Steve Winwood is a fuckin icon. He did this song back in the late 60s, this is him playing that same song now at age 72. It sounds almost the same. He has played with alot of big names and has had success as a session player and solo artist and along with multiple groups such as Spencer davis group, blind faith with Eric clapton, and Traffic. Check out Im a man (spencer davis group) Dr mr.Fantasy (traffic) He has also won a boat load of Grammys if that even means anything now. back then it did.

This is the third video you have reacted that he has been on. The first video was While My Guitar Weeps with Prince, Tom Petty ect. He was the guy on the organ. The second time was yesterday when you reacted to the band Traffic. Someone commented in another group that he was in before when he was only fourteen or sixteen. That person also left some suggestions.
I listened to Steve Winwood in the 80's and I had heard he was in other bands, but in those days we didn't have the internet or Spotify so access to getting music wasn't easy for some of us, such as, the cost of a CD and was the CD available.
Songs: While You See a Chance, Valerie, Higher Love, Roll With It.

You and other reactors of your era are the reason I subscribe. I am a 70 year old who grew up in what we knew was the golden era for music. So, now to see your reactions at what you missed is no surprise for us. We know that if you are a open book your awe has to surface. And it does. We being able to dust off our treasure and enjoy it once more through you is actually quite exciting dor us. Just as today with the incredible talent of a Stevie Winwood who we first encountered when he was approx 17 with Spencer Davis Group immediately was.

Steve Windwood started his brilliant career at the tender age of 15! He's a prodigy who's gone through numerous stylistic incarnations exploring the versatility of his musical tastes and talent. Steve is one of my absolute favorite artists who provided the sound score to my adolescence and beyond. There are so many excellent songs to choose from. Check out his early stuff as the lead in the band Traffic. And make sure you listen to his hits of later years. I left my heart, though, in his work with Traffic. Low Spark of High Heeled Boys, Empty Pages....and the list goes on!!

I first heard this song on the Blind Faith Album….a masterpiece and this version brings me to tears. There are no words that can express how talented Winwood is…amazing vocalist, outstanding on all instruments and also song writer par excellence. I have admired Jim since he first appeared in Spencer Davis Group as a teenager, matured through his Traffic years (which I think were his best) and continued to develop as a solo artist. How can anybody this good constantly go under the radar and not get the commercial success and idolisation he deserves is beyond me….even the great Jimi Hendrix wanted him to join his group after he jammed with him on the Electric Ladyland album. Thank you Stevie for all your albums and songs and live performances…..and if I was you Wilburn I would check out his entire back catalogue and stand by to be totally amazed.

If you want to know about all of the really great old music, you have to ask us old folks! :) Steve Winwood is simply one of the greatest, most well respected artists of our time! You owe it to yourself to explore him fully. Starting when he was in his teens with The Spencer Davis Group (I'm a Man, Gimme Some Lovin') up through his years with Traffic (just listen to it all, especially the Traffic, John Barleycorn Must Die, and Low Spark of High Heeled Boys albums) to the first "Super Group", Blind Faith with Ginger Baker Ric Gretch, and Eric Clapton (where you will find the full band recording of "Can't Find My Way Home") , and on into a very successful solo career. There are some great You Tube videos of Winwood joining Clapton at some of his "Crossroads" festivals and they are WELL WORTH your time to explore! Fantastic organist, singer, and guitar player. Absolutely one of the best! Here's one from the 2010 Crossroads festival......Eric and Stevie doing Traffic's "Dear Mr. Fantasy" Enjoy! ua-cam.com/video/ugTaPTv0eQY/v-deo.html

When you talk about a multi talented artist Steve Winwood the definition of one, on his 1980 solo album I think it was called Arc of A Diver he played every instrument on the album, but I think he likes playing the key boards the most, check out his beginnings with the Spencer Davis Group when he was 15 or 16yrs old , songs like Gimme Some Lovin and I’m a Man, oh and that was him on lead guitar on Mister Fantasy

You asked exactly the question I had myself. How could you not have heard this and other music ? - my guess is not listening (or maybe not have access) to radio. That’s definitely where I picked up my music ‘education’ and why I can sing complete songs when I never bought the record. Steve Winwood started out at the age of 14 and there are videos here on UA-cam of his performances, with Spencer Davis band, Blind Faith and just solo - he’s an icon.

  • @ianhepplewhite8334

He started in The Spencer David Group, who had about four huge hit singles in the 1960, then moved onto to forming Traffic, which he was in for many years and had various line-ups. After that he formed Blind Faith with Eric Clapton, Ginger Baker & Ric Gretch, which had a No.1 album in the USA & U.K. I believe, which included this song. I saw Steve in Traffic when I was 15 in 1968, then in his own right with supporting musicians in Oxford during the 1980s and then in Liverpool during the 1990s, and he is still around and can still sing wonderfully as you can hear. He is a multi instrumentalist and is one of the few people around that can play a peddle organ. There is a video I’ve seen with him playing a church organ, I guess in a church local to him and maybe singing a hymn. An outstanding singer, composer and musician. 👍

Lordy! I don't care what anyone sez, Stevie can sing....there is a touch of Johnny Taylor & Ray Charles. But there is simply a soul feeling. Not British rock n roll, (Deep Purple or Jethro Tull) but a soul coming from deep within. This cannot....cannot be faked. Stevie, you are a treasure.

I play and sing this song. It's played in Drop-D tuning. You just tune down the "fat" E string to "D."..The next one you should do is in this same setting; "John Barleycorn Must Die", which is an old song about 400 yrs. old, with a gazillion variations, and versions...Stevie, and his band "Traffic" made it popular back around 1970, from the album of the same name.

Chod, like so many you missed music's golden era. You were sidetracked, bushwacked, led down a garden path, call it what you will. It is a absolute shame what passes for popular music today. Most if it is utter trash in comparison IMHO. The good news is that you are reaching backwards where the treasure lies to be discovered over and over. We who lived thru it thoroughly enjoy your opened wide eyes as we get to relive the era watching you light up each time you hit a gold vein. Not all that glitters is gold, of course, but you are hitting many high notes as evidenced by your glowing reactions. Keep up the good work. Hunt on choosing wisely.

Since you are into organ music try these two songs by Steve since he played the organ om these: "Why Can't We Live Together" & " Take It to the Final Hour" from the album (About Time)

I'm really late to this one but I had to add an exceptional song Winwood did with Traffic. One of their better but lesser known pieces called "40,000 Headmen"

I also recommend that you react to Steve's video of his song 'Higher Love' which also features Chaka Khan

This tune was on the Blind Faith album with, of course, Eric Clapton. Steve Windwood is, in my opinion, one of the most gifted musicians alive. He has a catalog of music that is top notch. Steve plays several instruments proficiently, including, keyboards, drums, mandolin, guitars, bass and saxophone. He is, by all measures, an immensely talented individual.
