Number 6, Shawn "Clown" Crahan wanted this song to be the last track in the album because he wanted the line "I haven't smiled in years!" to be the last thing people heard from the album. Great reaction btw

Everyone saying iowa vocal will never comeback, but production and obviously anger and the young alcoholic Corey did his most remarkable vocals back in 2001, but right now hes too similiar, like you said he gave us everything in this song. Corey is an absolutely beast. Hope i can see them in november in Lima

His vocals are actually SO much stronger & healthier than they were on Iowa. Iowa was a drug & alcohol fueled rage that gave it that heaviness and while I love Iowa I'm thrilled they're in a healthier place. If they had kept going with the Iowa era Corey was headed for an overdose or suicide and while he considers himself replaceable, his vocals just can't be.

Thank you!! I really appreciate your take on this song. I don't normally hang with something that heavy, but the lyrics have me hooked. I've suffered from depression for almost 30 years, and I can relate to his rage. Unless I put on that "fake smile" I was nothing but a freak to those who didn't know what depression and addiction was. I only wanted to be treated like a normal guy, just like Corey Taylor rages about during this genius of a song. Depression knows depression, and Corey has struggled just as I have.
It's been a while since I've commented on your videos, but I had to this time. I'm an atheist, and I agree with practically everything you said. Unity! One love!

I remember reading an article a while back where Corey said he was going to be writing a lot about his depression that he went through on this album.

The line with the smile, is how everyone smiling in the photos, but if you are ghost, trapped and betrayed, you didn't smiled for years. You want vengeance, but you won't tell your story, but you will appear somehow.
Some of the lyrics i feel are towards Corey's ex wife hes engaged now but he went through dark times with that divorce

I’m pretty sure that this song is about his second ex wife, Taylor divorced her around 2016/17, and spiralled into a really bad depression
(I’m taking that from interviews from him). Thankfully he’s met Alicia Dove, who seems AMAZING and everyone is hopefully back on track.
Also I think I remember on Alicia’s twitter page her talking about Solway Firth(meaning the lyrics were written and demoed, maybe even mastered)before the whole lawsuit, so that could be a pointer too.

"While I was learning to live, we all were living a lie" I really like this line. My interpretation is most likely completely different from what Corey meant by it, but i like to think of it this way: Most people are fakes and are not honest, they go with the flow. They don't show themselves for what they are but for what they pretend to be. ( living a lie) While some people are actually trying to find their true purpose in life. They are not conformists and don't follow the crowd. (They learn to live). But they are not compatible with today's society. In order to live you have to live the lie.
Damn, there's is some powerful and somewhat poignant lyrics in both new songs so far. Both for them and us. All wrapped up in crazy drums, lyrics and vocals! Bring on the rest of the album!

I think that the reason for the title being Solway Firth referring to the photo of something that isn’t supposed to be there is Corey expressing regret of creating memories with someone and putting so much into his relationship with this person only for it to disintegrate and feeling emotionally drained with the futility of all effort he put in.
When he says "While I was learning to live, you taught me how to die. I guess I got what I wanted" I think about how we feel after going through many trials and struggles. We eventually get to a point where we don't want to live anymore and just want to die. Since we are taught how to die, we are essentially getting what we want because we don't want to live anyway.
A third “what have you done” with the deeper growl at the end would of sounded SICK !!!

I like it. I also hear a little similarity of the devil in I guitar work in it.
I personally read into the song being about toxic family who think you are the problem putting you down and then being surprised when you snap which if you listen to Iowa is a big theme of Corey's music.
It's about his relationship with his ex wife. The whole album is about relationships.

Furthermore sounds like/from what I've heard is about primarily his marriage with his ex wife because I was at knotfest 2016 which was right around the time they broke up. Basically it was the first show where I didn't see (Stephanie) his ex-wife and it was brutal. It was the live performance of Iowa and corey still had a broken neck healing from a surgery thus why he was wearing a neck brace but he still went above and beyond, headbanged and screamed until he lost his voice and threw up all over the stage, it was awesome and raw emotion like this song.

I think because he let go of what happened to him as a child he can finally let of his emotions that he had bundled up and he can finally be him he can go and let out all the stuff this song definitely has rage and sadness and hatred and greef i listed to this song 16 times he is pissed off and sad and the lyrics are pretty strong and pretty insane so yes he is letting his torment of years of keeping what happened a secret and now its out

Corey is extremely intelligent , people tend to go into this deep meaning of every verse. I mean he’s putting it out there. I guess it’s the way he says it and some people just can’t comprehend it on that level.

THIS JUST CLICKED FOR ME: The song is about Corey's divorce and his wife is the girl in mysterious Solway Firth Spaceman photo. The unexplainable one is the situation hes in post divorce, but its also a nod to the mysterious photo. The rest of the lyrics are pretty much self explanatory through that context.

If it makes you happy; first of all this channel reviews all kinds of rock music which includes prog and experimental which are my cup of tea. Now I would argue that not all heavy music (including metal) is about self struggle and anger. Take Tool for example, they have hard songs that may have silly, funny but mostly insightful lyrics. Lastly, its a slipknot song. There's history here so i gotta take a listen. Have a good one bro.
