- After using the AquaGo water heater unit for a few months we thought we would share our thoughts and experience using the unit.

The Aquago is a hybrid on demand water heater for your RV. The water heater only heats the water you use but has the added advantage over standard on demand units of having a small tank to mix and pre heat the water. We found this technology works very well to minimize temperature spikes and provide consistent hot water quickly.
Overall we found using the AquaGo to be a very pleasant experience. It operation is very similar to a conventional water heater with the exception that the water does not get scalding hot. We save lots of propane with this unit and love not having to wait for water to heat up.

We recently (last month) had our Girrard Tankless water heater swapped out with the Truma Comfort. We are getting very similar experience that you are. We have a Truma in our Airstream trailer. I agree with all your points about the water temperature delivered for various scenarios. While I would like the water to be a little hotter for washing dishes its more than adequate for the shower as I have to mix cold water once it gets up to the 120F. I will run water into a fry pan that needs to soak and that gets the hot water to the sink. Then fill the sink with the hot water.The setting dial will flash after you run through so many gallons. This is the signal to decalcify. When we started our full time journey I decided to get a water softener bottle so I run all my water into the tank or city water connection through our On the Go water softener. Truma recommends decalcification 4 times a year if your water source is hard but with the water softener its once a year. The water out west is often very hard. The decalcification tablets are $20. I've decalcified our Truma once and it takes 3 hours. Best to be on a sewer hookup as you have to run water through all the faucets to clear out the pink water. I guess the biggest con is the price compared to the standard 6 gallon water heater probably a little over 2x the price plus installation but you will make up the price saving propane eventually. For weekend warriors its probably not worth it but for full timing we really enjoy its benefits.

Specialopsdave what would be the point to heat water that’s already hot ?? If it were to heat water that’s already hot but even more it would be called superheating the water; just go to Home Depot and search. You won’t find any hot water heaters...
Spot on and Awesome review! Lots of work went into this review. We saw this product and put it on our wish list I believe in 2015 but we really didn't want to spend that kind of $$ when we had a perfectly working propane/electric hot water heater. right? Well, we were at Quartsite at Xscaper's in 2016. We heard a loud sound outside and found out that it was our hot water heater blew with water running out and thankfully no fire! This maintenance/upgrade was one we were excited about. WE LOVE IT. It's the BEST thing we have added to our RV. Everything you said will be so helpful for those looking into purchasing one. We never thought of leaving it on "comfort mode" while boondocking~ great idea! we will be trying it out. Thanks and keep up the great work!

Tom, you are also an engineer, therefore you will understand this better than most. Because there is no check valve on the hot and the cold water lines at the mixing valve, when you turn off the mixed water at the shower head, the water is allowed to back flow into one or the other of the two lines coming into the mixing valve. When you turn the mixed water valve back on, the line that allowed back flow will not be delivering the temperature it had under the flowing conditions. A campground owner asked about the same thing in his coin operated showers except the water did not come on cold but extremely hot. I told him to have his plumber install check valves on the lines right at the mixing valve and he said that it fixed the problem. Be glad your problem was cold water rather than dangerous scalding hot water like he had.

Brenda, My six gallon water heater was adequate for me and my late wife. I would get up in the morning, take a shower, dry off, and dress in the bath room. By the time I came out, the hot water heater was ready for the next shower. My wife would go in, take her shower, and dry off while I was preparing breakfast and coffee. We never ran it out of hot water. She did not have long hair; therefore we did not take extensive showers like it would take to wash hair as long as yours. The main problem with most on demand hot water heaters is that you have to have the hot water valve wide open to keep it heating water. As soon as they detect a reduction in the hot water flow rate, they turn off the heater. Also, many have found that they get along OK if they are hooked up to campground water of at least fifty pounds of pressure. But, when they are running on the water tank and pump in the RV, it does not provide enough flow rate to turn on the heater. The Truma seems to have overcome these problems. I would say to buy the Truma and both of these problems will be solved. If you boondock, you will want to be watching how much you are draining your fresh water tank and how much you are filling your gray water tank with each shower, or at least each shampoo. The water being a different temperature when you turn it off and back on at the shower head is not caused by the water heater. That is caused by physics at the point of hot and cold water mixture. This is solved by the addition of check valves on both the hot and cold lines at the point of mixture. I hope this is helpful.
I Have heard of that issue, I have also heard the pressure drop and leaking valves are to prevent that from happening in RV's (which results in a cold blast)

I have heard many good things about the truma aquago. So I thought I would try and figure out the different versions of the aquago on their site. Huge site, many products, poor navigation, and even the brochure does little to tell you the differences except for power consumption numbers. Thankfully, I think I figured it out but mostly from your video,

Tom, see the shower faucet video on UA-cam Kuhl Odyssey. It has a temperature setting. Then you just adjust flow at a set temp and there's no crossover flow issue. Amazon has them under $50. I have one and love it. Another mod I made is from his hot water bypass back to the fresh water tank. Love that one too.

I've read all the replies up to this point in time B4 composing the following:
You should be considered better Ambassadors of Truma products, than Truma itself. You've done a better job explaining the features of different models than Truma itself.
You could have done a better job explaining that the purchase price includes INSTALLATION; an end-user can't buy a unit & install it themselves. NO EXCEPTIONS. Installing a water heater involves electricity & propane; if things aren't done exactly right the unit could cause an explosion. I have no doubt the legal profession would figure out a way to sue Truma if anything went wrong because an end-user messed up.
And I just subscribed.
Depends what dealer you call, some years ago some would sell direct to you others wouldn't. I just started calling around. There is no more dangers than installing your own fridge, furnace or water heater. Just follow the safety guidelines of the units manuals.

Appreciate the information on the Truma water heater. I am wondering, though, what kind of chairs are both of you sitting in? They look comfortable and my wife and I are searching for an alternative to the jackknife sofa in our bump-out.
I couldn't tell ya the brand, they have been in my family since the early 90's and still holding up great! They are leather but the headrests wore away so we covered them with a canvas.
What does it mean when the controller light flashes instead of being solid light?
This is exactly the product I had hoped existed, instant hot water units waste about a Litre of water before you actually get hot water, thats about 20L wasted a week. A little buffer tank seems like the perfect compromise.
You need a check valve in the cold water line to your shower and that will stop that cold blast.

You put together a good looking video. My question and biggest concern is how "long" is long that you talk about when taking a shower? Our 5er has a couple of other appliances that will also use Hot water, and I am concerned as to the ability of this unit to supply ample Hot water to a Dishwasher and a Wash Machine either separately or together. The hot water is endless, If i remember It is sized to run two faucets at full flow at 120F so it shouldent be a problem. We frequently wash dishes and shower at the same time without problems. We still love this water heater!

Why does the power switch have two directions, up or down, for power on? Any difference?
I spent January and February in Florida. I arrived with one thirty pound propane tank full and one empty. I filled the empty propane tank and turned it off so that the RV was drawing only from one propane tank. I turned on my tank type hot water heater, took a shower every day and did dishes as needed. I left the hot water heater on twenty-four, seven. I cooked on the propane stove, baked in the propane oven, but did not use the furnace. (Electricity was flat monthly rate.) That propane tank was still feeling full when I hit the road leaving Florida. I don’t understand people who turn off their RV hot water heater if they are not washing dishes or showering. It uses so little propane that it is certainly not worth the wait for the hot water heater to bring the water up to temperature.

On your LPG Tank Check display it shows the tank in a verticle orientation. Will it work if the tank under the RV is in the horizintal orientation?

This unit is a high tech solution for a low tech problem. The reason the tank type units water is over 140 degree's is that water that hot will not allow diseases to propagate in the heater tank. Think Legionnaires disease, it's to protect your health. You can install like I did a tempering valve to deliver 90 to120 degree water(It's adjustable) throughout your trailer plus it's a anti-scalding solution. Nice review though.

Are you asking about the tempering valve if so the cost of it was less than $30.00 when I installed it 10 years ago. I installed it behind the water heater you have to cut and crimp the PEX lines to install it.
That's a nice explanation of why tank style heaters are over 140 degrees, but it doesn't address the fact that this gives instant hot water, and gives limitless amounts of said hot water. Anti-scalding is a minor bonus, it's not the main solution here. The main solution here is hot water on demand, and if you're hooked up to shore water, you can shower until your propane tank runs dry.

Hey guys, where do you live and where do you usually travel? I really want one of those heaters but I live in Alaska and everybody tells me they don’t do well up here because the water comes in very cold (about 37°F) even in the summer. Have you traveled to cold places? How does your heater work in those conditions?
Check out our go north series, we used one in Alaska without problem. I have heard other brands can't get up to temp with the cold water but we have never had a problem with the aquago.

Truma has a unit that is a furnace and a water heater, but aftermarket installs of these units are hard. Its not this unit though its called a Combi

@@azclaimjumper We actually do have a stand alone heater now that's called the Vario Heat. But it's another one that's not available aftermarket at the moment but where trying to see if there's a way to create a kit to make it aftermarketable.

Hello again kids ... I need you're an answer as quickly as possible..... Please ...please...please....I'm am away from my unit for the next few weeks with temps forecasted in the teens for the next week for my units location. Sadly I deadbolted the touchpad entry door. Therefore nobody can get into my DRV Houston to release the pressure. Is it possible to pull the drain valve down with the lines pressurized with the water suppy cut off? With the water pump and supply turned off, will loosening the water hose be enough to release the pressure in the units waterlines? Or is there some sort of check value on the city supply line preventing water back flow (which makes sense given the water pump doesn't force water out of the city inlet)?
The dealership installed the basic model then sent the upgrade kit but has not sent someone to install it yet. The gas and electric is on, but from what I believe the base Truma Aquago model does not prevent freezing by maintaining a minimum temp. I've tested the system by turning the system off then running the water. No hot water. Which means the 1 liter of water does not get heated until the tap is turned on.

Unfortunately Truma does not sell to customers to install themselves, I would have done that if I could. Installed at Truma a unit like ours runs 1200-1300,

@@Milesco yeah sorry do not buy these....they have issues...plus the cost...you can easily save yourself tons of money retro fitting a small electric water heater....im a rv tech and have done then before and saved customers lots of money
Great info. If you had an all electric coach would you need to add a propane tank, since it only runs on propane?
That is correct an electric on demand unit would require 60A @ 240 to operate, propane is really the only way to go for an on demand RV unit.
How well does the unit operate at high altitude, say above 5500 feet or even above 9000 feet?
We were around 8000 feet for two months this summer and did not notice any preformance loss. The unit has a fully variable boiler gas and air controls based on water temp so it probably compensates fine.

Soooo, how much you pay for the Girard & how much time & money did you spend to install it + how much did you spend to get someone to fix what you did wrong?
We have a Truma aquaGo in our 2018 holiday rambler 36 motor home. We have used the motor home maybe 40 Days max, usually on weekend trips. Unit is very unreliable, very seldom does it work. Never much hot water and then for a short brief shower. Dealer has no answers except that it’s German and a pos. Suspect that unit works poorly at low campground water pressures.. 30psi.
Thats too bad. Given Truma requires their dealers install the thing, it should work perfectly or they should fix it.

The price of the new water heater (don't ask), cost of labor ($150 an hour typically) and no AC power ... just propane. Too expensive for me. Are you getting a discount or a free AquaGo? Congrats!
I saw this "ad" before buying an upper end RV that included the Truma,. The Truma does not work as suggested. I called Truma telling them that it takes at least 90 seconds to get hot water to the sink. So if you are in a park with unlimited water and lots of gray water storage, you're good.

I bet you let a one hundred fifty or two hundred pound passenger ride with you without even thinking about the extra weight. I know that every pound counts when you are up against weight limits but another hundred pounds of water is not going to make a big difference. My hot water heater is rearward, behind the axles, therefore the weight there does not add to tongue weight but subtracts from it. Most RVs I have seen also have the hot water heater behind the axels. I don’t think that hundred pounds was a killer. Your fresh water, gray water, and black water tanks are much larger and will account for more of your total weight.
Every pound counts tho. That 12 gallons more fresh we can travel with without weighing any more!
Basic model is $1100 plus installation costs. It is not DIY. I am sure this paid video.
The video was thorough except for one area. Truma is German company, and as you mig ht expect, people do like this from an engineering perspective. Truma now has a quite largeqwaw2 plant in Elkhart, Indiana. The Mortons neglected to mention that if you replace your conventional 6 or 10 gallon heater with the Truma, the unit must be installed by a Truma technician (sometimes two of them). Doing this, or most any other attempted home repair, will void the warranty. As with German cars, Truma water heaters are expensive; anywhere from $1,200.00 to 1,800.00 for the unit, and about $500.00 for the installation. Except for winterization or descaling, they recommend calling the local retailer or main office to arrange for a tech to come fix the unit. Or, you must arrange to bring your rig in for repair to the unit.
at 3700 dollars its over priced
For real... I have a 6 gal tank that I installed a Hott Rod in. Running LP and electric (yes, you can run both at the same time), I have non-stop continuous 125 degree water. The Hott Rod was $99. I'll take the 42 extra pound of water over spending $3,700 to get 105 degree water when you are turning it on and off. Really... 105 degree water to wash and rinse dishes... oh hell no!!!
That price is absurd. Game killer!

It's not a tank. The Hott Rod is an electric heating element. If my memory serves me for a change, I think for my 6 gal heater it's 600 watt... and for a 12 gal it's 900 (with LP and the Hott Rod, all you need is a 6 gal). Got it on sale at (oh gawd no) Camping World for $99.00. Yeah, but I needed it bad and wasn't where I had internet service to order it on-line. But, looking at the price (if you have to replace your tank) I'm pretty sure it's still cheaper to get a standard LP heater and add the Hott Rod than it is to buy a combo 120/LP heater. And I don't think with the combo you can run both, it's an either/or deal. You simply remove the drain plug on the LP water heater and insert the heating element. Then press and stick the thermostat on the back of the tank and hook it up to 120. El-cheapo me... wired it so I could just plug it into the GFI outlet next to the sink instead of buying a switch for it. But I, like you, am doing a bit of remodeling, so I'm adding a warning light in the hallway for it as well as the LP being on. If I forgot, it would kill the batteries or waste LP. The directions were real good, and it states right in them that you can run your LP AND the Hott Rod at the same time without any danger at all. With the boost it gave me... no running out of hot water in the shower. I was hooked to water and sewer at the park so... nice and long showers. Now... I didn't run the water full blast, but I never ran out of hot and didn't have to take navy showers anymore (a 6 gal running LP only... you WILL run out of hot unless you get wet, turn the water off and wash, then turn the water back on to rinse). And, when I ran out of LP (oops) just the Hott Rod alone gave me hot water if I was careful about the flow. If you are going full solar, there are also 12-48 volt DC heating elements I saw on-line at several of the solar companies, but with over 2200 watts on the roof and 900 amp/hrs in batteries, I run my Hott Rod off the inverter if I'm boondocking. Oh, and if you're going solar, I found small 265 watt panels on-line. With a 34 foot tank of an RV, I have three lengthwise on each side in front of the bathroom skylight with room to walk between to clean them, and three more behind it. And, if you're thinking AC, forget the RV type. They haven't change the design since the early 60's. They draw a massive 14 amps :( I have a 12,000 BTU mini-split in the front and a 9,000 BTU in the bedroom. The front one draws a max of 6.7 Amps at full power, and almost always less and the rear one even less than that. Can run the rear all night off solar batteries. Hope this helps you out, and good luck with the remodel. Old RV's of any kind are much better built than the new crap. And, if you need more info... just reply again.
Y'all water too much money on this water heater...anyone who buys it does..way overpriced for sure... everybody buys into the latest do called greatest thing now...I've done retro fit tankless installs on rv's and it costs so much less than these installed

In my opinion...not worth the price at all...not even close. You could even install a instahot system that is a 3rd of the price and get the same results. This truma system is not designed for the majority of rv'ers...a ton of people that live in there rv cant afford this or cant justify the cost. I understand that you have to be loyal to a company that is paying you for a good review of there product....thats your hustle i applaud that..but the population has a huge problem with cost and trouble with these
The only good thing this unit has that it fits in the old water heaters place. I installed much superior units for half the price but I had to mount it outside at the back of the RV.
