With feeling. I'm sure your family is so proud of you...I am to....keep on playing and I'll keep watching..your so talented and gorgeous..never forget God loves you always
Steve Winwood has always been one of my favorite all around musicians since he started out in the 60's. I saw him perform live with Traffic twice, first time in 1968 in Central Park, then again in 1970 at the Fillmore East, and he performed this song
@ Bill White. Sir, you may already have seen it but Steve has made a new 2020 socially distanced version of "Gimme Some Lovin'". It's somewhere out there on UA-cam. He's still got it!!!!
Wonderful analysis, Fil. When Steve and Jim Capaldi reformed Traffic back in 1994, I caught the show and they opened the show with this. No fanfare, no wild lights and arena announcer, just Steve walking up to the microphone with his guitar and singing. Jim soon joined him to sing harmony vocals and flautist Randall Bramblett joined shortly thereafter. A haunting, simple and beautiful performance to kick off a spectacular night of music. You brought me back to a wonderful time in my life, so thanks again, sir!
@@loosiluI wonder if Steve's colour blind, may be, George Michael was but the 80's was a different era, but I suppose in the 60's into the 70's there weren't budgets for wardrobes, also (ie Bernie Taupins wife used to design and make the bands performance outfits) this was pretty common back then. and filming was in black and white, this is just must thinking. I'm 61 and lived in England around that time.
Man does this guy know not only guitar, but vocal ranges. It’s a breath of fresh air every time I see a new song he analyzes. Keep up the amazing work Fil.
I was a major Traffic fan from Day One. Steve has one of the best and most distinctive singing voices ever. I was fortunate enough to see/hear Traffic at the legendary Middle Earth in London in Spring of '68. Dave Mason had already left the band by this time. Stood ten feet away while Steve played Dear Mr Fantasy on piano, then jumped up and grabbed his guitar to play that beautiful lead part. Unforgettable. Those Middle Earth shows started at midnight, no alcohol served, of course, but everybody was high. I saw Jeff Beck (Rod on vocals) there, also Tyrannosaurus Rex (when it was just Marc Bolan and a guy I think playing the bongos, both sitting down on the stage) and finally, last but not least, Captain Beefheart! The Captain was heavily pitched by John Peel on the radio. Those were great days, I was in England (I'll always love England) for my junior year abroad from my college in the US. Thanks Fil, as usual, for your interesting analysis. I always say rock and roll started in the US, and England saved it.
and Spencer Davis (RIP) Group and Traffic were voices of MY youth!! and I attended a concert of Steve and his group a few years ago - the voice remains and his guitar/keys amazing - plus his daughter (Lilly) opened ... another marvelous talent
Really cool you picked Stevie Winwood. I saw him play on August 28th 2014, here in Montreal, opening for Tom Petty. He was absolutely on his game. Unbelievable. I was truly blown away and I've seen well over 2500 live shows. I have been doing a radio show since 1990 and have been playing music in bands since '83. I don't use the word unbelievable often and it takes a lot for me to be blown away. He played songs from The Spencer Davis Group, Traffic, Blind faith, I was downright shocked by his performance. He played guitar on Traffic's Mr.Fantasy and Blind faith's Can't Find My Way Home(way better and different than any Clapton version, I shit you not.) and a few others. His voice and piano/keyboard playing were also on point and delicious. He played: I'm a Man (The Spencer Davis Group song) Them Changes (Buddy Miles cover) Can't Find My Way Home (Blind Faith song) Medicated Goo (Traffic song) The Low Spark of High Heeled Boys (Traffic song) Empty Pages (Traffic song) Higher Love Dear Mr. Fantasy (Traffic song) Gimme Some Lovin' (The Spencer Davis Group song) So glad i went to that show. Tom Petty and his band had to really bring it to not be overshadowed by their opener....they did. One of the best live show I have ever seen.

One of my favorite Traffic songs, but this Steve Winwood stripped back version was so powerful! I'm glad I found this and could say thank you, Fil! Your analysis was outstanding!
I’ve been praying for this and “ Can’t Find My Way Home” by his fireplace forever!!!! The man is a genius. More Traffic songs please! There’s a video of him at 16 on TV playing and sounding like Ray Charles.
Steve Winwood is an incredible genius. I was fortunate to have been born in a time when I could experience music directly beginning in the 60s. I love The Spencer Davis Group. Was lucky to have lived in San Francisco from 1967-1982. Saw Traffic at the Fillmore & The Winter land in 1968, Blind Faith in Portland in 1969 and Steve Winwood in Bend Oregon in 2008. Please more Steve Winwood through all the years. One suggestion; how about a review of some "older obscure" groups...Crow "Evil Woman", The Music Machine "Talk, Talk" & Python Lee Jackson "In A Broken Dream"...etc. Thank you Fil, you are The Best!
One on the most underrated guitarists of this style of mixing strumming with picking out individual notes (while singing) is Ian Anderson of Jethro Tull. “Life’s a Long Song”, Skating Away”, “Mother Goose”, and Salamander are some of his best.
Strange how Steve is never in any best of rock singers lists by the music press, his voice is still one of the most recognised in world music, great analysis as always Fil, another recommendation from me is a band described as the best bar band in the world by the American music press Southside Johnny and the Asbury Dukes with their cover of ' Walk Away Renee' , you won't be disappointed, keep safe and cheerio from Glasgow.
@ 5:59, you mention the song "Back in the High Life" (back in 1986). When I first heard this song on the radio, I thought for sure it was Peter Gabriel singing this song. I wonder if anyone else thought the same thing.
Congratulations on your first live analysis Fil....an absolute milestone! Truly...you couldn’t have picked a better artist than the incredible Steve Winwood as the first! Legend! Cheers Mario! 😀👌👍
Wow, Steve' s Martin sounds so big. Don' t forget he has a capo at the 7th fret. Amazing. I have an old Traffic concert on DVD with this song played by Winwood, Capaldi and Wood. Capaldi plays such a great tamborine. Btw. I always loved british and irish folk music.
It's really good to see Steve Winwood still getting the recognition he so richly deserves (if not more so!). I have to admit I didn't like his 1980s period but, then again, there was very little music that I did like in the 80s. In any case, even musicians (genius musicians, even) do have to eat. My first exposure to "John Barleycorn Must Die" was on a Transatlantic sampler vinyl album, which I bought in 1972 or 73. The performers are a group by the name of The Young Tradition. Their version is, in fact, very traditional in nature - a cappella and (it appears) complete with hand behind one ear and a clothes peg on each nose (very Steeleye Span!). The Traffic's version also featured some very tasteful flute playing, which is not particularly missed here, though, as SW does it all so well on his own. Apart from the great singing and guitar playing, by Steve, I find that remembering all of the words and how the verses are sequenced is a job in itself. I always get it wrong when I sing JBMD in the shower. Perhaps I should draw a process flow diagram, because that's what this song is - a description of the agricultural cycle - from planting all the way through to enjoying the fruits of everyone's labours. Python fans may be put in mind of "The Ronettes Sing Medieval Agronomy" Cheers!
Thanks for this video, Fil. I have seen the performance video many many times. I can't say enough good things about Steve Winwood. I think of his voice as an important voice of the 60s. I became aware of him when he was with Traffic. For anyone who thought this performance was good, go listen to the album Blind Faith. One of the best albums of all time. There is a great "recent" video of Steve Winwood playing Can't Find My Way Home in front of a fireplace. Worth your time for sure. Cheers.
Thank you so much for all of this quality music. Your analysis always makes the music much better, kind of like walking in the woods when you know the name and what every bird that is singing looks like and their name and some info about their biology. It makes the nature walk much more fulfilling and interesting. Thank you for making the music even better for me
"kind of like walking in the woods when you know the name and what every bird that is singing looks like and their name and some info about their biology." Great analogy Elise... 🙂
Higher Love is such a great song. My favorite version is the one with his daughter, Lilly. I think it brings out more of the spiritual essence of the song.
Nicely done Fil, and no technical glitches!! Thanks for highlighting Steve's guitar skills. I saw him only once in concert, when he opened up for Tom Petty in 2008. I got to see the legend sing and play "Dear Mr Fantasy"....... it was magical ♥️
@@baekdutiger631 Yes Jason, I know!! But if my memory serves me( it's been 12 yrs) Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers played alongside Steve on stage during "Dear Mr. Fantasy".
@@cindypowers4993 To be honest I fell in love with Windwood for the songs from the 80s in the late 2000s but I knew of him during my highschool yrs of the 80s but later on last decade is when I truly dug in to his history!!!
Your ability to instruct and impart your vast knowledge of these musical compositions is remarkable. Love your guitar instructions. Makes me what to start playing again. Thank you so much. Fil. 🎸🎼🤘❤️
Great analysis Fil - as usual! You may already know this. Steve Winwood grew up in Great Barr, Birmingham. I am sure I read somewhere that he was allowed to play the church organ at his local church at 14 years of age and he carried Christine McVie's books home from school (She was Christine Perfect back then and her dad was a vicar ?) Apparently, there is a "Walk of Fame" in Birmingham - on Broad Street (maybe). Some famous Brummie/Midland inductees who have "stars" on the "Walk" include Noddy Holder (Slade), Jeff Lynne (The Move, ELO), Ozzy Osbourne & Bill Ward (Black Sabbath) and various others (?). So why isn't Steve Winwood's name been added? I am sure you would agree he has earned it! Saying that though, I reckon Steve would be too modest to be part of something like that! Anyway, Steve is one of the finest musicians to come from the U.K. and he's made excellent music for many years. Let's hope he keeps going as long as he can. Thanks again Fil. Stay safe.
Fil - Your first live analysis video came through great. Everything looked and sounded just like your recorded videos. If this saves you time, you might consider doing them all live. People enjoy the chat room too. Looks like a winner.
I never knew a song about the life of a seed could be so beautiful! When you are so talented, it *does* look so easy but we know it's not. Love how he taps his foot the whole time.
Fil, i saw Traffic in Detroit play this song in 1970, It was a spectacular concert, Traffic was the Best Man, what memories here, A friend of my older brother worked at the Eastown theater, he was a local stage hand, every time i went there he would take me backstage, i got to meet the Who, they played the whole Tommy album, Keith Moon Gave me a drum stick that i still have, I got to meet, Ten Years After, Alvin Lee let me touch his Guitar, I got to meet The Small Faces, Humble Pie, Mountain, The James Gang, this guy went on to be a Roadie for the James Gang that night, What Memories, Couain Figel
Phil!! Love your stuff man. I'm 65 and thoroughly enjoy your spotlight on these great classic artists. Can you do a special about the great bands and their proximity to historic UK cities? Most of the great prog bands (except for the Moody Blues and ELP) lived in our near Cambridge? The center of the Universe for wonderful choral music and the Anglican ethos. Most of the R&R centered bands came from "blue-collar" Manchester? And Liverpool was the gateway for the skiffle-to-rock evolution, right? American soldiers brought their early rock albums by Elvis, Bill Haley, Ike Turner, Chuck Berry, etc. and that kicked off the Animals, Beatles, Stones, etc. If there is a book that breaks down the genre and related UK cities that would be awesome. Or maybe a Phil the rock polymath will do a show about it! Best regards!
Your guitar is really nice! Good to hear your acoustics, especially to a Steve song. I'm used to him playing keyboards. Hope you do more live analysis videos.
I have seen a lot of comments on SW - it seems one thing that a lot of people may enjoy exploring a bit further is his sense of rhythm - he has a vision of texture surpassing most people and plays so deep in the pocket it just feels amazing
Ever since the seventies I have considered Dear Mr. Fantasy a rock anthem. And probably the best version is the 2007 Crossroads. Where his Strat Plus has perfect tune and sustain.
Hurray! I'll dance at your wedding Brother Fil! Very good BUT I was hoping you'd feature a Big favorite of mine : Traffic...". Light Up or Leave Me Alone". Incredible tune! John Barleycorn is a beautiful tune, + God bless you for the analysis. Steve IS a great player. Hanging around SO much with Eric Clapton certainly didn't hurt!! Love your show Bro. Take care Fil, you're the Greatest! Dave
Many years ago, when I was in the service, I took leave because Traffic and Electric Flag were touring So. Cal together. A friend and I followed them to a few concerts and had a great time. Great memories.
Saw him when he was in Blind Faith with Clapton. That was the first time that I heard The Color of the Lord. I was totally 💯 blown away. Check out Mitch Ryder and the Detroit Wheels.
Hey Fil, I really enjoy your analysis videos. I don't think anyone gets more joy from music than Fil. It shows on his face! How about an analysis of the Winwood live performance of Mr Fantasy? Thanks!
I have a mutual friend with Mr. Winwood...Mac Gayden, borned and raised in Nashville but now living in North Carolina. Mac is a legendary slide guitarist. He co-wrote the perennial hit...Ever Lasting Love.
I have my flute out. Channeling Chris Wood. I know you did this a year ago. Timeless music is... timeless. But all you Steve W. fans want to hear my flute counterpoint. Admit it! (oh I could not hold Chris' jockstrap).
This is one of the most important songs in my life. I learned every song off of The Blind Faith album and I still play it today. The story in the lyrics is great too. In those days, I liked all those acoustic songs by the heavy musos like Winwood and Led Zeppelin. I called it heavy mellow. Thanks for sharing.
I went to see Steve Winwood with Traffic in 1972 live performance at Winterland in San Francisco and the concert cost only $6.00 then and played this song as well Rainmaker and other great songs.
I would suggest Fil does weekly concerts, playing his songs and cover songs. The analysis is getting repetitive, and evolution is needed to survive. I don't mean stop the bread and butter analysis, but everyone loves and respects Fil, so seeing him use his talents would be awesome. I really enjoy seeing his talent with the instruments and he needs to show his ability more, not just highlight others like Windwood. This is only my advice, of course.
Winwood, gracious, talented and humble. Three words most famous musicians cannot claim. Search "Now the green blade riseth" by him on acoustic guitar. It is appropriate for the coming celebration of Christ's resurrection.
i got to see him 2012 majestic theatre san antonio texas i still have some phone video of the show.how bout that fender blackface against the wall next to the hammond
Hmmm. I think I would be an audience member for this song (big hands) Listening to Steve Winwood's guitar has always been so soothing to the soul, well at least his more recent work. Fil's guitar sounded so very nice. I was certain that there would be some description about some different tuning on Steve's guitar (it does sound unique) but no it was just that 7th fret capo, and Steve Winwood. Thanks Fil
Steve Winwood is one of those multi-instrument musicians that has the ability to stand out no matter who he's playing with & what he's playing
Thank you for spotlighting Steve Winwood! For my money, he is the most talented musician of my lifetime (I'm 63).
Steve Winwood is simply brilliant 💜

Thanks!
Great live analysis Fil! I must say this makes me really want to hear you do more acoustic and ballad type of song. :)
Steve always had a great voice! :)
My favorite Traffic song. First heard it as an 18 year old college freshman, 35 years ago!
Love it.
Great variety.....thanks Fil.
Haha geography isn't my strong point!
@@wingsofpegasus on well. want to learn more about the PF lunatics? DSOTM? Get The Lunar Men by Jenny Uglow. Amazing. Yeah, I'm a book geek. Cheers!
Your guitar is really nice! Good to hear your acoustics, especially to a Steve song. I'm used to him playing keyboards. Hope you do more live analysis videos.
What a talent. Brilliant
Steve's Phenomenal a true virtuoso, Love his piano playing in Glad from Traffic
I have seen a lot of comments on SW - it seems one thing that a lot of people may enjoy exploring a bit further is his sense of rhythm - he has a vision of texture surpassing most people and plays so deep in the pocket it just feels amazing
One of my all-time favs.
Love his style ! ;) much appreciate the video Fil,.. rock
"Glad" and "Freedom Rider" -- great memories with those tunes.
Steve is so underrated. Great job Fil. Props from North Dakota.
I love his voice, great artist.
Ever since the seventies I have considered Dear Mr. Fantasy a rock anthem. And probably the best version is the 2007 Crossroads. Where his Strat Plus has perfect tune and sustain.
Can you believe Steve W. was 18 when he started on this? His guitar, his vocals, his effect - just the best ever.
The first Winwood song that captured me was Traffic's No Face No Name No Number. Great analysis, Fil 🤘
Thanks!
And I missed it. You are doing something wonderful again. Thank you.
Please do a analysis of YES group. Could be "Love will find the way". Greetings from Chile. I like somuch Steve Winwood, thanks.
Hi Fil , how are you , this is wonderful , thank you , Rock 🤘
Thanks hun , take care & be safe ok ✌🤘
Hey Fil, I really enjoy your analysis videos. I don't think anyone gets more joy from music than Fil. It shows on his face! How about an analysis of the Winwood live performance of Mr Fantasy? Thanks!
I have a mutual friend with Mr. Winwood...Mac Gayden, borned and raised in Nashville but now living in North Carolina. Mac is a legendary slide guitarist. He co-wrote the perennial hit...Ever Lasting Love.
Thanks Fil love you man!
I have my flute out. Channeling Chris Wood. I know you did this a year ago. Timeless music is... timeless. But all you Steve W. fans want to hear my flute counterpoint. Admit it! (oh I could not hold Chris' jockstrap).
what an amazing musician.
Thanks! Haha yes I tried that approach for 15 years, it wasn't very effective! 😂
Hey Fil! How about something on Warren Zevon?
I'm an 80s kid and if I ever hear higher love again, i'll probably explode. Steve is a great man though
Your hands are beautiful- made for guitar and piano!
Winwood, gracious, talented and humble. Three words most famous musicians cannot claim. Search "Now the green blade riseth" by him on acoustic guitar. It is appropriate for the coming celebration of Christ's resurrection.
thanks for the analysis & review
Had to watch again Wonderful Fil
kuj
like how he holds a note.
Another good one. The voice is unique. Thanks
i got to see him 2012 majestic theatre san antonio texas i still have some phone video of the show.how bout that fender blackface against the wall next to the hammond
😻😻😻😻😻 out of 😻😻😻😻😻
~Love Steve winwood. You might have to have him another show of him....too much talent for just once.😊
Thanks Fil
Hell, I remember him being called little Stevie Winwood.
You appear to be confusing him with 'Little' Stevie Wonder.
"Dear Mr Fantasy ".....please .
LIVE WITH CLAPTON
I second that!
@@loosilu no , just SW please . It is stellar
@@rickrebell5289 Well, it's Traffic, so it's not just him.
@@loosilu it is him playing lead in the video from Crossroads
