Counter intuitive doesn't mean too much tech, it just means confusing. IMO Volvo misses the mark with this car. 92k (Canadian) for a car that makes you work for features other cars simplify in this segment?

Not too much technology, just poor UX. Hard to learn and I would worry about the breakage after the warranty is done. Lease it.

I like it when things have a learning curve. Exploring is fun, as we saw at the end of the video. If it's all plain and simple then it gets boring quickly. Like appliances.

I finished watching the trip meter reset bit at the end and thought to myself that this might have been one of the best car reviews I've eve seen. You both liked/disliked things to a good ratio, video was a perfect length, didn't labor on any topics and it left a smile on my face at the end. I've watched millions of these videos, this was a gem. Cheers.

The S90 really competes with the E-Class, 5 series, A6, GS, and CTS. All of those have a four cylinder base, and if it did compete in the full size segment, the BMW 740e iPerformance has a 4 cylinder and a hybrid motor. The S-class also has a 4 cylinder in other markets.

I traded in my 2015 V60 for the T8 and think you guys are spot on about the initial lack of intuitiveness. That being said, after a few weeks with the car everything is second nature. I love Pure electric mode and Power mode is plenty quick for me, but Hybrid mode is a bit uninspiring. For day to day driving the car is wonderful, but if you want to properly compare the S90 to the A6, 5 Series, E class, etc you really need to drive it in Power mode. Case in point - our 2013 A6 3.0T blows away the engine feel of Hybrid mode, but put the S90 in Power and it's a much closer comparison.
The MSRP is a bit high given where Volvo sits on the brand totem pole (though I'd argue there is real value relative to the competition looking at standard features, fit and finish and safety), but if you look at real world pricing and some of the crazy lease incentives they have here in the US it doesn't look nearly as bad.
You guys also nailed the buyer - I'm an Android guy and love technology. Add to that someone who generally prefers the underdog brands over the mainstream and I think you've described me.

@@AL-to4ro The only downside of the 2018 was a slow Sensus interface. They upgraded the chip in either 2019 or 2020 (not sure which), and that made the infotainment interface much zippier/responsive.

The Volvo Sensus is incredibly easy. You swipe to driver side for all ON/OFF switches that used to litter the cabin and you swipe to passenger side for all APPs related stuffs (Radio, Bluetooth, eco meters etc)
Volvo doesnt group functions together as these new cars have so many of them it's impossible to group them.
Once you understand the logic its so easy. Anything you wanna turn on and off will always be on the menu that's towards the driver side (in RHD countries it's on the right, LHD countries on the left)

    • @kamino78

The s90 now is delivered only in the "L" version, though without adding the L to the nomenclature. (The 2017 was standard length) So space-wise you'd want to compare "long" or "limousine" cars, whether E, A6 or 5 Series. I guess that's why TSP opted to compare it to the S. To be a fairer comparison, maybe you'd have to call in the S90 "Excellence", which seems to be positioned as a true limousine a la Maybach (though, based on the S90, it must be smaller), and isn't yet sent to NOrth America.

The only constructive criticism I have for you guys is that the complexity or counterintuitiveness that you're pointing out most of this video, probably won't be an issue after a week for those who actually buy the car. You are reviewing the car more as journalists, rather than a potential buyer. I understand that you guys are reviewing the car and pointing out your gripes, but it isn't necessarily a negative thing if there are features or quirks that differentiate or stray from the norm, which therefore takes more time than other cars to learn. Even though it might not always be perfect, I applaud Volvo for trying to evolve and do things differently. That is why we love cars.
I'm only telling you guys this because I like your channel!

Further... you can rearrange the buttons so those that you do use most often are near the top... so scrolling would only be for rarely used features (like turning off road sign information).

    2) Seems like with all the engines and electricity, if something breaks, it's gong to suck to fix so... lease it?
    3) How does it smell? Is the new car smell good?
    4) the rear window is oddly shaped, like a pentagonish?
    5) ya'll should start doing a hockey bag and stick test. how many bags and sticks can you fit?
    6) $72,000 USD ... you could buy 2 stingers or 1 Raptor, eh?

It’s a bit strange that the bizarre tech quirks of this car is limited to this car and don’t trickle too much into other Volvo products.
Whoever designed the tech in that car has an extremely complicated mind. It’s like they designed that trip menu thing and then just before launching the car somebody pointed out there isn’t actually a way to reset it and the boss was like ahh well we’ll just put a button on one of the stalks or something.
I’d never personally buy a car like that but I have to say it looks quite alright, besides its bizarre quirks it’s not too shabby.
Great review guys, keep up the awesome work.

Volvo seems to be doing awesome things with visual design (interior, exterior, infotainment) and really dumb things with actual user experience like you guys are pointing out. If they made this same interior but with a more traditional shifter, infotainment usage, climate controls, etc then it would be on par with the German luxury titans IMO. The new V60 looks amazing and it's a shame knowing it will probably have all these same mistakes

The s90 starts in the US at $48,100 (Momentum) and goes up to about $77,000 as shown in the review (Inscription with added packages). Subtract $10K if you don't want the hybrid. Subtract another $3200 if you can live with the standard 224W, 10-speaker stereo rather than the Bowers and Wilkins. Also $800 for the 20" wheels over the 19" - could the 20s be part of the reason the ride felt hard? That gets you down to $63K US for the Inscription with plenty of extras.

  • @hhanonymous

Was really looking forward to how the S90/V90 would be but there's way too many head scratching design decisions on the car that doesn't really justify its price. I'm wondering if the polestar variants are stuck with those too or if they're altered in anyway.

    • @hhanonymous
      @hhanonymous 6 років тому +1

What about the reviewers was confusing? So you honestly think the layout of how to reset the trip meter was straight forward? Going through a dash menu then hitting a button on a stalk? That's not innovative, that's just dumbfounding. And that's the tip of the iceberg in the decisions made with this car. I honestly feel like if you're spending 100K CAD on a car like this, I'd rather get my money's worth on a car that has a smoother ride suspension and less finicky infotainment interface.

I own a 2017 s90 t6 inscription and the audio system is probably the best factory system I've ever heard and sure it takes some time to get used to but once u do it becomes easy . Now I've got a 2017 same motor 2.0 super and turbo which operates flawlessly . The one thing that's annoying is going to the carwash because the wheels when u drive into the docking place entering the wheels get scratched even when ur dead on with lining the car up. The best thing is the looks. Now the 17 is a shorter wheelbase by I believe 5 inches and imo looks better . Personally I've owned at least 25+ vehicles in my life and the s90 is overall the best one

As a tech at Volvo, the petrol engines in their entirety have been very sweet and no major, and very very few reliability issues to report. The diesels are another matter entirely. To put it more into perspective, our dealer hasn't yet had any kind of of severe issues with the petrol engines, the most I personally have done on one of these is fix an oil leak from the front main seal. The diesels, have rebuilt several cylinder heads, replaced a couple complete blocks, regular EGR issues, and really bad oil leak issues.
