Why Toll Road Transponders Are So Confusing (and Getting Worse)
Переглядів 988Місяць тому
Over the past 10 years we have collected transponders from several states. When we hit the road, we thought we should need to pick up a Sun Pass from Florida and the Express Toll, EZ Tag and IPass would take care of the rest. This week, while driving toll roads in Texas, we had a moment of clarity and found out that the Sunpass wasn't going to work on the TXTag roads and it was possible that ne...

    • @CajunMile
      @CajunMile 2 дні тому

      America the Beautiful really is only good to access National parks, forests, etc. we had to purchase additional state park passes because they required it to stay in their campgrounds. Our CO state park pass expired in Sept 2024. We didn’t renew it because we won’t be back until spring 2025. We purchase memberships when we need them. For example, when we had work done on the Airstream, we stayed in a KOA cabin, the discount we received (10%) having the membership made up for the cost based on what we were able to save. That’s how we calculate whether or not we purchase memberships. Typically KOA and GoodSam we only purchase if we know we are going to use them, then let them expire at the end of the 12-month period. Harvest Hosts we use on long travel days. We don’t unhook, and typically stay at a quick overnight only to get up the next day and go to our next stop. We like wineries, breweries and restaurants because we can get a quick bite to eat and/or drink and socialize some. We have also used HH as a supplement when parks are booked for the weekend. Our current memberships include Harvest Hosts, KOA, Good Sam, Airstream Club Int’l, and Escapees. We use ACI and Escapees for rallies and our mail service is through Escapees, but they also offer discounts at certain parks, so that’s a bonus for us. If you have one membership, I highly recommend seeing if they have discount codes to purchase other memberships, that we you don’t pay full price and can try out those parks. We will probably let our KOA and GoodSam lapse, as we only use those occasionally. Hope this helps explain our membership rationale.

    I just bought a 24 in antimatter blue with blackout package and have been going back and forth on what cap would look best…I needed to be able to visualize what it would look like …all color…all black? I can’t believe topper sites don’t have a set up to put your model of truck and color and be able to see what different caps would look like on “your” truck ..seems like a no brainer 🤷🏼‍♂️ Your video is the closest thing I’ve found to being able to visualize what mine would actually look like so thank you! Feedback: I would insert side by side pics and at different angles of before and after. JMO Also I was about to get the carbonized grey until I ran across the antimatter blue last minute and I was sold! Thanks again

      I appreciate the request. We are a few weeks out from posting a new topper video for our f250. It’s agate black with a matching topper. When I do it, I’ll put a side by side photo in for comparison. I’m also surprised that cap manufacturers don’t do a tool like this, they don’t even have to match the trim, they could just do color and choose a color topper. Thanks for watching and commenting and for the feedback. We’re always trying to do better for the folks who watch our videos.

    tl;dr right now you can at least send back (or set aside) your I-Pass (aka E-ZPass, exact same thing aside from brand), since it's fully redundant with SunPass *PRO* (which includes E-ZPass). As far as Texas goes, well... that's in flux. Regarding all three of your other tags, here goes: 1a) Your SunPass *PRO* fully covers all E-ZPass member states; currently, those are the entire Northeast, Atlantic from ME to FL^, Great Lakes from MN to NY, plus KY and WV. (^except SC, which doesn't interoperate with anybody) 1b) Your information about E-ZPass only working in FL on that one road (Central Fla Expy) is out of date; ALL Florida facilities w/SunPass *now* also accept E-ZPass. 2) *BOTH* your SunPass *PRO* and your ExpressToll (CO) cover KS (K-Tag) and OK (PIKEPASS). 3a) *ALL THREE* of your SunPass PRO, EZTAG (Houston/HCTRA) and ExpressToll cover TollTag (Dallas) and TxTag (Austin/TXDOT) roads. 3b) Your EZTAG (Houston/HCTRA) is currently the only pass you own that will work on EZTAG roads. 3c) but HCTRA (EZTAG), as you mentioned, is absorbing TxTag. When that finally happens, your EZTAG won't cover anything not already double-covered by your ExpressToll AND SunPass PRO. 4a) Tolls in Colorado (ExpressToll) aren't currently covered by either of your other passes (until EZTAG finishes absorbing TxTag). 4b) Colorado's Northwest Parkway still only works with your ExpressToll, though that's also supposedly being fixed to also accept your EZTAG.

    • @DamnCactus
      @DamnCactus Місяць тому

      addendum about HCTRA: once EZTAG finishes absorbing TxTag, that tag will also overlap with your SunPass PRO in GA (on top of the triple-billing potential in KS and OK). Plus, your EZTAG will then become as redundant as your I-Pass currently is. When you're down to only the SunPass PRO and ExpressToll, the only states where those tags will overlap will be TX, KS and OK... so you'd want to store away the SunPass PRO in its static-resistant baggie to avoid double-billing in those. As someone who's in the exact same CO to FL boat with toll tags... happy to share my toll-tag rabbit hole info with you. Helping someone makes it all feel slightly less of a giant waste of time...

    • @CajunMile
      @CajunMile Місяць тому

      Wow! Do you work for one of the tolling agencies? We have been trying to get comprehensive information for a while and it all seems to be contradictory or missing on the toll agency websites. • @DamnCactus

      @@CajunMile I worked as a contractor on toll interoperability legal issues in 2018, and on the side I used to do snowbird vehicle relocations to/from Florida, the northern states and Canada... so I've been juggling toll tags for a while. Just decommissioned my K-Tag when ExpressToll finally figured things out, but I still have a FasTrak, ExpressToll, NC Quick Pass, NY E-ZPass and non-PRO SunPass... I need to get around to sending back the last two -- and once EZTAG and Colorado's Northwest Parkway figure out their ish, no overlap! (had to edit this because I somehow thought QuickPass included TX, which it doesn't)

      😁State's rights. Think about this. You are asking New York and Texas, Illinois and Florida to cooperate. It would also push the all transponders into one parameter if not just one manufacturer. One set of patients. Limited price competition for the technology of both the transponders and the transceivers.

      I think it would be awesome if that would happen. I think the tolling agencies wouldn’t like it much because there would be administrative cost passed along to them (or to the consumer). Thanks for watching and commenting. We’ll keep digging and try to find real solutions.

      Like ours in Australia. We have toll roads in all east coast states with several providers and they all are roaming. Even greediest govt with its own tag provider have to roam with everybody else, other way it will be a huge riot, no one will pay anything at all.

    Many of the buildings there were fixed up in the last couple years, after being neglected for a very long time. Attempts to sell the properties remains in the works.

    So we just passed you guys on the road today on our way back to Katy, Texas. Saw your UA-cam channel and decided to check it out being a fellow Cajun. What’s with the red numbers on the back of airstreams? Saw yours and a couple others on the rd and was generous curious.

      Hello and thanks for checking out our channel! The red numbers are our membership numbers for Airstream Club International. Also known as Big Red Numbers, they help identify your Airstream when in large groups, like at rallies. Safe travels.

    I volunteer with raptors too and the comment 'there is nothing wrong with her. She was stolen from the nest and kept just long enough to ruin her life' hits hard. It's so true. We have an owl in the same situation. Nothing wrong with her except she was taken by some idiot that thought it would be cool to own an owl. Spoiler alert, it's not, and by the time said idiot realized this, she had imprinted on humans and cannot be released into the wild. She will never be able to live the life she was created for and it's heartbreaking...

      @CajunMile 2 місяці тому

      It is heartbreaking! She is gorgeous and now lives in captivity because she never properly learned to live in the wild. I posted the video in hopes that it would raise awareness and maybe save a raptor’s life. They are absolutely beautiful creatures. Thanks for watching.

      I don’t off hand. It’s a master lock that is easy to get at Home Depot or Lowe’s.

    You need to look at Wanderbox. It is on the chevy or the f 600 and it is half the price and has more batteries and tank space and water storage as well.

    Wow, it looks great. I have a platinum as well in black and I really want one like this. I’ve never had a topper always a tonneau cover and I do have a bak flip now. Great video!

      Love the bakflips, we just wanted some extra space, so we did the cap. We loved the antimatter blue, but when we upgraded to the f250, we went with black.

    • @MikeyO615
      @MikeyO615 2 місяці тому

      @ I think the pros outweigh the cons of a topper. I don’t use the length of my bed anyways because it’s so short and we pull a camper and to have a topper when we camp to have the height of the cab to have all our camping stuff back there would just be great. It seems every time we go we have another yeti or more chairs and grills and dog kennels it would be awesome to not have to load that stuff in the camper and just throw it in the truck!

    • @CajunMile

      Drain the tank, but I do not think you want anti freeze inside of it. There should be a bypass when pumping the antifreeze through.
