George Lucas created Jar Jar for his kids, and he was based on Goofy (you know, the Disney character). I found it impossible to dislike Jar Jar once I learned that.
George Lucas tried something new in the prequels, people hated it. Disney tried to stick closely to the original trilogy, people still hated it. If there's one thing filmmakers can learn here, it's that you can never please old whiny nerds with their nostalgia glasses on. It's just something that will never happen.
