Troubleshooting Hot Water Problems with the Truma Water Heater in the Airstream Basecamp

- We went on our first camping trip of the season and had intermittent hot water. The hot water🚰would run for 1-2 seconds, then cold water for 5-10 seconds. Once home, we did some research and realized our water valves were not turned correctly after we de-winterized the Basecamp.
With many people experiencing different issues with the Truma system, we wanted to share some tips on how to problem-solve the most common errors. To ensure consistent hot water, we recommend checking the water valves, confirming the Truma unit is plugged into the electrical outlet, turning the Truma control panel on to the proper heat setting, and setting the energy source (gas, electric, or combination).
Please let us know if you have any questions or tell us some issues you've run into with the Truma water heater in your Airstream.

Thank you so much! I don't know why it's so hard for RV manufacturers to create a user guide that's helpful! This was much better than anything I found in the manual! Happy trails to you!.😁
I’m so glad this video was helpful! We got frustrated unable to find something easy, so thought we’d share with others. Hope this helped fix whatever issues you were having.
Truma/airstream should pay you for this video. It was excellent and I really appreciate it.
Thanks for such positive feedback and for watching!
Thanks for the video. I was searching for something that would show me the valve settings for winterization bypassing. This did the trick, albeit in reverse. Thanks again!
You are very welcome! We will do a winterization video a little later this year. But feel free to ask questions, if you have any.
Thanks so much, Saved me a huge head ache.
Glad this worked for you! Safe travels.
Nice video. Very informative and interesting:)
Thank you!
Very , very helpful
Thanks!
Thank you for this valuable information. We have the same problem. One question in regards to the three values you reference, how do you turn the valves if they need to be turned? I tried to hand turn two of them and they won’t budge. What are we doing wrong?
I hand turned them. I can’t remember which way, but you might be able to tell in the video. I believe all of my shots were from the aisle. (Sorry, we no longer have the trailer so I can’t check it). Some were a little tight/difficult, but it should all be by hand.
I’ve had mine since the fall of 2017 and could not figure this out. I will try this.
Hope it helps!
Thank you .. great video
Thanks for watching!
Wow!!! Didn’t know you knew how to do all that!!!!
It took some research to figure it all out.
Thanks to you and this video I was able to troubleshoot the Truma in my Basecamp and get it working. I have HOT water!!!
Thanks for this video. We just got our Basecamp this past weekend and I had a look in there and nearly lost my mind.
On a troubleshooting note, have you had issues with temperature control while showering? My situation: turn on the hot water valve, get hot water out the shower head, mix cold to my comfort, wet myself down and then flip the shower head switch. First off the shower head dribbles like crazy. But my big issue is when I flip the switch on again after a minute or two, the water is freezing. Then I’m fumbling around turning off the cold, waiting for hot, then blending again, all the while soap running down into my eyes! Do you experience this? Did you find a solution?
Thanks for watching! Oh goodness, we never actually used the shower in the Basecamp. But, I will do my best to answer your questions.
If you have an on-demand/tankless hot water system (found in newer model Basecamps), then it will do what you are experiencing. From my understanding, the water cools in the pipes while it's on hold and if water isn't flowing the on-demand system isn't making hot water, per se. On-demand systems require a minimum amount of water flow to keep the burner on. Some people recommend the Showermiser to recirculate hot water showermiser.com/rv/ while the shower is paused. I have seen others install a a Kess Shower Valve (a.co/d/cTg2biF) where the shower hose meets the wall, you can then keep the temperature setting where it is and control the flow of the water with that valve.
If you have a normal hot water tank, I would check the valves to make sure they are turned correctly. If it only happens when you shower, it could be similar to above - that while the shower is paused, the water is cooling and once you unpause the shower, the hot water has to get from the tank to the shower head, thus experiencing the burst of ice cold water.
As far as the shower head, others have recommended installing a new shower head (people seem to like this one better ETL Oxygenics 26488 BodySpa RV Handheld Shower a.co/d/6v6Jv1A).
I hope this helps! Please let us know what you find out.
@@CajunMile hey, thanks! I wasn’t sure if you’d reply on an old video. I appreciate that. 🙏 🤙
It’s the Truma combi in our BC, so my understanding is that there’s a tankful of water that gets heated via the furnace. Some fabulous magic going in there. The system is so wonderfully quiet. It was so shocking for the water to get so cold so fast. But that’s a good point you raise. Since the valve dribbles badly, the flow rate might be low enough that the hot water stops flowing and the line gets replaced with cold water. 🤷♂️ some more experimenting to do. I’ve already got one of those KES valve in my shopping cart along with a bunch of other little things. I’ll have to wait now until spring as we just put in storage for the winter.
Thanks again. I’ll let you know what we figure out in the spring.
No problem. Happy to help. 😊
Best of luck in the spring. We are about to winterize ours this weekend.
Thanks so very much!!!!!!
You're most welcome. Glad we could help.
So helpful!!!!!
Thank you!
Thanks! Just picked up a Winnebago and the knuckleheads didn’t turn back the winterization valve under the bed when they turned it over to me. Had to take a cold shower 😢
Oh no! Hope this video helped so you can have hot water going forward
