    I am Japanese.
The United States and Japan hated each other and fought.
My grandfather also fought The United States.
76 years later, the United States and Japan have an unprecedented friendship.
Friendship and love prove that hatred can be overcome.

I had a chance to visit the museum In Hiroshima and the images on display there were even worse than in the video. It was heartbreaking. Oh and the drawings at the end of the video are real, they’re on display as you’re exiting the museum. They’re all done by kids who drew what they saw

Thank you for this reaction! I know it was very uncomfortable and tough to make with this version of the MV. We all feel it
It would be a huge understatement to narrow down the 20+ years of history of Dir en Grey to Obscure and shocking MVs that are quite old tbh. And this is not an attempt to offend you in any way since you've seen only these types of songs. They are never doing shock content for the sake of scaring people or being weird/different from anyone. This is not the case. There is always a hidden message that the band usually doesn't explain to the listeners. For me, it feels like they are trying to push us to think at least a little bit about what can be behind the creepy stuff that they show for example in Obscure. This greatly narrows the possible audience who is ready to try to understand the music instead of leaving or claiming DeG as freaks. But I think it's for the best
As for the Vinushka, I will give you just a little bit of info (I want to apologize to people who often see my comments and say that I am sorry to repeat myself every time but I genuinely think that this is important). Never be scared of reading DeG's lyrics because they will for sure provide a much more clear picture. As for the Vinushka, no places or persons are mentioned. This is a decision of the video production team (probably in cooperation with the band but I don't know for sure) to connect this song with historic events. They are using the real footage of the victims of Hiroshima and Nagasaki so a lot of people decide that there is a direct connection, which there is not. Although, if you'll read the lyrics and still think about it as a song about war - this is you right. The band and Kyo as a lyricist almost never comment on the meaning so you have all the freedom to interpret the poetry as you wish. Just to provide you with another view I will say that for me it is a song about evil and good in general. That concerns any actions and decisions that we make. We always claim other people but never try to look at the situation from a different angle while often things are not what they seem to be
I would be very happy to see Dir en Grey on your channel in the future! My recommendations are Diabolos (ua-cam.com/video/DggLg2kl9RY/v-deo.html) and Conceived Sorrow ua-cam.com/video/khGIElV-5-s/v-deo.html). The second one is a ballad and would be a good choice if you'd like to explore a more gentle and slow side of their music
Anyways, thank you for the video, and hope you'll have a great day or night! ✨

Thank you 🖤 I think it's really good to have that information stuff, especially if someone is just discovering the band! I just couldn't do it. I felt kind of bad but there have been SO many Vinushka reactions recently and while I don't want to just copy-paste my old comments I still want to write whatever comes to my mind while watching the reaction or just use the comment section for usually private debates with myself ^^''. So it's great to know that there are always other people who will provide that knowledge and thought x3
As for the lyrics: I just noticed that my comment could be read in a totally stupit way I did not intend ^^'. Of course I want to encourage everyone to read the lyrics and connect to them on a personal bases but for a first reaction I think it can be a good experience to just concentrate on the music and feeling as well - on the one hand because it's really difficult to do everything at once [listening, watching, reading and interpreting] and still give the same amount of concentration to everything and second because once you are familiar with the lyrics it's difficult to 'disconnect' the song from them and I found that I personally really like that experience when I listen to a new song for the first time. I can imagine my own words behind the melodies and emotions and attribute different stories to the instruments - after all most of their songs are written before the lyrics so it's interesting to me to see them seperated at first and after taking some time with the lyrics think about the inspiration they gave to them. With a lot of their videos, it always felt to me like that was exactly what their director did. Vinushka with these two heavy parts that collide perfectly with the two atomic bombs - the very calm part in between where the black rain starts to fall etc. So in a way, not knowing the lyrics can be an opportunity to find your own voice in the music, if that makes any sense. [I just had to imagine Kyo reading this thinking: Yeah. No one understands my damn lyrics. Not even the director. Doesn't even care for them. And now people are making stuff up completely 😅 I feel sorry - but that's art. The moment it's out there everyone can do with it whatever they want ^^''] -

Passio - I totally understand you! Copy and paste is not a method for me when I’m writhing a comment because well, I want to make it personalized and answer the questions that a certain reactor asks in the video. And my comment about reading the lyrics definitely wasn’t mentioned to oppose you! I didn’t even read yours at this angle honestly. It was just because one of the guys said that after watching the MV he is even more scared to read the lyrics so I wanted kind of express my support by saying that they are not as scary and direct as you would think (I mean they are not pleasant for sure but if you’ll read them only as poetry, it’s much more easy). And I totally agree with your saying that sometimes it is better to listen to the song at first and just after read the lyrics/story/etc. This is my case in 99% of times because I am not a native speaker so it’s quite hard for me to concentrate on everything. So, I’m always giving a link to the videos with subs just in case and never ever will get mad if people are not paying attention to them :) Thank you for always starting very interesting discussions in the comments even if you do it with yourself! I really have no people in real life to talk about Dir en grey or sukekiyo so just seeing that there are people like you out there that love them just as much is so great. I tried some fan forums a while ago and a lot of people just seem more concerned with the guys personal lives and speculatios etc than about the music, lyrics and art :(. Like I am very open to discovering new bands but I certainly don’t want to see k-pop in chats dedicated to Dir en Grey and it is not because I am so snobby or hate this kind of music (I don’t) but it’s just not the purpose. The lyrics of this song makes no direct reference to WW2. The lyrics describes about a criminal who has been sentenced to death, and about various views on the death (anger, sadness, and delightedness). Of course this song is not intended to inflame hatred against the US. Japanese hate war, but do not hate the US.

They may not have had originally written the song that way, but they continue putting war footages for live visuals, now including more recent ones (of Middle East from the looks of it) so they definitely lean more in that direction

    • @Zedem0n
      @Zedem0n 3 роки тому +3

That's because you shouldn't take the lyrics too literally... It's a metaphore for what happened at Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Those people in those cities were sentenced to death. The lyrics mirror what happened for those people who were put on death row because "their existence was a sin". Just like when people are sentenced to death the notion is that their existence is a sin and they need to be purged from the World for the "greater good of society". The lyrics question wether men have the power to judge other men as if they were substitues for a Higher Power (God ?).
That's why they have to put those visuals and they keep pushing for these visuals in their clip and live video screens. Because at the end of the day, that's actually what they're talking about : the atomic bombings of Hiroshima & Nagasaki. And in a broader sense, any atomic bombing of any civilians.

Thank you for reacting to this video and giving me an opportunity to watch this one.
Well, when Cory-san kept reminding Michael-san ( again and again ) that this video was NOT the one censored, I just thought it would be something that showed scary, grotesque worms like the other video you two reacted to just the other day.
So...THIS was not what I had in mind.
Actually, what piqued my interest ( first ) was the name DIR EN GREY ( which I had never listened to up until today ).
I have heard everywhere that the lead singer's shouts/growls are as good as Minami's from Fear and Loathing, so...I was like 'Why not ? :) '. Then...THIS.
( And...yes, when it showed a half-burnt baby who was bombed out and obviously exposed to radiation, I had tears in my eyes. )
Well...I mainly learnt what happened in the past through videos and books. And since both my Japanese and Norwegian grandpas were way too small and young to go to war, I could not learn much from them, I admit. ( My Norwegian grandpa vaguely remembered when his hometown had been occupied by the Germans though. Said the officers/soldiers there were fairly nice to him and other kids, well. )
The music ? The first half of it was so nice and beautiful in a ballad sort of way. Well, the last half was a...different story. It showed what our fellow humans could do to each other in the madness of war...AND it came with such intense screaming vocals coming from somewhere deep inside the soul of the lead singer. It was good.
Just...too sad, you know. All of this. Something I ( We ) do not want to see happen again.
Again, thank you so much for this and that and all the time you have made for this. :')

I really can not watch that video without tearing up every time so I am glad I am not the one being filmed watching it and maybe that's why I prefer suggesting the live version as well. But your comment again made me think of how important it is to keep that memory and show these pictures because we have to be remindest that we never ever want something like this to happen again! Sometimes I wish I could just send this to every person being paid to work on weapons, be it mechanic, nuclear, chemical or biological. It's scary and and so incomprehendable to think that people go to work every day creating stuff that is meant to kill [thousands]. And they are normal people, too. Soldiers in wars are normal people. But because each of them thinks they are doing the right thing or the only thing they can do we are capable of creating this mass destruction.
I would really urge you to watch some of their other videos and their live content! Some, like Michael said seem grotesque or vulgar [they actually have an album called vulgar ^^] and made only for shock value but there is a meaning behind each imagine and especially in pop-culture people sometimes need grotesque imagery to even start listening - Dir en grey and their director sometimes seem to play with this, using this over the top imagery and shaping it into strong metaphors. They are very much concerned with people and society and all forms of pain that can befall the individual and mankind. Kyo mostly communicates through raw emotions so they are not always easy to watch but very rewarding! I hope you will like them :)

You should not think you have made wrong, because history was made by generation and different thinking. The only thing that can make us guilty, even japanese people, is to think the war should continu, some country think like that and it's not good, people live greedy of money and power.

Some youtubers have extremely inappropriate reactions and maybe I think this is because of the fact that this song is some heavy food for the brain which has to be processed in solitude. At least for me it was, anyway this song and video really express now the thought of one of my favorite authors - "It is so short and jumbled and jangled, Sam, because there is nothing intelligent to say about a massacre. Everybody is supposed to be dead, to never say anything or want anything ever again. Everything is supposed to be very quiet after a massacre, and it always is, except for the birds."

Reading the comments I feel like I have to clear up a few things. Of course I don't claim ultimate knowledge but Kyo [the singer and lyricist] never talks about his lyrics and leaves them completely to the listeners own interpretation. I read that comment before that it is about a criminal being sentenced to death but when I read the lyrics I don't see that anywhere - they are pretty poetic and difficult to translate as well. I really think just listening to the music and FEEL the words might be the better option sometimes. I've written my view on the lyrics so often now and I don't really want to repeat myself over and over again even though I know you would read that for the first time. I think, in the end you are perfectly capable of making up your own mind about them - just like Dir en grey intend you to do. Anyhow, here is a live version with english subtitles [provided by Kayaちゃんねる]
    ua-cam.com/video/BVhAVHcu-r0/v-deo.html
The second thing I want to mention is David's claim that Japan is more likely to sing/talk about topics like this: This is not the case. Speaking ones own mind in a pubic place let alone criticising the system or breaking the silence on topics as these is still very uncommon in Japan for the simple fact that they pretty much live in two worlds: You just don't talk about any uncomfortable or personal topics in public. Although this is changing slowly you really won't find many people speaking openly [especially in public or to a stranger!] in most of Japan.
America seems to have another issue alltogether: You have a free media and everything - but you only ever seem to be intersted in your own point of view. I've talked with a lot of americans the past year and I know that every school is different but just looking at the curriculums is really weird from an outside view and with most people I have been really shocked at how little they knew about the world in general but also about their own history. This is a main reason America has been disliked in a lot of countries for the past years. Because this patriotic schooling makes some Americans believe that their country is always in the right and that other countries need to be 'fixed' [e.g. when it comes to personal freedom, political systems etc] - although they seem to know very little about these other countries.
Then again, I don't think one can blame everything on the school system any longer. Most people have the internet now and we can make use of that. We don't have to depent entirely on our government/curriculum anymore when it comes to the knowledge we want to aquire.
I really loved your genuine reaction and this was more a general observation [I did not mean you in particular - being homeschooled and all - but was more talking about a general observation which is entirely my own - although it is true that America is not well liked were I live ^^''. I think it is a problem when people start seeing a "country" without seeing its people and individual problems any longer because then you start to generalize and it's much easier to simply dislike something when you don't really know what it is you dislike and detain yourself from seeing the beautiful things you might like]
So Thank you for this reaction! If you ever want to get back to them, I really want to recommend their song Kuukoku no Kyouon. They've been around for 24 years now so they have a lot of different sounds to choose from :)

@@pierretaka6085 Yes. And I really don't see it there ^^''. I know that criminals sometimes hang themselves when being incarcerated or sentenced to death but there really are a lot of other scenarious this could we aplied to. That image also takes a big part in sukekiyo's MUTANS. So for me it is not the criminal or the crime that is in the center here but their willingness and reason to choose suicide after all the full sentence says: 価値を見出せず 首縊り十三階段
I want to make it clear that I am learning Japanese for only about 1.5 years now and mostly on my own so I know that I am a completle beginner and I know that Kaya is fantastic! But I have been wondering about her translation of that sentence since to my knowledge 首縊りdescribes the act of hanging yourself. [so that sentence might actually be an oxymoron - on the other hand you could argue that a person who commits a crime that he KNOWS he will be sentenced to death for might commit some kind of suicide].
Kaya mostly refers to an ameba blog of someone who interprets the song as questioning the death penalty but I just think it's important to know that every interpretation is a personal one. As soon as you have made up your mind what something [a song, a novel, a movie, a picture] is about you can usually find clues to strenghen your point - that doesn't make it the only possibillity.
To give you an example, I could interpret that entire song as being a dedication to Yumeno Kyuusaku because Kyo mentions Dogra Magra in the lyrics [and that is certainly interesting! It adds all that freudian psychoanalyses stuff to it]- now I suddenly notice that he also speaks of vajra and actors and that Kyuusaku-san once was both a No-Teacher and a buddhist priest. Now I start to ignore all the rest - just like the person writing the blog ignored these aspects in favour of her death-penalty interpretation. With Kyo's lyrics it's so difficult to find ONE interpretation that really connects with all the things he is talking about. But that is exactly what I find so fazinating about tem because if you decide to read the lyrics for YOURSELF and not just go by any interpretation that you've read and that sounded sound to you - you can get in a kind of dialoque between the lyrics and yourself and that will give you a much bigger satisfaction then even KNOWING what Kyo had in mind while writing them [which no-one but he can actually know].

This is not just only WWII. It's not about who's doing more damage. All countries in the past have had a history of war. And because of the war, many innocent lives have been lost. Remember the pain and emptiness. I'm from a place not directly related to WWII, but I can definitely feel it.

Hey guys, great video! If you still haven't seen the lyrics, I recommend a live version from the channel 'perixreloaded' but direngreyvideoz also does an excellent job.
There's one line from this that always gets me, especially since he's hitting his highest notes when he sings it:
'Seeing you like this, it's just so/too sad'
I love this line because it is unclear who 'you' is
is it Japan? Victims of the attack? Or does it refer to the darkest, lowest lows of mankind on display?

Love me some Dir En Grey, first song that got me into them was 'Different Sense' after I read an article in NEO magazine where they use tentacle hentai in their music video to describe the current state of Japan at the time.
Love the vids and reactions, could I request Cannibal Corpse - Inhumane Harvest, pretty please?

My Request would be the GazettE Ugly (another one to disturb Michael most likely xD) and Blinding Hope one of their latest Songs because they drop a New Album on May 26th 👍🏻 they are also from Japan and Visual Kei Metal as Dir En Grey 🤘🏻
But Yeah the Video is very tough to Look at but i also appreciate that Japan is so open to talk/sing about Topics like this because barely anyone Else is doing it like Japan is doing it

One little thing nobody talks about is the song title. The band didn't really need to put effort in it so much to take the word from another language but they went and found the word for "guilt that feels big and/or personal to someone" and made it the title to a song like this.
