  • "Suzhou River (Chinese: 苏州河; pinyin: Sūzhōu Hé) is a 2000 film noir by Lou Ye about a tragic love story set in contemporary Shanghai. The film, though stylistically distinct, is typical of "Sixth Generation" Chinese filmmakers in its subject matter of contemporary China's gritty urban experience. The film stars Zhou Xun in a dual role as two different women and Jia Hongsheng as a man obsessed with finding a woman from his past." - Wikipedia

    Great film but ending could’ve been better. Mardar and Meimei should have remained together with him believing she is Moudan instead of discovering Moudan in the store and dying with her.

    • @r.p.6452
      @r.p.6452 4 місяці тому +2

      What? No. It was the perfect ending. Meimei left the narrator because she discovered what true love is (what Mardar felt for Moudan) and she envied that... So are we. Because who would actually seek their lover for their whole life? Very few because we are accustomed to think that, as the narrator said at end, nothing last forever!

      Just finished the movie a few minutes ago and I have to agree. But one thing that I’m confused is when moudan head leaning on mardar’s shouders she said “let’s go home” I don’t get the depiction of them dying in the river? They have found one another more so with mardar. Shouldn’t it be a happy ending per se?

    • @plumeria66

      @@leonlai5805 Glad you see it the same way. I guess after the kidnapping, her family wouldn’t have wanted them together. So they did the Romeo and Juliet thing. That’s why I felt it was anticlimactic when they died together and not very original or satisfying. Plus, their names were confusing because of all these M’s.

      @@plumeria66 i was thinking about it, laying in bed and i think its to do with when moudan first jumped into the river. They met at the convenience store years later. She said take me home while her head was leaning against mardar's shoulders. Probably they went out together signifying their love for each other. But the next few scenes later you see a mardar's wrecked motorbike. I dont know speaking and re analysing it. Think the director wanted Eveyone to have their own interpretation of how they died.
