Love this spray gun! I use it for multiple primers, base coat and clear coat from glasurit. It handles anything with ease. Also its nice to have a plastic gun that I don't feel bad scratching by accident.

I've had the opposite experience with it since it doesn't spray that great, just passable for quick insurance work, but anywhere moving that many things through a booth should be making enough to just buy multiple higher quality spray guns that negate any time saved and spray better

I really like your channel because the paint on your projects looks fantastic (the blue is GREAT). That's why I subscribed to your UA-cam channel a long time ago. There are a few thinggs I'm not fond of, running bare hands over the panels, wiping the wax and grease remover by going left and right (should be one direction and fold the wipe), last but not lease is shaking clear coat to mix (creates bubbles in it), that drives me nuts. It works for you so hey, keep doing it. Your paint looks great when it'd done.

I actually used a 25 dollar princess auto (hobo freight) gun to put down my base and then switched to a devilbiss FLG 4 Finish Line gun for the clear and I could see and hear the difference of the better quality spray pattern.

Try switching the guns, the expensive one to spray the base and the cheap one to spray the clear. If you know what you're doing you're gonna understand that the last coat of anything, whether it's base or clear, it is going to take the texture below it. So, would you want to lay your clear coat over a very smooth base coat knowing that the clear is going to take the texture below it? Or, would you spray your clear over a very rough orange peel base coat and let the clear automatically take the shape of the base?

@@juanrivera8566I am doing that from times to times to emulate a "thicker" finish when it's due. But in the rest, I just use some quality scotch Brite to run over base to get much closer to factory settings.

Great video as usual. I use that gun everyday with the exception on clear coating, painting multiple bumpers & only having to clean just the nozzles is nice and I don’t have to own 4 guns. As far as clearing, sometimes I start at the bottom, sometimes from the top, sometimes I go from bottom the 2nd coat from top. There’s no right way. Next time you clear, try using a 1.4 tip, you can always up the psi to 23-25 with no issues. Keep in mind, hvlp guns need to go slower cause of the lower psi, and with that 1.2 tip(I know that’s your favorite size) you would need to go slower then normal to wet it up, I’ve tried the 1.2 and didn’t like them for clear.

I sell 3M and have sold a few of the spray gun tips. It just rubs me the wrong way that they are a designed to fail part. Dont know if I would call them most efficient. Minimal air consumption with minimal overspray is what makes a gun efficent. Tuff to beat the efficiency of the Devilbiss DV1-B and DV1-C. I use the B-1 and C-1 aircaps at only 8psi to 12psi and the overspray is atleast 20% less than my overspray was when I was using Walcom Genesi 360 light HTE guns. 3M has kind of gone to sh*t with some of their junk. I still use their sand paper and PPS 2.0 cup system but stuff like their buffing compounds, spray guns, regulators, clay bars, ect kind of suck

I would recommend a 1.3 tip for clear. I used the 1.2 at first but wasn’t sure I was getting enough clear on the panel after 2 coats.. so I checked the next one before and after clear and was only getting about 1.8 mill thickness with the 1.2 tip. That being said I switched to the 1.3 to get a little more material on. Everyone sprays differently and maybe you wouldn’t have the same results as I did but it’s just a thought. I have 8 of these 3m guns and use them exclusively for all aspects of the paint job with top notch results! I love the 3m gun

    • @fiys567

You can get a good finish by adjusting settings. Not every gun is going to be capable of a quality finish. You can still get a quality finish out of some cheaper guns less than 200 which isn’t bad at all. More expensive guns are going to spray fairly well without much adjustment or even technique. Try out the Eastwood concours lt100 for clear coat. Thing lays clear and atomizes it very well. I just painted for the first time and the clear coat came out extremely nice with the lt100 only a bit of orange peel which was still a lot less than all new cars these days.

Nah no hating on the spray gun. 3M's products are always trustworthy and durable to work on cars. Also, there is such a variety of colors to pick on!

I dont see how this gun would ever be a good choice for a diyer since the finish is okay but nothing spectacular, most $2-300 guns spray at a similar if not better finish and the cost of tips would overtime well outweigh the cost of a better spraygun.
For a high production shop it doesn't make sense either,I spray for an international auction where at least 15 cars a day need to be sprayed and on some days where theyre all small 1-2 panel jobs it can be as high as 20 cars going through. In each of the two booths i can have 5 different colors. We use ppg envirobase and theres quite a bit of solids in that paint, its almost sandy to a degree and those chunks sometimes push through PPS filters. We use Sata Jet 5000RP's and recently ANI 200's. The sata rps cups dont have the filter grit push through issue the pps cups do and the guns spray better. Its faster for me to just grab another gun that already has the paint cup attached to it for a different color or material than it is to fuck around getting the nozzle on, half the time the needle doesn't even sit properly in the nozzle and the only cup shstem compared is PPS. A can of high powered spray gun cleaner with have a gun spitting clean in 30 seconds and after that clean the gun is still rock solid, the same cant be said for these plastic nozzles that degrade with every spray and clean.
We demoed these guns for a month and found not only did we waste MORE time cleaning the nozzles and lining them up but when they start to degrade around the 10th-15th use they both waste time switching to a new nozzle and the cost jver time makes no sense either. It was more economical for us to buy 5 Sata jet 5000B's than it was to buy 5 of these 3m guns and the subsequent nozzles needed after 5 packs of replacement nozzler per gun, meanwhile the satas would still spray like new at no increasing cost.
For the DIYer its an expensive gun that sprays okay, not great, and costs as much as a pair of the HF Black Widow guns that both spray better and the diyer isnt under the time constraints where the 3M gun tries to market efficiency
The 3m gun is only really good in a shop wherebits the only gun being used and there is only one of them so the "quick" nozzle cleans and swaps are a real plus, but realistically a shop needing to squeeze every minute of efficiency out like that would also be netting enough revenue to pay for multiple spray guns

I painted bicycles in the 70 s with spray bombs …. I’ve never met a gun I don’t like !!! …. If anything it’s about the longevity in terms of quality not spray quality

The 3m gun is amazing, a black blend job is kinda cutting what the gun can do short, that's all I'm saying.is it clear enough now???

@@christianbeahm8171 yes. You originally said “a gun” not the 3m gun ty.

I understand now thank you. when you had originally just said just "hate seeing a gun used on black" it had looked as if you were saying that you didnt like to use a spray gun to paint black, so I had been a little confused. I do believe the video was more geared more towards the guns capabilities and not the actual blend itself. but again thank you fore clarifying that for me I was mistaken there, I apologize and thank you for clearing that up for me.@@christianbeahm8171

The 3m performance gun in 2024 costs almost $800. You can buy cheaper guns that are just fine if you are just needing to paint one car in your garage diy style.

100% recommend this gun! I've done 1 full car, and about 30 collision repairs with it. Being able to swap between clearbase to base is brilliant, and the cleanup is just amazing. I found I get a better finish with clear at ~25psi, while shooting all other material at 20psi.
My only gripe is that I'm getting a TON of overspray and subsequent wasted product. I've adjusted fluid at 4 turns from closed (3m recommended), and even when resistance starts at trigger.. no dice.
    Any thoughts Brian?
Thanks again for all your lessons.

Do you ever blow thinner through it when let's say using a heavy primer? That stuff can be like cement.
