that's because Arya's training was based on lies...what they told her the purpose of her training was, wasn't even the purpose of her training...it was a means through which they "tricked" her into progressing to the next step
Jaqens actions are very mysterious considering that if he wanted to impersonate Pate he could have easily just killed the kid and dispose of the body. Simple. But going through the process of tricking the boy into a transaction that kills him definitely hints at the idea of Jaqen being bound by magical laws of some kind. Whether he is truly bound by such things or if it's just his personal ethics and free will to operate as such is still debatable. But he definitely seems like a magical entity of some sort.
how would he know where the key is? That is just extra work to figure out, when he could just have pate do it, then take his identity.... He literally did the most efficient thing
I am re-reading ASOIAF, and I had LITERALLY just finished reading the chapter where Sam arrives in Oldtown, then I see that this vid has dropped. It's one of the best chapters in the whole series. You have Sam suddenly unloading his entire adventure on the cool, subtle Alleras; followed by the short, blunt Marwyn, with game changing information about glass candles, blowing the entire story wide open. And then, right there, right at the end: "I'm Pate... like the pig boy." Boom. The End. I wonder... is Jaqen/Pate in on the Marwyn plot? At the very least, do Marwyn and Alleras know that this boy is in fact an extremely, bizarrely talented "Faceless Man"... or do they literally just think he's just this lad, Pate? Man, I have been waiting all my life for more Old Town, come on George D:
I don't think he is literally a god but it's more likely that he was sent to recruit Arya for the Faceless Men and steal something from the Cidatel also for them as we all believe Faceless Men are the servants of the Children and the Great Other.
A curiosity - Sam in AFFC makes an interesting observation after spending time in Castle Black's library that the library has books that even the Citadel does not have. This is a huge nugget of information that I am not sure I have ever heard anyone comment on. Jaqen was originally headed to the Wall, & ends up at the Citadel. Did Lord Commander Mormont's death change his course? Was Jaqen headed to the Wall in part to obtain information from the library at Castle Black? In Winds, we need to watch for what kind of information Pate/Jaqen will try to get from Sam. Is it possible that Jaqen is at the Citadel - & was originally going to the Wall - to intercept Samwell Tarly? Chew on the one.
This totally reminds me of this quote from GRRM that you guys have brought up on a few other occasions. GRRM says "I don't think any gods are likely to be showing up in Westeros, any more than they already do. We're not going to have one appearing, deus ex machina, to affect the outcomes of things, no matter how hard anyone prays. Where the Old God's might be the Children of the Forest/Bloodraven and religions like the Undying with leaders like Pyat Pree; Jacqin H'ghar may absoltley be the godlike-leader of the Faceless Men. I do hope you guys make more of these videos like it in the future.
So glad to see you guys putting out new theory vids...Jaqen says that only the MFG decides who gets the gift But if you have the coin you too can have that power.. JH seems to be a next level FM, maybe he sees the same potential in Arya.
There's an in-universe herb that drives animals to fits of violent rage. There are illusion spells such as those used by fire mages for the face. I think the faces they wear are for the beginning stages and then eventually they can change their faces at will by controlling the muscles in their face. George only said we're not seeing God's presents in the story more than they already are, which hints at the idea that some characters may be gods in desguise
On the subject of whether there will be ‘gods’, George’s comment is a little vague: “I don't think any gods are likely to be showing up in Westeros, any more than they already do. We're not going to have one appearing, deus ex machina, to affect the outcomes of things, no matter how hard anyone prays. I was just about to make the same comment but did not have the exact quote down! I also think that it seems unlikely that a character would be revealed to be an actual, definitive, god. Nevertheless JH is clearly not a random Faceless Man so I wonder what else we will find out for him as groundbreaking (or even if he will be left a mystery...)
I don’t think (qualifier) any gods are likely (qualifier) to be showing up any more than they already do (so some already do??) “Relation between religion and various Magics” is also suspect Jaqen = who people worship as the Stranger fits into all these clues.

He said that they wouldn’t be appearing to affect outcomes. The entire premise of this video is that he appeared to affect an outcome. It’s possible he’s a prophet of the many faced god but two things can’t be true at once and even though this channel arrogantly argues that GRRM makes mistakes on his own work 😂 GRRM already gave us the answer. 10:30 Jaqen is not a skinchanger, he used a poison called "Basilisk blood", when used in meat it turns whoever ate it violent and mad with anger and wrath. He used this on Weese's dog which went mad and killed him. This is confirmed in Arya's faceless training, when she was being taught poisons and was told what "Basilisk blood" did. @@TheOrderoftheGreenhand Here's a excerpt from the chapter; "Weese was sprawled across the cobbles, his throat a red ruin, eyes gaping sightlessly up at a bank of grey cloud. His ugly spotted dog stood on his chest, lapping at the blood pulsing from his neck, and every so often ripping a mouthful of flesh out of the dead man's face. Finally someone brought a crossbow and shot the spotted dog dead while she was worrying at one of Weese's ears." Most likely Jaqen poisoned the meat Weese feeds his dog, then when Weese fed him he went mad attacking the closet thing to him (His owner). A similar way Arya in (ADWD) kills the 'Old man' by poisoning a gold coin, so when he bites it he dies. After the dog ripped out Weese's throat he still tearing chunks out of the dudes face, so I wouldn't say the dog was calm. I've heard that before too, but if that were the case, why didn't the dog kill anyone else? The dog killed exactly who Jaqen wanted it to kill, and that was it, which suggests some measure of control

Heyyy, there may be some evidence in Jaqen H'gar's name for him being either the many-faced god, or the name being that of a title bestowed on to the leader of the religion. Jaqen, by my estimation, is a bastardized version of the name Joaquin, which in various languages has forms very close to Jaqen (like 'Jochen' in German, 'Joaquin' in Spanish). H'gar, by my estimation is a bastardization of the name Hagar. These two names together tell a very interesting story. First of all, Hagar, meaning 'flight' in hebrew, was the slave woman forced to have the biblical Abraham's child, who then went on to birth Ishmael, first son of Abraham and traditionally considered to be the father of all Arabians. Secondly, Joaquin, meaning 'God Established', was in the bible a couple characters, A king of Judah imprisoned by Nebuchadnezzar, king of the Babylonians, and was also the father of the Virgin Mary. Contained in this name is a father and mother of two prophets encompassing a huge plurality of the world's religions in a single person, as well as, literally, 'God Established Flight', and we all know how important flight is symbolically in the ASOIAF books. www.behindthename.com/name/joachim www.behindthename.com/name/hagar en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hagar en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Joachim
Im gonna hafta relisten to this back to back with Preston's vid on the same topic. I think both of you are hitting on something big. His take that Jaquen's Westerosi target is Bloodraven fits nicely with him being the Many Faced God, or his avatar in the way Bloodraven reps for the Old Gods.
Insanely excited to see a new video ! You guys interested me enough in buying the whole series to read for myself. I'm so intrigued by how you've presented the world with his material. I can't wait to spot some of these things for myself 👀
You two are incredible! Thank you so much for making these videos. I love how you construct your arguments and especially how you always cite your evidence.
Hmmm could be like Full Metal Alchemist where Jaqen is trying to become or "swallow" God or what he believes to be God in an attempt to gain knowledge and power. So happy to see a new video! Also interesting that Jaqen's hair is a representation of ice and fire with the red and white.
He is at the very least a seer/prophet. Somewhere on the level of Bran and Melisandre. His actions and motives may not be obvious or make sense for onlookers because he is just following the falling dominoes of his visions. Making sure he ends up where he needs to be in a way that looks accidently.
the qoute from Syrio about seeing with your eyes is just GRRM telling us to look at what we read. Also the prologues always have layers of meaning to what is happening in them. So that "a stranger, no one. Truly." is a nice catch.
I always guessed he had his own goals in how not like a faceless man was told in story he is. My theory is he is looking for someone to kill that Even a faceless man can't find. Either way great video as always.
@@CZ-dg7te I just wonder what his Goal at the end is with forbidden books and how biter and roag also were scared of him so what could jaqens end goal be. My guess if Mary Ellen and dave are correct probably bloodraven who is trying to help Westeros in his own way
@@CZ-dg7te my guess is he will go north eventually but realized something more after seeing Arya's potential and went down another way. I doubt dragons are just the thing he is researching as people already know ways to kill dragons so he could have gone to dorne in general. The key and marwin will probably be the reason jaqen is doing what he is doing to take someone out when the opportunity presents itself. Best guess is lost books burned by the religious king who was a book burner so we could see those books reappear in story as many libraries burned down in both the north and south losing knowledge in the process.

My best guess is that jaquen is arya's three-eyed crow, like bloodraven is bran's. The purpose is to tempt arya with the power of the faceless men to make her a pawn of the three eyed raven/children?? but it doesn't seem like he's beholden to the fm's rules.
If I may ask (being somebody who still didn’t read the book), how do you know the face showed to Pate was the same jaquen had at harrenhal, since hits part of the book is not in the tv series? Is it described in the book? Very interesting video, I’m quite enjoying your analysis on the entire saga.
@@ComradeCommissarYuri what if taking Pate’s position at the Citadel is required for his mission? That’s not indiscriminate Killing if it’s required to replace Pate.
@@210SAi Then someone still has to have prayed for Pate's death, otherwise he wasn't Jaqen's to kill and he would just have to find another way into the position he had to get into.
we assume he's in Oldtown to acquire the "Death of Dragons" book, which is meant to be the only known complete copy in the world iirc. supposedly to stop anyone else from having the knowledge on how best to kill dragons, or perhaps to kill them (but i assume the FM may likely already have this info.), so less likely. but that he's hooked up with The Mage who knows wayyy too much, with access to glass-candles and so on, he may be there to find something else other than the book & the mass pertinent information Marwyn has access to. & he is likely to be moving on from the Citadel soon now that Marwyn has left Oldtown as of our last Sam chapter. So..will he be making his moves now that the potential magic user (Marwyn) is gone? assuming the 2 of them aren't directly aligned
Finally a NEW theory video! Sorry, if I've missed one; I check in on you ever now and again, but Live Chats are not my game and really are not your forte....You guys are the best you tubers out there (IMHO) when it comes to GOT theories. I was so sad when you abandoned that. But, this was a real Christmas treat when I had a minute to run across it! Hope you will continue doing! More of this would totally get a Patreon subscription out of This ONE. Also, love seeing that hand and the chime for Order of the Greenhand!
Always love your theory videos. So what I learned from todays video one or a mixture of several things could be happening. One Jaqen is really high up in the faceless men order and as such is mostly doing his own thing. The people in the order might even believe he is the many faced god. Though far more likely he is just a person that has maybe lived a very long time though use of magic might even be the first faceless man or something like that, then being the god of death himself. If only because I am fairly sure we are not going to get a real answer as to if gods are real in this story or not. Two The rules that the faceless men are telling Aria are just not true at all and Jaqen is acting as any faceless man would. Which seeing how Aria is not following any of the rules and they haven't killed her yet kind of makes sense. Three Jaqen is a high up person in the order who doesn't need to follow the rules and Aria by saying his name has unknowingly made herself an heir to him and so her not following the rules is ok in everyones eyes because she is Jaqen's heir. Four the rules are important and Jaqen is a rouge faceless man who the order is going to send someone to kill at some point because he is a rouge and dangerous. If that is the case Aria is likely in a lot of danger and the order is likely going to turn on her at some point for her rule breaking. If that is the case Aria might need to destroy the whole order before she leaves. She might need to do that anyway this order doesn't really seem like a good thing.
@@kpax2066 Thanks. I am a bit dyslexic and although I know both words and there definitions I also would not notice the difference between the two words without sentence context. I will try to remember for next time.
Jaqen being the many face god was one of my first thoughts after Arya makes it to house and black and white. Didn’t Martin say that no gods will appear in his books
Im forming a theory that follows with the way the "first law trilogy" went. GRRM is supposedly a big fan and friend of the author. Im thinking we are thinking there are a bunch of different factions but what if it's just 2? 2 people at the top battling for the world with all these pawns under them. You need an army, a bank, assassins, magic, dragons, food, fortifications... You farm that stuff out but they are all actually working toward your ends. The Iron bank, Faceless men, old gods and children of the forest are all on the same team. One of them may be the leader or one leader might control all of them. GRRM said we won't see gods but magical ancient beings that have been warring with each other for centuries upon centuries... Im not 100% on how it's gonna play out but im convinced the bank and faceless men are the same people just pretending to be separate.
Jaqen didn't skinchange into Weese's dog. He uses wolfsbane. When The Waif is teaching Arya about poison she explains how wolfbane works and Arya realises that's how Jaqen killed Weese.
Arya thinking it and it being true are different. If he used a potion to do it we find it miraculous that the dog attacked Weese and only Weese then calmly sat there licking his wounds
"Let's do this" oh how I have missed hearing those words! So glad to hear them once more. I hope we will get part 2 of Stannis soon.

I’ve missed these proper theory videos 💜 It’s been a rough time and I needed a lift. So glad I saw this!

I've missed your videos guys, I'm happy to see that you are able to record new ones. All the best!
Such an amazing video you guys! I've really missed your excellent theories and great textual evidence!!!
Very interesting theory. Good to see you guys back at these connections.
Let’s do this ! We love when you guys post videos, we missed that!
Thank you so much! ❤️
Insanely excited to see a new video ! You guys interested me enough in buying the whole series to read for myself. I'm so intrigued by how you've presented the world with his material. I can't wait to spot some of these things for myself 👀
A man has waited sooo long for a Green Hand's video! A man is pleased.
You two are incredible! Thank you so much for making these videos. I love how you construct your arguments and especially how you always cite your evidence.
Def prefer these type of videos over podcasts
The triumphant return! Great way to close out the year.
Hmmm could be like Full Metal Alchemist where Jaqen is trying to become or "swallow" God or what he believes to be God in an attempt to gain knowledge and power. So happy to see a new video!
Also interesting that Jaqen's hair is a representation of ice and fire with the red and white.
Ah what a nice surprise! Great video guys
It's like Greek Myths from POV of humans.
He is at the very least a seer/prophet. Somewhere on the level of Bran and Melisandre. His actions and motives may not be obvious or make sense for onlookers because he is just following the falling dominoes of his visions. Making sure he ends up where he needs to be in a way that looks accidently.
Been a long time since a OOTGH theory video dropped
I missed you guys so much! Gonna binge all your live streams too!
the qoute from Syrio about seeing with your eyes is just GRRM telling us to look at what we read. Also the prologues always have layers of meaning to what is happening in them. So that "a stranger, no one. Truly." is a nice catch.
Thank you for getting back to making great videos!
Watch out for stun lock 🔒
Let’s go a video, been loving the live streams too, can’t wait for the winds of winter vids
I cant believe I missed this video. Its been a long wait for a video, and you guys do such good job with them! thank you, both
Returning to theory videos !!!! Outstanding
Ahhhhh "Hello & welcone to the Wolfs Den" one of the few things that can make me FANGIRL OUT!!! ohhh but "So, Lets do this!" 🤔🤔I think i have a MAAAAAYJAH girlcrush on ME!!! 😍🥰🤣
Luv yall!!!
Guys we missed your. awe inspiring videos, so thanks for this amazing holiday treat. ❤️❤️❤️😍
I have been on a break from asoiaf lately , but a order of the greenhand video is a must watch.
Yes! Sheeeeit, it was about time for another video! I like it, thank you! We want more!
UN-say my name...
*You're goddamn right*
I see what you did there.
My best guess is that jaquen is arya's three-eyed crow, like bloodraven is bran's. The purpose is to tempt arya with the power of the faceless men to make her a pawn of the three eyed raven/children?? but it doesn't seem like he's beholden to the fm's rules.
Great to have a new video!
Yes! I've missed these types of videos! *happy dance*
Finally part 2 oh how I missed these videos I don’t mind your live-streams but these are so so much better
They've returned!!!
Your videos make my day! I missed them so much!
If I may ask (being somebody who still didn’t read the book), how do you know the face showed to Pate was the same jaquen had at harrenhal, since hits part of the book is not in the tv series? Is it described in the book? Very interesting video, I’m quite enjoying your analysis on the entire saga.
The video that was promised. Thank you both.
THEY'RE BACK! I'm already leaving a like and a comment but I have to watch this in a big TV.
Great video I've been waiting for this one, is he the original faceless men, the one who recruites new faceless men?
Yay! A Green Hand Regular Video at last!🌹
Yesss! So happy to see a theory video from you folks! Thanks!!!!!
Is he a former faceless man that’s gone rogue??
It’s not know if he’s gone rogue or on a mission
@@210SAi sounds like gone rogue to me especially with killing indiscriminately... unless Pate was on a hit list for some reason
Y’all never disappoint!
Missed u guys videos man.. Favorite ASOIAF channel
You mean Rogue. Rouge is like blush, you put it on your cheeks to make them pink. Rogue is someone going down their own path.
@@kpax2066 Thanks.
I am a bit dyslexic and although I know both words and there definitions I also would not notice the difference between the two words without sentence context. I will try to remember for next time.
Got my head spinning. Great video.!!
Nice touch about the nightingale
Great work as always ❤️
Jaqen being the many face god was one of my first thoughts after Arya makes it to house and black and white. Didn’t Martin say that no gods will appear in his books
Not quite. He said they wouldn’t anymore than they already were
Im forming a theory that follows with the way the "first law trilogy" went.
I definitely smell the fabulous feast you are cooking up here.....and I love it!
Me and a coworker were discussing this how he is most likely the many faced god
a new theory video - i feel like its my birthday!
Y'all done did it again! Sooo great!
@@TheOrderoftheGreenhand just going of George's subtle ways of showing his hand which seems more likely?
Wow love it 😍 good work order as always
👋
Will we see the second part of the Iron born origins?
Yes please I am dying for this series to be launched please TOOTGH!!!
Love to see green hand back in business 🙂🤯🔥❄️🔥❄️📓
great video as always :)
Been waiting for a long time for this when I hear that music I get hyped. Ps we all missed this
so great. makes sense like every other theory
