  • Erik, the Asian Movie Enthusiast presents:
A review of “Suzhou River”, a Chinese drama/romance from 2000.
The movie opens with narration from a man who is a videographer who is hired by a night club to shoot their “mermaid show”, which is basically some girls in mermaid outfits who jump and swim in a big fish tank - the purpose of which is to attract customers. One of these actresses is a young woman by the name of Meimei (played by Zhou Xun). Our narrator quickly falls for her but her personality is a bit odd. She’s quirky and will cometimes get sad for no apparent reason; she also disappears for days on end, leaving our narrator in suspense until her return.
After we get a feel for these lovebirds, the narrator tells the story of another character - a deliveryman named Mardar who falls in love with a girl named Moudan (also played by Zhou Xun). The problem is that this deliveryman is involved with some shady people, which eventually creates a rift between the two lovebirds.
A mysterious art-house film with a great performance by Zhou Xun.

What a fantastic lead actress, gritty hand held style - presumably because of the censorship issues? and characters - one of the best films from China ever

Xun Zhou is just amazing in this: as are the changes in the landscape of Shanghai and particularly around Shanghai Railway station.

Watching the extras on my DVD, I learnt that the movie did not go through censure and is then illegal. That explains the documentary first person style of shooting. Great review and thanks again for all your videos !

Oh man, that is a long time ago i've seen that movie.
    Thanks for reminding me.
Should watch it again because i don't remember it very well. I think i liked it.
I don't know, 2000 was a difficult year for me.
I only remember that it was well-recieved international.
And that there was a controversy about the director and the China Goverment.
Hey Eric do you like arthouse films?
Have you seen "The Tale of Iya?
It's a long and slow film, but it has very beautiful imagery of Iya.
Acting is quite good. Rina Takeda (from Karate Girl, Dead Sushi) plays her best performence ever as Haruna.

Thanks. I've seen and enjoyed a ton of art-house films, but I have not seen "The Tale of Iya." I love Rina Takeda, so I'm surprised that one slipped under my radar. Thanks for bringing it to my attention.

Is this film in the genre of The Double Life of Veronique and the Japanese film Love Letter (1995) ?

There may be a few vague similarities to Love Letter, but Suzhou River has a very different story arc and aesthetic.

It was watchable, thanks to the short run time, but a bit too confusing. In the end, I didn't really get which guy was which, and having an affair with which girl.

I think Suzhou Creek is and was beautiful. It's an other worldly cityscape.
