These old Atkinson are among bad ass heavy haulage trucks ever made . I remember living in Jamaica as a kid & watched one fully loaded with Sugar Cane pulling a Leyland River also hauling Sugar Cane that had broken down up a hill . Back in these days, Sugar Cane haulers never left another stranded.

We had a brilliant day thanks Richard you did her proud.

Truck is a credit to you. Shame all the British truck makers have gone. When I was a kid growing up in the late 60s/70s I lived just up the road from the AEC factory near Southall. I remember seeing what must have been test lorries driving around with no body on, just the cab.

That bit of road coming out of hull towards beginning of the 63 I travel that way on a regular basis when I’m on my way back across the Pennines to Manchester from National avenue in hull. Granted not in a lovely old girl like that but in my companies Mercedes actros. All the creature comforts but no character like the Atki !

hi great video. as an ex AEC ltd employee we use to fit a Rolls Royce 220bhp to the Marathon if the customer wanted it. i think a few went to BLMC as car transporters, the g/box was a Fuller road ranger. great days there, the engines were painted in green by RR. personly i think they were underpowered. it worked better with the AEC TL12

Great video, Rich! Don't know if you twigged it, but the Borderer at 3:17 (RHE 315M) later went on to a life in general haulage with Lorian Transpor of Trafford Park, gaining a tag axle along the way. It was later refurbished by one of their drivers but I haven't heard anything of it for a long time. P.S. I listened to this through my studio headphones, and that motor sounds superb! I was so tempted by it at Kev Dennis' sale in 1997, but I already several on the go. It went to a better home than I would have given it, as I wouldn't have appreciated its history the same as subsequent owners clearly have.

This vehicle on mines rescue was manned all year round. We did 7 12 hr days and 7 12 hr nights on a rota basis. I was the only one to take it to the Boulby potash mine north of Whitby when it was measured up for the concrete anchor pad.
The generator was on the back of a Leyland Hippo, it was so slow it's a wonder that it ever got to a pit.

I miss the sound of my roller, such a bark. I find a rolls is well suited in front of a roadranger, Cummins takes too long for a quick upshift you need a dip on the clutch brake or Jakes to slow it. Never driven a Gardner roadranger but on a David brown I'm pretty sure I could have a nap between gears.

Dunlop Maxaret Anti-Skid systems were fitted to RAF Fast Jets of the time, most were hydraulic but Buccaneer had an electrical version installed. They had a rubber wheel that ran on a knurled ring attached to the wheel, compared left to right and took airspeed into account to regulate brake pressure at the wheel.

I was lucky enough to have an Atkinson Borderer with a Gardiner 180 working for Alpha Bulk Liquids; a tremendous vehicle often working at 34 tons (over legal limit) carrying gas oil. Engine would pull away on a 1:3 in third (out of 6) gear, this because linkage was worn out and slapping it over would knock against the engine cover...never needed to rev over 2000 rpm. Incidentally the "dish" rear of its' tank featured in
"Withnail and I" filmed during their drive south in torrential rain.
