Instead of allowing bots, I feel the much better alternative would be a better way to obtain flax, or achievement diaries = more flax picked the higher you are.
I disagree with the outcome of removing bots having players do content they dont want to do. Supply and demand rule will make items like flax very expensive but then in turn if flax was 100-1k each people will pick it trust me. As for all other items. Raw Sharks are not even 400 each so they will finally be back to the good ole days of 1k each... bots are shit and people quit because of them. Like Mint said he spends hours finding a free world for artio
Near enough every raw material is dropped en masse by bosses/raids these days anyway to cater for ironmen, bots being removed may increase the prices of items slightly but I doubt it'd ever get too bad, probably stabilize pretty fast as more people came back and started bossing/skilling
think you are missing the point. Say if what you say is correct and picking flax become a 10m a hour money making method then the game will die. There would be no point of doing high level content if picking flax is the best money maker out there. And not only that on one would enjoy being forced to pick flax as it is be best money maker and doing like TOA earns less then picking flax. Then the economy would be fcked. Yes supply and demand and whatever but if the demand is higher then the supply then picking flax or like fishing minnows will end up being the best moneymaker in the game if we ban all the bots
@@hyui5096 the the issue i was exagerating but banning all bots will help but it will also have unseen circumstances like this example but who knows really
With removing the bot topic, if econ destruction is a big deal then why not just auto generate the resources? You could remove all the bots with a press of a button and then code the GE to just have the resources at a given price. It's not like Jagex can't just create items out of thin air.
The ways for newer players to make money get destroyed by bots, the big ticket items that high level players farm are less impacted. This cycle keeps new players poorer and struggling to step into the high level gear space.
1:28:03 Why Rice makes that noise? He can't stop touching his hair and moving around this whole stream. It's almost hard to focus on others that are speaking lol
Jad Practice Server. Create a server where you can do back-to-back fight caves / infernal cave runs, where you can setup a loadout (gear/food/pots), and every time you die you just respawn back at a designated wave, with all your gear/food/pots back as specified by loadout. Allow people to run back-to-back practice runs, so that by the time they do it in the main game they're already experienced with it.
1:18:17 confirmed Bot Management will be the next skill added to OSRS Really though I disagree, if no bots picked flax, and flax prices went up due to scarcity, I would be out picking flax as a money maker - in essence the scenario he's describing has the assumption that every player wants to be out bossing and killing whatever the latest content released is constantly.
Insane nonsense. Kind of shocking to hear this from a an ex-senior member. I don’t even know where to begin breaking down how ridiculous his arguments are
I know lol. And Rice Cup has a look on his face at times as if he's struggling to parse and process what Mat was saying. He looked super confused, like he just didn't get what Mat was saying.
MMK's take here is really telling for the state of Jagex's failure to adequately deal with botting. Bots in every endgame area, bots with 200M XP, bots that have farmed for 2,000 hours and made billions of GP each that are still running RIGHT NOW. And he fully SUPPORTS them, wants them to continue "so you dont have to pick flax". If flax was REWARDING, people would WANT to do it. Thousands of methods CANNOT be done by new players, low levels, skillers, or accounts because they've been completely destroyed by bots, PVM overdropping loot tables, and not enough being done about the problem. Cheaters are at the top of every leaderboard running for 12+ hours a day. It's funneling gold to RWT, account trading, phishing networks, and worse. Jagex is just so disconnected with players' actual wishes for bettering the game, it's ridiculous. This has been going on for 20+ years and by not doing enough, Jagex has allowed the problem to infest every aspect of the game. People don't want to log on and see a bot trying to scam them at the GE. People don't want to do their level grind, look over at the nearest player and see they're a bot. Players don't wand their endgame time investments devalued by bots either. Kick back, allow this to happen forever, and see how long your game lasts. The players are sick of it.
"The players are sick of it" - See how quick the game would die out if all bots dissapeared over night. Everyone that wants a more grindy version of runescape will start AND enjoy playing an ironman. Bots are not going anywhere, because it would hurt the game more than it would benefit it in the long run.
@@MrBa143 bots dont keep the game alive. Look how many irons play without leeching supplies from them. Any time people argue FOR the bots, its pretty obvious how low your morals are...
@@Halibut86 The very reason bots aren't going anywhere, is due to the popularity of ironman. Want a somewhat bot free experience? Play an ironman. Jagex knows this. There is no real incentive to put all this money and man power into fighting the bots, it's only gonna bleed them money.
As a veteran player with a medium-sized bank, I do appreciate affordable items and supplies. That being said, the “average player” strives to acquire wealth and chase items. Items are status and have been since RSC’s p-hats. When I walk around the game and see every other med-level player wielding a Fang, the item loses a lot of it’s appeal no matter how good it is. The solution to “average players want good items” isn’t to keep bots in the game. It’s to add more content akin to Barrows that awards a variety of tradeable items with untradeable upgrades.
The biggest issue with allowing botting and RWT is that the economy will be centered around it and all new content will have to be balanced around it being botted and RWT'd. They already did this with amethyst darts, for example, and lowered the amount of darts you can get from amethyst because they knew it would be botted like crazy. You also see this in all the gold sinks they have been adding in. Almost 1 bil to unlock the bank expansions when it really should have been based around account progression. So this screws over people who don't bot and RWT, and it especially screws over ironmen. Probably the best option is to just start making more high level items untradeable, or make tradeable and untradeable options for high end gear. RWTers can get the tradeable versions and people who don't RWT can go for the untradeable ones. This is something that had been suggested with amethyst darts, since then you would have untradeable amethyst darts and tradeable rune darts which are fairly equivalent. Unfortunately Jagex didn't do this and instead just made it longer for normal players to get amethyst darts.
Decent podcast made me sub. If you are open to constructive criticism I would like to see possibly more bullet point questions for Mat K and giving him more time to talk and give responses. Seemed to be quite a bit of talking between hosts.
What Mat said around 31 minutes about private servers is really very interesting. Shows how he is really a leader who thinks from the customer perspective, and good at being both at once. No wonder OSRS got so good so fast, and sadly kind of declined a bit after he left. Privatizing some of the server traffic would stabilize and diffuse some of the current difficulties of Jagex keeping up the servers running properly.
Ricecup is too outspoken for such little contribution. A lot of words / interrupts to repeat what someone just said or a point that has no merit / immediately falls apart after a millisecond of thought.
@@yukimura62 he said if u don’t have bots picking flax or fishing or mining pure ess then other players would have to do it I said when’s the last time u seen a bot doing it because it mostly comes from Pam which is why Pam bots are a bigger problem then he stated no one is going to be picking flax fishing wcing mining ess if bots are gone
Interesting discussion but I completely disagree with the idea of bots being necessary. I feel like they have severely damaged the value of every stage of the game from early F2P money makers to end-game PvM content. I personally think, contrary to Mat K, that without the bots there would still be plenty of access to resources and the market would correct itself.
I don’t think he realised how inflated the economy is. Basically every regular player has a 1b+ bank. Even if a damn shark was 10k people still wouldn’t need to skill for pvm.
His idea is just a way to make more money for jagex. Without bots people would just afk resources on Alts. It's not that hard to afk infernal eels or dark crabs. Also they could make pvm bosses drop more food and resources like they already do. Bot are unnecessary but make jagex money
Agreed. If the less interesting, more commonly botted activities didn't have bots to create them, then the price of that item would inevitably rise, until the point where some players would start doing it for profit. Also, the oldschool team has shown that they can effectively create new ways to increase supply for items where needed (like blood runes via GOTR for example), so anything that bots are currently manufacturing could be addressed with engaging alternative methods via new content.

RiceCup I think you should work on your ability to form sentences. Think about what you want to say before starting to talk. 70% of you talking is just filler "you know" "umm" "like". I don't know if it's because in order to be able to talk you gotta be the first one to open their mouth but after a while it gets annoying. Maybe little more respect on each other and let everyone talk so people don't feel like they need to rush with their thoughts to get their voice heard
I wouldn’t say people being forced to pick flax or other “menial” tasks due to the elimination of bots would be a bad thing for the community, if you talk to most people they love the early stages of the game where you’re progressing and having to do tasks like that , I’ve had more fun doing stuff like that than any boss or raid tbh
dont agree that botting is essential for the game just cuz it makes prices cheaper. Prices being cheaper isnt a good thing. It devalues skilling massively. People only dont do a lot of those things currently BECAUSE they are so devalued to the point its not worth their time.
Main problem with LMS is that there is no ELO system (no matchmaking based on skill). But to be fair before fixing that the bot problem should be an even higher priority.
Whenever people with money comes hard at the small man working for the people, it never goes in anyone's favor. Mat K's take on going to hard on RL and not trusting Adam more is spot on.
the mentality of bots being essential isn't an option, if their truly would be a deficit its not hard for jagex to add more drops to new monsters to combat that deficit or surplus's if needed.
You guys are not equipped to have some of these discussions. I also disagree with mod matk's take on bots being essential and I am surprised nobody challenged his take on it. one of his points was that bots do things the players dont want to do and if players had to do them they would quit the game. I disagree because of supply and demand. This game has an economy. You would simply be able to buy the supplies you need but it will probably just be at a different price. You could even say these price changes might incentivize players to do skilling or other things they previously did not want to do.
I love how the guy who was actually AT the game for YEARS says "Actually, you guys, here's a more in depth look." Only to seemingly constantly be told things by younger people who don't have that experience.
That old minigame i think it was fist of guthix where you run around with the rock and switch to kill or be killed. That was a lot of fun and pvp. Get that in osrs
This was super disappointing. You guys got a pretty exclusive opportunity to extract some really interesting ideas, information, etc. from one of the biggest jagex legends of all time. As much as I enjoy hearing from you 3, I really wish you would have let the man talk!
The problem with the idea of allowing RWT is I’m fairly certain one of the main reasons Jagex avoids it is that you run into a massive legal minefield across multiple countries the moment you have a tangible conversion rate between in-game currency and real currency. This is why the Well of Good Will had to be ended as an event in RS3 where Jagex would donate real money based on how much gold was tossed in.
@@lokithehero2309 the difference is you can’t then cash out those in game currencies. Allowing RWT effectively creates a 2-way transfer between real currency and RSGP. This creates a new currency, which is highly regulated in a myriad of ways around the world. This is why game companies fight so hard to argue that players receive nothing of true value from their in-game purchases, because an implied value would mean that the company has created an unregulated currency, which is illegal pretty much everywhere.
Yes, but another point you're missing is, if this would become a real thing. It would be more in line of "investing" or call it a stock investment, into Jagex. Meaning if you have their game coins, you invested X amount into their game. Let's say for example a T-bow. The moment they decide to nerf the T-bow and the price drops. It basically means Jagex manipulated the market at this point to change their "stock" value. Which I'm quite sure is not allowed either.
@@nidaleeh that’s not how this works. No government is going to just accept Jagex claiming it’s the same as investing in the company. Stocks are a product with a known, defined value and are highly regulated. Again, there’s a reason even the greediest companies like EA try their damndest in front of congress to convince people that their in game currency has no value; no one wants to step into that minefield willingly.
The block chain doesn't carry the same regulations yet, and it may never. I think Mod Mat K is on the right track with this idea, the future is here and his solution would really impact the black market of this game. I don't think it's a bad take. He's not wrong about the bots either, the game would die within 2 months without them, I think high end content bots need to be removed but the cowhide bots and stuff keep the economy flowing
I disagree with Matt. He said EOC is a good thing because oldschool would not be here without it. But that doesn't mean EOC was a good thing. It means Oldschool was a good thing, in spite of EOC. Oldschool saved Jagex. The community saved Jagex. And as far as his recollection that "player count was trending down each year so we had to do something" (something meaning create EOC). That's not my recollection at all. Sure it may have decreased from its peak but I was in love with the game fall 2011 right before EOC was released. The video content creating community was huge as well. Unless Matt has the ability to see into the future across multiple timelines, he could not have known if runescape would've trended down and faded into oblivion if EOC wasn't released.
As veteran as Mat K is, this was a breath of fresh air. Great show guys! I would love to buy an OSRS server. He's absolutely right about the top games already doing that EDIT: Raikesy was spot on!
Holy moley! The idea of making botting "legal" is just crazy. That would just make the game into a full-fletched cookie clicker. The economy would not even exist anymore... Also, all the blockchain RWT ideas... Just plain terrible. If the bots become truly undetectable then the game would just have to move to more seasonal (leagues-like) content. The private servers idea would definately work very well with this aswell.
Definitely a lot I agree with Mat K. He's a smart one and I wish Jagex would be listening to this. RWT is seen as a big taboo but honestly the more you think about it the more it makes sense. As people get older and have less time to play there needs to be incentive that kinda works like a carrot to keep peoples overall interest up. It's a fact MMO needs people, not bots but ACTUAL people. The driving factor behind successful MMO is healthy and big playerbase. And if you have a lot of different age group people playing the game it just makes it that much richer. If I could make like a cheeseburger from occasionally sending a Vorkath or Zul'rah run I'd be so much more hyped to play as an adult. I agree with Mint that it's sadly very unlikely Jagex will pick up on this but refreshing to hear from Mat nonetheless.
I have a lot of respect for MatK, I don't agree with his opinion on bots though. Yes the prices short term would go up, however generating these items to add to the economy either crafting or receiving the drops would be new money makers for low levels. I remember back in the day mining gold and coal for gp lmao. Isn't that how most western countries operate? the so called 'free market'
Anything to do with the blockchain also causes issues, tornadocash etc for intractability. Scamming would be worse and if you think people also wouldn't try to get around the 5% jagex tax etc. People already use vpns in order to buy bonds at a cheaper price. rwt is a problem for jagex as they have to enforce bans to support sales from people who buy gp via bonds
There's ai now that can play minecraft and add to its own code in order to play more efficiently this is going to cause issues in the future 100%. Bots now can do CG, probably even TOA. Maybe untradeables are the only way...
Don't normally comment but I think Mod Mat K is completely off the mark with his take on botting and RWT. If botting was allowed why wouldn't everyone bot on all their accs to get 99s, items and pets? Add in a RWT system into the game that would incentivize more bots trying to make gp and inflation goes through the roof (like it isn't already...) Also Mod Mat K keeps mentioning to give everyone their own instance so you won't have the problem of competing with bots at Artio for example. But bosses with their own instances are the highest offenders, thinking vorkath, zulrah, gwd, cg etc. You don't even see the hundreds of bots that are inside. Why would you want to go into your own instance of Artio when there would be 10x more bots farming the content now due to instances and you can just buy the item for 100k
You guys need to drop ricecup. Every single time he interrupts or injects his own opinion, its absolute nonsense that does nothing for the conversation. You dont owe him anything, he was never what held this show together. Its always been the amazing guests, and hes bringing down the show by speaking. Love the show, wish we could mute him.
I disagree with what Mod Mat K said about bots. I think that he's coming from a very wise administrative perspective that doesn't want to risk the health of the game, though I don't think people would all of a sudden stop playing Runescape because brews shoot up to 50k, or sharks up to 5k each. I think people will actually start "wanting" to do those things again. There's a reason nobody wants to fish sharks or hunt green swamp lizards: It's a waste of time. You only do it for exp, you make your money doing PVM, which in my eyes is easy to make content for, but ruins the spirit of runescape.
The Stella situation for me.. is like when a little kid tells you his dad works for Jagex and is going to ban you. Except she's an adult saying those things unironically. Deplorable.
How many bots have bought membership over the years? That is also a lot of revenue for Jagex. Maintaining a healthy bot level, banning some that will rebuy membership on a new bot is very beneficial. (Even if they buy bonds to member a bot, that’s still revenue for jagex)
19:30 i dont really understand his reasoning here, surely the price would eventually rise until a players considered it worth their time to fish it again
I'm surprised that someone who worked at Jagex for so long can't easily distinguish between PVP and PKers? Sure, PVPers will find hunting noobs boring, that's why they will fight on PVP worlds at the G.E, but PKers enjoy the predator/prey thing, and Mats suggestion about removing all PVM bosses from the wilderness would literally destroy 'PKing'. I'm surprised Mat wasn't actually challenged on that idea more? He's a great guy but don't be afraid to actually challenge his views properly, at times it seemed like three fan boys that were far too agreeable. I don't mean to be rude, but there's no point in these discussions if it's just 'yeah dude that sounds great' for everything he says.
mat is forward thinking and ur stuck in the moment. 5 years from now pking is going to be dead. gear upgrades will be so far that pking will just be whoever gets the rng for the ko first. its not sustainable. non-pk content is the future of osrs. emotional dimwits might see pking as the foundation of osrs which it prolly was, but things change and its just not the same, not that way anymore. ur delusional mate if u think it is. and jagex isnt going to implement his pvp and pve stats idea
I saved and grinded all winter long for a bowfa 115m+ I finally bought it at 96m and crystal armour then a few days later it was already like 89m the economy the past couple months has went down so bad my bank value goes down by tens of millions per day it’s insane how many bots are on the game now. It has to be close to 50/50 bots vs players if not more bots. And the bots doing pvm are making end game content hardly worth doing. And if they could do raids trust me they would ruin that. And even raids bis items are becoming dirt cheap. Like wtf is going on. ?!!?!?!!
Just ban the gold farmers and stay away from the individuals whom bot. Stay away from botting mains, irons, and people who are just trying to enjoy the single player game. You're stealing away years of people's fun for pride and it weird. Also I love Mat K, he definitly has the wisdom to run this game. You guys gotta let the man preach
@30:30 great insight and has aged well. Just look at the massive success of Palworld which is focused around player owned servers. Of course stuff happening on private servers wouldn't be transferable back to main game to keep main game integrity but If i could run my own private server with boosted xp rates etc my family members that are married and have kids etc would actually try out the game if the skill grinding was negligible.
Imagine bringing Mod Matt on and then talking over him the entire podcast. Let the man talk! Not a good look. My first and only time attending this podcast.
This podcast would be a 10x better if ricecup didn't speak. They honestly shouldn't have told him his mic was muted in the beginning. Would have been a blessing.

1:18:17 confirmed Bot Management will be the next skill added to OSRS
Really though I disagree, if no bots picked flax, and flax prices went up due to scarcity, I would be out picking flax as a money maker - in essence the scenario he's describing has the assumption that every player wants to be out bossing and killing whatever the latest content released is constantly.
Yeah nobody picks flax anymore, not even Bots. it drops en-masse from slayer and bosses like Zulrah/Vorkath
1:19:56 what is this ???
Insane nonsense. Kind of shocking to hear this from a an ex-senior member. I don’t even know where to begin breaking down how ridiculous his arguments are
mat k just sitting back in disbelief as three clueless boys try to talk about blockchain lol
Mat K must be delusional if he actually thinks Bots are a net positive to the game experience.
@@MrBa143 Want a bot-infested game for the rest of eternity? Keep advocating for cheaters.

His private servers idea is a great idea. His thinking botting should be allowed is a terrible idea lol. Interesting conversation nonetheless.
Ricecup is too outspoken for such little contribution. A lot of words / interrupts to repeat what someone just said or a point that has no merit / immediately falls apart after a millisecond of thought.
It was annoying the shit outta me! Half the time he doesn't even answer the question or makes no additional point than whats already been said.

@@sasukefaan every regular player has +1b bank? lol wtf?

RiceCup I think you should work on your ability to form sentences. Think about what you want to say before starting to talk. 70% of you talking is just filler "you know" "umm" "like". I don't know if it's because in order to be able to talk you gotta be the first one to open their mouth but after a while it gets annoying. Maybe little more respect on each other and let everyone talk so people don't feel like they need to rush with their thoughts to get their voice heard

1:13:05 that did not age well 😅
I wouldn’t say people being forced to pick flax or other “menial” tasks due to the elimination of bots would be a bad thing for the community, if you talk to most people they love the early stages of the game where you’re progressing and having to do tasks like that , I’ve had more fun doing stuff like that than any boss or raid tbh
Easy fix for that "Ironman".
@@oscaroliv9668 not at all because with an Ironman you’re mostly excluded from the community with being unable to trade or pk properly.
Mat coming up with very interesting ideas, great cast
dont agree that botting is essential for the game just cuz it makes prices cheaper. Prices being cheaper isnt a good thing. It devalues skilling massively. People only dont do a lot of those things currently BECAUSE they are so devalued to the point its not worth their time.
ricecup talks too much about literally nothing.
Jagex could put in NPCs to vendor flax and fish, etc. Actual bots.
That old minigame i think it was fist of guthix where you run around with the rock and switch to kill or be killed. That was a lot of fun and pvp. Get that in osrs
I completely agree. I was terrible at it but it was still so fun. Everyone massed in the middle fighting, people fleeing. It was classic fun
@@A_Goat I remember my main tactic was to look for the biggest pile of players and sit on that spot.
This was super disappointing. You guys got a pretty exclusive opportunity to extract some really interesting ideas, information, etc. from one of the biggest jagex legends of all time. As much as I enjoy hearing from you 3, I really wish you would have let the man talk!
seriously nailed it with this one.
Try telling that to the thousands of shitty mobile gacha games.
You pay IRL money for "premium" in game currency.
I'll watch anything with Matt K, he's got a perspective almost no front facing creators have 👏👍
I disagree with Matt.
Removing bots would destroy the market for a bit but it would force people to engage in stuff they didnt do for years
If they ever allow botting they shouldn't be allowed to gain exp and boss ranks. Its ridiculous that we have to compete against a bot for ranks.
As veteran as Mat K is, this was a breath of fresh air. Great show guys! I would love to buy an OSRS server. He's absolutely right about the top games already doing that
EDIT: Raikesy was spot on!
This was genuinely hard to watch. Poor matt
Halo 3 was another classic example of a game that had its lifetime massively extended by including a space for players to create their own content
Omg let mod mat k talk lol
I hope Mat sees this but the example of the minecraft AI is called 'Voyager'
Don't normally comment but I think Mod Mat K is completely off the mark with his take on botting and RWT. If botting was allowed why wouldn't everyone bot on all their accs to get 99s, items and pets? Add in a RWT system into the game that would incentivize more bots trying to make gp and inflation goes through the roof (like it isn't already...)
Also Mod Mat K keeps mentioning to give everyone their own instance so you won't have the problem of competing with bots at Artio for example.
Why doesn't Mod Matt think the drop tables can be adjusted to combat the loss of production from bots?
Cause rs3 does that and makes skilling worthless
@@xWOLFxBLITZER But the bots would be gone. And skilling does not need to be profitable. The benefits are in the utilities unlocked at higher levels.
You guys need to drop ricecup. Every single time he interrupts or injects his own opinion, its absolute nonsense that does nothing for the conversation.
You dont owe him anything, he was never what held this show together. Its always been the amazing guests, and hes bringing down the show by speaking.
Love the show, wish we could mute him.
love having minty for some long form podcast content
I disagree with what Mod Mat K said about bots. I think that he's coming from a very wise administrative perspective that doesn't want to risk the health of the game, though I don't think people would all of a sudden stop playing Runescape because brews shoot up to 50k, or sharks up to 5k each. I think people will actually start "wanting" to do those things again. There's a reason nobody wants to fish sharks or hunt green swamp lizards: It's a waste of time. You only do it for exp, you make your money doing PVM, which in my eyes is easy to make content for, but ruins the spirit of runescape.
2:38:48 we need a nice GIF of Mint here. "whaling on noobs" *shaking head with smile*
Can someone recap for me in a quick summary what do they mean by "played owned servers" ?
Whatever happened to the podcast?
The Stella situation for me.. is like when a little kid tells you his dad works for Jagex and is going to ban you. Except she's an adult saying those things unironically. Deplorable.
And its different because her boyfriend did work for jagex
My dad is jagex
i cant believe how different everyone looks from the last episode
Mat K just full of all sorts of good ideas!
How many bots have bought membership over the years? That is also a lot of revenue for Jagex. Maintaining a healthy bot level, banning some that will rebuy membership on a new bot is very beneficial. (Even if they buy bonds to member a bot, that’s still revenue for jagex)
How many people have quit because of all the bots and RWT?
honestly just returned from my most recent break and the botting is out fo control every bot in the wildy bosses over 3k kc no other stats is unreal

Rice cup is such a cornball with his culture talk. Smh
Are you not player killing on PVP worlds, at the GE anymore?
I legit rejoined osrs to play stealing creations (i did zero research) i played that game all day back in the day
I saved and grinded all winter long for a bowfa 115m+ I finally bought it at 96m and crystal armour then a few days later it was already like 89m the economy the past couple months has went down so bad my bank value goes down by tens of millions per day it’s insane how many bots are on the game now.

I also wonder what is the threshold of amount a bots where it becomes detrimental to the game? How many bots are needed compared to actual players.
I love when u guys have mat on
Imagine bringing Mod Matt on and then talking over him the entire podcast. Let the man talk! Not a good look. My first and only time attending this podcast.
