  • Here I test 36 different spray can primers for scale modeling. Included in this test are non scale model brands like Dupli-Color, Krylon and Rust-Oleum.
I test them on several different surfaces to compare their performance.
There's a few here that I feel are the top choice and a surprise or two.

Awesome test! If you ever do another one or if you still have these test pieces....a durability and adhesion test would be awesome! Testing the adhesion of primer to surface as well as the top coat to the primer (which you'd have to use the same top coat for them all). Scratch test where they use something like a sharp screw in a block and drag it over the primers to compare which scratch easier, using a real string tape and seeing if it pulls the primer off, ect.
I'm going to get a couple of those that you liked....it really helped me narrow down! Thanks!

I'm sort of new to the hobby. Been an artist my whole life but I stick to 3d prints these days. Resin & plastics.... I'm a hand painter and that was my reputation. Watching your videos I am now fluent with my airbrush and the education of do's & don'ts. I am having fun and holy shit sticks like half the time now it takes me for anything. I would cheesy like , want to simply say thank you! If it wasn't for your approach & the way you "hands on" show how to do it all ........ I may have very well quit and just hand painted everything. Videos like this, where we all know you have to be losing $$ doing is seriously appreciated. Thanks!

I didn't realize the self etching primer was only for metal. I used it on a plastic model car prior to knowing that, luckily without any issues at all. I just didn't like how heavy/thick it sprayed, like all Rustoleum cans.. but the paint came out great.

you know, you should use the spray on long strikes, pressing it before you are on top of the surface of the kit, not pressing just above it, dont know if im clear

Something I just recently learned is that there are many meanings when people talk about primers, but they are rarely mentioned:
    1. Color uniformity or background color: If the surface is different colors or if fx a black surface needs to be white, you might use a lighter primer.
    2. Adhesion layer: Metal etching primer is one example, or when people talk about "grip"
    3. Sanding primer: When you need to do all the above AND manipulate the surface geometry.
    What I have learned so far about sanding primer;
Look for drying time, if under 20-30 minutes it is probably just paint with really bad sanding properties. Even if it mentions sandability. Best bet is automotive products from reputable brands. In EU go for Colormatic (expensive) or Presto (cheaper)
They lay on heavy, less running, but they shrink when drying. They also have estimations on the finished layer thickness

Thanks for the video. The only one I don't think I saw you hit was TTC (Tactical... Combat Miniatures?) They have a line of color primers as well. You did several I'd never heard of before because I'm from tabletop gaming. The Model Master for example. Usually I hear Tamiya for the 'model' aspect of the hobby.

Wow, thanks for the extensive testing! I think the Testors primer is good for unifying the base color when using different modeling materials like brass, plastic, and resin, but it probably falls way short in the smoothing ability that you have with Mr. Surfacer. I can get Mr. Surfacer in bottles for airbrushing, but my local store doesn't carry the spray cans. So my preferred spray can primer is Tamiya fine in grey or white. Usually white for brighter paints and grey for darker paints. I use Vallejo paints, but have never seen the primer. I would like to try it, now that I've seen your test.

I have received very good results with the Brite Touch line of primers on plastic models. But I have noticed that they need to be well-shaken and at a warm temperature. The finish is smooth and sucks down nice into detail. I've only noticed Rex's results when the can isn't shaken thoroughly. Plus, the price is great. I've begun decanting it into my airbrush for finer control.

The Duplicolor lacquer primer I use (they have many - lots "acrylic/lacquer) has a "fan cap" on the nozzle. I use "Hot Rod Black" - true lacquer, sandable and fillable. Little scratches go away instantly. Approved by YTube uber guru Paul Budzig.

I have been practicing on the convex side of spoons and not learning anything about coverage over recessed and raised panel lines. Should I search out that railroad model brick and line plastic sheets you show in this video or is there a technique I could use on the spoons? I was thinking about just using my knife and scoring the spoons but haven't tried it yet. I can't express how much I appreciate your time and money spent to do this review for our sake.     I don't know if the NEWER KRYLON UNIVERSAL BONDING PRIMER was out on the market at the time of this video;
There has BEEN just in the last 2 years( that I know of) a NEW product from Krylon called-----"KRYLON UNIVERSAL BONDING PRIMER" -- important NOTE: it DOES NOT IN ANY WAY say "fusion" , it has not been RELATED in any way to EITHER of the Krylon priming products you tested!
I have used what I will call the "new" Krylon universal primer" and it is SO MUCH BETTER than most of the primers you tested, personally tested some of the same primers you tested - it is so much better than the Vallejo and the Tamiya-- I am sure that is a surprise and it destroys the - Rustoleum! I did my tests on plastic and wood!
Thee DRAW BACK in the comparison -- it does spray in large volume and you need to be farther away when spraying.
I don't know if you feel it a necessity to test the newer NON fusion related Krylon Universal bonding primer- but I do think it would be a much more fair comparison!

Dear Barbatos. I recently discovered "all4one" from Molotow. It's said you can use it in an airbrush as well.
I know it's a bit expensive in the US (30$ for 180ml refill or 8$ for 30ml). But where I live they are on the same price level as creatix and cheaper than Tamiya. If you get the chance to try them in your airbrush it would be awesome. Since I can't find any references or reviews of this paint for airbrush.
You can find the seller for US on the page www.molotow.com

You didn’t try it but duplicolor adhesion promoter. It changed my modeling life. Work in automotive and it’s for vinyl body panels mostly (stuff paint doesn’t generally like to bond to), and it’s a blast to use on models. It’s clear so it’s kinda weird to work with.

Loved the tamiya fine primer! I used to use a spray can primer for cars and it tends to become too thick (fills imperfections well but i don't need to all the time). After using tamiya fine primer my end results became much better.
Granted i can't fill imperfections anymore. Will just have to get a different solution for that now since i don't need it all the time.

There are so many versions of said products that it is confusing. I just want to buy the exact one in your video. You know what the actual best rattlecan primer is for priming plastic and resin kits? The cheapest cans of regular flat spraypaint at your local Walmart or Target. Not kidding at all. They stick just as well as a primer, and can be painted over just as well as a primer. And at less than $2 a can you have more money for models and kits.
The idea you need an actual primer for plastic and resin models is like a disease that people really need to fight off. So much money wasted on unnecessary expense.

Excellent video. I find that so long as a plastic surface is free of cosmetic defects, the best primer is none at all. Just a spray of adhesion promotor, and then topcoats. I've had great luck with Duplicolor adhesion promoter in the aerosol can. Bulldog (harder to find unless you go to an auto body supplier) works great, too, but ONLY if you spray with your own spray equipment. Their aerosol cans are no good, spitting and sputtering globs of the stuff.
Overall, for a higher-build primer, I like Rust-Oleum grey. Never noticed any significant difference between the "automotive" one and the regular. It's always advisable to stick with the same brand of paint products for all coats, but I've never had a problem going over it with Krylon or Duplicolor top coats.

Did you know the nozzle on the dupli-color can that you liked is adjustable from vertical fan to horizontal fan just twist the nozzle insert

my favorite combo is Rust-Oleum 2-N-1 Fill and Sand Primer then prim over with Krylon automotive 2 in 1 primer for mixed material's like resin and plastic . strangely enough it does help with weak points on some thin model attachments

Krylon gloss clear coat is weird too. It nearly ruined a gundam I used it on

out here on the west coast I use a primer that I buy at my local hardware store called Touch Tone. It comes in light and dark gray, black and red. I spray all my paints over it and never have had a problem.

Wow we don't have that here on the east coast. Plus you get red and black which is a bonus 👍

Dude, I really appreciate the work you've put into this vid. Most of the hobby spray primers aren't available where I'm from, so I wasn't sure which auto brand to use for gunpla. I might be able to snatch one of the krylon colormaster or Rust-Oleum painter's touch.

Question about Mr Surfacer: I love the stuff, but I get the little pot and mix it for airbrushing. However, I’d love to use the cans for ease of use with larger 1/48 models.
How does it work in the booth for a larger kit? My concern is accuracy and the finish. Can you get close enough without saturation? Can you back off without making a huge mess or affecting the finish?
    Thanks in advance!

I wonder how well the Rust-Oleum brand paint airbrushes on plastic model parts/Gundam parts. If properly thinned out and shot through a high quality hobby airbrush;using a 5 size needle,I wonder if Rust-Oleum paint can be better applied via dual action airbrush instead of just hosing kit parts down with a spray can;as you don't have any control over how much paint comes out, onto plastic kit parts.Testing how well a can of Rust-Oleum paint;can be airbrushed onto plastic kit parts, would make an excellent video.

I will be doing that in my primer airbrush test. It's going to be another big test just focusing on airbrushing instead of spray cans.

I had goodluck with Rustoleum Universal Bonding Primer for my Gundams. Just need at least 10 to 12 inches distance when spraying. The key is light coats.

How are you going to give them equal amounts of adequate shaking? When some might have sat on a shelf longer than others, Rust-Oleum and krylon have some awesome coatings out of a rattle can nowadays that's all I know and I haven't seen this yet.

I have a question, for the painter toucher primer I bought 2 can white and grey. The white came out really good and smooth, but the grey came out grainy and look really rough.
Is it because grey primer alway rough or do you think the can is too old?

Warm the can up and shark for like 10 minutes and it may come out better

    Hi there.
Thanks for this and all your videos.
Is there a reason why so many airbrush folks still go for canned primer and sealer instead of airbrushing those?
    Thanks!
    Timo
