My good friend introduced me to Smog at 15, maybe 16. We would play music as his dad drank wine and remodeled their old school house/home. I was full of angst then. And I would daze out to this music, and didn't really understand it completely. I avoided the chance of being depressed. But it has always echoed on. I've come to really love Bills music, and its building. I've only found that in Waits, Cohen, and few others. But only Bills music has played such a part in my life. I'm 27 now. Looking in the rear view mirror, and keeping one eye busy and distracted on the road forward.
I cry with chills, scared and proud. It tears me.
But I remind myself of the old days before us. I think of the wilderness, and the smile on a child's face, and my mother with happy tears, and my father singing baritone in his bath robe, and the idea of being a real man. A rock.
The perspective Bill gives me, puts me on top, and helps me see the beauty of life.

Agreed. I might add Nick Drake to your list. But yes, a very small terrific list it is. And I discovered him last December. At 61.

@@DateTwoRelate Love Callahan, Waits, Cohen, and Nick Drake. As far as Callahan's contemporaries, Will Oldham and David Berman are at the same level.

He's a solid three-phased guy. The old stuff that was just hardcore LO-FI, then the mid stuff like Knock Knock and Red Apple Falls where he's finding more melody, then Bill Callahan he's done with all the nutty girlfriends and finding solid ground in his life and the music reflects this.
