About 10 years ago this happened at a dealership my friend worked at. Instead of using a drill they just used a hammer and a chisel to punch through the tank. They hit something like 40-50 cars in one night.

We didn't have locking gas caps in the '60's.
Well, we DID. There just wasn't as much need for them because gas was really cheap.

Most gas stations went away from that because they didn't want to pay for people to pump gas. They only want to pay for the one working the cash register and maybe someone making pizza or sandwiches and maybe a lazy manager who just sits in the office and sleeps.
Imagine going to jail over a tank of gas you stole. There are alternatives: take the bus, carpool, ride a bicycle, skateboard.... walk. We've been walking since our forefathers slithered out of the oceans... You cannot justify theft of property and resources because gas prices are soaring. What they are doing is absolutely wrong. But, it also speaks of the gap between the haves and have nots in this country. If people made a living wage instead a minimum salary in a part time job, or two, or three, probably we would see less stuff like this. And I am saying "probably." You cannot have those huge multinationals and corporations bringing in billion$ in profits and have people homeless or living way below the poverty level. Just something to think about.
As a society we tend to point the finger to the poor and applaud those that are rich and smart enough to hire expensive lawyers and accounting firms so that they can avoid paying Federal and state taxes.
Capitalism isn’t the problem laziness and soft on crime policies are. Guarantee the people stealing gas have a criminal record. There’s also a thing called public transportation. Now ask yourself, what type of person has a car but opts to steal gas? It’s those that commit crimes and choose not to work 2 jobs if 1.
