I had a diabetic friend play this once, he collected every snack and collapsed and asked why since he only ate the healthy ones. I told him he ate too many and caused Captain Novolin to die of diabetes, and he proceeded to laugh so hard that he couldn't breathe for like 5 minutes

My brother was diagnosed as a type 1 diabetic in the early 90's and played this in the hospital.
Years later, I told him I picked up a copy of Captain Novolin he said "why the hell did you buy that? That's the worst game I've every played!"

If I was diagnosed and given this game I'd be insulted lmao. Who doesn't want a fictional rolemodel that has the same issues, getting his ass kicked by sentient junk food, and playing his game is even more difficult than managing diabetes in real life?

I remember when I was a kid my doctor gave me a copy of “Captain America Meets the Asthma Monster”. It was so bad it was funny. Apparently Cap was supposed to have asthma and fought a dude in a discount Swamp Thing costume with dust bunny henchmen. Pretty sure he had a gun that gave people asthma attacks. The 90s were wild…

2:38 - Not inaccurate...if you eat too many carbs and don't get enough insulin, your BG gets too high, you get ketones, and go into ketoacidosis. And die. Daughter is Type 1 Diabetic. And laughed the first time I showed her this game when she was about 18.

There's been a weird youtube trend of showing off this game lately. I plan on using it for a gag gift for a type 1 friend.
Don't catastrophize too much. Young type 1 diabetics are much sturdier than most parents worry they are. Try to end the steps of ketoacidosis with "and then you'll be sick and worthless and we'll have to drop everything to fix you" instead of "and die", It'll make it easier to have an 18 year old with diabetes.

My favorite thing about this game was the part where Captain Novolin was told to keep a note on him that says he's diabetic, so if he's found unconscious, he should be given some sugar. Because that's what superheroes should have: little notes telling people how to rescue them when they inevitably fail and lose consciousness.
But in all seriousness, I don't think it's unplayable. Just tedious and takes some getting used to, and the concept of a "superhero" who's really just a fit guy who's found ways to live with his diabetes is more than a little silly. But so is the giant walking food, so I have to think that was understood, even by the people who made it.

BUT, I also basically made anyone who came to my house play it. And it did make me feel better, since at the time diabetes wasn't as well known and no other kids near me had it. I was able to point at it and say that we had a video game for it. AS bad as it is, I still love it! (The game clearly didn't work tho as I am typing this at 2:30 am with a low blood sugar. -_- )

Ok, I didn't know about the storyboarding!
In all honesty, I can't help but wonder how differently Captain Novolin would be received if it were a reskin of a _good_ platformer or if today there were a romhack of SMW or a Godot remake with everything done well instead.

I'm anxiously waiting for at least one captivating, inventive educational game out there for SNES… not amazing, just surprisingly okay. Like, is there a Secret of Evermore about gastroenteritis?

Fun fact: Got this game at the fleas instead of Castlevania IV just cause it had "Captain" in the title
Second fun fact: you can speed through the final boss just by kneeling on the lever since his attacks can't reach you at a certain spot
