FSOL were quite the sampling geniuses in their day. Accelerator is one of my all time favourite albums that I've rinsed to death over the years and had no idea how sample heavy it was until i watched a breakdown video on it. What a broad choice of samples too. I feel blessed to have had the 90s as my glory years.
They picked and edited some really good stuff - it all hangs together so well without feeling like an audio-collage... really wish I'd been old enough to experience it first-hand!
@JasonBoon02 not checked it out, but I know the tune. That other western style tune they did would be worth checking out too. I think all their tunes were made of pure samples if I remember right.
I'm in a band with Jack from Meat Beat Manifesto and he told me that the Radio Babylon bassline was done with a piece of toast hanging out of his mouth. He had just made some toast but was struck by inspiration so picked up the bass and recorded it straight away, food be damned. Awesome video again. I love FSOL more than I can say and this track is an absolute stonking masterpiece. So many good memories of hearing it blasting on huge sound systems while raving til dawn. (and beyond) You did an admirable job of de/reconstructing it. Makes you appreciate the original even more.
Toasty bass indeed! That's awesome 👍👍 Love fsol. So many samples, makes the deconstruction a bit tricky... Same reason I haven't tackled (say) Chems or Fatboy Slim yet... Maybe one day 😁
@@makipri he does! I doubt he’d ever get rid for it. So he can’t sell it for another 18 years at least, i told him.
@@jdrukman That sounds like a really neat photo project! Well I bet the aftermarket value for it will just get higher by the time if he can keep it serviced. All I know is Iannis Xenakis has one too and I know the guy who has done service for it.
Very Impressive! I had no idea the level of sampling that they did. This track from FSOL is one of my all time classics from the 90s. SO many good memories.
Such a great track 👍👍 I think sampling back then was a lot easier too.. more of a grey area as far as legality goes, whereas now it would cost so much in rights/permissions that it wouldn't be worth it!
Amazing, I still listen to FSOL - Lifeforms, ISDN, Dead Cities, all pretty timeless. That Babylon sample is also used to great effect by Meat Beat Manifesto's Radio Babylon, really brings the house down at a party.
No way! What the……I……..I watched this video with open mouth. Another track I love from the 90’s. How did you know where all these samples came frome? Please keep on doing what you’re doing. (And the funny video elements are nice too, haha)🙏🏼🙌🏼👌🏼
Absolutely stunning remake of one of my favourite tracks ever. About the copyright thing. Gyu Beats, who also does remakes of the classics, was struck a few times as well and resorted to uploading the tracks on Patreon where you could then hear the full versions. Maybe an idea :)
It's a shame the labels sometimes outright request the audio be removed rather than a revenue share! Patreon might be a good idea though - depends if there would be enough subscribers to make it worthwhile
Thanks! I think they're quite hot on the copyright takedowns, so everything has to be adjacent rather than directly replicated... Easier said than done when a lot of fsol was samples...! 😂
I've seen a few synth demos that try to do it but, wow... I've spent hours sat in front of the Nord, trying to get that Oberheim pad vibe 😂😂 Have you seen the Refracted live version? Goosebumps. And all Access Virus too...! 🤓
Thanks! Yeah jx3ps are awesome synthesizers from what I've seen, needs the programmer too, right? They've started getting collectible so not as cheap as you'd think!
Brilliant work here. Bit of trivia for you - the 'seagull' in the original is actually a reversed sample of Brian Dougans's EMS Synthi AKS. Obviously the gulls are cheaper!
This took me back, and is really quite impressive. I had an R-8 for a few years. I'm sure it was a great piece of kit - I just don't have an ounce of rhythmn programming skill in my being, so it was basically an expensive paperweight. I sold the R-8 and bought another drum machine (although I can't remember what it was called, or who manufactured it). Evetually, I stopped buying hardware drum machines. Far less expensive to fail upwards with software.
Thanks! I've kind of gone the other way? 😂 I spend so long in ProTools, taking a break with a 30-y/o drum machine with an LCD display is a nice change of scenery!!!
Hey I recently discovered FSOL and obivously this track and I really liked it. It's good to hear a hardware cover from you. You make covers for great tracks (from Aphex, BoC, FSOL etc.) though.

hey, sorry for the really bland question, but: How did you mount your Nord Rack into your rack, while having something on top of it (power unit?). How can the rear connectors be accessed?
The back/top of the Nord has a slight angle inwards so you get a small amount of clearance above the unit. I'm still using angled jacks for the outputs, but the midi cables and power jack fit in fine 👍
