Porsche 944 - Sitting for 20 Years!

  • This week we are working on a 1983 sapphire blue Porsche 944. This car hasn't been on the road since the year 2000 due to a broken timing belt that took out the valves. When it arrived at the shop, the head had been rebuilt but there was still a lot of work to do in order to get this car running again.

    Absolutely cannot thank you enough for getting my "silver"diamond out of the rough ! I still have a long way to go but now I know it runs and was put back together properly and by a professional ! Rotors are being surfaced now and I'm in the process of rebuilding all four calipers. New tires are in and ready to drive this thing ! Thank you so much ! Awesome job by you and your guys

    I love how you work on the cars outside on the grass. Makes it more familiar to me. Conditions in my garage are similar. No water, No electricity, Crappy floor and leaking roof :-D On top of that i dont have space to turn around when the car is in so i feel like a crab there going sideways all the time :-D Well, hard to find a nice garage in the city :-/

      Thanks! When I started this channel I wanted to show that these cars could be worked on with basic tools in any location. I know that having a big nice shop might get more viewers but it was never about that. We often have about 20 cars being worked on here at any given time, even though it might look like one at a time due to editing. So it would be almost impossible to fit all of them inside any shop. I did try to lease a shop recently that would be large enough but it was going to be $15k a month... so its sorta funny when people comment about me not having a large enough shop. I mean if I could just drop $15k every month on something I would be posting from a beach on Fiji and not working on cars. With that being said, luckily we have water, electricity, a breakroom, and even bathrooms on site. So its not that bad here, but its crazy expensive to lease in this area. So I completely understand what you're going through.

    I replaced the fuse box in our 85.5 to eliminate several electrical problems. The old one was corroded and had bent tabs at lots of junctions. I'm surprised it didn't start smoking in there.

      Thanks! The wheels appeared to be cast one piece BBS basket weave wheels. Not sure if that means they’re a replica wheel or not but they had BBS center caps.

    Holy cow! That cruise control box you found under the dash looks exactly like the oem cruise control box in my old '88 Jeep XJ (Cherokee).

    Hi Brent! It's so cool you read every comment! I'm just curious - what kind of rims do you think looks better on the early 80's 944? I personally loves the original 15" cookie cutters more than fuchs, wider tires looks cooler but often rides much worse, so there should be a compromise there. Phone dials is def. not my thing. 17" from newer models needs spacers, and looks a little out of place if you ask me, on the 83 (though the black turbo twisters are appealing) . But the 16" Borbet type A f. ex. they used a lot in EU on 924/44 looks really good, black and with the porsche logo in the center. Besides they fit straight on the early offset cars.

    Do they all tick that loud under the hood? sounds like a small diesel haha. I just got my '87 944 project started and idling for the first time since approx. 2016 today, it's ticking sounded similar. I know some of the noise can be injectors. Gotta do the clutch in it next, I liked your how-to series on that job. Excellent camera work and explanations!

      Check the spark plug wires. If they aren’t seated properly they will make a clacking noise so loud it sounds like a bad lifter.

      Unfortunately, we send those out to be repaired or just replace the hatch all together. We don't really have the man power here to work on them and many times things go south with them so we would rather not mess with them. Good luck and thanks!

    How bad are the stant thermostats? Couldn't really hear what you were saying about them in the audio? I just replaced seals, WP, belts, etc. on my car and installed what is probably the same thermostat (I know it was a stant for sure).

      It’s a mixed bag with those thermostats. I’ve had some that were too cold while others run at the third mark. All had the same temperature written on the box. So it’s likely they were mixed up with other thermostats, which happens with all of them but since there’s no marks on the stant then your just rolling the dice to see what you’ve got. I’ve had to go in and remove quite a few which is probably my least favorite job.

    (16:00) Did you use a tool to get the hose snug onto the tank? -I experienced difficulty when I tried to push it on by hand.

      Nope. Slid right on but I’ll often lube it. That said, if you’re using the original style hose the two ends are different sizes which can also add some frustration. Thanks!

    How did you deal with peeling clearcoat issue that these cars have?

      Considering a light sand and a clear coat at this point. Conflicting opinions with silver (me) and sapphire is always a conversation piece. I'm a fan of the weathered look , if not I'll go with gun metal gray with blacked out windows

    Is the Porsche 944 the only car where the absence of power steering is a good thing??? Did you guys forget the water pump mounted belt guard? I noticed it seemed not to have been mounted in all the shots you had of the front of the engine with the covers off.

      Yeah you'll see a lot of that... I think a lot of people have issues with their power steering, either not working properly or leaking. Those issues are not very common and are often easily solved. However, people will scrap everything to put a manual rack in. Same goes with the sunroof. People would rather just switch over to manual latches despite most sunroof issues are something simple. Not to mention that the A/C isn't that overly complicated on these cars but they will rip it out because it needs minor work. So if I were to notice a pattern here I would just think it all goes back to some of these guys just want the easy way out. I can see where they're coming from, but as they say, nothing worth having comes easy. That said, I did forget the guard so I had to go back after installing the balance-shaft belt and put it on... it happens sometimes. Wasn't my first time, won't be the last time, I'm sure!

    Hi! I have a turbo that I believe the turbo needs to be rebuilt but I live in NYC and nobody wants to work on it.
    If I paid you for your time, do you think you could walk me through how to take it out? I’m pretty good with my hands :)

      Hi, its a pretty straight forward job for the most part, however getting to some of the bolts is the troublesome part. Not sure I'd have time to guide you every step of the way, but I could probably help with some directions on how to remove it... which is easy in theory, however as mentioned getting access to some of the bolts is hardest part of the job. Thanks!

    Yo @edredas ! i have an 1983 as well everytime i crank the car the fuel pump fuse blows! literally i crank the car and poof fuse blows, add another fuse crank again poof again blows what the heck man ! any clue? idea what it could be?

      From the fuse the wires go to the fuel pump. Try pulling the black wire off the pump and while using a multimeter check to see if it is grounding out somewhere. It could be that the wire has been damaged or poorly repaired and it is coming into contact with the chassis. It could also be caused by an internal issue with the pump causing it to draw too many amps. So if the wire is fine check the resistance across the terminals on the pump. I hope that helps!

    I've got an 1983 that sat for 20 years, got spark, good battery and fuel getting to the fuel rail but it won't start. It fires right up with starting fluid though. Any ideas?

      Could be the injectors are clogged with varnished fuel.

      The injectors were most definitely gunked up, cleaned them out, put new seals in and it fired right up! Only problem is it's idling really high, I turned the air screw all the way down on the throttle body but it's still at 1500 rpm
