One of those times when Aphex Twin wasn't Aphex Twin - Polygon Window hardware only cover/recreation

- A few people have requested this one - happy to oblige!
A sense of the synths and drum machines that Richard had around the time is mostly based around the '93 Future Music interview - lannerchronicle.wordpress.com...
Since the Roland R8 was used for a lot of SAW - see my Xtal video • Aphex Twin - Xtal - ha... - it makes sense that he was using it for the "updated 808 sounds" on Polygon Window too. The retuned, panned and pitch automation sort of gives it away. Also interesting that Autechre were (really obviously) using the same drum machine at the same time, which might have been a driver behind his move away from it.
The Yamaha TX81Z, DX21 and DX11 are pretty much interchangeable, and the bassline you can make on any FM synth
Sorry there's no MS20 😢
There's not much by way of sequencing, but what is sequenced is pretty unusual, particularly the discordant strings. Fun times.
Please don't forget to check out my other videos, and please do comment, like, subscribe, share, remix etc - it all boosts my ego no end.
Thanks for watching!!
Amazing work, I had no idea that was an FM synth at the start, and I've listened to this track about a billion times. This is an incredible recreation. It's amazing how little there is going on in this track; bass synth + drums + strings + mono lead + absurd amounts of delay - it's almost text book building blocks, but in the hands of a master
Right? It's mad when you break it down - the end product is way more than the sum of its parts 👍👍👍
These videos do a great deal to put in perspective just how much work these tracks take to create. Always excited to see when a new one comes out. Great job, as always!
Glad you like them!
S1 punching above it's weight again! So crazy what you can squeeze out of it at that price point... This was an awesome video, killed it.
Thanks for watching, and yep! 💯 The S1 is fantastic bang for the buck - best thing Roland have put out in ages!
Very well done Sir. I love the Polygon Window album. 😀
Thanks! Yeah - SOSW is way way up there!!
Watching your content is always a great pleasure and a great oportunity to discover new elements on familiar tracks. Thanks for your amazing work.
Thank you!
Really impressive recreation!
Thanks!
Nice one, you nailed it again.
Thanks!
Congratulations.... you're Aphex Twin now!
😂😂 Me and millions of others...
not really, i feel he didn't lie enough
@@artificalqphexian plot twist - all the audio is actually a Digitakt and Hydrasynth...
This track always sounded a bit like a boss battle theme in places. Really cool to hear all those components broken down and remade. Nice video!
Thank you! Yeah, it's an unusual track but comes apart once you spot the patterns... Duck, roll and swipe at the ankles seems to work!
Great vid as always! Keep em bleep bloops coming!
Thank you so much!!
Ouch the sound of the Waldorf! Nice video as always ;-)
🧊😎🧊 The Waldorf is pretty spectacular tbf (currently jamming some Thomas Dolby ppg things on it because I'm that kind of guy...), just maybe not for analog analog things..!
love these vids. great work as always. cheers!
Thank you!
so excited to see another video from you
Thanks! Still working on more, just takes ages!!!
Truly excellent insights... lovely work on this !
Thanks!
Pretty good, especially the synths and samples strings.
🙏😎 Thank you!
Amazing! Great work on this recreation, definitely has the vibe of the original. Pretty inspiring, thanks!
Thanks!
This is a superb job.
Thank you! 👍
Great cover and thanks the album recommendations cant beluve they passed ne by 👌☮️
Yeah! You have to start with Artificial Intelligence - it's the start of all of this!
Cheers 👍@@bleepsandboops
That FM bass sound is on so many things from 88-91…. I recently spent ages trying to work it out…..
Early Prodigy too - all over Experience 😎👍
Amazing video as always! I look forward to seeing you when you've got hundreds of thousands of subscribers and you're rubbing shoulders with IDM giants like Richard. If you keep putting out stuff as high quality as this you're going to be there in no time. Love from the US!
♥ Thanks for watching! Think I've a long way to go before I get the phone call from Warp!!!!
That's incredible!
🙏🙏 Thank you!
Ah tmz and Alesis quadraverb. My first effect processor, still have it after 30 years. I swear when I watch your videos its like you shot them at my studio lol
😂😂👍 It's that or a bunch of Bad Gear cast-offs!
@@bleepsandboops lol spot on. good work as always mate
Incredible!
♥️ Thanks!
Is the picture of Venetian Snares at the beginning intentional? Amazing recreation of polygon window though! 100% subbing.
Thanks for subscribing! And yeah... something about a peep show reference...
@@bleepsandboops aha I thought I might be missing something. Time to rewatch peep show.

Well done!
Thanks!
Nice rendition of Windowlicker in the beginning
Had to be done... 😁
the *DICE MAN*
DICE MAN 🎲🎲🎲
Sick!
💪😎 Thanks!
This Linux box has no microphone, but spookily enough, this very LP is playing right now on my CD player, (ie no physical connection whatsoever between CD player and PC) , and your video about Surfing on Sinewaves comes up while I'm doom scrolling. Thanks!
Perfect timing!! Thanks for watching!
Excellent!
Thank you!!
At 5:30 ...I hear you. I don't have an Iridium because I spent all my money on two MS-20.
STEREO MS20s HAVE ENTERED THE CHAT
bet that sounds awesome!
"You crazy son of a bitch... You did it.".
Dr. Ian Malcom reacting to your recreation.
😁👍
Incredible! 💥✊
Cheers!
Very well done sir!
Congrats on the Iridium. I bought the M. Its a modernday microwave. I think its superb.
Thanks! Big fan of the Waldorf gear - was really unsure about the Iridium compared to (say) a used Virus or even a Novation, but genuinely very happy with it! Just need to find a way to fit it into something that isn't just a sci-fi soundtrack!!
@@bleepsandboops I thought the iridium could do anything. Even speech synthesis. I felt it would be too complicated for me. I still live in the relm of single ocsilstor Junos. My kit today much the same as the 90s ha. Even got an Atari.
I specifically got the M cos I loved the microwave. I must say it hasn't disappointed. But it is complicated in itself.
Keep in keeping on mate. Your channel rocks 👍🏻
the tx81z sounds so good and is so much fun to use, but what a nightmare to program lol ive had it for years and it still confuses the hell out of me
No vintage tones without vintage menu-diving hell!!
Ate nachos and watched this. Class
Hells yeah. Now I'm hungry for nachos dammit
Rad! I'd been trying to recreate this myself on the appropriate hardware, but hadn't found a satisfactory string sample. I'm fairly certain the FM bass in the original is a lightly tweaked version of the "wood piano" patch on the dx100, with just a bit more release on op1.
Thanks! That wood piano patch gets in a lot of places - Orbital had it on a lot of tracks along with the ubiquitous Lately Bass - funny how it sounds nothing like an actual piano but ended up being used for bass all the time..!!
Insane stuff. Tri Repetae autechre next???? Dael or clipper are sublime.
Thanks! Maaaaan Clipper has the best kick drum bar nothing.. Furiously trying to find the list of what was used on what, now... 😂😂
Das is Good.
Vielen Danken!
Still sounds like the future
💪😎👍
Well done.
I reckon the strings could do with one or two lower notes then high passed.
Other than that great. The drums are the trickiest to match.
Great to hear a Quadraverb in action.
Thanks! Yeah, the QV is a great effects unit - I think people skip over them on account of the age and price but they really do add that early 90s grit to things!
Pretty well done I have to say. But about that MS20, I've owned three of them over the years, but always sold them when I was skint. Now I have a Behringer K-2 which is identical to the original, but cost less than £200. No excuse not to own one now. :)
Don't!!! Especially since there's a mk2 incoming, I'm running out of space as it is!!
@@bleepsandboops There is nothing in the mk2 except that it can be chained with other K-2's for polyphony. Other than that, they are identical.
Do u have a patreon? I wish to give u money in hopes of more vids
Surely noone would refuse money in this capitalist hellscape
🤣🤣 I don't have a Patreon, but you can buy me a beer with the thanks^^ button under the video!
PW: SOSW is the GOAT
🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏
Great job, but such an evil track in spirit - always been very hard to love.
I think that’s why I like it
@@mynewcolour it wants your soul...
I demand the Trance Mix!
😎😎👍
I've had dozens of aliases 😉
none greater than Karen Tregaskin!
How do you think they used to sequence their gear back then? …vintage sequencers are never really sought after like the vintage synths; interesting, isn’t it? 😂
I've done some other videos with an old Roland MC50, which is a floppy disk sequencer from the late 80s/early 90s but it's a real faff! Richard apparently had an Atari (fancy...)
@@bleepsandboops Benn Jordan has just done a video on this
@@artemvsprime 😂😂 perfect timing...!
A++
🤓👍👍
You can always try.
