  • A quick tour of the Frazer Price Palette Box
    I made this video in response to the interest I get about The Frazer Price Palette Box for watercolour artists on my website. I hope that this is a helpful addition to that information. You can read more about this palette box and see more images on my website at: brusheswithwat...

    FANTASTIC! Thank you John Haywood. I received my Frazer Price Palette Box brought from under the tree on Christmas morning and what a delight it is. I love it. Always wanted one of these. First introduced to the Frazer box when an online artist bragged about the one he had just received as a gift and then I found your website covering the fascinating history of the box. Jacksons told me they sell them and Voila! Here it is in my hand. Superb piece. Happy Frazer Pallet painting everyone. ✏️🎨🖍️💌⚓️

      Thanks so much for this, that’s so kind of you! I still think that tutorials are a long way off for me but you might like to follow my blog at ‘brusheswithwatercolour.com’ where I do a weekly post of what I’m up to! Good luck with the painting - I know I’m hugely biased but it can be so rewarding and enjoyable!

    They are quite sought after

      I think that they are, but now that they're being manufactured again they're much more readily available so supply isn't so much of a problem, but they're still quite an investment.

      I'm so pleased that you like the video and really appreciate you commenting! It is a great palette and I've already had a couple of people get in touch with me to say that they've bought one of these new ones from Jacksons and that they're delighted with them - if you do decide to get one, I'm sure you won't regret it!

    Hi John......interesting video , I have one of these palette boxes and I reckon it was bought art £35 as it bought in the late 70's. I loved your adaptions that you have made , I can get the water containers from Jacksons , where can I get the 3 well mixing palette from that you are using.

      Hi Karl and thanks for getting in touch - always nice to meet another Frazer Price owner! The three well tray was modified from a 6 well plastic tray. I had to use a small hack saw to cut it down to size so it would fit in the lid, and some sandpaper to tidy up the edges, then I cut the tray in half, turned one-half upside down and then glued the other half to it so that it would sit flat in the lid. I can't recall exactly where I got the palette from but here's a link to one that looks very similar: www.hobbycraft.co.uk/plastic-rectangular-palette-6-slots/570437-1000 - good luck with the modifications, hope they work out for you!

    These are beautifully made. Sadly heaviness is the last thing I want from a travel palette, though the design itself is beautiful!

    • @johnhaywoodwatercolours
      @johnhaywoodwatercolours  3 роки тому

      Ah, yes, I can see how the extra weight could be a deterrent! Personally, I've never found it to be 'too' heavy and for me, the ability to mix on enamelled surfaces has always outweighed other considerations. (I must also confess that travelling light is always something I've struggled with!)

    Hi there. I hope you enjoy you new box. Just a few comments.
    Firstly - it costs £100 GBP. What do you get? A selection of mixing trays that are too shallow to be of any great use in the studio - you'll need a more practical palette to mix your colours. Outdoors, it would be even less practical. They would spill everywhere!
    Secondly, to include paints of the 'same assumed quality as the container', it would cost yet another ca £75 GBP. If you filled all three channels in the box, about £100 GBP.
    The W&N option gives you perfect world top quality paints for less than a quarter of the price and would be far more comfortable to hold, in the studio and certainly outdoors.
    Thirdly, no travel brushes which might cost another £25 (at least, to keep the same quality).
    Fourth - the water wells are rather small and would soon be contaminated. The plastic inserts would cost about £1-2 GBP MAX to produce.
    It is a very attractive box which must have cost at least £5-10 GBP to produce but, what is the old saying? - "All that glisters is not gold."
    Every good wish with your new treasure.
    HAPPY NEW YEAR.

      Hi Martyn - I can't help wondering if you actually watched my video?
      If you had, you'd have seen that I do agree with you on some of the points you mentioned. So much so in fact I modified my palette, which again, you'd have seen had you watched the video!
      As for the relative merits between the Winsor and Newton field box and the Frazer Price, I have both palettes - again, shown in the video. In fact you may be horrified to learn that I have at least two of the Winsor and Newton field palettes and three of the original Frazer Price Palettes - that's just how much I'm into them! Of the two, I much prefer the Frazer Price - particularly because I prefer mixing on an enamelled surface to plastic. Your point about it not being any good in the studio is sightly lost on me. It's certainly just as capable in the studio as the Winsor and Newton Field box but both are primarily sketching palettes and I don't see anyone recommending either of them for use in the studio. If you'd like to ignore my only other video, it features my Binning Monro style palette that I do use in the studio.
      With my modifications to the Frazer Price Palette, I don't experience any of the problems you mentioned. I also only use tube pigments from the Winsor and Newton Professional range which allows me to choose my own specific palette, allows me to use only as much paint as I need while always ensuring I have wet pigment and, for a frequent painter, represents far better value for money in larger tubes than the dry pans that come pre-supplied. With regards to brushes, the brush that comes with the Winsor and Newton Field Box is too small to be of any real use, so whichever palette someone might choose, they'll probably need to get some additional brushes.
      My personal choice of travel brushes is the Da Vinci Maestro Series 1503 - ludicrously expensive brand new but I managed to pick up a complete set (sizes 12, 10, 8, 6, 4) for an absolute bargain on ebay (which is the same place I bought all of my Frazer Price Palettes - each one for less than £100 - as you'd have known had you watched my video).
      So my 'new treasure' is actually my old treasure (my video pre-dates the relatively recent re-release of the Frazer Price Palette) and I'm sorry to disappoint you, but I absolutely love my Frazer Price palette and have done for years! Using the Frazer Price Palette, with my tube pigments and my Da Vinci brushes brings me no end of joy. Yes there are cheaper alternatives and people are absolutely free to make their own mind up about what might suit them best. I'm really passionate about my watercolour painting so am quite happy to invest in my passion.
      You are of course quite entitled to your opinions but can I please ask that next time, you at least have the courtesy to watch the video that someone has put time and effort into making before commenting?

      @@johnhaywoodwatercolours Sorry, mate. I was a bit heavy. Uncalled-for and I apologise. I am not the best one to talk when it come to being extravagant re my passions. Please excuse.
      I suppose what was behind my comment was that in an age when the world seems to be moving away from trad fine art and going crazy about digital imagery, I am trying to convince my friends and grand-kids to take up artwork in a way that will not break the bank.
      It is not the users of 'luxury' that get to me but the companies that wrap up our passions to their own advantage and profit. Every good wish and once again, forgive my impertinence. Paul in the UK

      Many thanks for this, really decent of you, and I appreciate it. I also understand your view on our obsession with all things digital. Our lives are increasingly lived and experienced digitally at the expense of much simpler, and in my biased mind, more rewarding pursuits - such as watercolour painting! I also know from my own experience what a tough sell this is to any young person compared to doing just about anything on an iPad! Even so, it’s up to us to keep trying! All the best, and thanks again.

    I remember see this advertized in a watercolour mag ( that I still have ). It was above my budget back then. Also I never liked the name much - it reminded me of " Fisher Price " kids toys. Even if the just called it the " Frazer " box it would be better

    Mine arrived today ; I hate it, sorry to say. What's the point in a tiny bottle of water? 9 Full sized wells... not enough. You can try and squeeze another 3 half sized wells in each row... but alas, it's a squeeze. Frustration continues. The 3 mixing area foldouts are all flat ; can't mix a wash. Whoever designed this has never even tried to paint a picture. Yes, it's a tried and tested design, but it really is not practical. Brass plated, not solid brass. Alternative ; a large schmincke tin with the recessed wells for half the price.

    • @johnhaywoodwatercolours
      @johnhaywoodwatercolours  10 місяців тому +2

      Sorry you don’t like it! I personally agree with much of what you say, which is why I adapted mine. I actually adapted it even further than is shown in this video. Where the water bottle and little water wells are located, I put in the bottom of small enamelled pie dish to enable me to mix up larger quantities of paint. If you’re interested, you can see this at the bottom of this blog post: johnhaywoodwatercolours.co.uk/2021/09/08/watercolour-tinkering/ - While I sympathise with your frustrations, I do also think that everything that frustrates you about it could have been predicted from looking at photos and videos of it? Perhaps you could you return it and get a refund or swap it for something you’d prefer?

    Who made the original, and who makes it now? Without this information, it’s impossible to distinguish genuine from counterfeit. This is nothing but an advertisement for your own social media, and someone else’s potentially fraudulent resale.

    • @johnhaywoodwatercolours
      @johnhaywoodwatercolours  3 місяці тому

      Oh please! I made this video when only the 'original' version existed, so how exactly would you have liked me to tell you who was going to make it in the future? To answer your question though, It was originally produced by and marketed by 'Frazer Price Products'. As far as I'm aware, it was 're-issued' by Jacksons Art Supplies in the UK, and I'm not sure it can accurately be described as as a counterfeit. My understanding is that the original ones were solid brass, whereas the reissued ones are an 'electro plated brass finish' which makes it hard to discern the difference if you only have photographs to compare with. Another 'tell' is that the new ones are usually supplied with individual half pans. The original version had three sliding trays (as shown in the video), with each tray having two full pans and two half pans. The reissue, even with its slight differences, means that many more people can enjoy painting with these lovely little palettes than would otherwise have been the case.
