  • The minor pentatonic scale is only five notes, which means that there are two notes missing. And one of those notes is the sweetest note we could possibly have -- so we want it back in! Learn how to add the 2 (also known as the 9) back into the minor pentatonic scale so your guitar solos will have that added harmonic richness. Perfect for classic and progressive rock, jazzy RnB solos, and even the blues.
    This guitar lesson is from Vancouver teacher Blue Morris.

    This is so interesting because I try to use the Aeolian mode more than the Pentatonic for the same reasons that you gave......it gives more opportunities to bend, slide, hammer, pull-off etc etc. This is so much fun!! Thank you and I wish you a happy week ahead :)

    Great lesson again! The sound of ending on one of these notes reminds me somehow of James Bond😅
    I also like to play it over a minor ballad type of song, especially in the easy shape on the g string when you slide back and forth from 4th fret to 5th fret.

    Dorian is such a cool sounding mode. It’s distinct yet subtle. You can totally hear it but it doesn’t standout like say the raised 7th in minor (harmonic). I can’t really think of any Page licks with it. Did he ever use it to your knowledge?

    I think of it as the 7th of the Major scale. Instead of A Min, I see it as C Maj (It's all the same notes). So, ending a line on the 7th resolving to the root makes more sense to me, instead of ending on the 2 resolving to the 3rd. Depends how you look at it I guess.

    • @GuitarLessonsVancouver
      @GuitarLessonsVancouver  Рік тому

      That makes sense. It is the same note. Whatever gets you there I think is good.

    • @idoob4720
      @idoob4720 Рік тому

      @@GuitarLessonsVancouver I've been thinking about this in terms of the chord function within the scale. Interesting enough the I and the III are both considered tonic, so that makes sense to resolve to either one. The difference is the ii is sub dominant and the Vii is considered dominant. So, although they are the same note, whether you are thinking in terms of A min or C Maj, the function of the note within the scale changes. Which is how the modes work pretty much anyway .. right? Not to mention the Vii is diminished vs a minor ii. You got me thinking anyway..

    Another great lesson. Isn’t the 2 and the 6 parts of the natural minor scale? Sometimes I throw in the 6 also.

    • @GuitarLessonsVancouver
      @GuitarLessonsVancouver  Рік тому +1

      Thanks! Yes the full minor scale would have those, but we have to be more careful with that 6 because there are minor 6s and major 6s depending on the the type of minor key. The loop I use in this video would require a major 6, but a natural minor scale would be a minor 6. That get's more complicated, which is why I love the 2. It's the same in both so you don't really need to think about it.

    • @CD_Character
      @CD_Character Рік тому

      Adding the Major 6th gives you the Dorian scale (a la Carlos Santana). Adding the Major 2nd to the minor pentatonic gets you halfway there.
      I think this would sound perfect with this backing track !
      (Oops. I see that I wasn't the first to say this, but it's worth repeating.)

      @@GuitarLessonsVancouver Yeah, I do really like the sound of the 2. I guess the trouble with the 6 , at least for me, is whether to play the 6 or the flat 6, Dorian or Aeolian.
