what Heiser meant by believing in Christ alone for salvation - and from his response to Heiser he understood - he replied he wasn't sure ... he wasn't ready and that is all Heiser could do. He planted a huge seed and he let him go ... Just as Jesus let the rich young man go his way. He didn't run after him and say, come on it's okay or force him to say something that he did not believe ... He loved him. We are so quick to judge.
As someone said elsewhere in these comments - they were only held accountable for the revelation that they had ... As we see with Rahab, a prostitute, who helped the two spies because she had heard of this God of Israel and she believed in this God.
The point being made was their belief in God ... Not what they did or didn't do. We have the Holy Spirit indwelling in us to grow in the grace and knowledge of Christ since Pentecost ... not to bang us over the head and force us to walk in a certain way and demand obedience ... What you are talking about is not salvation but the process of sanctification - which is how we should be ... But, we are fallen sin-filled flesh, that is contrary to the will of God, and the flesh and the Spirit war against each other, just as the Apostle Paul cried out who will deliver me from this body of sin ... He sinned and he couldn't stop sinning ... It is time we look through eyes of mercy and grace and stop throwing daggers out to maim and wound ... demanding perfection which is impossible to obtain. Another gospel is saying, but ... do this, don't do that ... for salvation or in keeping salvation. It is Christ who saves us and it is He who keeps us because he is the author and finisher of our faith, and this is not of ourselves so they no man can boast.

Then you need to explain WHY Jesus mentioned Naaman and the Widow to all those UNBELIEVING self righteous people??? Your righteousness is about as good as dirt to a thrice holy God. It's his imputed righteousness on us that counts, and boy, he imputed it on Naaman and the Widow. Jesus mentioned them BY NAME for a reason. Take your issue up with Jesus, not Mike for bringing light to a passage that many of us forget.

Namaan, was in no sense obligated to adhere to the Torah given at Sinai. He(Namaan)was faithful with the light (revelation) that was given to him and was faithful to that revelation no matter how great or small it may be. Israelites made a covenant with God of which their faith/belief is expressed and mingled with the Torah/commandments. So I disagree with Heiser here when he states that merely believing like Namaan would have been sufficient for the Israelite.

And Naamans time was also pre Jesus ascending to the father and the outpouring of his Holy spirit which leads us into all truth and allows us to put these truths by our faith in Jesus into action by our works. Because faith without works is dead!! The Old Testament is good for a shadow a type it is not the end-all be-all as Heiser making it. Be watchful because A little leaven ruins the whole lump.

You're not reading this in context if you think Abraham had the law of Moses. Abraham is before Moses in the time line. The commands mentioned in the verse that you cited refers to any command the the Lord gave to Abraham by special/direct revelation. There isn't anywhere in Genesis that says that God gave Abraham the the ten commandments or the Torah, because those laws were given to Moses later on in the timeline.

    • @Mr_A1-37
      @Mr_A1-37 4 роки тому

Also, Torah/Law is not an exclusive term for the Sinai Covenant (Law given to Moses). Assuming such will lead to various exegetical errors. Torah is best understood as the function or expression of the underlying Covenant. Therefore if the Covenant changes then our faithful expression(Torah) necessarily must change. In keeping this understanding, those of us under the New Covenant are therefore Torah observant but under the Law(Torah ) of Messiah.

The apostles and disciples were murdered for their belief that Jesus was God in human flesh. Mormons and Jehovah’s Witnesses do not believe Jesus is God. Yet they would say they worship YHWH or Jehovah if you asked them. It sounds like they will be in heaven too according to Dr. Heiser.

Well! This was a roller coaster ride!
At first I was like wow! Until half way through...then I saw where you were going...and I held my breath...and I thought wait a minute...
Romans 5 was written to "Born Again" believers...they were baptised in water and with the Holy Spirit..
Jesus specifically said in John 3: 5 that "no man can enter the Kingdom of Heaven unless he is born of water and spirit."
So we can't use the Romans 5 " having been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ" to cover everybody who believes...but is not "born again"...that don't fit well with me...
And I don't believe using the Old Testament to justify that all are covered by faith alone is ok...It was the Old Covenant for one...Jesus hadn't died yet...We live in the New Covenant where, yes Jesus died while we were still in our sins but we are not to continue sinning...(Romans 6)
    Something to reflect on....

    • @cathi7610

The truth has nothing to do with what they did - it is who they had believed in. Abraham believed and it was accounted to him as righteousness before he was willing to slay Isaac and before the law came through Moses. The gospel of grace that the Apostle Paul preached was grace alone through faith alone in Christ alone.
The Matthew 7:21-23 crowd who prided themselves on all the good things they did for God were not believers. They, afterall, had trusted in their own good works and prided themselves in doing so. They did not believe in the finished work on the cross that Christ did for them. God isn't looking at what we do in our entering Heaven ... All our righteousness is as filthy rags in his eyes - He will look at us and see the blood of Christ over us because we have believed in His son. We have his righteousness imputed to us through faith in him. It is the gift of God which is eternal life. As the thief on the cross came to realize and believe in who this man really was - and Jesus said today you will be in paradise with me ... He knew he was a sinner ... not as one of those in the crowd who snickered at Jesus as they walked by, thinking they were of the righteous.

@Jasmine Johnson Ask a former Mormon who has become a Bible believing Christian if they were saved when they were a Mormon. The answer will be, "No." Mormon theology uses the same names: Jesus, God the Father, Moses, etc, but they are not the same people as the ones in the Bible. Imagine you ask someone if they know Jesus and they tell you, "Yeah, Mexican guy, 20 years old, does landscaping, mom's name is Maria." In this hypothetical situation, someone knows a "Jesus," but not THE Jesus. This is the case with Mormonism. It is noteworthy that Mormon scripture declares its faithful are to be called, "Latter Day Saints," because the tenants of Mormonism are the REAL truth and should be considered DISTINCT from Christianity. Let that sink in. Neither of the men in this sermon understood what they were talking about.

Your conclusion seems contradictory to bible examples.
Both widow & Naaman obeyed the word of God.
Both continued their in, but the Israelites, unlike our 2 ex., exile was their reward because of their disbelief(disobedience) & they were carried away. (No baal worshipers in heaven)
So if some1 Knows what they're doing is sinful yet continues in their sin; "for if we sin wilfully after that we have received the knowledge of the truth, their remaineth no more sacrifice for sin,".
If the blood of Jesus no more cleanses you, after it once did, " Of how much sorer punishment, suppose ye, shall he be thought worthy, who hath trodden under foot the Son of God, and hath counted the blood of the covenant, wherewith he was sanctified, an unholy thing, and hath done despite unto the Spirit of grace?"
    Fiery indignation that shall devour...
As so with Gods own people He cast off who left Him, so now, those who know Him & obey Him not..
    Obedience is KEY

He lived in the days of the pre-incarnate Christ ... Your comparison with the New Covenant after Christ's death, burial and resurrection is not accurate. It isn't that we 'must' now do this or that - it is that we 'should' do this or that ... The Holy Spirit doesn't force anything on us ... We have free will and we still have our flesh (sin-filled nature that will only sin) which is why our flesh will war against the Spirit. The grace and mercy of God - is the man who pounded his chest and raised his voice to God saying help me, a sinner. Not the self-righteous, pride-filled judgemental Pharisee.

@@cathi7610 - thanks for your reply. We have a free will I agree and even before the incarnate Christ, grace and faith still existed. We only have to look at Abraham who lived by faith to know that a life of being led by His Spirit didn’t just happen in the time after Christ .. what is different is a better Covenant now in Christ..I’m not sure we both are saying anything different, but I do know that what is not of faith is sin and therefore not of the Spirit. 🙂 worshipping any other than Christ clearly is not of the Spirit new or old testament.
