BREAK OUT of the Pentatonic with Double Stops
Вставка
- Опубліковано 16 чер 2023
- These simple suggestions will help you break out of the pentatonic scale by harmonizing melodies on the guitar using thirds, and Jimi Hendrix style double stops -- play two notes at once, easily!
Are your guitar solos and improv all sounding the same? Feeling stuck in the pentatonic scale? Double Stops are a quick and easy way of playing bigger, two-note at the same time licks in your solos. And they are an essential guitar technique. They help our lines sound more connected with the chords underneath.

Here's the best thing about GLV channel. It teaches music theory without actually discussing much theory! It encourages actual playing and understanding the theory while playing. Thank you 🥰
Well said thank you :)
Maybe your best lesson yet. You make things so easy to understand.. I stopped looking at lessons on other channels and am going through all your old ones..
Thanks! Glad it's helping. Lots more on our Patreon too if you haven't already checked that out patreon.com/GuitarLessonsVancouver
That's a Great lesson. So easy to understand & adds so much so easily! Thank you.
Glad to hear it thanks! Lots more lessons on the channel and on our Patreon www.patreon.com/guitarlessonsvancouver
Finally a system to put it together little by little.. I had the bits and pieces, but could not really jam well, or make good riffs, this is helping some.
Cool glad it helped 👍
Great lesson. Loads of potential in these ideas. Thanks!
Great! Thanks Brian!
I love that style of playing! Thanks
Cool thanks! There's another new video on double stops here from last week: ua-cam.com/video/Qb0B1z-byjU/v-deo.html

Great, see you on Patreon! You can message me on Patreon if you have any questions www.patreon.com/guitarlessonsvancouver
Idk if you have some idea of your reaching, here I'm on Brazil learning a lot of things from your channel, and I'm unable to describe how amazing was to find your channel and being able to learn from you being so far.
I own much of my recent learning to your lessons, much of the freedom on the guitar came from lessons like these, knowledge which I'm very thankful for being shared here
Thank you! Lots more lessons like this on the channel and our Patreon group www.patreon.com/guitarlessonsvancouver
Pretty cool!
Thanks QBRX!
Having played guitar for many years.
Still I got inspired in some way. And that's a good thing.
It wasn't the lesson in itself that got me to reach for the guitar, I think it was that you actually play more than talking.
I think that that's what a good teacher does? Let the student listen to the tones more than learning the theory behind it.
Subscribing! ❤
Thanks! Welcome to the channel 😀
Great lesson again! I really like that you show us so much different examples of how to use these things. Know what I´m sayin?😉 I think that that´s what makes it so good to understand. Thank you for that!
Thanks! 😃 I do know what you're saying! Thanks for watching and commenting
I've been playing guitar for way too long and can't solo. This lesson makes sense
Glad to hear it! Lots more coming!
Before I watch the rest of this video, I just wanna say after seeing your previous video and then this, this is exactly the type of guitar content I need. I can make the use of SOME mixed notes when I play my solos, but it's pretty limited to sus2's and sus4s when Im playing basic triads. I feel like I'm in this weird limbo between intermediate and novice because I can play most things if I really try to learn it and know a decent amount of theory and can write my own solos and songs and riffs, but there's just something missing still I can't find. Even when I play other scales outside the pentatonic rut, I find myself going back anyway because of my blues roots. There's just something so sweet about those shapes, but I wish I had more versatility with that, such as what you're showing in this video. I'm gonna be checking out more of your videos after this one too. Cheers
Thanks, yeah these double stops help with that a lot. Lots more other videos on my channel that can help with that. Maybe try my video "The Magic Scale" if you haven't already seen that one: ua-cam.com/video/giAAVurIcmQ/v-deo.html
Cool Strat
haha yeah kinda :)
Another great lesson, thank you! I'll be jumping over to Patreon soon for sure to get more of this great guidance. Wondering if you can share a link to the video of you performing (clip at the beginning of this lesson) - I'm sure I'm not the only one who would be happy to get more of your playing and also support whatever channel that might be on.
Thanks! Yeah there's not much online of me playing. For performing I've been working as a hired guitar for www.taylorraeofficial.com for about 5 years or so. There are clips here and there but I don't think she has much full-song live stuff online. The clips in my recent videos are just from a recent gig. I just set my camera on the floor in front of us to get some clips, but the audio is terrible because it was just the camera mic. It's hard to get good audio unless you are planning that all in advance. Normally we play at festivals so that's not really possible. I'll ask Taylor if we can do something like that this year.
Your lessons are the best definitely helped my guitar playing. Could you do one on chicken picking and breaking it down like you do with chords and scales
Good idea I'll have a think about how I can do that.
I don't know exactly what the secret ingredient is, but your lessons seem to go down very easy. I really enjoyed this lesson.
Thank you! 😃 Lots more coming and more on our Patreon
I was killing it (thinking…” I might be able to learn this!”) until 4:45 and it went from double stop 101 to PHD (ouch). I’ll definitely try and look at the website for the notes but for us older skill challenged folks it is quite startling to jump so largely
You can do it! Might not be as hard as it looks 😀
Hey, Blue. Any thoughts of doing a livestream, maybe once a week. Answering a few questions. I’d imagine you’re pretty busy but it would be way cool. Love your style.
I have thought about it. I need a bit more equipment and I'm not sure when would be a good time. But let me have a think more about it all. 🤔
@@GuitarLessonsVancouver Saturday morning would be ideal, but I’m sure you have a ton of commitments during the week. I seriously wish I lived in Vancouver. I’d be on your waiting list for personalized instruction. It must be something in the air because you & @thegoodguitarist (I think that’s his name) are both unbelievably good instructors. Both from Vancouver
The Brown Eye Girl Double Stops in 3rds aren't diatonic to the C major pentatonic scale because it has notes that aren't in the pentatonic scale?
Those double stops don't come from the pentatonic, they are made from the full 7 note major scale.
@@GuitarLessonsVancouver That confusing because I don't think hendrix used those Major scale double stops. If you make a lesson about how Clapton Cream era uses Dominant scale double stops
@@waynegram8907 The pentatonic double stops are Hendrix-like. The other ones not as much. The video intends to give you more options than just Hendrix style.
@@GuitarLessonsVancouver true, i meant to make a YT video lesson showing major scale double stops and minor scale double stops that are double stops that are notes that aren't in the pentatonic scale. Most people know minor pentatonic boxes but how to add in major scale double stops and minor scale double stops into the minor pentatonic boxes#1 thur box#5
Looks like you're playing cords in that lick. I that true?
Yeah, I see it. Not able to copy it yet, but trying.
Double stops is a funny music term for playing two notes at once.
I don't understand. When you hammer on 5 to 7, those 7s aren't in the c pentatonic, except on the g string. The others You'd have to hammer on to 8 to stay in pentatonic.
The double stops come from tge full C Major scale. Remember Pentatonic is a 5-note version of the full 7 note scale.
