After Chuck Missler passed I did not think I would find another teacher to satisfy my need for deep and somewhat weird teaching. Mike has taken it to a new level. He has filled many of the questions I had been left with. I went to every Missler Conference except the one in 2015. Must have been the one I missed Heiser at.

I have no idea how long I've been listening to Dr. Heiser. Maybe a decade. I've been Christian for 40 years, being drawn out of my atheist upbringing. When I opened my first study Bible to "study ", my prayer was for God to extract all the junk teachings from my head, and fill me with His truth. I was desperate to know Him. In Mike Heiser, that prayer is being brought to completion. Usually I have no problem making a paradigm shift in my thinking, and when I can't do that, I'm also comfortable in disagreeing with Him. That's so rare, I consider him to be -one of- the most qualified general Bible teacher I've ever listened to, so thanks for bringing these videos to my attention, many of which I haven't yet heard.
    I LOVE this guy!!!

Thank You Dr. Heiser! You are always a breath of fresh air. I was raised in an anti Christian family, then as a young adult I got saved by Jesus in spite of Christian’s I observed. I was reading the Bible just to know what it said, I didn’t understand a lot f what it said so I would ask religious people. They we’re not helpful. And it scared me that I was coming to believe In Jesus and thought I was losing my mind since the Christians I knew didn’t even read the Bible let alone could even answer the simplest questions. My salvation was an act of Jesus. Saved over 40years now. I’m humbled by Jesus in spite of the world around me.

It's so amazing how so many of the problem passages for me in scripture were settled through Mike's teaching. God's using him in really great ways. Id say that Mike uses contrastive thinking vs comparative thinking. Comparative thinking seems to be our default. It takes work and intentionality to question and examine other possibilities.

  • @gusmancuso8191

So much of this is the same thinking process we learn in the Army as Infantry Officers. First question, what is the problem? Is there even a problem, or just a situation? What are the FACTS bearing upon this problem? What assumptions must be made to think through the problem (there are never enough facts)? Reason through at least three plausible options. Plan, using the assumptions (in case they are later proven wrong), for alternate courses of action. I studied contract interpretation. These thinking principles that Dr. Heiser is discussing are so necessary. Bottom line, if someone gives me an "either/or" proposition I automatically reject the premise. Basic logic. Why would our Creator make us with this ability to reason then instruct us to act like dumb animals? How does thinking and asking questions challenge the simple faith in Jesus? It does not.

I got saved at age 20 and from then on I have been searching for someone, anyone with whom I could relate. I can relate to you in ways that I have never known. Such a great topic! I know God wants us to mature and show ourselves workers approved, rightly handling the word, moving on from milk to solid foods etc ...but we should also be weary of becoming puffed up on knowledge or sliding into legalism and becoming crusty and religious. We should strive to worship God in spirit and in truth right? Brains and heart? Balanced. That's a fascinating struggle for me daily. To continue to believe as a child but grow and mature in the faith. My approach is to simply strive to ....
    1. Read the Bible every day.
    2. Pray everyday
    3. Fellowship with other believers
Love and peace in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Thank you Michael, wonderful teacher. Left Jehovah's Witness 29 years ago, but I never knew the bible. I like the Whole creativity aspect and you allow yourself and others to be critical thinkers. There's a lot of sheep without shepherd's. I walked away from religion for many years because you couldn't ask questions and get decent answers. What brought me back to the bible was an unseen realm UA-cam video and then more of your ideas, but you're not afraid of questions. You're Not and I mean Not allowed to question JW'S doctrine for fear of expulsion or excommunication. That's when I was done with them, because your Salvation depends upon you knowing knowledge of the bible. Question were common back in bible times. What are they afraid of? I know now it's fear of learning about there history and past things they don't want you to know. Instead of saying we were wrong they blame the followers, that's not a good shepherd. I found they're false prophets that the bible warns us about. There's a lot you need to question. Especially there involvement in vesting in companies they'd excommunicate you for investing in. These things woke me up. And I'm grateful because now I'm getting real meat and not spoon feed milk. They want you so dependent on them for everything. Very high control group. Which is high indicator of cult. They're history starts with Adventist church. They're great for proselytizing, but that all for the elites benefit not for Jesus Christ. They make huge gains off free labor, unskilled workers so they keep them dumb down and uneducated for a reason. You're not allowed to go to college or University? Why? Because you'll become a critical thinkers and that's dangerous. I went to college and I'm still taking college classes. Don't ever let someone tell you knowledge is dangerous for your faith it's not. You can be educated and still love God.

I, too, was initially concerned about your challenges to what is popular, pervasive and "orthodox," having been a preacher, myself, for years (two seminaries, Bible institutes and Reformed in my position). Also, I have shelves of "sound" books and many magazines. Dr.Heiser, you have,[additionally] prompted me to apply the questions that are birth from "observation" of a text. To conclude, many of ours Christian teachers, professors and pastors are afraid that deviation from what's generally acceptable, even in orthodox institutions, will cause them to lose their jobs! II Tim.2.15 is not most important. I am, also, mindful that I am speaking before an audience of two: people and God, when I teach (II Cor.4.2).

Even before I found Heiser, it was clear there where translation errors, and some things I could not understand because I did not knew enough about the time and what those people did/knew and how they seen it. I am into History all my life so I never had that problem not seeing the Bible in the content of that time it was written. You can not be into History, if you can not think yourself into the way how those people, at the time, where living, the knowledge and world view they had. How and what they lived by. I always bumbed heads with others, because I seen it the way it was written. And I refused to twist and turn it, so it fits our Lifestyle today. There is no need for it anyways.

Well Michael doesn’t seem as bogged down in tradition, probably cuz he wasn’t raised in a Christian household. What may have been a negative back then has shown to be a huge asset now. Also... and some may be offended BUT...I guess across all of society too...there are so many emotionally wounded & needy individuals in Church many of whom were raised In The Church. Don’t ask us to think, we just want to know what to believe & hopefully have a Church “dad” ( pastor) that can calm our deep seeded fears & a place that makes us feel welcome & maybe even loved.
It’s a shame cuz those are the people so easily picked off cuz they can’t defend their faith, even to themselves, when challenged.

Many has been done to the Divine WORD and those who has knows exactly what they did! That is why a lot can be said and undermining The WORD of God and it is not like He did not know what was going to take place! As He had said I have set life and death before you, then He said choose life! But why attack those He had appointed to give us His commandments? Do we think that we know better?! Only God knows our motives and by definition we are judged by our own words! That is why I choose to follow what has been given and not to think higher than what is or has been given or revealed.

So much good here; but there has to be one source for Christian hermenuetics which should be: Jesus and the writers of his words and life (the Bible). This is the Greek Orthodox Church and the other related traditions (Slavic, Ethiopian, Egyptian, et al) They all agree in theology and practice- for the last 2000 years. It is a worthwhile quest to research this for Western Christians.

Vary good, unless you can take into account God's perspective, being outside the arrow of time, you can easily mistaken scriptural meaning in some of Pauline writing. Hence we have the doctrine of cheap grace going around, which is not new at all, it's been around from the beginning.

"either/or fallacious thinking". I've seen for years that people are extremists. They almost always assume that a position has to be one extreme or the other, when actually it's often neither or both.
Example: the old fallacious question, "Is the glass half empty or half full?"
It's an idiotic question. The answer obviously has to be "both". How can you have a glass that's half empty WITHOUT it being half full?
    Answer: you can't.
And yes, I know this is a metaphor for the outlook people have on life. But that's the point: life is made up of BOTH GOOD AND BAD. Yet somehow if you even acknowledge the presence of the bad in life in Christian circles you're hit over the head by people who can't wait to tell you that you need to repent and get your Joel Osteen on (not throwing any hate at Osteen here either, just don't think most will have heard of Norman Vincent Peale).
I've been a believer for over 40 years and I've yet to find much in life God addresses for you if you don't acknowledge it first. My God is big enough to handle bad things, so I don't have to be afraid to even acknowledge the existence of bad things. In fact, one of the greatest blessings in my life is seeing what He does with a bad thing once I give it to Him!

I agree!!! I want the truth.
I also don't have a Shepard, but I do have a preacher in my church. A good example of this is that everything involving inspiration has by God to a person, which underneath they don't even believe it only has to be God talking to the person and don't realize it. One example of this was the discussion in class about Matthew 16:17, where Jesus said that the Father revealed unto Peter that He was the Christ. I told them that this probably came about from Peter seeing the things around him that both the Father and Jesus did, which brought him to the conclusion that Jesus was the Christ. They even went to the point that Peter was inspired by God through prophecy, and why only Peter and not the rest of the apostles were not inspired by the Father as Peter was. I think I have the answer, and I think the answer is normally simpler and more often interesting than the traditional way of thinking.
I want to know God, and it fascinates me as to how well I understand the God over people who spend a lot more time than I do READING the Bible.

He was pointing out the extremes. He was quite clear as to what he meant by "fundamentalist" - that both extremes are essentially fundamentalist. Not all people who consider themselves Calvinists are extreme fundamentalist. He's taking about people being stuck in a framework of thinking, and being unwilling to use multiple frameworks.
If that's all you've taken away from what he's said then you've missed the point. And potentially you're missing out on what Calvinists can offer that is useful.
