Hi, Becky! You're the first person I've seen actually using this beautiful palette! I agree with you about being scared to use it out-of-doors. I've always had the feeling that they intended it more for a desktop ornament than for actual use - and certainly, given its price tag, if I ever had one, it'd be a studio-only set! BTW, did it clean up easily? How much have you actually used the palette in the year since you made the video? What did you swap for the green?
I agree that the tiny water pots aren't really practical for a larger-than-A5 painting. I use 35mm film canisters with my A6 set-up, and they work really well, but think even A5 would challenge me with those.
I have swapped from using larger water containers in general, as where I am, the water is *very* hard - my kettle needs descaling every day and if I boil veggies etc in a saucepan, have to do that, too. A squirt of lemon juice while pan or kettle is still hot does the job. Anyway, it means that I'm using something I never, ever thought I would - bottled water! But I have discovered that a smaller jar for water works well after all! They're the size of those swish (and expensive!) desserts, which come in glass pots instead of plastic and they take about 125ml water.
(No, I didn't buy those swish desserts. When a couple of my UK friends visited, they wanted to try some, and so I have the jars without the cost! That was good, as I don't go for that sort of shop-bought dessert, preferring to make my own. Oh, and yes, I recycle the plastic bottles by using them in the garden, though one bottle lasts a long time, even with things like colour swatching! It's not a 'posh' water - it's the eco range from the local supermarket, and I only use it for art. Tap water's fine otherwise.)
Thanks for yet another really interesting video! (emojis aren't working -again! - so please imagine a smiling face here)

    • @BeckyTregear

I have to admit that I haven't used the box in AGES and I still haven't changed out that green! 🤣 This year I need to go through my watercolour collection and start using some of my palettes more often. It's pretty embarrassing how much I have accumulated, like an episode of Artist Hoarders (not that such a show exists, but if it did, I'd be on it). I will think about doing a palette revisit video for this one...thanks for inadvertantly prompting me, lol.
So to answer your question about how much I've used it; umm not a lot....😬

Well, it was sure fun to see this palette in action! I think for me, those water holders would be more useful when used in conjunction with a water brush. Sometimes I like to dip my water brush into a little bit of water instead of always squeezing it. I would get frustrated with their small size other than that, lol. Such a beautiful palette! How fun to see these paints used like that. I've really only seen Maimeri Blu paints in swatches on Oto Kano's channel, so this was really fun to see them being used. They are bright! And I see what you mean about that green. Yikes. Fun video, Becky!

Stunning palette and great painting to show off all those colours! That light green is beautiful but disappointing for its position. It's obviously a bit late now but keeping to the same brand, custom blend your own green and darken it with a small amount of red...you might just fall in love with it 😍 Also, don't worry about protecting that mirror finish on the palette. The more you handle it, the quicker it will develop a Stunning antique gold-like patina that won't show fingerprints any more - it will just keep getting better and better with age😉

Maimeri Blu is a good brand that has been around for ages, I first encountered it around 30 years ago, it was expensive them. They were being stocked mainly by a company that had a lot of restoration art supplies, none of the mainstream art shops were supplying them. Here in Europe the prices are not quite so bad though. The demand these days is for single pigments though nearly all ranges have mixes as well. I love the box, if they are still available at the end of the year, who knows. I have a historic pigments set I would put in it. Something tells me the little extra space left over might be so you could use a mixture of half and full pans. If so that would be useful. Aren’t watercolours the most addictive of things! Palettes as well!

The Mars black from this brand really granulates making your own Schminke granulating or the Van Gogh darker granular colors. It is exactly how they were made. The crackling look looks neat for a background. They don’t look as saturated as some other professional wcs. I just have the Mars black. I don’t know how I feel about the lack of saturation. Try to add an earth color or a prussian blue to the permanent green light to modify it a bit. It's okay to have a bunch of pigments mixed if they are somehow near on the color wheel. I don't think it will get muddy. It will be a more interesting and more natural green. Maybe you can do a color chart and see how this one works with other colors before you swap it. I really like the updated Maimeri Blu watercolors, but I don't think the price in Italy and in the rest of the world is the same.. On Jackson's the tubes are in line with other professional watercolor though. Their potter's pink is very good by the way. Also, the Dragon's Blood is gorgeous.
