    I’m a happy owner of a ‘90 s2 Cabriolet. I’ve never driven a 951….I can’t help but wonder: what is the difference? Regardless, these beautiful 944s (and the 924, 928 and - to a lesser degree - the 968) arguably, pulled Porsche’s bacon from the fire of being “a car company that once was”. Anyone who appreciates the marque, should pay at least “some” appreciation for these front engine, water-cooled cars. Besides that, they are just too damned much fun to drive! AND…..I don’t have to take out another mortgage on my home to own one!

      Awesome! Are you also local to Charlotte? We’re planning a drive this spring. This was a very nice car despite the small flaws. I told the current owner about it but once I got to driving wished that I had bought it but he seems really happy with it. I am here after wrecking my 951 last night. My buddies and I were 4 deep going to a bar downtown and a truck hit me so hard at an intersection that we spun around twice. BtW 1987 944 Turbo is first year with airbags. (:
    I am looking for a clean body to swap parts. The insurance company said that any repairs done in the last 12 months will be reimbursed. I painted car, did all brakes, Bigger turbo and top end rebuild, cam seals and timing belts, suspension, bushings, and clutch. I have 11k in receipts for adjuster on a car that may top out in value at 13k without the repair reimbursement. Bahahahaa
    The sunroof was in the up position and slung off the car and slid down the road about 500 feet or so.

    Nice work. Did you remove the radiator fan? If so, what's the easiest way to do so? There's parts on top and below the radiator & radiator fan on my '86 951 that are blocking an easy removal, like in a non-turbo.

    • @edredas
      @edredas  Рік тому

      In this situation I didn't have to remove the fans, or at least I don't think I did. It was about 5 years ago. If you need to remove the fans then there really isn't an easy solution. You'll unfortunately have to remove some hoses and then drop it out the bottom. I hope that helps!

    EDREDAS, IS THERE A RIGHT WAY TO PUT BACK THE CV AXLE ON A 89 944 TURBO. Thanks a bunch BRo

    • @edredas
      @edredas  5 років тому +1

      If it is a new or rebuilt axle then no. You just need to install it and torque the bolts down. However in some cases people might repack the axles with grease. These axles may have wear so they will swap them on to the other side so that they will not continue to wear in the same area. I hope that helps!

      Hi, a turbo swap is always fun! Its not too bad of a job. Do you have an 1985.1 or 1985.5? If you have the 1985.1 it will require some wiring and fabrication, but its not too hard. Good luck!

    • @edredas
      @edredas  5 років тому

      Not yet, I've had a few guys ask but no one has followed up with it. That said, I've talked to quite a few guys with LS swaps so I have a pretty good idea of what needs to be done, though. If you want more information on check out the 944hybrids website. If I were doing it for myself I'd probably try to fabricate as much as I could, but for a customers car that probably isn't realistic. However, If you buy all the aftermarket parts its gonna get expensive quick, but it will save a lot of time an headache. I hope that helps!

    Do you find that one brand of water pump is superior to others? Thanks for the great video!

    • @edredas
      @edredas  5 років тому +4

      Not really, I just use new pumps rather than rebuilt. I've even used cheap Chinese no-name pumps that cost $50 and they're all still going! One of those cheap pumps already has about 50k miles on it. I mostly install the $89 URO pumps from Rock Auto and have them on my personal cars, as well. My pump on my '88 924S is three years old and I've been to Florida several times (1500 round trip) and cross country this summer (8000 miles round trip) in 120+ degree temperatures! Not to mention this car is driven daily and its doing just fine with over 15,000 miles on it and I have no plans to change it any time soon! That said, as I mentioned in my timing belt video... belt tension is key! So which pump you choose is pretty irrelevant since even a $700 Porsche pump will fail under 10 miles if the belt is too tight! I hope that helps!

      Timing belt? Its a fairly common part available at most auto parts stored for about $14. Don't forget to replace the balance shaft belt too, which is a little harder to get but cheaper if you buy it online. If you are buying both then it might make sense to buy them from the same place. I usually get these belts from Pelican parts, Autohaus AZ, or FCP Euro... etc. I hope that helps!

    • @edredas

      Hi, I have a few early cars here with sunroof issues at the moment. One car had all the wiring mixed up by a previous owner while another has a broken cable tube, due to the cable binding. However, yet another has a burned up motor, so you might could start there since you'd hear the relays clicking in that case, but honestly its hard to say what it could be. In many cases it takes us several hours or more to dig in and diagnose those early roofs, so its pretty much impossible to say what could be the issue without seeing it since we come across so many issues with them. @@mogulin_da_skies7516 Yup, if you have a Euro model its only a 61 hp difference. The turbo made 217 sae net hp in both US and European forms. Its also worth pointing out that at the time the N/A European models measured HP in DIN BHP which is a gross rating and can't be compared to the US SAE NET rating. It was illegal in the states to sell cars with gross power ratings but completely fine in Europe at the time. Thanks!

    Plastic ancillary tap on water pump for Turbo Cooling. On the new pump kit I got I had to drill out the inside passage as it was no open (not open for 944 NA cars)/ soo be sure to check water passage open on that white plastic tap on water pump.

    Boy pulling out my windshield from my 86 NA was such a pain in the ass but it went fairly clean. Unfortunately somebody already cut the interior pieces so I went with it.

    You're missing the bottom engine cover. The bottom engine cover is also an added aerodynamic piece, necessary to add down force at high speed, by creating suction, just like formula one cars do. Most Porsche 944 owners, are not aware of the advantages of their bottom engine cover. I would urge every 944 owner to take a good look at the shape and design, once it has been bolted on. You'll easily see the high pressure/low pressure sides, from front to back. Like a wide V shape. Exactly like most high speed race cars.

    Looks like you're getting a little extra boost vs stock; should be around 280-300 hp at that level.

    • @edredas
      @edredas  5 років тому

      Yep, it has a manual boost controller on it, but didn't look to see exactly how much boost it was running on the other gauge. I'm not sure its the fastest 951 I've been in but it was certainly one of the fastest!

    about the oil pump sleeve - i'm planing to do mine, wile doing timing and oil cooler reseal , so what i find, that is the different sizes for the oil pump sleeve -
    38x55x7 for early cars and 38x52x7 for the 85' and later cars but I'm confused by the part numbers
    i'm looking at them on pelican and there is a different part numbers but all of them will fit(by pelican site)my car , what I doubt, especially after this video
    looks like - 944 107 161 02 and 944 107 161 04 is for late models and 944 107 161 01 and 944 107 161 03 is for the early models, but i'm not sure, as i'm new to 944, not even drive one yet

    • @edredas
      @edredas  5 років тому +1

      Hi, all those pump sleeves will fit any year 944. I think the one that got stuck on this car was 944-107-161-02 which could mean that the inner diameter is a bit smaller, but shouldn't be an issue on most cars. Perhaps the crankshaft on this car had a burr I couldn't remove which caused it to get stuck, but is something to look out for. That said, the measurements you gave are for the front main seal, and those are different according to the year. As you mentioned the 55mm seal ( 999-113-268-40 ) is for the early cars while the 52mm seal ( 999-113-331-40 ) is for the later cars. I hope that helps!

    So two questions: do you ever get mad working on a car and why don’t you have a garage to work in?

    • @edredas
      @edredas  4 роки тому +1

      I rarely get mad since it doesn't really do any good and you can end up messing something up. You just have to know when to walk away and come back to it. Sometimes once you've had a chance to relax it will all fall into place. That said, I do have a small shop but since I have anywhere between 12-14 cars here at anytime I only can fit so much in there so that leaves a lot of cars being worked on outside. I do plan to move to a much larger shop soon but it might be awhile before I can afford one that could possibly fit 10+ cars inside. Thanks!
