I had a friend that worked for the WWE years and he always told me how amazed how often Meltzer would get stories correct because many of the stories were kept under wraps with the demands from Vince to not let the information leak and in a world of workers, it was always difficult to get the truth. OTOH, my friend told me that the Torch was largely way off in their reporting.
And that’s what I’ve seen from people in the business…they often get the Torch and WON mixed up with each other and claim that Dave said something so off the mark that in reality it was the Torch that reported it.
It also amazes me how many fans think he’s anti-WWE. WCW people used to always claim that he was anti-WCW and was always going to have a bias towards the WWE because he was paid by them for consulting work done in the early 90’s.
Meltzer was also taught about the business by Paul Boesch who was a fan of his and thought it was a good idea to have a serious journalist (Dave has a degree in journalism from San Jose State) and was backed by famous sports journalist, Frank DeFord. People pay for Dave’s reporting and perspective on wrestling. That’s all. If you don’t like how he’s influencing your thoughts on wrestling, then stop paying attention to him.
Dave Meltzer is Jim's greatest hypocrisy. He loathes those that expose the business yet constantly defends Meltzer, one of the preeminent forces for years at exposing the business.

He's worse. His influence has helped create and fuel the smart mark culture that dominates wrestling fandom today, both in and out of arenas.
you do not seem to understand what jim means when he says exposing the business. He does not mean sharing news or facts about it, he complains about people in the wrestling business making the business look stupid/fakey/moronic and someone. Like the two dicks who did the ass to ass spot. Dave writing about behind the scenes news in a newsletter is not like that at all.

That's my biggest criticism, too. Jim is being a major hypocrite about Meltzer exposing the business simply because they're friends.
How anyone with half a brain can listen to Bruce Prichard is beyond me. This is the guy who says the Red Rooster was a great gimmick, Dustys polka dots weren't a rib, and still defends the long debunked Wrestlemania III attendance myth. I guess Bruce thinks saying all this bullshit will put him back in Vince's good graces. He does do great impressions though so there's that.
+jwill5587 Yeah, Bruce Prichard always came off as a WWE corporate shill to me. Plus his show is on the Network now. So he won't criticize any decision the WWE makes, or if he does he'll use kid gloves while he does it.
It is hypocritical, but there's a huge difference between some of the top guys in the company breaking kayfabe in the spiritual home of the WWF to amuse themselves and Meltzer writing a behind the scenes newsletter.
I've heard people call Meltzer "revolutionary" etc for the way he covered the business , which is a crock of shit and a flawed premise because he wasn't the first by no means. But even if he had been, the only reason guys like Bill Apter didn't expose the business in their publications is because they knew it would be bad for everyone in the long term.
Dave Meltzer is the Roger Ebert of pro wrestling. You might not agree with all or even most of his opinions, but his knowledge of and passion for wrestling can't be denied.

Its easy to discredit Meltzer's detractors when you only mention Bischoff, Russo and Prichard. However, Jerry Lawler, Tony Schiavone, and JJ Dillon are also on record as not being fans of Meltzer. For some reason Jim didn't address those. :o
I don't agree with everything Dave Meltzer writes down, even some of his star ratings, but you cannot deny that he is an amazing historian of the industry and writes fantastic obituaries and historical features. I just read his feature story in the Observer on a feud between Frank Gotch and Georg Hackenschmidt in 1911 and I was so intrigued when reading it.

People can say what they want about Meltzer, but it's an objective fact that he's broken more legitimate stories than any other wrestling journalist. He may not get everything correct, but he's beaten virtually all of his peers.
I hated Dave on the Wrestling gold dvds. He barley looks at the camera and his smug voice annoys me. I cannot watch or listen to Dave. I have absolutely loved Dave back in the day when I read magazines regularly. Great behind a pen terrible behind the microphone

Have some of the rumours been bullshit? Sure. Has he gotten the info from someone on the inside feeding it to him? Definitely. He has reported what he has heard. Plans change and sometimes people make things up. But dave tends to give credit where it is due, and has his own valid opinion of wrestling.

I do not understand Jim's attraction to this goon. Meltzer has convinced an entire segment of wrestling fans that he knows stuff they don't and is a trustworthy source despite not being in the major booking meetings. He has never run his own shows, booked a territory, or laced up a pair of boots but SOMEHOW MAGICALLY knows more about wrestling than people that were there. Mable as a the third man for nWo. Pure trash. He doesn't retract he just says "plans change" when the reality is that what he printed was never a plan to begin with. SOMETIMES he edges around truth but MOST of his nuggets come from wrestlers themselves wanting to be noticed. However his "journalistic integrity" keeps him from revealing sources. I don't get it. I used to think he was smart then someone pointed all this out to me and now I just think he's idiot.
I'm indifferent towards meltzer. We have the same taste in wrestling and I don't have any problems with him. but I fell like a lot of fans take him too seriously. His fans treat his word as gospel "if meltzer gave it 5 stars it must be great " and the haters are even worse because they always try to find a way to bring him up in conversations and bash him for his opinions. At the end of the day he's just another wrestling fan look all of us sharing his opinion. Only diffrence is he has a larger platform than most to do so.
