Having grown up in the UK during the 70s and 80s it was a unique period of time when creatively experimental music would actually hit the charts. However, I would argue that 66-69 (say, from Revolver to Trout Mask Replica) was a greater shift in what was acceptable in popular music, seeded by Coltrane, Coleman and co a little earlier.
Amazing to hear this again. Before today, the last time I heard it was between 10pm and midnight on 13th December 1978. I was back at my parents' after my first term at university, working as a Christmas relief postman. Clearly, something extraordinary was going on in this session. I've been looking for a copy ever since. Thanks for posting!
I had a similar experience - I had a C90 tape of some of this, I was always ready to hit ‘record’ - but like so many of those treasured tapes, it was destined for warpage and landfill. Some of the stuff he played back then sounded like it was being broadcast from Mars, particularly at 11:30 pm. I wasn’t even a teen but I was precocious and I still have my vinyl copy of the second Scritti ep (with Hegemony, Messthetics etc) and Songs to Remember: much played so zero monetary value but greatly treasured, as are wonderful internet sources like this one.
If you grew up on the spiky sound of the end of the seventies stuff it's so good to hear this again... I think these guys must have listened to a lot of Beefheart in their youth...
I kind of hear Beefheart too. Magic Band Dub, that’s what this sounds like to me, but with Green’s choirboy rather than Don’s howl’n’growl. And the Slits, definitely. Oh and the Desperate Bicycles were a stated influence too I think.
Thank you so much for this! I've loved Scritti Politti since the early 80s, and am only now aware of its existence. Would I be correct in thinking, because of the audible tape flutter, that this is from a personal cassette recording, rather than a vinyl EP?
Yes...it''s from a digitised cassette recording...although the individual tracks uploaded to the Vibracobra23 Redux channel are recorded from repeats on HQ digital radio broadcasts...so should be better quality
Always tell my students that the period between 1977 and 1982 is the most influential period in British 'pop' music ever. This is further proof.
Yeah I'm sure they believe you.

I would change those years to 1963-1974 to begin with the beat groups and include the golden age of progressive rock. :) Bring on the flames!
Another top band from back in the day. Memories.

Its hard to think that they would later record The Word Girl and Wood Beez.
A great band. Enjoyed that session at broadcast and also now!

floydy opz Green has stated in interviews that Beefheart was an influence when he was younger.
@@DeejvilleTV AND you can hear Robert Wyatt and PiL also..even though he was a big fan of Henry Cow-like This Heat/Etron Fou and Mark E Smith also!

Amazing--sound like a cross between Pere Ubu and Cabaret Voltaire.

This stuff is better than their song "Perfect Way" from 1985
Wow!
Green in his experimental heyday - Furiously cool
