It is so amazing that the band were able to create a vibe that is somewhat atmospheric and effortlessly chaotic and calculated in Camels. I never thought it could sound so good live.
im an recording engineer & i agree with you, but the pickup is much more practical. last time he came through town he ended up using my buds twin reverb & the guitar sounded perty dang good actually.
@@joshuabloodsworth9495 yeah they sound better when plugged to a tube amp, but in this session it's going directly into the mixer, and that's why it sounds a bit plastic. Nevertheless, if they had mic'ed the guitar they would've had a lot of bleeding from the other instruments, so it's actually the best thing to do in this scenario.
Eagle is lovely, and Dream River is almost a companion album. For me, the two albums that are Must Have from his days performing as Smog are Knock Knock and A River Ain't Too Much to Love. His music is its own world, really. Cheers!
i really like how touched & invested Cheryl is with the dialogue between her & Bill during this session. its not something you see very often of her & KEXP, theres something very genuine & mature about the whole exchange.
Wow this is superb. If i may throw in a reference Bill Callahan sounds very much like Tim Hardin, a touch of Lou Reed and plenty of soulful feeling. Great stuff.
Take some Lee Hazlewood, throw in a pinch of Cormac McCarthy, maybe a bit of Townes and even a subtle benediction from the spirit of Nick Drake, and someone resembling Bill Callahan starts to take shape...
I feel it must be hard to play alongside Callahan. The way that he times his vocal delivery and the way he paces his songs is so strange and individual. In some ways I'd always rather just be watching him and his guitar, solo. No offence intended!
Every time I listen to Bill is wow. It makes me feel so much calm and takes away anxiety.
Cheryl: "that was sooo great, oh what a good way to start the morning"
Bill: "for you, maybe"
Hahahaha
AHAHAHAH Genius
Genuine guy, genuine musical genius, and that voice...
Musical genius 😂 good one 👍
Cheryl Waters = only person who can get Bill Callahan to talk. Barely. Great interview. Great performance

It is as good as it gets songwriting wise. Legend.
Thank cousin bill and Janet....how I miss you......I loved you all so much .....so did Bobby

Never clicked so fast, and with Cheryl as a host!
Guy I was in a band with played me a smog tape back in the early 2000s,warping me permanently
The panic room is now a nursery. What a line.
BILL + CHERYL + KEXP = the holy trinity!
i feel like bill callahan songs should always come with subtitles.. such strong lyrics

One of my favorite albums from the past five years. Ballad of the Hulk is pretty incredible.
The tone on that acoustic is amazing
uhm I disagree, direct in acoustics always sound kinda plastic
@@carlosmpizzi its a nylon, thats legitimately what they sound like.
@@joshuabloodsworth9495 yeah but I mean, it's plugged in. A nylon sounds much better when recorded with a mic in front

Incredible beautiful session by an incredible strong songwriter, and the album is the best from him yet. Just love it!
Such tender humanity and poignant songwriting! Maybe better than ever.
love his music
This guy has an amazing voice and lyrics
Still the best living songwriter for me.
Him and Bonnie will
Yes, he's better than Joni Mitchell and Bob Dylan. Sheesh. At least Prince and Leonard Cohen are dead.

Nylon string spanish guitar. Amazing sound.
I now know who he reminds me of. The phrasing, the lyricism, the instrumentation. Nick Drake. With a Tom Rush chaser.
I used to confuse their music all the time (Drake and Callahan)
For sure, he sings like Nick Drake minus an octave
Im reminded of Tim Hardin, but yes as a lover of everything Nick Drake the quality is all there.
yes yes yes! Totally makes me think of Nick Drake.
For sure, Nick Drake is not so far, still Alive 🙏🙏🙏❤️❤️❤️✨💫
Amazing...meditative and serene and deep...
so excited that we are going to see him here in 2 days!
beautiful performance ! beautiful lyricism
I love his music so much! 💗💗

So beautiful! Thanks KEXP, thanks Bill!
Just got into Bill’s music tonight!
Sometimes I Wish I Were An Eagle was my entry into his world... check it out and welcome!

I love his charming awkwardness..wonderful really.
like Elliott Smith ?
Saw Bill live in Cologne in 2012 and he hasn't changed a bit.
What kind of monster gives a thumbs down to this man?
they're 4 now
probably they're some of the Hulk enemies
Just someone who doesn't it that's all. It's ok for people not to like everything.
Yeah, if you don’t it, you just don’t it.
Who knows ....they are stupid idiots..... he's my cousin.....
thank you bill

Genius.
You guys should totally bring in Wintergatan! Coolest music out there.
Erik Dahl Yes please
Yes!
this guy just got a huge boost from the GUARD DOG
yeah!
il suo sorriso a 3:58, mi fa bene come la sua voce
I like that camels song it sounds like some old Neil Young
World is turnin, hope it dont turn away
In a way, Bill reminds me of Nick Drake's singing. That's a compliment.
pure genius the same way Lou Reed was
Damn, who is the guy on the SG? His playing is tasteful as hell
i think it's Matt Kinsey
Yep, Matt Kinsey. He gives us the names of his band at 11:28
Kind of sounds like a mix between Kevin Ayers and Lou Reed. Very nice.
Lou Reed loved Bill Callahan
Magical piper...
It seems like Bill has seen some shit go down?
He reminds me a bit of Mark lenagen I really like it
does anyone know what shirt the drummer is weain
Was hoping will woulda been picking along, too, but no one does it like smog,
No one
That Smog song Dirty Pants rules !
Dead Mans Shoes Part 2 soundtrack... I wish!
Typically awkward BC interview
Sounds a bit like Gil Scott-Heron, nice.
nice of John c Reilly to play guitar for him
What album is on the drummers shirt?
Those old Bill Bixby days

No disrespect towards Mr. Callahan but I recommend you adjust the playback speed to 1.5 whenever he speaks... it gives it a better flow.
Voz dolorosa... :(

The musicians are really good too.
I can't remember who turned me on to him and it's driving me crazy ...
He sounds like Nike Drake
Howe Gelb
Deeee-e-E-ecent!!!
Really pisses me off they cant add the names of the band but they can for the camera operators. Like anyone here gives two shits about the cameras.
I married a woman who was not my wife
Jhonny Cash hahaha
All the young dumb bands that come on this show should be forced to watch this performance.
Is this guy learning to piece words together for the first time in this interview ? Painful
