So amazingly ironic you’re wearing a Jinjer shirt, because Mikael is the reason Tati and other singers like her exist, he was doing this in the 90’s when people didn’t even understand how it was possible
@@gmeister3022 Opeth may have existed in 1989 but I'm not sure. Mikael Åkerfeldt joined the band in 1990 after David Isberg pretty much kicked everyone else out. However, Mikael wasn't the bands vocalist until after David left in 1992. So I wouldn't say he's been doing it since the 80's.
Mikael? Over other male vocalists mixing clean and dirty in the 90s? Over Karyn Crisis and other women, in the 90s, mixing clean and dirty? Over the male dirty vs female clean from early 90s Theater of Tragedy? Just Mikael?
@@yodieyuh I mean yeah, because he invented the technique they were all using in the 80’s. Didn’t say he was the best, just the godfather. Edit: although to be fair I am biased and do think he is the best, at least until very recently when the science caught up to the technique and their are some singers out their doing insane stuff now
@@Polyphemus89 I feel I must be confused. What exactly are you referring to that vocalists "didn't even understand how it was possible"? Just in my own experience, I first heard Opeth through MP3 trades in the early-mid 90's and nothing about Mikael's vocals was new or puzzling to me. Patton was already experimenting with sliding between clean and harsh in Mr Bungle. Bands like Anal Cunt covered the gamut from clean to shrill to growl to screech to snarl to everything else all in the same 'verse'. Morbid Angel had Evil D doing growl verses and choir-chant choruses in '93, while Therion was also doing growl to choir in '93. Staying with Mikael. His friend and Bloodbath bandmate, Dan Swano, was experimenting with clean + harsh in Edge of Sanity. Aldrahn was moving from harsh to clean in the same line in early Dodheimsgard. He could blend both together into one sound as well. 1994 brought us the first Acid Bath. While Sammy does the more extreme screams and screeches Dax was moving constantly between clean and growl/snarl and back again, sometimes within the same line or even the same word. This is just the first time I've heard anyone claim Mikael did something vocally that hadn't been done before. I love his vocals and used Opeth as practice for my own vocals back in the day.
"Effortless", you said it! He doesnt seem to move any other muscle to growl than he really needs😄If you enjoyed this song, then "Harlequin Forest" from Opeth should be up your sleeve too:) This and "Ghost of Perdition" are my two favorite songs from them.
I'm just discovering Opeth myself, and the song that got me interested was Sorceress. The melodic intro and then the guitar chug is absolutely amazing.
@@Republic3D haha, when I discovered opeth, a few weeks later I realized I had sorceress in my playlist for about 2 years😄 so technically this was my first song too:P
I think he just made it look effortless - he doesn't do new songs with growls because it was hurting his throat. I'd love to see a reaction to The Grand Conjuration.
Bisscute, i'm so glad you got to do an Opeth song. I just knew you'd like it. You appreciate good live performances and Opeth will deliver. I would love it if you would do either: The Drapery Falls, Bleak, or Blackwater Park. Live ofcourse! Drapery falls is the easiest if you're new to Opeth bit i am sure you would like the other two aswell. Hope you will do more Opeth in the future ^^
Ghost Reveries and Blackwater Park are too close to call which is best :O I was in the pickle of which to buy the other day so I get that sexy flac action haha and I went with Blackwater Park. Can't remember why I went for that one but they are both so good.
I remember sitting in my friends room when we just bought this album and was completly blown away. Today he is the singer and guitarist in ORM and I work as a music teacher. A lot of it is because of Opeth.
The venue was Red Rocks in Colorado - an absolutely iconic setting and one of those legendary places every artist wants/needs to play. And it was an incredible night (I was there 😄)
Opeth is without a doubt one of the greatest bands to ever grace this planet with their god-like compositions. I wasn't even into progressive music until I heard Blackwater Park, that song is just insane. A solid masterpiece in every sense of the word, although I'd recommend you to do the studio version first to hear the song in its full glory. It's always an experience with Opeth.
Pleasantly surprised to see a fresh reaction to this song. This song holds a special place in my heart. When Kashmir came out in 1975 (I was 15), I had my first favorite song by my favorite band. For 30 years that lasted until this song came out in 2005. I've seen Opeth live 9 times, and this song and Opeth became my new favorite song by my favorite band. I thought this would stay on top for a long time, but I got blindsided by Lovebites, and now The Awakening/The Hammer of Wrath live at Zepp DiverCity is my #1 song by my #1 band.
Dunno if anyone has recommended this to you, but you should check Procupine Tree "Anesthetize" (live from Tilburg is must!). You won't be disappointed.
So to answer some of the points in the chat... there's no moshing because the venue is stadium seating, plus its Opeth. Its music to listen to. Also, Fish, this concert happened pre-covid. The venue is Red Rocks Ampitheatre in Colorado.
Hi Bisscute ! I've been following your channel for a while but I think I'm commenting for the first time. I just wanted to say that if you like this venue, now is the time to discover the band Gojira with the song "Pray". Same place and same day as this Opeth performance. It's a French metal band, world famous (Joe sings in English).
They are such a good band and Mikael Akerfeldt is a true genius of modern rock music. They have transformed from their early death metal days into more of a progressive metal band, This song shows the many sides of the band. Beautiful and powerful. Such great songs backed up by brilliant musicians.

I have to pinch myself sometimes to remind myself I was actually at this once-in-a-lifetime concert. Not only were the planets aligned for the venue and Opeth, but Gojira and Devin Townsend Project opened for Opeth as well. I gave my hoodie to my wife, so I was cold, but I refused to leave because I wanted to hear Deliverance, which - thankfully - they played last; therefore, we stayed for the entire performance and I was able to snag the last poster commemorating the evening. I can't complain! There are many videos reacting to this evening for all of the bands, but especially this song. It's a proud moment to live in Colorado (USA) for a venue and night like this.

Probably my favourite Opeth song. Epic! If you like progressive music then would be cool to get a reaction to Watcher of the skies by Genesis Live.
This was when they had Peter Gabriel as a frontman and he would put on a very theatrical performance with multiple costume changes between songs.
I think you'll enjoy watching a performance from this era 😀There's a live video of "Watcher of skies" on UA-cam.
I see, thanks ❤
@@BisscuteReacts You're welcome. Really enjoying your reactions. It was especially awesome seeing you really dig this Opeth track but also all the depeche mode songs you've reacted to :D
Now you are a real metalhead! LOL's!! 😆🤘
I have a real appreciation for vocalists with multiple sides to their voice. To me they are the most interesting and exciting of singers.
