    Wow! With apologies to the Bard himself, “Edredas, thy name is .... tenacity!” You, my friend, have the patience of a saint! I’m not sure I would have made many more trips “out there” before I would have said “Dude! Bring it into my shop!”

    I’m workin on my 1985.5 944 That I bought for 340$ and just got it to fire the other day! Having a problem with oil pressure, ill have to try your method of priming the system. Thanks for the awesome vids, very helpful!!!

    good job. the funny thing is, the wheels are the first thing i would check.

    • @edredas
      @edredas  3 роки тому

      Yeah it’s just a weird situation entirely. Doesn’t seem like they’re out of balance and the whole reason we were checking the suspension was because the tires were new and balanced. So not much else it could be other than the rims themselves.

    I've heard that the speed/reference sensor plugs/connectors fail more frequently than the sensors themselves.
    It's always interesting to see what surprises were left from prior half-jobs, patchwork, and missing parts on these cars. From the looks of that crush washer, I can't believe the power steering pump banjo bolt didn't snap with the torque applied.

    • @edredas
      @edredas  4 роки тому +1

      The plugs do break quite a bit but I'd say 90% of the time its the sensor itself that fails. Especially, at the connector where they just break apart while others just quit working due to age. Just in the past few years I've had to replace countless bad sensors but only two plugs. As for the rest of the car, I swear most of the time I'm just undoing 30 years of bad repairs. It's rare to see a car that just needs maintenance. There's always a lot of little things that have been messed with that adds up. Thanks!

    I enjoyed this video. You’ve been thorough. My guess after eliminating and replacing the worn out suspension parts, it’s likely the wheels and spacers.

    The steering wheel shake on the 86 turbo is almost definitely a flat spot or out of round condition in a front wheel. Porsche specified a maximum of .040 out of round for the wheels. As for your 84 with a shimmy at 55 mph, set the caster to maximum positive (equal on both sides) and it will remove that sensitivity to that shiimmy.
    Very nice video showing the complexity of the turbo engine compartment. You undid a lot of damage done by 35 years of amateur mechanics.

    • @edredas
      @edredas  4 роки тому +1

      Thanks! I'm probably just going to throw on a set of early offset phone dials on my car and be done with it. I don't really like the way those wheels ride. Even without the shimmy they're very stiff. As for his car, I think the tires are new so I think he's going to have them load balanced to see if that helps! Thanks!

    Wheels bent or not properly balanced. The 951 is quite sensitive to out of balanced and/ or bent wheels. Or tires that are not properly made (or even flat spotted).

    • @edredas
      @edredas  3 роки тому +1

      Yeah it’s definitely the wheels. I bought another 944 with a similar set of wheels and it does the same thing. Again Wheels and tires are new, I just don’t think the 944 likes big spaced out wheels. The vibration isn’t terrible but I can’t stand it so my guess is that other owners might just over look it.

    Every time I let my 944 set for more than a month the fuel pump freezes/sticks. But you can take something that sits for years and don't even have to drain the gas!

    • @edredas
      @edredas  4 роки тому

      I've had good luck starting cars that have sat up to two or three years and the fuel was still good. Could be climate, I guess. Any longer than that it starts turning into tree sap, but that takes a while. That said, I'd say that 90% of the time we have to dump the tanks since most of these cars have been sitting about 5 years on average. However, this particular car in the video was only sitting about a few days before we got it running. However we've had some real nightmares where the tanks were just packed full of sludge and rust. Thanks!

    Incredible attention to detail Brent, however all these little problems you find, do you charge the customer?, or have you agreed a fixed price? My OPC always finds extra work on my 968, and the cost always goes way over my initial quote for the work.....

    Helllo. First of all I want to say thank you for teaching us how to work on our 944. Can you help to diagnose a “clank” sound when I shift into gears. I have a 1986 944

    • @edredas
      @edredas  4 роки тому

    • @scott1333
      @scott1333 3 роки тому +1

      Probably the rubber hub in the clutch disc has failed which will cause the clank sound as the metal stops are hitting each other within the clutch disc.

    It’s always frustrating when you come across cars that have been Mickey Moused by some idiot hack who shouldn’t even doing oil changes. More than half the time you spent on this car was due to the idiot(s) that were in there before. Nice job and Good Tube 👍

    Regarding the weird problem with where the tensioner roller sat, I believe you are supposed to use spacer pt# 944-107-911-01 when you use a late oil pump with an early style manual tensioner. I think the boss on the pump is shorter where that stud goes through compared to the earlier pumps. My memory IS a bit foggy on that, however...I just recall reading about it a few years ago.

    • @edredas
      @edredas  4 роки тому

      Oh that nut on the stud was needing to sit about 60mm away from the oil pump to make the belt right. I guess I could have just pushed it way out there but it felt like it was going to snap the stud. I would have needed three of those same 30mm deep nuts to space it out far enough. So with just that spacer on the other side it was going to be no where near where it needed to be. They had it spaced out 25mm out when it was wearing the belt, so I'd need about six of those 10mm spacers to get it to line up correctly, so I decided it wasn't worth the effort. While I don't like the auto-tensioner, I'd rather use it before I have to rig something up like that. That said, I think there three versions of the oil pump. The very early cars had a pump with the spacer built in, next there was the one that uses the nut as a spacer, and then this style that is extremely recessed to make room for the auto-tensioner. I don't think there is anyway to use these with stud correctly. If I have a chance later, I probably have all three versions in the shop. I been meaning to take a look. Thanks!

    what about that rusted pipe under the airbox? why didnt you replace that?

    • @edredas
      @edredas  3 роки тому

      We usually only replace them when they're leaking. Even in that condition it was solid enough that it should last for years. So its not always worth trying to talk the owner into buying a $200 pipe that isn't an immediate concern. While we do have guys come in that will pay top dollar to replace every part, that isn't always the case.

    Would love to see how to test the DME and where is is on a non turbo
    Also why leave that gravel on the manifold iys the first thing i would have removed
    Does the non turbo have a spacer on the sensor

    • @edredas
      @edredas  3 роки тому

      Depending on the year, the DME is in the same place on a non-turbo however earlier cars have the DME under the steering wheel. As for the spacer, it is not used on the non-turbos. Since the starter ring is larger on a turbo, it needs a spacer since without one it would move the other sensor too far away from the stud it needs for reference. That said, as the nuts on the engine, I don't usually carry around a shop vac in my car so I usually leave that stuff up to the owner, especially since if I've got to clean stuff up then it's going to be extra... Thanks!

      @@edredas My car is right hand drive
      Its also 1985 early The battery is on the left (ie my passenger side )
      There is loads of room on the right
      - really strange
      I am waiting for my new sensors
      hopefully today
      Bought the car as a runner
      It was taken off the road in '95 to track - all interior except the seats where removed
      Was well looked after and then sold to another "Tracker" in 2006
      Never used on the track
      I bought the car 3 months a go as a project
      It always started easily and when it when for our yraely MOT was difficult to start
      Ok for a few days - then difficult
      A few days later (Only driven a few miles) it now will not start
      Change the Coil and now the plugs .
      The sensors will be changed JUST ARRIVED as i write
      Will contact you again iand let you know
      Yours is one of the best videos No messing about no silly music just good advise
      Still think you could have brushed of the gravel as it would cost nothing and makes it look as though you have worked on the car - But thats me!!
      Thanks gain
