Wow! Excellent comprehensive video. The hobby community owes a great debt of gratitude to you for testing all of these different products on a variety of materials and surfaces. 🙏🏻
Wow just watched this 2 year old primer test you did. Loved it. Thank for all the work you put it to it. Very valuable testing. I use primer on many of my models.
Man, that's some hard work you did. Multiple brands, multiple sufaces, precise, detailed. Was looking for a comparison between primers brand, you did it. Nothing more to say than good job. Thanks !
I’m new to model building and I bought Mr. Surfacer 1000 because it was all they had at the store at the time, glad to see I made a pretty good purchase

Watching your videos I am now fluent with my airbrush and the education of do's & don'ts. I am having fun and holy shit sticks like half the time now it takes me for anything. I concur with all the comments below thank you for your hard work and time. Your channel has saved me so much time and money on all aspects on modelling. your a star👏👏👏
Awesome test! If you ever do another one or if you still have these test pieces....a durability and adhesion test would be awesome! Testing the adhesion of primer to surface as well as the top coat to the primer (which you'd have to use the same top coat for them all). Scratch test where they use something like a sharp screw in a block and drag it over the primers to compare which scratch easier, using a real string tape and seeing if it pulls the primer off, ect. I'm going to get a couple of those that you liked....it really helped me narrow down! Thanks!
this is the best primer guide on the internet, it is very detailed, i went for the mr hobby ones, and this video helped me understand primers better thanks so much man!!!!
Absolutely awesome! Definitely ditching rustoleum and going to the Mr. Surfaces especially the black. Just wow! I cant believe you did this many! Just watched the whole thing.
I really appreciate your videos Rex, you go above and beyond when you test product. I ended up buying the Mad Works airbrush after checking your video. Keep on keeping on!
Awesome test! This is a major asset to the hobby. We owe you big time :-) By the way, for model trains or dioramas the Mr. Surfacer 500 is great for a base coat for "concrete"
Thank you for this timely introduction to your YT channel. Good old Mr Google bought your video up on my search. I had been looking for a substitute primer as my last 80g aerosol of Tamiya was just about done. While out and about trying to find a replacement I happened upon the Rust-oleum 2X Primer white 340g for much less than a replacement Tamiya can. This Bob Ross happy accident happened a couple of weeks ago and I've been procrastinating about trying the new primer. No more thanks to your timely appearance via Tube-of-You. Now I will go and explore some more of your fine tales. Best regards from Canada.
Very nice test, quite comprehensive. For general plastic modeling work, the various Mr. Surfacers are great. For my big models that go in the water, I like Duplicolor primer, but the Rustoleum sander/fillers are very good as well. Thanks for taking the time to compare all of these!
out here on the west coast I use a primer that I buy at my local hardware store called Touch Tone. It comes in light and dark gray, black and red. I spray all my paints over it and never have had a problem.
Excellent video. I find that so long as a plastic surface is free of cosmetic defects, the best primer is none at all. Just a spray of adhesion promotor, and then topcoats. I've had great luck with Duplicolor adhesion promoter in the aerosol can. Bulldog (harder to find unless you go to an auto body supplier) works great, too, but ONLY if you spray with your own spray equipment. Their aerosol cans are no good, spitting and sputtering globs of the stuff. Overall, for a higher-build primer, I like Rust-Oleum grey. Never noticed any significant difference between the "automotive" one and the regular. It's always advisable to stick with the same brand of paint products for all coats, but I've never had a problem going over it with Krylon or Duplicolor top coats.
Dude, I really appreciate the work you've put into this vid. Most of the hobby spray primers aren't available where I'm from, so I wasn't sure which auto brand to use for gunpla. I might be able to snatch one of the krylon colormaster or Rust-Oleum painter's touch.
Rudy Tooty Version compressor with Patriot 105-1 airbrush is only around $170-$219 if it is in stock. A pretty good deal. SpayGunner has the Patriot 105 single nozzle airbrush for $79. They are currently,as of Dec. 2022, out of stock on the Patriot 105 kit with the 2 extra needles. Going for &98. I decided to get the Badger 2020 Sotar with the added .5 and .7 needles for $125.00. I bought one of the single action airbrushes you tested for doing primer coats and the like. I just wanted a second little better airbrush. I bought a different compressor on Amazon that came with an dual action airbrush but I don't know the quality.
my favorite combo is Rust-Oleum 2-N-1 Fill and Sand Primer then prim over with Krylon automotive 2 in 1 primer for mixed material's like resin and plastic . strangely enough it does help with weak points on some thin model attachments
Thank you for doing everything you do on this channel. It was a long video, but I enjoyed it, had it playing while I doing some painting. I'll have to try that Testors primer and the Mr. Surfacer. Ive used the Army Painter stuff in the past and had decent results with it ..but I'm always looking to improve my arsenal. I wouldve snagged the $105 compressor, but I recently bought the one from Amazon that you linked. At the time, it was the best for the money. Love this channel and it's content, keep up the amazing work!
I have always used Tamiya. Tried the army painter, good stuff and is available through Amazon.Gonna try the Vallejo after seeing this. Take care of yourself and stay safe.🍻🌲
Loved the tamiya fine primer! I used to use a spray can primer for cars and it tends to become too thick (fills imperfections well but i don't need to all the time). After using tamiya fine primer my end results became much better. Granted i can't fill imperfections anymore. Will just have to get a different solution for that now since i don't need it all the time.
Somehow you always seem to do a review on products I am using right now and trying to decide on... Again you answer my questions for me, and I am sure, a lot of others... Cheers 👍🇦🇺
I didn't realize the self etching primer was only for metal. I used it on a plastic model car prior to knowing that, luckily without any issues at all. I just didn't like how heavy/thick it sprayed, like all Rustoleum cans.. but the paint came out great.
One small comment. First loving your videos. Regarding your links. For a lot of your videos you provide a link to the website but not to the specific page for the product. There are so many versions of said products that it is confusing. I just want to buy the exact one in your video. Such as your Compressor you don't state what manufacture/ model number of your compressor. Maybe, I just missed it. Great videos. I have bought many items based on your recommendations, setting up my painting booth.
Thanks for the video. The only one I don't think I saw you hit was TTC (Tactical... Combat Miniatures?) They have a line of color primers as well. You did several I'd never heard of before because I'm from tabletop gaming. The Model Master for example. Usually I hear Tamiya for the 'model' aspect of the hobby.
Incredible job putting all this together. A great tip for anyone that uses an FDM 3D printer, the primer at 44:30 is fantastic for filling and sanding away your layer lines! Was glad to see this stuff in the video and it really is an awesome primer, especially for 3D printing models. 2-3 coats with sanding in-between will give you a very smooth finish! You should look into a 3D printer for some model printing Rex (as if you don't have enough kits to paint haha)
@@barbatosrex9473 I'd suggest something Resin based if you are looking for the highest quality. I'd highly suggest the Elegoo Mars, available on amazon and fairly affordable for the quality. Here's a great video from another channel I follow :) ua-cam.com/video/Gh7EcEmWa08/v-deo.html Although if you are going larger scale, an FDM printer may be a better bet. A Creality Ender is a favorite for a lot of people.
@@barbatosrex9473 elegoos are cheap and great printers! Go for a Mars 2 pro (2k) or Mars 3 (4k) but small print size, or Saturn series (bigger print) like S or 2 (both real 4k). If you have space (and money) enough, definitely for Jupiter but... It's huge, really HUGE (expensive, maintenance costs and replacing components are very very expensive)
@@ScottDodsonVideo there is better than just a Mars (not monochrome-lcd!!!) and Creality for the same prices range. Definitely i would NOT recommend those printers! Both neither amazon (official sellers website are WAY CHEAPER than amazon!)
Thanks for the videos, very informative, Im pretty new to this stuff and just wanted to ask are the Rust-Oleum 2x primers enamel or acrylic ? What kinda colors am i supposed to use with them ? im very confused. Thanks
You didn’t try it but duplicolor adhesion promoter. It changed my modeling life. Work in automotive and it’s for vinyl body panels mostly (stuff paint doesn’t generally like to bond to), and it’s a blast to use on models. It’s clear so it’s kinda weird to work with.
I had goodluck with Rustoleum Universal Bonding Primer for my Gundams. Just need at least 10 to 12 inches distance when spraying. The key is light coats.
You should try Valspar gray and black. Also you can get different caps like you got with the Vallejo paint from Montana cans, which is also great paint with a wide selection of colors.Speaking of stink,Krylon and Rust-O-Leum silver and gold metallic's are the absolute worst!! It's worse than being in a spray booth shooting lacquer. I have never used Krylon bonding primer, but have used regular Krylon primer with no problem what so ever.I also use Valspar and Dupli-Color primers
you know, you should use the spray on long strikes, pressing it before you are on top of the surface of the kit, not pressing just above it, dont know if im clear
Wow, thanks for the extensive testing! I think the Testors primer is good for unifying the base color when using different modeling materials like brass, plastic, and resin, but it probably falls way short in the smoothing ability that you have with Mr. Surfacer. I can get Mr. Surfacer in bottles for airbrushing, but my local store doesn't carry the spray cans. So my preferred spray can primer is Tamiya fine in grey or white. Usually white for brighter paints and grey for darker paints. I use Vallejo paints, but have never seen the primer. I would like to try it, now that I've seen your test.
Excellent test comparison. Returning to modeling after about 45 years and seen it is a whole new ball game. My biggest concern with automotive and general purpose primers is the solids size. My fear is these would have a tendency to fill the small door and window trim lines.
Something I just recently learned is that there are many meanings when people talk about primers, but they are rarely mentioned: 1. Color uniformity or background color: If the surface is different colors or if fx a black surface needs to be white, you might use a lighter primer. 2. Adhesion layer: Metal etching primer is one example, or when people talk about "grip" 3. Sanding primer: When you need to do all the above AND manipulate the surface geometry. What I have learned so far about sanding primer; Look for drying time, if under 20-30 minutes it is probably just paint with really bad sanding properties. Even if it mentions sandability. Best bet is automotive products from reputable brands. In EU go for Colormatic (expensive) or Presto (cheaper) They lay on heavy, less running, but they shrink when drying. They also have estimations on the finished layer thickness
Came here more as a PSA than anything else. I picked up Rustoleum 2x primer and used it on a tamiya beetle 1/24 kit a couple days ago, the white primer. Last night I sprayed on some TS Racing White from Tamiya and it crazed/wrinkled. I was pretty shocked by it and went through all the steps in my head. Was there water on the paint, did I drop alcohol or some other substrate on the finish? The weird part is only sections of body crazed and other parts requiring primer like the car seats did not craze. Also whole sections of the body were unaffected, just the fenders and rear quarter. Read through the directions on the can and it said something like, paint adhesion on plastic in 5-7 days! I waited 2 days, so I assume you really need to let this stuff cure before you lay on your color coat. Thoughts?
Dude! Perfect timing...I'm getting back into the hobby ( all kinds of kits AND gaming minis ) and I was wondering how these primers stacked up. I've been using dupli color filler primer for larger kits ( 1/48 war planes ) with fair success. Awesome channel!
@@barbatosrex9473 if possible the acrylics gloss black primer Vallejo,Badger,Greenstuffworld,etc...(including Tamiya, even it was kind of hybrid acrylic..)bottles and spraycan, thanks a lot !
When I use Tamiya sprays the primer helps the final coat adhear... i have found that Tamiya paints can be a bit weak and will rub off.. i have found that primers help prevent that.. that is just my experience and I could be trying to handle the model too soon..
Question about Mr Surfacer: I love the stuff, but I get the little pot and mix it for airbrushing. However, I’d love to use the cans for ease of use with larger 1/48 models. How does it work in the booth for a larger kit? My concern is accuracy and the finish. Can you get close enough without saturation? Can you back off without making a huge mess or affecting the finish? Thanks in advance!
First off great video! I just discovered your channel, and this is a great service for everyone, so thank you. If I could make a suggestion, since the videos are long, maybe take 3 minutes at the end, with your summary of the product winners and losers and other notes. Also, have you done any comparisons of varnishes? Matte, gloss, or satin would be great to see. Thanks again. I also liked the decal setters video. 👍
I have received very good results with the Brite Touch line of primers on plastic models. But I have noticed that they need to be well-shaken and at a warm temperature. The finish is smooth and sucks down nice into detail. I've only noticed Rex's results when the can isn't shaken thoroughly. Plus, the price is great. I've begun decanting it into my airbrush for finer control.
As a miniature gamer/.hobbyist, I find the Vallejo rattle cans are a good middle ground of price to performance. The GW and Army painter stuff is just to pricey for me and the Mister surfacer/tamiya stuff is over kill for painting 50 clan rats.
I am always impressed with how much work that you put into these videos. Thank you again for your hard work.

Something I just recently learned is that there are many meanings when people talk about primers, but they are rarely mentioned:
1. Color uniformity or background color: If the surface is different colors or if fx a black surface needs to be white, you might use a lighter primer.
2. Adhesion layer: Metal etching primer is one example, or when people talk about "grip"
3. Sanding primer: When you need to do all the above AND manipulate the surface geometry.
What I have learned so far about sanding primer;
Look for drying time, if under 20-30 minutes it is probably just paint with really bad sanding properties. Even if it mentions sandability. Best bet is automotive products from reputable brands. In EU go for Colormatic (expensive) or Presto (cheaper)
They lay on heavy, less running, but they shrink when drying.
Thoughts?
All very good but I want to know how easily scratched off each primer is.
Dude! Perfect timing...I'm getting back into the hobby ( all kinds of kits AND gaming minis ) and I was wondering how these primers stacked up. I've been using dupli color filler primer for larger kits ( 1/48 war planes ) with fair success. Awesome channel!
Thanks for watching buddy 👍
Great video !
Hope if you can make a video of the gloss black primer both spraycan and bottle paints too, thanks a lot !!
Which Gloss Black primer are specifically talking about
@@barbatosrex9473 if possible the acrylics gloss black primer Vallejo,Badger,Greenstuffworld,etc...(including Tamiya, even it was kind of hybrid acrylic..)bottles and spraycan, thanks a lot !
Great video. Can you do a video where you test the various primers for acrylics? Mission Models, Vallejo, Testers, etc.Thanks.
I’m gonna pick up some Mr Hobby!
When I use Tamiya sprays the primer helps the final coat adhear... i have found that Tamiya paints can be a bit weak and will rub off.. i have found that primers help prevent that.. that is just my experience and I could be trying to handle the model too soon..
Unbelievably great review!!
My Varnish test is in the planning stages now. Gathering resources for it now 👍
You should try ,or review the BEHR spray paints. Paint and primer in one, I use them a lot and they are great!
Excellent primers and clear coat too.
The Rustoleum 2X grey say Ultra Coverage to the right of the 2x I do believe it and the white are the same formula just different colors and marketing
As a miniature gamer/.hobbyist, I find the Vallejo rattle cans are a good middle ground of price to performance. The GW and Army painter stuff is just to pricey for me and the Mister surfacer/tamiya stuff is over kill for painting 50 clan rats.
Hello Barbatos Rex - thank you for sharing these reviews - I also use these a bit so this was super helpful! I susbscribed!
