@@marcusajoyce And as he should be. Hugh wrote a lot of their hots. Neither JJ, Jet, or Baz could write a decent song to save their lives. And that's why The Stranglers is like KISS: A tribute band of themselves.
I my view despite the absence of Hugh Cornwell and his undoubted charisma The Stranglers are still a very effective relevant band !And I think that the addition of Baz Warne in terms of what he brings musically has been considerable !! From Adrian Browne
1:50 _"The Strangers has never really been a static institution"_ Sorry Jet, but you're wrong. From the point of view of those who followed you and your band, for twenty+ years, from the mid-70's to 1990, You, Hugh, JJ and Dave *were* the Stranglers. I mean, I give 100% credit to those who came along to fill those empty shoes, but to a huge chunk of your fanbase, there was only one true line-up, and it had Hugh out in front.
The band were saved when they returned to being a four piece again. Hugh talks about volatility of the people in the band, that certainly wasn't reflected in the lame music they were making in the late 80's and the "10" album. The volatility and unpredictability was what made the Stranglers music a creative risk taking experimentation that actually worked. Volatile from 1976-1981 for sure, i don't see it afterwards. Perhaps Hugh was sick of the bad boy image and really craved artistic acceptance that The Stranglers were never going to achieve critically. The most important thing is the music has stood the test of time magnificently and Hugh should be grateful the band still exist and go out an play those songs as they should be played. It has enabled him to continue his own tribute to songs he co wrote and performed originally. Baz has been a revelation.!
I'm so glad they're a four peice again... it's so much better without paul... They're FUCKING AMAZING NOW I saw them 2 days ago and they were fucking stunning... x
celeste6445 I think I uploaded all the parts of this documentary. I know they are not the best recordings as they were transferred from an old VHS tape so some annoying noise, but worth a watch.
Just reading some of the comments: Of course everyone's entitled to their opinion and you can't really argue over taste, as everyone's different. Some will prefer Hugh, some Paul, some Baz etc......... I'm a "latter day" convert to their sound........I'd heard most of their 80's hits but didn't know much about their early period. Then I heard "Norfolk Coast" a few yrs ago and thought "What a cracking tune"......this actually led me to investigate their early records and was completely hooked. Paul was the singer on that particular song and he sounded great, whether his image, style, attitude or personality fitted the band is another question altogether. Obviously there's an element of nostalgia and sentiment with some of the older fans and it was virtually impossible to replace Hugh with anyone comparable but I think they've gone on to become one of the best bands on the planet with an incredible legacy. Hugh may be regretting his decision as I've heard he's playing very small gigs and don't think his solo career has taken off in a big way.
I think just Hugh and JJ at the forefront were much more exciting than Paul. Baz is a better replacement for Hugh than thé other two before him, but all in all , for me, The Stranglers were the best when Hugh was with them. 🖤 And RIP Dave Greenfield whose successor is damn fine too. And the bloke who stands in for Jet is top sausage as well. Long live JJ.
That singer fella was not the stranglers. I prefer Baz to him. Baz has a more punk rock feel like hugh did. Since Hugh has left he wont return and if the rest want to carry on it's their decision. Jet Black formed it and it was his choice if anyones. JJ and Dave will always be the real sound for me and Baz has brought back the energy and more Punkish sound that hugh had and Baz is equally as talented and Is the next best thing they could have had to hugh.
it's not easy being "just" a vocalist in a band but to step into the shoes of someone like Hugh Cornwell is not something i'd wish on anyone. i'm not keen on Paul's interpretation of Cornwell-era material. to me it comes off around American Idol/Britain's Got Talent territory. it isn't convincing. having said that... where do i get a pair of those boots??
Never a replacement found for Hugh in my book....He had that edge.
Baz Warne is a worthy replacement and has that early anger that Hugh did.
@@marcusajoyce Just not as handsome.
@@marcusajoyce And as he should be. Hugh wrote a lot of their hots. Neither JJ, Jet, or Baz could write a decent song to save their lives. And that's why The Stranglers is like KISS: A tribute band of themselves.
Agreed.

Where's part 2 ??
I think that remembering John Ellis when he was still in the Vibrators is a pretty good indication of old age, I'm old.

Totally agree.
Totally !
Yep, Jet was so protective of the band he was liable to talk crap now and again.
The Stranglers stopped existing in 1990 as far I’m concerned.
Where's part two
wow , JJ. Burnel playing Skin Deep sings like John Lennon .
Baz has saved this band. Hail Baz!
fuck off tosser.
🤣🤣🤣

well said that man xx
"gave the band more energy.." oh spare me!
Not remotely interested after Hugh. Where did the guy with the bare chest flailing around come from?
Once hugh left that was the end of that.shut it down.
no mate, without Hugh there aint much point is there. everyones gotta make a livin but yeah, fuck that.
I'm so glad they're a four peice again...
it's so much better without paul... They're FUCKING AMAZING NOW

JJ on the acoustic bass
Do you wanna
Wonderful to see!
Can someone tell me where I can find the second part of this documentary, please?
celeste6445 I think I uploaded all the parts of this documentary. I know they are not the best recordings as they were transferred from an old VHS tape so some annoying noise, but worth a watch.
Paul Roberts?????? Oh dear.
Does ANYONE have part 2??
Still no part 2?
Does anyone have Part 2?
Yeah! Part 2 seems to be the most interesting! Looking forward to that post :)
Paul Arvid Jorgensen yes...I’m assuming that’s the one where they will talk about Peaches, Golden Brown, Sexy Beast and Snatch
Do you have part 2
where's part 2 anyone??
The genetically formed new stranglers are still awesome
Hugh's face and expression while singing dictated the mood of the band.
No Hugh.. no Stranglers
Fuchsia Green sorry to hear your so far behind the times, Hugh only left 29 years ago FFS.
@@Bigthingcoming so true
Honestly, the gigs of the last few years were MENTAL! Multi-generational as well, so great to see.

Blimey, i'm glad they got rid of that singer
Anyone know where part 2 is?
no it's an enigma.
Once Hugh left, The Stranglers became a tribute act...I never liked Paul

Uh he isn't ok.
Roberts is absolute wank!
they should of split up when hugh quit paul was pathetic replacement
Never mind, you've got Barry now.
When Hugh left the band was done

JJ BURNEL best bass ever Finish it
They’re still the Stranglers in my book, I don’t care what any of you cnts say.
@extrastype
Ugh....Can't carry on without Hugh.....Embarrassing....
I like Paul more as a singer of The Stranglers than Baz. Not bad-mouthing. But his charisma fits more to the band.
Salam le meilleur temps des stranglers c'est Hugh le reste de merde je suis désolé
And tjere was me thing old punks died and went to heavan.
Where's part 2?
