for the people that don’t know yes if you buy a new modem you have to give your internet provider the mac ID for your new modem so they can activate it on your account. that’s the only way you can even use it
i was sooo confused on why mine wasn't working. i have to register it? haha alright. the set up looks really easy. i just didn't try to open up the internet. good to know. thank you a ton for your video
I see an issue at the cable splitter. Modem is running off -7db loss instead of the -3.5db leg of the splitter. I'd recommend picking up a Antronix 2 way splitter to replace 3 way you're using since one output isn't being used. Don't want open outputs on the splitters like that.
I have Xfinity and upgraded to this modem. It worked nice for about a week. Then I started to get lag and disconnections. Got tired of resetting and powering down and up. Called Comcast, but because they are not fleecing you with a rental fee, all they can do is verify that the service is up and running. So I decided to return it back to Amazon, and got the Motorola MB8600. Much more user intuitive interface, better support, cheaper, and has been flawless going on 7 months now. Not a single hiccup. Oh did I mention it is lightning fast? I don't know why UA-cam is so obsessed with the Netgear.
I use lan port 1 to connect to my modem My question is lan port 2 on the modem can’t connect to anything I’ve tried connecting it to my playstation and pc no luck any suggestions ?
you should be able to connect to it. I connect my personal cloud storage straight into the port and it is visible to any devices that is connected through this modem.
Hey question how do i get the passcode for the modem i have a cm500 modem but cant seem to find the passcode for it do i need to create one or something
Type in 192.168.100.1 on your browser and the default for most of the modem has "admin" as user and "password" as password. Try to log in with that and see if you can access your device. Then you can change the setting from there.
i just upgraded to this modem and i have the same router that you have and my speeds went down lol. Any idea on how to speed it up? I pay for 1 gig with cox and I'm getting barely 300. I was getting almost 500 with my old modem
I don't know how the experience is like with Cox, but for Xfinity my number fluctuate too. I think it also depends on the time of the day you do your test. I just did a test and it is 1:24pm right now and it is 355mps. Maybe your older modern is better ;-) Honestly as long as I can do what I want smoothly without internet dropping (like my older modern), I don't really mind what the actual number reads. I have 2 devices streaming, 1 computer on Zoom and about 5 devices browsing.
The new modem you have is probably not compatible with yer ISP network protocols. Or at least not configured correctly for them. This is a very common and almost always overlooked issue with these, "stop renting" videos. Comcast ipv6 protocols are blocked by Netgear equipment for example. So even if you use the netgear modem, you will never get the gigabit speed that you may be paying for. All becuase Netgear blocks all ICMP traffic essential for ipv6 for "security" reasons. Even on IPv4, you get lower speeds. All the isp's are starting to adapt odd protocols to hinder this "stop renting" movement. But Netgears awful support and router software doesnt help either. Other modems and routers have ways to pass the protocols to get closer to the stated speeds. With netgear, the only way to do this is with Open Firmwares. But that is a whole nother can of worms to crack open. Unfortunately, due to the nature of the networks environmental conditions. You may not always get stated network speeds. It is crappy, but not much can be done about it. I pay comcast for their gig connection. Supposed 1200mb down. I tried three different modems, Surfboard, Netgear and some other oddball brand I cannot remember off the top of my head at the moment. None of them were able to connect anywhere near the stated speeds. Despite each one stating they are fully compatible with comcasts network. WIth the xFi gateway I was getting ipv4 speeds of 338-460mb down all the time, and 988mb down for ipv6. But with the other modems the best I could do was at most 780mb on a fantastic day, but most the time stuck close to 570-590mb down with ipv6 and around 170mb down via ipv4. I ended up staying with the xFi gateway from comcast. Plus with the new fee for unlimited data, we get a combined unlimited data and modem rental fee which is now less than the unlimited data fee was by itself prior.
SpecsBattle Do your know if i can call somebody and get them to run fiber lines in my area? There is fiber in my neighborhood, I just can’t get it to my house it says.
the SB8200 by Arris and the CM1200 by Netgear are BOTH great docsis 3.1 modems and essentially they're the same...HOWEVER, i would give the edge to Netgear just from personal experience with the brand!
@@bretztheman I actually bought the Motorola mb8600 DOCSIS 3.1 modem and I gotta say that it is WAY better than my arris 8200 that I had. The Motorola modem stays cooler than the arris and my arris actually overheated so yea never getting that modem ever again
@@chocolatemilk9102 plant extensions cost bigggg money to build out. $22 per foot then there’s the materials etc. a standard run plant extension for 1 customer can be like $8K-$10K !!!!! However that amount is small potatoes to a major telecos company like verizon , att, or xfinity. A good way to guarantee them building a fiber extension / set up...is if MANY people request it, like a lot! this is not a router, just a modem. the multiple ethernet ports are for link aggregation, where you can pair 2 ethernert cables together to a supporting router and get double speeds
Hi Dominick, unfortunately this modem doesn't have fiber optic option. You can look for modems with PON (passive optical network) online, but I think AT&T has to provide those for you. My dad has a PON modem from Xfinity and I can't find a third party modem for him...
BTW, you said megabytes in the video when you’re referring to megabits. Mbps = megabits per second. MBps = megabytes per second. To convert megabits to megabytes, you divide by 8, as there are 8 bits in a byte.

Does this modem and router work with spectrum internet? Thank you!
Call spectrum and ask or google spectrum router compatibility. They usually might have a list
It says spectrum on the box so it should work with that company.
